A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Scientific-Romantic Synthesis In The Popular Scientific Writings Of Lewis Thomas., Donald Paul Lee
A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Scientific-Romantic Synthesis In The Popular Scientific Writings Of Lewis Thomas., Donald Paul Lee
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
As physician, educator, former medical administrator, and member of the National Academy of Sciences, Lewis Thomas has been one of the most eloquent spokespersons for the scientific community. This dissertation analyzes twenty-four of Thomas' popular scientific essays. These essays reveal a union of traditional scientific values and popular romantic themes, what is called here a rhetorical synthesis. The term synthesis is understood as the putting of two or more things together to form a whole, particularly suggesting a reconciliation of two philosophically opposing forces. Thomas' essays reflect a synthesis insofar as they merge what have traditionally been thought to be …
Determination Of Allelochemicals In The Environment Surrounding Ceratiola Ericoides., Elizabeth Douglas Jordan
Determination Of Allelochemicals In The Environment Surrounding Ceratiola Ericoides., Elizabeth Douglas Jordan
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
As part of an investigation into the allelopathic interactions of members of the Florida scrub community of plants, the release of allelochemicals by the Florida wild rosemary, Ceratiola ericoides (Empetraceae) was monitored. Aqueous extracts of whole leaves, water-rinses of leaves, aqueous litter extracts, and aqueous soil extracts were monitored monthly, or twice monthly in the summer months, for the dihydrochalcone ceratiolin, its decomposition product hydrocinnamic acid, the microbial degradation product of hydrocinnamic acid, acetophenone, and trans-cinnamic acid. High performance liquid chromatography was used to quantify the four compounds. The amounts of ceratiolin, hydrocinnamic acid, acetophenone, and trans-cinnamic acid in the …

Management Of Tobacco Budworm, Heliothis Virescens (F.) And Bollworm, Helicoverpa Zea (Boddie) In Cotton: Host Plant Resistance And Ovicidal Approaches., Billy Rogers Leonard
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Growth, development and survival of pyrethroid-resistant (PY-R) and -susceptible (PY-S and FIELD-88) tobacco budworm, Heliothis virescens (F.), and bollworm (CORN-BW), Helicoverpa zea (Boddie), were compared on four cotton lines ('Deltapine 41', La. HG-660, La. HG-063 and PD-0804) and artificial diet. The FIELD-88 and CORN-BW strains had significantly higher 5 and 9 day larval weights compared to the PY-R and PY-S laboratory strains. Larvae fed squares of La. HG-660 and La. HG-063 had significantly lower larval and pupal weights, required significantly more days to pupate and had higher cumulative mortality compared to those reared on squares of a commercial cultivar, Deltapine …
Environmental And Economic Influences On The Oyster Fishery Of Lower Barataria Bay, Louisiana., Earl Joseph Melancon Jr
Environmental And Economic Influences On The Oyster Fishery Of Lower Barataria Bay, Louisiana., Earl Joseph Melancon Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A three year study, 1982-85, of eight oystermen bedding on 19 leases in lower Barataria Bay was designed to determine lease production, fuel, labor and energy inputs and the expenses to operate. The data was then incorporated into a bioeconomic model of the lower Bay. Commercial yield ratios (sacks harvested:sacks bedded) per lease ranged from 0.03$-$1.68:1. The two lowest lease yields were the result of vandalism and poaching, respectively. A multiple linear equation developed from the data predicts that as salinity and water temperature increase, lease yields decrease. Utilization of the Bay's bedding leases are dependent on seed obtained from …

Accretion And Canal Impacts In A Rapidly Subsiding Wetland Ii. Feldspar Marker Horizon Technique, Donald R. Cahoon, R. Eugene Turner
Faculty Publications
Recent (6–12 month) marsh sediment accretion and accumulation rates were measured with feldspar marker horizons in the vicinity of natural waterways and man-made canals with spoil banks in the rapidly subsiding environment of coastal Louisiana. Annual accretion rates in aSpartina alterniflora salt marsh in the Mississippi deltaic plain averaged 6 mm in marsh adjacent to canals compared to 10 mm in marsh adjacent to natural waterways. The rates, however, were not statistically significantly different. The average rate of sediment accretion in the same salt marsh region for a transect perpendicular to a canal (13 mm yr−1) was significantly greater …
Investigation Of Flow Patterns In Various Wastewater Treatment Facilities, Thomas Joseph Martin Jr
Investigation Of Flow Patterns In Various Wastewater Treatment Facilities, Thomas Joseph Martin Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The theoretical hydraulic retention time of wastewater treatment plants is often used to predict the efficiency of treatment and to calculate operational parameters. However, these values are related to the actual hydraulic retention time. When there is a large discrepancy between the actual and predicted values, the actual hydraulic retention time can be determined by marking a parcel of wastewater and recording its passage through the system. This investigation utilized rhodamine WT, a fluorescent dye, to track the movement of wastewater through a stabilization lagoon and a rock-reed filter. The loss of rhodamine WT to sorption, biodegradation and photodegradation was …

Nitrogen Fixation In Beggiatoa, Vitreoscilla, And Thiothrix., James Kevin Polman
Nitrogen Fixation In Beggiatoa, Vitreoscilla, And Thiothrix., James Kevin Polman
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Many strains of Beggiatoa, Vitreoscilla, and Thiothrix were found to be capable of nitrogen fixation and to harbor plasmid DNA of various sizes, including large plasmids, and several plasmids in the 12 to 15 Mdal size range. Nitrogenase induction and activity in Beggiatoa alba were studied with respect to the effects of oxygen, pH, temperature, and nitrogenous compounds. Induction required microaerobic conditions. Nitrate and nitrite repressed induction, but glutamine did not. A pH optimum of 6.5 to 8.0 and a temperature optimum of 29$\sp\circ$C were observed. Nitrogenase activity was immediately and incompletely inhibited by ammonium, but was not inhibited by …
Adolescent Alcohol Expectancies And Alcohol Use As Functions Of Familial Factors., Andrew Ward Millar
Adolescent Alcohol Expectancies And Alcohol Use As Functions Of Familial Factors., Andrew Ward Millar
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In an extension of Brown, Creamer and Stetson (1987), this study investigated the relationships between components of family life, adolescent drinking and alcohol expectancies. Alcohol expectancies are defined as the learned associations between alcohol consumption and the results of drinking. Out of 73 adolescent (12- to 18-year old) subjects screened, 55 met criteria and participated in two comparisons with multiple dependent variables. In the first of these, 15 subjects who were exposed to alcoholics for at least 75% of their lives were found to have stronger expectations that alcohol would provide cognitive and motor enhancement than did 15 matched subjects …
Mechanism Of Toxicity Of 2-Thiotriazone (Ttz) In Rats., Twintillia Murphy Tate
Mechanism Of Toxicity Of 2-Thiotriazone (Ttz) In Rats., Twintillia Murphy Tate
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The mechanism of action of 2-thiotriazone (TTZ) was evaluated in adult and immature rats of both sexes. TTZ produced marked pulmonary toxicity in rats that was both age and sex-dependent. It was highly toxic in male rats (oral LD50 of 4.6 mg/kg and ip LD50 of 1.4 mg/kg). Female rats were more resistant than males and immature rats (30-40 days of age) were totally resistant to TTZ toxicity. Gross and histological examination of lung tissue from rats exposed to TTZ showed severe pulmonary edema, effusion and mottling of the lungs. Significant increases in lung weights were also observed. Diethylmaleate (DEM) …
Ecology And Epidemiology Of Rhizoctonia Foliar Blights Of Soybean., Xiao Bing Yang
Ecology And Epidemiology Of Rhizoctonia Foliar Blights Of Soybean., Xiao Bing Yang
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Soybean (Glycine max) seedling natural infection caused by Rhizoctonia solani Kuhn, anastomosis group 1, intraspecific groups IA and IB (AG1-IA and AG1-IB), causal agents of Rhizoctonia foliar blights of soybeans, is first reported. Infections were predicted by experimental inoculum levels with r$\sp2$ = 0.77-0.87 (P $<$ 0.001). Twenty locations surveyed in 2 years in south Louisiana showed that web blight was the major disease type. Culture characteristics indicated that associated isolates were R. solani Kuhn, AG1-IB. Morphogenisis of microsclerotia from web blight isolates showed a lateral growth type different from the traditionally described loose growth type observed for sasakii-type sclerotia, indicating a genetic difference between AG1-IB and AG1-IA in R. solani. Components of Rhizoctonia aerial blight were quantified from 1986 to 1988. Primary infections were high early in the season and significantly correlated with average amount of daily rainfall. The establishment of disease foci was mainly determined by the rainfall events prior to canopy closure. Significant expansion of disease foci occurred only after canopy closure. Development of aerial blight is divided into two phases related to canopy closure. The first consists of primary infection and has a soilborne nature. Variance-to-mean ratios indicated that early infection was aggregated, and different cluster sizes were determined by paired-quadrat variance. The second phase has a leafborne nature and results in disease focus expansion. Factorial experiments under controlled conditions showed a strong influence of free moisture and plant growth stage on disease focus expansion. Disease focus radius was a linear function of accumulated free moisture hours. Diseased plants/focus and disease incidence were best fitted with circle equations. Slopes of equations were proportional to plant growth stage. Under field conditions, disease focus expansion was explained well using accumulated rain days and soybean growth stages at inoculation as predictors. Natural disease incidence late in the season was determined by distribution pattern and amount of early infection. Incorporation of an aggregation factor into a logistic disease model improved prediction.

Sources Of Inoculum, Factors Affecting Spatio-Temporal Spread, And Yield Loss Caused By Puccinia Recondita F. Sp. Tritici On Wheat., Krishnamurthy Venkata Subbarao
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Kramer-Collins 7-day spore samplers were operated continuously at two locations, Baton Rouge and Bossier City, during 1986 and 1987, and daily urediniospore counts were taken. Number and viability of spores trapped was maximum during the active epidemic period and viability was significantly inversely correlated with ambient maximum temperature. Leaf rust appeared in numerous microplots of McNair 1003 during summer. Rusts from Hordeum pusillum Nutt. and Lolium multiflorum Lam. failed to infect wheat. Surveys during mid-December in Baton Rouge and Alexandria, showed uniform leaf rust distribution over a large area and the possibility of a major exodemic source of leaf rust …

This experiment was designed to evaluate the ability of three different somatic cell cultures to promote development of early cleavage stage pig embryos. A total of 245 2-cell, 4-cell, 8-cell, and 16-cell pig embryos were cocultured for 5 days with porcine oviductal epithelial cells (POEC), porcine fetal fibroblast monolayer (PEF), a combined POEC and PEF coculture system (PEF-POEC), or Dulbecco's Modified Eagle Medium alone (DMEM). Embryos were collected at slaughter from the reproductive tracts of superovulated prepubertal gilts. Embryos were recovered, evaluated, and randomly placed in one of the four treatment groups. POEC were recovered from oviductal flushes, washed, and …
Hypertension As A Cause Of Lower Than Expected Death Rates From Coronary Artery Disease Among Blacks., R. Cooper, B. E. Simmons
Hypertension As A Cause Of Lower Than Expected Death Rates From Coronary Artery Disease Among Blacks., R. Cooper, B. E. Simmons
Faculty Publications
Coronary risk factors are more prevalent among blacks than whites in the United States. It is therefore paradoxical that age-adjusted death rates for coronary artery disease (CAD) are similar in the two racial groups. The major risk factor for CAD that is more common among blacks than whites is hypertension, which increases the risk of CAD by two- to fourfold, depending on the presence of smoking, hypercholesterolemia, or other factors. Two general hypotheses have been advanced to explain the lower than expected CAD rates among blacks: (1) the presence of some protective factors, such as increased levels of high density …

Comparison Of Clinical Isolates Of Klebsiella Pneumoniae To Klebsiella Sp. Isolated From Summer Harvested Eastern Oysters, Crassostrea Virginica (Gmelin)., Thomas Elbert Graham
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Suspected environmental fecal coliform positive Klebsiella sp. oyster isolates were analyzed and compared to human clinical isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae. Oyster isolates were urease negative (at 24 hours) and were identified as K. pneumoniae using API 20E biochemical test strips. The ability to produce fecal coliform reactions was lost by 65% of the oyster isolates after undergoing several passages on brain-heart-infusion agar at 20$\sp\circ$ to 25$\sp\circ$C. Tests with 4-methylumbelliferyl-B-d-glucuronide (MUG) found both oyster and clinical isolates to be MUG negative. Moles % guanine plus cytosine (mol% G + C) information indicated that oyster isolates had mol% G + C values …

Nuclear DNA mass in cells from a reference species can be used to obtain high‐resolution estimates of DNA mass from a target species. In our study of DNA mass in cells from 45 selected species, representing each of the major vertebrate classes, we have obtained values of from 1.5 to 110.0 pg of DNA. Because values in or near this range would be expected in the study of nuclear DNA mass in vertebrates and other organisms, the species in this report can provide a useful catalogue of references for comparative studies of DNA. Reality And Knowledge In Voegelin's Political Philosophy. (Volumes I & Ii)., Seung-Hyun Baek
Reality And Knowledge In Voegelin's Political Philosophy. (Volumes I & Ii)., Seung-Hyun Baek
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
It is the primary aim of this dissertation to draw attention to Voegelin's political philosophy and to place it at the center of the conduct of political inquiry, by criticizing positivistic political epistemology. Though scientism had become a dominant commitment, it does not provide an appropriate approach to political knowledge. Making reality dependent on methodology, it neglects important political existence, and fails to ask deeper questions about the truth-content political reality. However, there is an extra-spatio-temporal reality, that we can know, albeit imperfectly, and not discovered by the modern scientific methods. By means of the restoration and "retheoretization" of the …
Vegetative Compatibility Groups Of Fusarium Oxysporum F. Sp. Lycopersici And Nonpathogenic Strains Of F. Oxysporum And An Isozyme Analysis Of Pathogenic Populations., Karol Sue Elias
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A worldwide collection of 112 isolates of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici (FOL) from tomato was examined for pathogenicity, colony morphology, vegetative compatibility, and isozyme polymorphism. There were no correlations among colony morphology with age of culture, race, vegetative compatibility group (VCG), or geographic origin. Vegetative compatibility group 0030 contained all three races of FOL from throughout the world and all colony morphology types. Vegetative compatibility groups 0031 and 0032 contained races 1 and 2, but their geographic ranges were somewhat more limited. In addition, 50 isolates of FOL were the sole members of their own VCGs. Thus, there was …

The Etiology And Control Of Pepper Anthracnose., James Forbes Hadden
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, C. capsici, C. acutatum, and C. coccodes incite pepper anthracnose. Species were differentiated based on their conidial and colony morphology as well as colony growth rates. In a survey of southern Louisiana pepper fields in September, 1987, anthracnose incidence ranged from 5 to 75 percent. Colletotrichum capsici, C. gloeosporioides, and C. acutatum were the incitants of anthracnose in the fields surveyed. Reactions of bell pepper and tomato fruit to isolates of C. gloeosporioides, C. capsici, C. acutatum, and C. coccodes from pepper and tomato were determined by injecting mature fruit with conidial suspensions. All isolates caused characteristic anthracnose …
Lipopolysaccharide Serotyping Of Vibrio Vulnificus., Stephen Jeffrey Martin
Lipopolysaccharide Serotyping Of Vibrio Vulnificus., Stephen Jeffrey Martin
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Current schemes used to serotype Vibrio vulnificus are based on direct bacterial agglutination using polyclonal rabbit antisera. During the course of serotyping Louisiana V. vulnificus isolates we failed to observe a reproducible agglutination profile for these isolates. The major obstacle in producing serovar specific sera has been the failure to produce high titered anti-LPS sera in rabbits. Anti-LPS serum from rabbits immunized with formalin-killed, heat-killed, or acetone dried whole cell vaccines and LPS-carrier conjugates uniformly produced titers $\leq 320$. Separation of anti-LPS activity from whole sera by affinity chromatography also yielded low titered antisera. A typing system predicated on the …

The Pattern And Process Of Land Loss In Coastal Louisiana: A Landscape Ecological Analysis., Scott G. Leibowitz
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The goals of this research were: to develop a methodology for the study of landscape process and pattern; to determine the spatial pattern of land loss in coastal Louisiana and relate it to causal processes; and to assess the relative importance of natural versus human-induced processes in causing land loss. Land loss was analyzed for a 22 year period at three sites, using a Geographic Information System composed of digital habitat maps. The most significant finding of this research was that land loss is not a simple, spatially homogeneous phenomenon, that occurs uniformly. Instead, large clumps of high loss, or …

Carbonaceous Cherts Of The Swaziland Supergroup, Barberton Mountain Land, Southern Africa., Maud Maureen Walsh
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The well-preserved carbonaceous cherts of the early Archean (3,200 to 3,500 Ma) Swaziland Supergroup of the Barberton Greenstone Belt, South Africa contain fossils that are among the Earth's oldest. Fossils are rare in the carbonaceous cherts, however. Petrographic and geochemical analyses of the carbonaceous cherts yield information useful to the study of early life and to the general question of the nature of silicification of early Archean rocks. The filamentous microfossils whose morphologies, as well as the texture of the encompassing laminations, suggest an affinity to modern microbial mat-dwelling cyanobacteria or bacteria, are the most probable biological structures identified during …
