The analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects of the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) ketoprofen (2.2 and 3.63 mg/kg) and phenylbutazone (4.4 mg/kg) were compared in equine models of acute synovitis and chronic hoof pain. The eicosanoids, prostaglandin E$\sb2$ (PGE$\sb2$) and leukotriene B$\sb4$ (LTB$\sb4$), increased dramatically in synovial fluid after carrageenan-induced synovitis of the intercarpal joint. PGE$\sb2$ concentrations in untreated horses peaked at 9 hours while LTB$\sb4$ concentrations peaked in all horses at 3 hours. Synovial fluid concentrations of both eicosanoids returned to near baseline by 48 hours. Lameness, joint temperature, and synovial fluid volume, protein and nucleated cells increased at 3 to …

Hydrophobic chemicals have accumulated in sediments for most of the last century as the result of industrial and municipal discharges as well as urban and agricultural runoff to surface waters. Beginning with the Clean Water Act, these pollutant sources have been significantly reduced resulting in the sediments becoming a source of pollutants to the overlying water ecosystem. It is therefore important to determine the rate at which the contaminants associated with the sediment are released to the water. It was demonstrated, using a homologous transgenic rice system, $5\sp\prime$ distal and proximal cis-acting transcriptional regulatory elements were required for developmental control of a rice seed storage protein glutelin (Gt1) gene. The functional importance of proximal elements in the context of the 1.8 kb promoter was demonstrated by single substitution mutations in the TATA box ($-$28/$-$23), AACA motif ($-$73/$-$61), and protein-binding Boxes I ($-$103/$-$86), II ($-$124/$-$110), III ($-$175/$-$158), and IV ($-$200/$-$217). A simultaneous mutation of five protein-binding sites ($-$410/$-$86) essentially eliminated the activity of the 1.8 kb promoter. One hundred thirty-three low socioeconomic status adult subjects from Earl K. Long Medical Center were interviewed using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R - Nonpatient Edition. Subjects also completed the Schedule of Recent Experiences, Interpersonal Support Evaluation List, and Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R Personality Disorders Questionnaire. This study attempted to predict medical utilization over the past year. The sleep of high anxiety/worry and low anxiety/worry subjects was studied by means of nocturnal polysomnography. Fifteen high anxiety adult subjects were chosen to represent an analog Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) population, and were selected from among individuals scoring within the upper 20th percentile on the trait portion of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and the Penn State Worry Questionnaire (PSWQ). Fifteen low anxiety subjects were selected from among individuals scoring within the lower 50th percentile on those measures, and were matched with high anxiety subjects for age, sex, race, and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) scores. Employing attachment theory of contemporary psychology, I explore nurturing in the novels of Fanny Burney, Ann Radcliffe, and Ellen Price Wood. The heroines' need for nurturing manifests itself in diverse aspects of the genre. In the mother's absence, various attachment figures, such as guardians, surrogate mothers, sister/friend relationships serve as nurturer. In Fanny Burney's novels, Evelina, Cecilia, and The Wanderer, fortune and a family name become important societal goals. In this dissertation I attempt to construct a framework for an alternate theory of instruction, starting from the position that education has no theory of learning; instead, what passes for theories of learning are actually descriptions of the conditions under which knowledge is acquired. Descriptive theorizing does not serve education well because it is not likely, being a description of what is known told in terms of assumed categories, to be generative or adaptive. Bombesin is a tetradecapeptide first isolated from frog skin. This peptide has potent effects on core body temperature of rats when administered centrally. Bombesin-induced hypothermia at normal ambient temperatures appears to be dependent upon some pre-existent condition which may be related to nutritional status. Four experiments were conducted to examine if the pre-existing condition for bombesin-induced hypothermia at normal ambient temperatures is primarily related to modulation of sympathetic nervous system activation. Behavior problems of 44 children with Down Syndrome between the ages of 6 and 15 and 44 controls without mental retardation matched for age, sex and socioeconomic status were compared by means of mother and teacher ratings. Ratings from both sources indicated that children with Down Syndrome had more behavior problems, in particular attention deficit, noncompliance, thought disorder and social withdrawal. Thirty one percent of these children were identified by mothers as having a significant behavior problem compared with 58% of those rated by teachers. Recently, attention has been given to the cognitive processing of aversive emotional, or threat-related, information. Although investigations have often focused on anxiety disordered individuals, it is suggested that examination of "normal" individuals with varying levels of anxiety will increase the understanding of the cognitive processing of aversive emotional, or threat-related, information. It has been hypothesized that high anxious individuals exhibit an attentional bias toward threat-related emotional information. The response of low anxious individuals to threat-related information is unclear. Some evidence suggests that non-anxiety disordered individuals employ a mechanism that inhibits or interferes with the processing of threat-related, emotional information. The …

This study compared the relaxation responses of neurologically impaired rehabilitation patients during verbal and nonverbal relaxation induction protocols. Seventy inpatients undergoing rehabilitation served as voluntary participants: (a) 20 patients with right-hemisphere brain dysfunction, (b) 20 patients with left-hemisphere dysfunction, and (c) a contrast group of 30 non-neurologically impaired orthopedic/medical patients. In the first phase of the study, all subjects underwent an evaluation that involved completion of screening instruments, self-report measures, and a brief neuropsychological test battery. All of the abstracts were published in industry journals and conference papers during 1990 and 1991. The features identified in the abstracts are compared to the suggestions for structure and style found in fifteen textbooks frequently used in university technical writing courses. In many dicotyledons, the nutrient reserves are stored in the cotyledons. Phaseolin, 7S globulin, is the major seed protein from common bean Phaseolus vulgaris. In vitro transcription assays and gene transfer studies indicate that phaseolin gene expression is regulated primarily at the transcriptional level. In this dissertation, I studied cis- and trans-acting factors that may play a role in the transcriptional regulation of the $\beta$-phaseolin gene. Gel mobility shift and exonuclease III protection assays identified four distinct DNA binding proteins, CAN, AG-1, CA-1, and TATA-box binding protein. This study was conducted to: (1) determine the effects of stocking density and dietary protein:energy ratio on survival, growth, feed consumption, feed conversion, lipo-somatic index, dress-out percentage, and productive protein value of common snapping turtles; and (2) determine the fatty acid composition of muscle, liver, and fat bodies of wild common snapping turtles and common snapping turtles fed a diet of known fatty acid composition. Coding reliability and validity were assessed through a pilot study after which the actual coding was carried out. A census of 32 funded and a simple random sample of 54 unfunded proposals were used for this study. Among adolescents, escalating rates of completed and attempted suicide are reported worldwide (Maris, 1985). In the literature, a variety of risk factors have been associated with suicidality in adolescence. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between cognitive distortions, impulsivity, and stressful life events in suicidal adolescents. A total of 118 adolescents between the ages of 12 and 18 years participated in this investigation. Both electro-olfactogram and integrated multiunit receptor responses of populations of olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) clearly showed that responses to complex mixtures were predictable. Results demonstrated that receptor sites for basic and acidic amino acids, respectively, are independent from those for neutral amino acids and multiple receptor site types with highly overlapping specificities exist for amino acids within each group. Results also confirmed that one mechanism for synergism is the simultaneous activation of relatively independent receptor sites by the components in a mixture, and there was no evidence of mixture suppression. In most of the United States, overwintering redclaw crayfish (Cherax quadricarinatus) is necessary because they cannot withstand winter temperatures. Consequently, hatcheries are required to produce juveniles for pond stocking. The objectives of this study were: (1) identify biological factors affecting production of juvenile redclaw, (2) determine production capabilities of a redclaw crayfish hatchery, and (3) determine the economic potential of redclaw hatcheries. Experiments were designed to assess fecundity and factors influencing spawning such as stocking density, male/female weight, diet, mortality, and cannibalism. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between emotion and blood pressure levels and variability for 80 Caucasian subjects between the ages of 30 and 65 matched on gender. The subjects were divided into four groups: normotensives, untreated borderline essential hypertensives, treated mild essential hypertensives, and Type II diabetic hypertensives. Subjects completed five psychological measures: the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI); State-Trait Anxiety Inventory-trait anxiety (STAI-Tanx); State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory-trait anger (STAXI-Tang); the ratio of anger-in to anger-out (STAXI-IO); and the Autonomic Nervous System Response Inventory (ANSRI). This investigation studied the presence of an explicit memory bias for emotional body related stimuli in patients diagnosed with an eating disorder. Explicit memory refers to the recall of stimuli previously presented. Explicit memory tasks are thought to reflect cognitive elaboration mechanisms. Research on depressed patients has found a bias for recalling negatively valenced information and/or a bias against recalling positively valenced information. The effect of caffeine ingestion upon endurance performance while walking at 45% VO$\sb{2\rm max}$ in a warm environment (27$\sp\circ$C, 48% rh) was examined. Eight moderately trained subjects (aged 21-25 years) walked on a treadmill on 4 separate occasions until exhaustion under 4 different treatment regimens. Two of the treatments consisted of caffeine-containing beverages, while the other 2 included non-caffeine-containing beverages. One hour prior to the start of exercise, the subjects consumed a GatorPro drink with either 5 mg/kg of caffeine, if caffeine was the randomized drink, or placebo (flour). Neuropsychological research examining hemispheric function has recently revealed important, and previously unrecognized, perceptual-motor processing advantages in the left and right hemispheres of the brain. This research has also highlighted verbal-motor disruption problems in the performance of motor skills that may be predictable given an understanding of hemispheric specialization and function. Applied research examining methodology to optimize brain functioning in the learning of motor skills has ignored this neuropsychological research. Several human and animal studies of chromium (Cr) supplementation in the form of Cr picolinate (CrPic) have reported increases in lean body mass, often with concurrent body fat decreases. This 12-week study examined the effects of six dietary levels of CrPic (0, 75, 150, 300, 600, 1500 ppb Cr) upon the growth and body composition of the rat. The goal of this work was to develop molecular markers for use in a backcross breeding program to speed the introgression of genes influencing rapid early height growth (EHG) from slash pine (Pinus elliottii Engelm. var. elliottii) into longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.). The efficacy of molecular markers for genetic mapping in the Pinaceae was determined in segregating haploid and diploid populations. Initial screening for genetic polymorphisms was conducted using the random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) technique. Physiological parameters were measured under natural light conditions and needle orientation from towers and walkways erected in the crowns of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) trees. Photosynthetic light response curves, chlorophyll content, nutrient content and specific leaf area were determined for current-year foliage on detached branches. Two silvicultural treatments were randomly assigned to the twelve plots in the fall of 1988. Plots were thinned to a density of 731 trees per hectare or left unthinned, at a density of 2990 trees per hectare. Bacterial leaf streak or black chaff caused by Xanthomonas campestris pv. translucens (Xct) can cause yield loss in wheat, especially in warm, high rainfall environments. Bactericidal chemicals have not been effective in controlling the disease, however, host resistance to leaf streak may be an effective control measure. Studies were conducted in the field and greenhouse to determine the relationship between the black chaff and leaf streak symptoms caused by Xct, to quantify yield loss, to calculate the heritability of leaf streak reaction and to evaluate germplasm for resistance to leaf streak. Two researcher-produced, standard-length videos on photosynthesis (and accompanying ancillary materials) were developed with the input of educators and content experts. The control treatment video script contained the standard number of prototypical examples and graphics based high school textbooks. The experimental treatment video script was based on the theory of conceptual change. Two student focus groups met daily for one week and reviewed portions of the original experimental treatment script for clarity, brevity, and choice and placement of examples and nonexamples. The generation time of L. monocytogenes was calculated to be 72.2, 28.5, 17.01, and 6.9 h on crawfish tail meat held at 0, 4, 6, and 12$\sp\circ$C, respectively. Potassium sorbate (PS) (0.3%) spray treatments on crawfish held at 4$\sp\circ$C, extended the lag phase of the bacterium. However, once exponential growth began, a generation time not significantly different (P $>$ 0.05) than that of untreated crawfish was observed. Samples sprayed with 0.3% citric acid (CA) and held at 4$\sp\circ$C supported growth of the bacterium equally well as that of untreated samples.
