The microdissection of the integument and subcutaneous structures of the head, neck, and thorax of the Domestic Turkey, Meleagris gallopavo, revealed a complex system with several distinct layers of connective tissue, smooth and striated musculature, and fat bodies (corpora adiposa). These layers show structural variations across the body surface, and the patterns of variation of the different layers correlate with one another. The smooth apterial muscles and the striated subcutaneous muscles complement each other in moving certain feather tracts. Fat tissue is deposited in the dermis as dermal fat, in the Fascia superficialis, and in distinct fat bodies associated with …

Automated analyzers have revolutionized diagnostic hematology in mammalian species. These commercial instruments utilize flow cytometric technology to enumerate blood cell concentrations. Because of the nuclei present in most non-mammalian erythrocytes and thrombocytes, these instruments are unable to calculate leukocyte counts in birds, amphibians, reptiles, and fish. These investigations sought to determine if three commonly used methodologies in flow cytometry could sufficiently differentiate avian erythrocytes, leukocytes, and thrombocytes, and ultimately form a basis for performing total leukocyte counts. The standard diagnostic system in the United States, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual III-Revised, has recently been revised (i.e., DSM-IV) to include recent research and clinical advances that have enabled further specification of the existing diagnostic criteria. One set of diagnostic criteria that is representative of this increased specification are the criteria for the eating disorders. The expansion of these criteria in the recent publication of DSM-IV creates a need for the development of a structured interview that would enable differential diagnosis among these diagnostic categories. Beginning with a definition of "race" as a system of discourse about human difference sustained by its symbolic articulations, I approach "race" as analogous to the social disciplines that Foucault describes as constructing the modern subject. Bringing together certain speculations of Lacan, Fanon, and Morrison, I suggest that this racial discipline facilitates a racial "mirror stage" through which "blackness" and "whiteness" are projected as distinct and unified conceptions of identity. My readings of representative texts examine how such racial identity patterns are both seductive as resolutions of self-discord and destructive in tension with the multiple, interpersonal, and historical determinations of …

Previous studies of gender in Byron's Don Juan, such as those by Susan Wolfson and Louis Crompton, have concentrated primarily on identifying gender ambivalence and attributing that ambivalence to factors outside the text, such as Byron's ambivalence toward his personal homoeroticism as well as to the social attitudes of Regency England toward questions of gender ambiguity. In this dissertation, I propose to turn the critical gaze back to the text in order to go beyond identifying gender ambivalence to track how that ambivalence works within Don Juan. The effects of extrusion temperature and post extrusion holding time, microwave heating, and gamma irradiation on antioxidants and lipid composition in rice bran were studied. Post extrusion holding time had no apparent effect on rice bran stability. Increased holding times reduced (p $<$ 0.05) total vitamin E. Oryzanol concentration was lower (p $<$ 0.05) only with 6 min holding time. Inactivation of lipolytic enzymes was obtained by extrusion temperatures of 120, 130, and 140$\sp\circ$C. Increased extrusion temperatures reduced the retention of vitamin E and oryzanol during storage. An extrusion temperature of 110$\sp\circ$C provided the highest retention of vitamin E and oryzanol during storage although FFA level was higher (p $<$ 0.05) than that of the other extrusion temperatures from 105 to 375 days. There were no significant (p $>$ 0.05) decreases in individual vitamin E vitamers until 4 min microwave heating. After 8 min heating, individual E vitamers decreased significantly (p $$ 0.05) in FFA level by 24 weeks of storage with microwave heating for 12 min. Microwave heating for 4, 8, and 12 min did not provided adequate inactivation of lipolytic enzymes. Total vitamin …

Homelessness occurs with uncommon regularity in the works of American naturalists, and in each case, the result of a character's homelessness results in a crisis of social identity and self definition. This pattern recurs in the works of the canonically identified naturalists, such as Stephen Crane, Frank Norris, and Theodore Dreiser, as well as other writers who have only been tangentially associated with naturalism--Edith Wharton and Paul Laurence Dunbar, for example. Tobacco etch virus (TEV) causes an important viral disease of pepper (Capsicum spp.) in the Western Hemisphere. In this study, 36 isolates of TEV from the United States, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, and South America were mechanically inoculated in the greenhouse to selected pepper lines reported to have resistance to one or more TEV isolates. Goals of the research were to evaluate reactions of the resistant pepper lines to the TEV isolates, and to determine if the TEV isolates could be grouped into pathotypes based on their reactions in pepper lines chosen as differentials during the course of the …

Six dimensions of psychological well-being were used to predict effective coping across three context domains. Participants rated themselves on dimensions of psychological well-being and the coping behaviors used for problems they reported in a health, financial, and isolation or loss of relationship context. For each participant, a close friend or family member also rated them along the same six dimensions to provide an alternate measure of well-being. The criteria for effective coping was based on the use of emotion-focused coping in situations perceived as uncontrollable and problem-focused coping in situations perceived as controllable. This study examined exercise as a moderator of the stress-illness relation by exploring leisure physical activity and aerobic fitness as "buffers" of the effects stress has on physical and psychological symptoms in a sample of 135 college students. Specifically, the goal was to provide information regarding the mechanisms by which exercise exhibits its "buffering effects" against minor stress. It was questioned as to whether both increased aerobic fitness associated with exercise and actual participation in the activity itself were necessary for the apparent buffering effects exercise has on stress or is one factor more important than the other. South American austral migrants are bird species that breed in temperate South America in the southern summer and migrate north, towards or into northern South America, for the southern winter. Austral migration is similar to other avian migration systems in many ways, but its uniquely South American locale is reflected geographically by the relatively short-distance migrations of most austral migrants, and taxonomically by the numerical dominance of the suboscine family Tyrannidae (the tyrant-flycatchers), of which more than 70 species migrate. The ability of uterine isolates of Streptococcus zooepidemicus to resist phagocytosis was explored by the organism's ability to grow in equine fresh blood. Although isolates grew in fresh blood of many horses, any given isolate was killed by blood of certain horses. Killing required leukocytes, heat labile and heat stable components of plasma and appeared to follow phagocytosis of the organism by neutrophils. This led to the working hypothesis that killing was mediated by phagocytosis requiring complement and isolate-specific antibody to variable surface antigens. Most of the children in this study had sufficient language skills to communicate successfully with their teachers even though they held inappropriate concepts of photosynthesis. This study examined the use of drawing tasks to assess children's ideas related to photosynthesis in an elementary-grade classroom. The performance of combinations of the Norpac$\sp\circler$ tube RBC with a bead filter (System I), a tube settler (System II), and a sand filter (System III) in pilot scale recirculating systems stocked with tilapia were evaluated and compared. Good fit empirical equations were obtained relating TAN and NO$\sp2$-N (both exponential), and DO (linear) with daily amount of feed. Likewise, linear equations relating bead filter or sand filter pressure with feed, and flow with pressure were obtained. Systems I and II maintained favorable water quality up to the maximum feed load studied of 3 kg/day. System III effectively handled only 1.2 …

Responses of cultured mouse fibroblasts, human erythrocytes, bovine erythrocytes, and liposomes with different phosphatidylcholine (PC) and sphingomyelin (SPM) ratios to both natural and synthetic lytic peptides were characterized. Peptide-induced morphological alterations of the plasma membrane of cells were examined by various light microscopic techniques and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The ability of natural and synthetic peptides to kill cells and cause increased permeability of liposomes was evaluated using Trypan Blue (TB) dye exclusion assay and fluorescent dye leakage assay, respectively. The significance of nitrogen transformations in mangrove sediments to the exchange of nitrogen in mangrove forests and influence on aquatic primary productivity was studied between 1990-1992 in Terminos Lagoon, Mexico. Fluxes of dissolved inorganic and organic nitrogen, particulate nitrogen (PN), and total suspended sediments (TSS) were measured in a fringe mangrove forest using the flume technique. There was a net import of NH$\sb{4}\sp{+}$ and NO$\sb{2}\sp{-}$ + NO$\sb{3}\sp{-}$ from the creek and basin forest, while particulate (PN) and dissolved organic nitrogen were exported to the creek and basin forest. A femtosecond time-resolved Raman spectrometer is developed to study the ultrafast dynamics of hemoprotein. The laser system consists of a dye laser synchronously pumped by the SHG of compressed ML Nd:YAG laser pulse, and a Ti:sapphire regenerative amplifier using chirped-pulse-amplification technique. The laser system provides 350 fs pulses output with 0.4 mJ/pulse energy at the repetition rate of 1 kHz. The tunability covers the whole Ti:sapphire lasing range with the use of different laser dye. Red drum juveniles of mean initial weight 9.23 $\pm$ 0.27 g were kept in indoor aquaria. The water was maintained at a salinity of 12 $\pm$ 0.5 ppt. The fish were fed six isonitrogenous (38% crude protein) and isocaloric (1.36 $\times$ 10$\sp4$ kJ/kg), purified diets differing in lipid content, for nine weeks, to investigate the effects of selected dietary essential fatty acids (EFA) on growth performance and tissue fatty acid composition. The synthesis and characterization of chitin analogs based on water soluble amino cellulose derivatives are described. This family of derivatives exhibits properties suitable for applications as biodegradable carriers for pharmacons and agricultural chemicals, and production of high molecular weight polymeric quaternary salts. The chemical and physical properties of the group of amino cellulose derivatives prepared from the amidation of methyl carboxymethyl cellulose or the aminolysis of cyanoethylated cellulose with different diamines are analyzed. By spot-mapping territories of lowland forest birds in southeastern Peru, 19 "bamboo specialists" were documented to be restricted to thickets of bamboo (Guadua weberbaueri). Six specialists are restricted to thickets throughout their entire geographic range (obligate bamboo users); seven specialists may use other habitats sparingly away from southeastern Peru (near-obligate bamboo users); the remaining six species are frequent users of habitats lacking bamboo in area besides southeastern Peru (facultative bamboo users). Circadian variations of $\sp{14}$C-glycine incorporation into protein and the responsiveness of muscle tissue to growth hormone, prolactin and insulin-like growth factor-I were examined in gulf killifish, Fundulus grandis. Incorporation of label during a 5 h period following $\sp{14}$C-glycine injection was tested at different times of day (LD 12:12). Incorporation varied during the day in all the tissues examined (scale, muscle, liver and intestine). The times of peak incorporations differed among the tissues. Scales showed peak incorporation during the dark hours. Peak incorporation by muscle occurred at the onset of light. These patterns were similar in male and female fish. The …

In Chapter I of this dissertation, we present a pedagogical introduction to the basic concepts of stochastic theory and review the progress made as well as the outstanding unsolved problems in the field. For the rest of this dissertation, we use a generalized quantum Langevin equation (GLE) approach to investigate various properties of quantum dissipative systems. In Chapter II, calculations for the displacement and random force correlation functions for Brownian motion are generalized to the case of an arbitrary heat bath for a damped harmonic quantum oscillator. A phytochemical study of regional members of five genera of the family Asteraceae was performed in search of bioactive natural products. The aerial parts of Garberia heterophylla, an endemic of the Florida central ridge scrub, were investigated and afforded the known guaianolide-type sesquiterpene lactone eupahakonesin, 2,6-dimethoxybenzoquinone, epifriedelinol and the novel diterpene, garberic acid. Aerial parts of Polymnia uvedalia provided three kaurane-type diterpenes, ($-$) kaur-16-en-19-oic acid, 3$\beta$-angeloyloxy-kaur-16-enic acid, 18-angeloyloxy-kaur-16-enic acid and two melampolides, enhydrin and 2$\sp\prime$, 3$\sp\prime$-dehydromelnerin A. The molecular structure of enhydrin was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Arbitrarily-primed PCR-based assays established the presence of sweetpotato intra-clonal genetic variability. These DNA polymorphism assays provided benchmark information regarding cultivar genetic uniformity in sweetpotato foundation seed programs. Arbitrarily-primed markers were also used to compare the genetic uniformity among sweetpotato clones derived conventionally, i.e., through adventitious sprouts, and nodally-based propagation systems. Initially, 38 primers generated 110 scorable DNA fragments using two virus-indexed plants from each clone source. Twenty-one bands (18.6%) were scored as putative polymorphic markers based on the presence or absence of amplified products. The pyruvate formate-lyase enzyme (Pfl), a key enzyme in alcoholic fermentation, catalyzes the anaerobic conversion of pyruvate into acetyl-CoA and formate in prokaryotes. The pyruvate formate-lyase gene (pfl) of the facultative anaerobe Aeromonas hydrophila was cloned and sequenced. Subsequently, the Pfl was characterized based on the deduced amino acid sequence and evaluated in vivo following insertion mutagenesis. Finally, the pathogenesis of a defined mutant was compared to wild type A. hydrophila in channel catfish. When Q-Sepharose was used in the purification of the V-nitrogenase proteins from Azotobacter vinelandii, an increase in resolution was observed which resulted in a separation of the nitrogenase component 1 protein (Av1$\sp\prime$) into two forms, labeled Av1$\sp\prime\sb{\rm A}$ and Av1$\sp\prime\sb{\rm B}.$ Even though both forms possessed the same enzymatic behavior, Av1$\sp\prime\sb{\rm A}$ exhibited a lower specific activity and migrated during gel filtration with an apparent lower molecular weight than Av1$\sp\prime\sb{\rm B}.$ Furthermore, SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis showed different relative compositions of the two major subunits of both forms with Av1$\sp\prime\sb{\rm A}$ possessing a trimer $(\alpha\beta\sb2)$ pattern compared to the tetramer $(\alpha\sb\beta\sb2)$ …
