The effects of in utero and neonatal exposure to maternal Brugia pahangi infections on the development of homologous infections, immune responses, and pathologic lesions was studied in age-matched progeny of infected and uninfected female jirds. High IgG antibody titers to B. pahangi antigens were present in the sera of progeny from infected mothers. These neonatal titers to homologous antigens were shown to be of maternal origin, and did not alter the cellular responses of uninfected progeny as measured by in vitro antigen-stimulated blastogenesis and in vivo pulmonary granulomatous inflammatory responses to antigen-coated beads. This study analyzes the symbiotic relationship between rhetoric and homiletics. The proposed interface between the two disciplines is metaphor. Contemporary research on metaphor in philosophy, rhetoric, sociology, and theology is employed to produce a rhetorical/metaphorical homiletics. A deconstruction of classical homiletics traces the basic preaching model to a Cartesian philosophical starting point. The nature of the Christian scriptures as metaphorical and of Christian liturgy as symbolic is alien to the rational, objective homiletics. An examination of Christian worship as a rhetorical event includes the elements of the theory of rhetoric developed by Michel Foucault: discursive practices, rules, roles, knowledge, and …

Binding and texture are important attributes of restructured meats which are dependent upon protein properties. Meat was pre-salted with 0, 2.25, 4.5, 6.75, or 9.0% sodium chloride (NaCl) and extracted with buffers (pH 6.0) containing 0, 0.6, 1.2, 1.8, or 2.4 M NaCl to determine total extractable protein (TEP). Increased NaCl level in extraction buffers increased TEP, but NaCl levels of 2.25 and 4.5% in meat interfered with release of solubilized proteins into extraction solutions. Restructured beef roasts of 0, 0.45 or 0.9% NaCl and 0, 0.225 or 0.45% sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) were manufactured with 10% mechanically separated beef (MSB), …

Eusociality has evolved in only two insect orders: the Isoptera and Hymenoptera. While hymenopteran genetics has been the subject of intensive study, genetic information on termites is conspicuously lacking. The purpose of this dissertation was to utilize starch gel electrophoresis in genetic studies of termites. Chapter I consists of electrophoretic methods and a study of genetic variability among four families of termites. Although some representative species/colonies demonstrated low levels of variation, the ranges of polymorphic loci and gene diversity were within levels generally observed for the class Insecta. As part of the investigation of the allelopathic interactions of members of the Florida scrub community, the chemical constituents of Solidago pauciflosculosa (Asteraceae) and Calamintha ashei (Lamiaceae) were studied. Aqueous and organic extracts of fresh leaves of S. pauciflosculosa provided large amounts of diterpene acids. The two major diterpenes isolated, 17-oxygrindelic acid and 17-oxogrindelic acid, showed significant inhibitory effects on germination and radicle growth of two Florida sandhill grasses, Schizachyrium scoparium and Leptochloa dubia. The organic extracts of S. pauciflosculosa were very rich in sesquiterpenes, the three major sesquiterpenes being (+)-epicurlone, (+)-episesquiphellandrene ($-$)-a-trans-bergamotene. This study was divided into: (1) a descriptive study of the farm resources, management practices, veterinary services utilization, and socio-psychological characteristics of Louisiana ranchers in relation to beef cattle performance, (b) a classification of the ranchers according to their utilization of veterinary services with the objective of identifying producer characteristics that are associated with frequent, moderate, and non-use of veterinary services, and (c) identification of factors associated with continuing or ending beef cattle production. Spectra in different regions of the electromagnetic spectrum were taken at different temperatures for benzaldehyde vapor. A review of the literature revealed that the existing data could not be interpreted by this model. Possible perturbations were reviewed. Potential models based on these perturbations were proposed. Calculations were carried out to test the interpretation. No disagreement between experimental and computational findings resulted. The models proposed contradicted no existing experimental determination of the ground state of vapor phase benzaldehyde. Laboratory, greenhouse, and field experiments were conducted on brackish marsh soil of Hackberry, Louisiana (LA). This study was aimed to obtain detailed information on some soil- and water-based management factors that were applicable to the revegetation and productivity improvement of the area. This area was inundated by brackish-saline water, and is now open water, almost totally void of vegetation. The deteriorating productivity and continuous loss of vegetation in the study area can be related to the seasonal and temporal biochemical transformations. Root growth and its effects on water uptake and plant water relations of seedlings during the initial weeks after transplanting were studied. One-year old bare-root shortleaf pine seedlings were put into six different root zone environments defined by the factorial arrangement of two temperatures and three levels of soil water potential. Needle water potential and stomatal conductance were measured 28 days after planting. The next day, root system absorptive capacity was evaluated by forcing water at a constant hydrostatic pressure through detopped seedlings. Palynological and carbon-13 analyses were studied to determine their practicality as tools for paleoecological reconstruction of marsh vegetation communities of the Mississippi delta plain. Both were calibrated on marsh surface sediment samples from four vegetation zones within Barataria Basin, Louisiana: fresh, intermediate, brackish and salt marsh. Samples were taken concurrent to vegetation sampling to allow comparison of sediment data to plant biomass and clip plot data from each of the four zones. The $\partial\sp{13}$C of sedimentary carbon reflects the proportion of C-3 and C-4 species at a site (which corresponds to a salinity gradient in the basin). The average from …

Circadian rhythms of hormone secretion and responsiveness to hormones were examined in the gulf killifish. The findings provide additional information to support the hypothesis that reproductive, metabolic and behavioral activities are regulated in part by a temporal interaction of circadian rhythms. These findings include: (1) Daily injections of drugs that influence serotonergic (5-hydroxytryptophan, 5-HTP) and dopaminergic (dihydroxyphenylalanine, DOPA) activities induce conditions appropriate to either summer or winter, and can determine the manner in which a fish reacts reproductively and metabolically to water temperature, the main environmental determinant. This study investigates an example of extreme foraging specialization by tropical birds, namely foraging for arthropods in suspended aerial leaf-litter in lowland tropical rainforest. Up to 16 species at two southwestern Amazonian sites constitute a guild of specialized dead-leaf foragers that make up roughly 11% of the region's insectivorous bird species. Most dead-leaf specialists are ovenbirds (Furnariidae) or antbirds (Formicariidae) that are characteristic members of mixed-species foraging flocks. Individual dead leaves represent an abundant, seasonally stable resource that supports higher prey densities (number per leaf) and a greater proportion of preferred prey than adjacent live foliage. In a laboratory experiment with five genotypes of soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merrill, developmental time and fecundity of Tetranychus urticae Koch was measured. Developmental time for virgin females on leaf disks was shortest on Plant Introduction (PI) 227687, 'DSR 352,' and 'Williams.' There were no differences in development time for male mites due to genotype. Females laid more eggs per day on PI 227687 and more total eggs on PI 227687 and 'DSR 352' than on 'Williams,' 'Clark,' and 'Davis.' A novel embryo culture system has been developed using 96-hour chick embryos. One to four mammalian embryos can be injected into the chick embryo amnion (CEA) and allowed to develop for 72 to 96 hours. Pronuclear-stage mouse embryos from two different strains were cultured in the CEA or in Whitten's medium. There were more expanded blastocysts from one strain of embryos when cultured in the CEA. More hatched blastocysts resulted from embryos of both strains when cultured in the CEA. Carbonic anhydrase (CA) catalyzes the reversible hydration of CO$\sb2$. Plant carbonic anhydrases are structurally distinct from those found in animals. In C$\sb3$ plants, the enzyme is located in chloroplasts. To date, little structural information on the enzyme from plants has been available. In this study the full-length cDNA for the spinach chloroplast CA was sequenced. The cDNA contained 1,156 base pairs. The open reading frame encoded a protein of 34,569 daltons. Comparison of the N-terminal sequence of this protein with that of other chloroplast precursors indicated that CA is synthesized as a precursor. The transit peptide likely contains about 60 …

A 38 amino acid long peptide, Shiva-1, was designed and chemically synthesized in our laboratory. Shiva-1 has only 46% amino acid homology with the naturally occurring lytic peptide from Hyalophora cecropia, known as Cecropin B. However, hydrophobic properties and charge density of the natural molecule were conserved at 100% in the synthetic peptide. This novel peptide was shown to be capable of killing a number of different species of plant pathogenic bacteria at nanomolar concentrations. Comparative studies show that Shiva-1 is more effective in this bacteriolytic activity than Cecropin B. The gene for Shiva-1 was chemically synthesized and cloned into …

Although suspension is the dominant mode of material transport in rivers world-wide, concepts of suspended sediment transport have come mostly from studies of small rivers. This study describes relationships between discharge and suspended sediment in a large river system, the Mississippi-Atchafalaya in south Louisiana. Changes in species composition and abundance, habitat use patterns and foraging behavior of 19 bird species in a bottomland hardwood forest in Louisiana were studied during the 1984-1989 breeding seasons. Species that used only one macrohabitat included the Yellow-throated Warbler along oxbow lake margins and the American Redstart, Swainson's Warbler, and Hooded Warbler in non-flooded oak-gum-elm forest. The Northern Parula and Kentucky Warbler used 2 macrohabitats--non-flooded forest and oxbow lake margins. Thirteen species used 3 macrohabitats (non-flooded forest, seasonally flooded forest, and oxbow lake margins). Nitrogen Dioxide is a toxic air pollutant that exists at less than 0.5 ppm in the atmosphere. This toxic compound is known to initiate autoxidation of unsaturated fatty acids both in vivo and in vitro. When autoxidation occurs in vivo, membrane damage that can lead to cell death can occur. Low concentrations of nitrogen dioxide were shown to react with the polyunsaturated fatty acid esters, methyl linoleate and methyl linolenate, by a H-abstraction mechanism. This dissertation addresses a fundamental problem in computational AI--developing a class of massively parallel, neural algorithms for learning robustly, and in real-time, complex nonlinear transformations from representative exemplars. Provision of such a capability is at the core of many real-life problems in robotics, signal processing and control. Gulf killifish, Fundulus grandis, spawned daily in aquaria exposed to 12-hr daylengths and 21 to 28$\sp\circ$C temperatures. The number of eggs spawned varied daily producing a peak about every 13.7 days. Ovarian studies indicate that increased maturation of peripheral germinal-vesicle oocytes in preparation for spawning begins five days before the semilunar spawning peak. There is an increase in numbers of hydrated oocytes and ovulated eggs reaching a maximum on or a day before peak spawning. A novel protein (HEAAE II, High Essential Amino Acid Encoding Protein), rich in essential amino acids (75% of total), was designed and constructed in our laboratory. The monomeric form of the protein consists of 20 amino acid residues with four additional amino acids comprising a potential $\beta$-turn. Circular dichroism and size exclusion analysis demonstrated, that the monomer exists in a stable $\alpha$-helical conformation that self-aggregates in aqueous solution to form higher ordered multimeric structures, which are very reminiscent of natural plant storage proteins. Usage-dependent phenomenon has been commonly observed in computer information systems (CIS). Since the performance of CIS greatly depends on the phenomenon, how to model it is an important CIS design issue. A usage process model (the Simon-Yule model) for modeling the usage--dependent phenomenon is proposed. The model is modified and successfully applied to the performance evaluation of self-organizing linear search heuristics. The present investigation involved utilization of the chitin-carotenoid complex and the whole meal derived from crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) composite byproduct, in controlled broiler diets to determine the biological value of these substrates as potential sources of growth promoters, red intensifying agents, and protein supplements. Included are basic studies of the unique characteristics of the chitin-protein and chitin-carotenoid complexes. The crawfish chitin-carotenoid substrate did not exhibit any deleterious effects on broiler growth performance in terms of animal weight gain and feed efficiency at levels up to 5% of the total diet. To facilitate a better understanding of how varietal resistance and predation affect area-wide sugarcane borer populations, several studies were undertaken before the development of a simulation model. The first study was a 3-year investigation into the compatibility and contributions of varietal resistance, arthropod predation and insecticide toward sugarcane borer control. Insecticides were shown to be the predominant management factor preventing plant injury, but varietal resistance appeared nearly as important in terms of sugarcane borer population regulation in sugarcane. Aeromonas hydrophila and A. sobria have been identified as major causes of mortalities among commercially raised channel catfish and are the cause of septicemic diseases in a wide variety of other animals. At present, antibiotic therapy is the only prescribed treatment for Motile Aeromonad Septicemia (HAS) in channel catfish. Antibiotic treatment, however, is expensive and often not effective due to the development of resistance in the bacterial strains. Development of immunoprophylatic methods for the prevention of HAS would be of value and use to the commercial catfish industry. The spread of itchgrass (Rottboellia cochinchinensis (Lour.) Clayton) throughout the sugarcane (Saccharum interspecific hybrids) area is of growing concern to producers in Louisiana. At Maringouin and Thilbodaux, LA, season-long itchgrass interference reduced sugarcane stalk populations, cane yields, and sugar yields 34, 42, and 43%, respectively, compared to no itchgrass interference. Stalk populations and cane and sugar yields were comparable for early-season (from spring until layby on June 12) and season-long itchgrass interference with late-season (from layby on June 12 until harvest) being similar to no itchgrass interference.
