Studies of foodstuff self-sufficiency in the antebellum South have shown that during the middle third of the nineteenth century, as represented by the census years 1840, 1850 and 1860, certain regions of Louisiana suffered from meat production deficits. It has been assumed by most interested scholars that these deficits were overcome by importing pork and beef from the midwest or Upper South. Other possible sources of meat supplements that have not been generally considered are the wild game and fishery resources of the state. SYNOPSIS: Functional-anatomical work on complex structural systems is handicapped by several difficulties: (1) Lack of established guidelines on how to select the structures that are relevant for the intended study, (2) lack of methods to check the accuracy of the description of a system's morphology, and (3) the need to integrate a large mass of results obtained through a variety of approaches taken from different disciplines, such as anatomy, physiology, physics, biochemistry, ecology and evolutionary biology. Habitat change in coastal Louisiana from 1955/6 to 1978 was analyzed to determine the influence of geological and man-made changes on landscape patterns within 7.5 min quadrangle maps. Three quantitative analyses were used: principal components analysis, multiple regression analysis, and cluster analysis.

Regional differences in land loss rates reflect variations in geology and the deltaic growth/decay cycles, man-induced changes in hydrology (principally canal dredging and spoil banking), and land-use changes (principally urbanization and agricultural expansion). The coastal zone is not homogeneous with respect to these variables and the interaction between causal factors leading to wetland loss is therefore locally variable …

The systematic relationship between the Gulf saltmarsh snake, Nerodia fasciata clarkii. and the freshwater subspecies, N. f. confluens. N. f. fasciata, and N. f. pictiventris, is re—evaluated using morphological characters that reflect head shape. Changes in character-states are analyzed from areas of contact into the populations of the freshwater forms. Beyond the narrow zones where intermediates are found there is no morphological evidence suggesting genetic introgression of clarkii genes into the freshwater populations. Discriminant analysis of the head scale measurements also suggests the significant division of the saltmarsh and freshwater forms. Ecological analysis reveals that interbreeding between the forms is …

Louisiana's coastal wetlands represent about 41% of the nation's total and are extensively managed for fish, fur, and waterfowl. Marsh management plans (MMPs) are currently used to avoid potential user conflicts and are believed to be a best management practice for specific management goals. In this article, we define MMPs and examine their variety, history, impacts, and future.

A MMP is an organized written plan submitted to state and federal permitting agencies for approval and whose purpose is to regulate wetland habitat quantity and quality (control land loss and enhance productivity). MMPs are usually implemented by making structural modifications in …

The phytotoxicity of haloxyfop-methyl $\{$methyl 2- (4- ( (3-chloro-5-(trifluoromethyl)-2-pyridinyl) oxy) phenoxy) propanoate$\}$ is reduced when applied to grasses growing under moisture stress, but the reasons for this reduction are not known. Glasshouse studies were conducted to determine the effect of imposed moisture stress on the phytotoxicity of haloxyfop-methyl; the absorption, translocation, and metabolism of $\sp{14}$C-haloxyfop-methyl; and the partitioning of $\sp{14}$C-photoassimilates in johnsongrass (Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers.) and large crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop.). Foliar applications of haloxyfop-methyl at 30 and 25 g ai/ha to crabgrass and johnsongrass, respectively, resulted in 92% regrowth of moisture-stressed plants and less than 12% regrowth …

Monoclonal antibodies (McAbs) were prepared against Pasteurella haemolytica serotype 1 (Ph-1) capsular material to identify, quantitate and purify antigens. McAbs were selected by ELISA and characterized according to their isotype, cross-reactivity with P. haemolytica and P. multocida serotypes in ELISA, antigen formalin sensitivity and ability to cause bacterial agglutination. Four groups of McAbs were established each recognizing a different epitope. Various P. haemolytica and P. multocida serotypes were found to share several epitopes demonstrating their antigenic relatedness. A colorimetric assay, based on tetrazolium dye reduction by bovine neutrophils, was adapted for the measurement and characterization of Ph-1 cytotoxin activity. Using …

Platelet-Derived Growth Factor Mrna Detection In Human Atherosclerotic Plaques By In Situ Hybridization, J. N. Wilcox, K. M. Smith, L. T. Williams, S. M. Schwartz, D. Gordon

Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) mRNA, and mRNA for its receptor, have been localized to specific cell types within the human atherosclerotic plaque, using in situ hybridization. The predominant cell types found to express PDGF A and B chain mRNA are mesenchymal-appearing intimal cells and endothelial cells, respectively, with little or no expression detected in macrophages. The distribution of PDGF receptor mRNA containing cells was also examined and found to be localized predominantly in the plaque intima.

We have investigated the mechanisms whereby equimolar quantities of ribosomal proteins accumulate and assemble into ribosomes of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Extra copies of the cry1 or RPL16 genes encoding ribosomal proteins rp59 or L16 were introduced into yeast by transformation. Excess cry1 or RPL16 mRNA accumulated in polyribosomes in these cells and was translated at wild-type rates into rp59 or L16 proteins. These excess proteins were degraded until their levels reached those of other ribosomal proteins. Identical results were obtained when the transcription of RPL16A was rapidly induced using GAL1-RPL16A promoter fusions, including a construct in which the entire …

Halophenols such as 2,4-dibromophenol (DBP) occur naturally in some marine sediments, as a consequence of various animal and algal activities. In an earlier study, DBP was observed in the burrow microenvironment of the hemichordate Saccoglossus kowalewskii. At the concentrations found in the burrow lining, aerobic respiration appeared to be inhibited significantly relative to anaerobic catabolism. This effect, as well as factors contributing to the degradation of DBP, has been documented further here. Results from the addition of radiolabeled DBP to oxic and anoxic sediment slurries and growth experiments with aerobic and anaerobic enrichments suggested that aerobes did not significantly metabolize …

Rat skin heparin proteoglycans vary markedly in the proportions of their constituent polysaccharide chains that have high binding affinity for antithrombin. As the proportion of such chains in a proteoglycan rises, their degree of affinity for antithrombin also increases [Horner (1987) Biochem. J. 244, 693-698]. The antithrombin-binding-site densities of such chains have now been determined, by measuring heparin-induced enhancement of the intrinsic fluorescence of antithrombin and by chemical analysis for the disaccharide sequence glucuronosyl-N-sulphoglucosaminyl (3,6-di-O-sulphate), which is unique to this site in heparin [Lindahl, Bäckström, Thunberg & Leder (1980) Proc. Since 1976 there has been a leveling off or slowdown in the rate of decline in coronary heart disease (CHD) mortality. The age-adjusted absolute annual rate of decline in CHD mortality rates during 1968-75 (Δ rate/100,000 population/year) was virtually identical for White males (-7.54), Black males (-7.85), and Black females (-7.20), and somewhat lower for White females (-4.25). During 1976-85, however, the secular trends diverged considerably. Age-adjusted rates continued to decline at the same annual rate for White males, while the decline was approximately half as steep for the other three race-sex groups. Calonectria crotalariae enhanced root penetration of Lee 74 (susceptible) and Centennial (resistant) soybeans by juveniles of race 3 of Heterodera glycines. The presence of the fungus resulted in greater numbers of females and both soil and root cysts on Lee 74 during the first 30 days. Greater numbers of soil cysts were recovered from Lee 74 at 80 and 120 days and from Centennial at 120 days after inoculation with both pathogens. Root colonization by the fungus increased from 19% to 57% at 40 days on Lee 74 and from 58% to 86% on Centennial at 120 days in the …

The degree of environmental control exerted by female inmates was examined as a function of gender role identity. The sample was obtained at the Louisiana Correctional Institute for Women, the only female prison in the state. The prison environment was assumed to offer very few control options. The options studied were those under the direct authorization of the social services division of the prison, and from individuals external to the prison. It was assumed that the flexibility found in androgynous individuals would allow for a greater level of perceived control than with either the masculine or feminine gender role identity …

Species within the genus Vibrio can be identified serologically through detection of species specific H antigens expressed in the core protein of the polar flagella. Cholera vibrios also exhibit a specific cell wall polysaccharide antigen (A). Antibody reactive with these specific antigens can be employed for the rapid serological identification of Vibrio isolates. Species-specific anti-H sera were produced in rabbits immunized with flagellar core protein prepared from V. vulnificus. A coagglutination reagent was constructed by arming S. aureus Cowan I cells with the anti-V. vulnificus flagellar antibody. The reagent coagglutinated 99.3% of isolates identified bacteriologically as V. vulnificus and, other …

The pentatomid genus Thyanta Stal is one of several large genera in the nominate subfamily and tribe. Thyanta belongs among those genera of Pentatomini lacking a spine or tubercle at the base of the third (second visible) abdominal sternite. The genus is divided into two subgenera: Phacidium Breddin, containing a single species, T. aeruginosa Berg; and the nominate subgenus, containing 36 species and one subspecies. The subgenus Thyanta is further divided into four species groups based primarily on differences and similarities in male and female genitalia. Contaminant transport from riverine sediments was investigated via physical and mathematical models. Due to its remote nature, there exists a lack of understanding of transport mechanisms and rates at the sediment-water interface of rivers. This dissertation is focused on evaluation of potential abiotic transport processes which affect the movement of contaminants across this sediment-water interface. Only non-dispersive transport of passive contaminants was considered allowing the research to focus on the movement of the sediment pore water which carries the contaminants. Dogs were inoculated with Ehrlichia platys and either examined morphologically or infested with Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Acari: Ixodidae) ticks for studies of disease pathogenesis and vector transmission. Dogs inoculated with Ehrlichia platys were sequentially necropsied at 1 week intervals from 7 to 35 days post inoculation. Ehrlichia platys-infected dogs had generalized lymphadenomegaly and histopathologic evidence of lymphoid hyperplasia and proliferation of resident tissue macrophages in lymph nodes, liver, and spleen. Most dogs had mild hemorrhage or edema in multiple organs, including splenic intrafollicular hemorrhages in all dogs except one. Livers had hepatocellular vacuolation in addition to portal lymphangiectasia and Kupffer cell …

Effects of gamma-irradiation, variety and storage on physicochemical properties of brown rice from three Louisiana rice varieties: Mars, a medium grain variety, Lemont and Tebonnet, long grain varieties, were determined. Cooking time was significantly reduced in Mars and Lemont at doses of 200 and 300 Krads. Irradiation increased cooking rate, water uptake at 80$\sp\circ$C, water uptake ratios, total solids content in residual cooking liquid and starch damage from 100 to 300 Krad samples. Water uptake at 96$\sp\circ$C generally decreased with increasing dose levels. Evidence indicated alterations in the rice grain structure and composition. According to author and scholar Ralph Ellison, the writers of the early twentieth century (with the exception of Faulkner) adopted Mark Twain's stylistic innovations in pursuit of their personal myth instead of "recreating and extending the national myth" by continuing Twain's development of "the Negro as the symbol of man." To Ellison, these writers had capitulated to a strong current prevalent in American thought: American self-definition in racially exclusive terms. A study was conducted to determine the prevalence of Campylobacter jejuni in various avian species and humans. Cloacal swabs derived from birds submitted to the Louisiana Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory for necropsy examination during the period February 1987 through July 1988 were routinely cultured for C. jejuni using Butzler's selective medium. Campylobacter jejuni was isolated from 10.1% of the cases examined. The isolation rate was 25.2% in Galliformes, 12.9% in Anseriformes, 8.3% in Columbiformes, 7.7% in Falconiformes, and 0.6% in Psittaciformes. None of the other orders of birds examined yielded C. jejuni. Prevalence data demonstrated that Galliformes are important reservoirs …

Throughout history, people speculated that an association existed between nutrition and disease prevention. Recently, studies have examined the influence of single nutrients on immunological mechanisms, but with limited focus on marginal deficiencies. This project investigated the effects of severe, marginal, and adequate levels of dietary magnesium and copper on immune function. Three experiments were conducted, with 100 gm male rats consuming one treatment diet for three, four or eight weeks. Mineral levels used were: (1) magnesium--50 ug/gm, 160 ug/gm, 280 ug/gm, 400 ug/gm; (2) copper--0.5 ug/gm, 2.0 ug/gm, 3.5 ug/gm, 5.0 ug/gm; or (3) a combination of the severely deficient …

An analysis of the pulpwood procurement environment was made to describe and model forest land area, ownership patterns, timber production, forest inventory, and the transportation network of 13 parishes in the northwest region of Louisiana. Pulpwood delivered to a pulpmill accounts for approximately 50 percent of pulp production costs. The cost of delivered pulpwood is a function of the mode of transportation, distance from the mill, competition for stumpage, and quality of the transportation network. This dissertation, an historical overview of black American autobiography from Frederick Douglass to Malcolm X, examines a recurring pattern and two related themes in the genre. Ever since the escaped slave narratives established bondage, flight, and freedom as the three-part pattern of their organization, black autobiographers have employed these same elements to tell their life stories. The creation of the free "I" is the pervasive theme of black American autobiography, freedom being won and the autobiographical self established through a symbolic struggle against and victory over a powerful father figure. This figure may be the paternalistic white culture in which …
