Partisan Representational Form And Partisan Bias In United States State Lower-House Legislative Elections: A District-Level Approach., Kenneth Alan Wink
Partisan Representational Form And Partisan Bias In United States State Lower-House Legislative Elections: A District-Level Approach., Kenneth Alan Wink
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
I explore the relationship between partisan votes and partisan seat allocation in U.S. state lower-house elections. Specifically, I measure the representational form (the rate of partisan seat changes given particular partisan vote changes) and partisan bias (asymmetry in the seats-votes relationship) of 441 lower-house state legislative elections in 46 states from 1968 to 1987. I then test a number of hypotheses that have been advanced to explain variation in representational form and partisan bias. Values for representational form and partisan bias are generated by creating simulations from actual election results. I simulate seat gains made by Republicans given one percent …
A Comparison Of The Physiological Responses Of Brain-Damaged Alcoholics, Nonbrain-Damaged Alcoholics, And Social Drinkers To The Smell Of Alcohol., Fredric D. Klug
A Comparison Of The Physiological Responses Of Brain-Damaged Alcoholics, Nonbrain-Damaged Alcoholics, And Social Drinkers To The Smell Of Alcohol., Fredric D. Klug
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study reviews the relapse prevention and neuropsychological literature relevant to alcoholism. The argument was made that impaired neuropsychological functioning may be an important determinant of relapse. Specifically, neuropsychological impairment was expected to affect the manner in which individuals respond to conditioned alcohol cues so as to increase their attention to the cues and increase their desire to drink, a process which might adversely affect recovery. In order to study the impact of conditioned alcohol cues, subjective, objective, and psychophysiological responses of brain-damaged alcoholics, nonbrain-damaged alcoholics, and nonbrain-damaged social drinkers were compared on their responses to alcohol and to water. …
Improving Long-Term Adherence To Fluid Restrictions In Hemodialysis Patients., Kevin Dale Everett
Improving Long-Term Adherence To Fluid Restrictions In Hemodialysis Patients., Kevin Dale Everett
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The goals of this project were to investigate factors that predicted nonadherence to fluid restrictions for patients on hemodialysis, and to evaluate a relatively long-term behavioral intervention to improve adherence to recommended fluid requirements. One hundred forty-one subjects were recruited from outpatient dialysis clinics in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. In the prediction study, several medical and demographic variables as well as psychological variables of health locus of control, depressed mood, and social support were placed into a regression equation to determine the variance of fluid noncompliance predicted. It was found that variables of being male, educated, younger, and having an external …
Further Psychometric Properties Of The Mother's Activity Checklist., Linda Merideth Little
Further Psychometric Properties Of The Mother's Activity Checklist., Linda Merideth Little
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The present study attempted to extend the results obtained by Kelley and Carper (1988) regarding the psychometric properties of the Mother's Activity Checklist utilizing a larger, more heterogeneous sample of mothers. The MAC is a 100-item checklist of pleasant and unpleasant setting events which mothers frequently experience. A revised version of the MAC consisting of 45 items was developed utilizing factor analysis procedures. The revised version consists of four factors: Pleasant Events, Unpleasant Events, Aversive Child Behavior, and Aversive Marital Events. Utilizing a sample of eight hundred and thirty-three mothers with children between the ages of 2 and 12, both …
The Use Of Goal Setting And Contingency Contracting For Improving Children's Homework Performance., Deborah Lynn Miller
The Use Of Goal Setting And Contingency Contracting For Improving Children's Homework Performance., Deborah Lynn Miller
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Research suggests that homework has favorable effects on learning and student achievement. However, research directed at improving homework completion and accuracy has been limited in scope. The present study examined the effects of goal setting and contingency contracting on children's homework performance. Subjects were four parent-child dyads in which the child exhibited clinically significant homework problems. Dependent variables of primary interest included direct observation of children's on-task behavior, work accuracy, and Homework Problem Checklist scores (Anesko, Schoiock, Ramirez, & Levine, 1987). Using a combination of multiple baseline and withdrawal (ABAB) designs, goal setting and contingency contracting produced significant improvements in …
Predicting Success Of Minority Nursing Students On The "New" Nclex-Rn., Janet Simmons Rami
Predicting Success Of Minority Nursing Students On The "New" Nclex-Rn., Janet Simmons Rami
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to identify academic variables that could be used to forecast success for minority, baccalaureate (BSN) students enrolled in higher education in the south. A second purpose was to develop a methodological framework for predicting success on the post-1988 versions of the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN), that enhanced external validity, and generalizability. The best predictors of success for minority BSN nursing students were the Mosby assesstest, school comprehensive exit exams, GPA microbiology, the college cumulative GPA, nursing course cumulative GPA, and ACT composite. The sample included 216 Black graduates of three …
Perceptual Evaluation Of Infant Articulatory Transitions., Nancye Chaney Roussel
Perceptual Evaluation Of Infant Articulatory Transitions., Nancye Chaney Roussel
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The transition portion of the speech signal has been identified as critical to the perception of both consonants and vowels. Furui (1986) demonstrated that for adult Japanese speakers a 10 ms segment of the transition centered on the area of maximum spectral movement contained the most critical information for joint consonant and vowel perception. The distribution of phonemic cues contained within consonant-vowel (CV) non-reduplicated (NRB) syllables of infants ages 6 months to 15 months was compared to the distribution observed in adult productions to examine the extent of coproductive overlap of infant consonant and vowel gestures. Truncated versions of infant …
The Role Of Orbitofrontal And Temporal Lobe Cortices In Olfactory Memory Function., Robert Mansfield Savage
The Role Of Orbitofrontal And Temporal Lobe Cortices In Olfactory Memory Function., Robert Mansfield Savage
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Temporal lobe cortex was found to be essential to the initial processing of odor information within the cortex. This brain area can recognize previously smelled odors independent of damaged orbitofrontal cortex. In contrast, orbitofrontal cortex was found to be essential to identifying odors and attaching a verbal or nonverbal label to odor stimuli. These findings were observed in three brain-damaged groups, those with left hemisphere stroke (CVA), right hemisphere CVA, and traumatic brain injury (TBI). The differential pattern of performance observed for CVA and TBI subjects on odor identification and odor recognition tasks suggests that temporal lobe and orbitofrontal olfactory …
Predicting Kindergarten Success: Use Of The Lens Model Methodology To Determine Factors Which Predict Success In The Kindergarten Classroom., Karen Lynne Serrett
Predicting Kindergarten Success: Use Of The Lens Model Methodology To Determine Factors Which Predict Success In The Kindergarten Classroom., Karen Lynne Serrett
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Recent developments, including and especially the passage of legislation such as P.L. 99-457, have led to a call for more sophisticated technology to accurately assess at-risk preschool children. In addition, there is an urgent need for well trained professionals to perform these assignments. The purpose of the present study was to utilize the Lens Model methodology to examine variables professionals believe are important predictors of successful kindergarten functioning. In addition, the study also explored which variables would actually predict successful kindergarten functioning. Four major findings emerged from the study. First, results indicated that, for the professionals, Social Skills and Cognitive …
The Effect Of Instructional Videos And Simulation-Gaming Activities In The Environmental Science Curriculum On Knowledge And Attitudes., Lyle Mark Soniat
The Effect Of Instructional Videos And Simulation-Gaming Activities In The Environmental Science Curriculum On Knowledge And Attitudes., Lyle Mark Soniat
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
As a result of science reform efforts in the United States numerous shortcomings of the predominant curricula have been identified. The following study evaluates a modular, environmental science curriculum entitled Wild Louisiana, which attempts to address these shortcomings. Wild Louisiana is Science-Technology-Society (STS) oriented and infuses regionally based instructional videos and simulation-gaming activities into the secondary science curriculum. The videos and activities depict the confluence of regional biological, technical, and social phenomena to illustrate universal environmental concepts. The multimedia, modular approach is intended to address the varied learning styles of different students. Following random selection, teachers were randomly assigned to …
Preschool Social Skills: The Development Of Prosocial Interactions., Mary Boone Vonbrock Treuting
Preschool Social Skills: The Development Of Prosocial Interactions., Mary Boone Vonbrock Treuting
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study examined differing perceptions of teachers and parents pertaining to frequency and importance of social skills and problem behaviors in preschool children. Specifically, the present investigation considered social skills of preschool children considered to be At-Risk for educationally handicapping conditions as well as a group of Typical preschool children. Both teacher and parent ratings on the Social Skills Rating System (SSRS) (Gresham & Elliott, 1990) and the revised Conners Rating Scales (CRS), (Goyette, Conners, & Ulrich, 1978) were obtained from a sample of 95 preschool children. Fifty-two subjects were enrolled in an at-risk preschool program (i.e., Head Start) and …
An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Severity Of Specific Adhd Symptoms And Parent And Child Locus-Of-Control Orientation In The Expression Of Parental Stress., Esther Marie Winters
An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Severity Of Specific Adhd Symptoms And Parent And Child Locus-Of-Control Orientation In The Expression Of Parental Stress., Esther Marie Winters
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study investigated the effects of the child's specific ADHD symptoms, aggressive symptoms, and the parents' and child's locus of control orientation on parental stress. The frequently overlooked heterogeneous nature of the ADHD population was addressed, by assessing specific ADHD symptoms and the presence of aggressive symptomatology. Sixty boys, ages 6 to 12 years, diagnosed (using DSM-III-R criteria) as having ADHD by a licensed clinical psychologist in private practice, and their parents participated in the study. Parents were asked to sign a consent form and complete measures of parental locus of control and parenting stress. A children's locus of control …
The Methodological Issues Of Variance In Teacher Behavior And Student Achievement: The Relationship Of Variance To School And Teacher Effectiveness., Linda Jane Crone
The Methodological Issues Of Variance In Teacher Behavior And Student Achievement: The Relationship Of Variance To School And Teacher Effectiveness., Linda Jane Crone
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Three different issues were involved in this study. Issue I examined the means and variances of teacher behavior for teachers in effective school versus teachers in ineffective schools. Five teachers were evaluated from grade three and grade five of five effective and six ineffective schools (25 teachers from effective schools and 30 teachers from ineffective schools). Observations of seven dimensions of teaching behavior were conducted. In every case, the group means of teacher behavior were higher for the teachers in the effective school category. An examination of the coefficients of variation indicated that the dispersion of scores for the teachers …
Effects Of Stress, Dietary Restraint, And Disinhibition Upon Eating Habits And Nutrition., Barbara Ann Cubic
Effects Of Stress, Dietary Restraint, And Disinhibition Upon Eating Habits And Nutrition., Barbara Ann Cubic
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Restraint theory states that for some individuals physiological factors which normally result in eating compete with cognitive efforts to resist eating (i.e. dietary restraint). This disparity has been hypothesized to result in a chronic state of stress which leads to reduced behavioral control and increased negative affect. It has been presumed that dietary restraint is a precondition for overeating. Despite the legitimacy of proposing a link between stress, dietary restraint and overeating this interaction has not received intensive study. Furthermore, studies which have attempted to assess this relationship have not investigated the possible independent and interactive influences each of these …
Decolonizing The Text: Glissantian Readings In Caribbean And African-American Literatures., Debra Lynn Anderson
Decolonizing The Text: Glissantian Readings In Caribbean And African-American Literatures., Debra Lynn Anderson
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation proposes to derive a critical reading from the writings of the Martinican poet, novelist, and theorist, Edouard Glissant. This reading would most directly involve, but not limit itself to, literatures written by black writers from the Caribbean and the United States. As critics such as Christopher Miller and Anthony Appiah suggest, these literatures have become the ground upon which colonization is symbolically re-enacted. Criticism colonizes these literatures by its textual appropriation, its imposition of Western critical models, and by bringing its own assumptions to the text. The critically acclaimed prefaces of Jean-Paul Sartre ("Orphee noire") and Andre Breton …
Contact Phase: Forms Of Postmodernism. (Volumes I And Ii)., Michael Owen Crumb
Contact Phase: Forms Of Postmodernism. (Volumes I And Ii)., Michael Owen Crumb
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation examines variant mimetic strategies as the basis for a major dialectic within postmodern culture. The method applies and sometimes extends largely accepted theoretical statements on literary form. This synthesis provides an accessible, if at times complex, schema for organizing types, genres, and postmodern products based on image production and forms of spatial/temporal discourse. An investigation of several theorists and artists grounds a theory of literary and cinematic expressionism as the basis for postmodern culture, with particular emphasis given to the interpenetration of literary and cinematic styles in the twentieth century. An aesthetic dialectic emerges in the movement toward …
Attributional Style For Anger-Provoking Situations In Adolescents: Race, Sex, And Ses Variables., C. Diane Billings Findley
Attributional Style For Anger-Provoking Situations In Adolescents: Race, Sex, And Ses Variables., C. Diane Billings Findley
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Black Americans exhibit significantly more aggressive behaviors than do white Americans and these aggressive acts are most likely to be directed toward other blacks, frequently in response to relatively trivial matters (Bell, 1987; Curtis, 1974). Aggression most often occurs in areas of high population density, poverty, and low social status, suggesting that socioeconomic status is an important variable in aggressive behavior (Centerwall, 1984; Willie, 1983). Attribution refers to the perception or inference of causes of self or others' behavior. Attributional theory, which is concerned with the consequences of attributions rather than the attributions themselves (Kelley & Michela, 1980), has been …
Modernity And War In The Poetry Of T. S. Eliot., Patricia Anne Gabilondo
Modernity And War In The Poetry Of T. S. Eliot., Patricia Anne Gabilondo
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Although most readers of T. S. Eliot have agreed that the European experience of world war and the resultant political and cultural dislocations provided an important context and source of imagery for much of his work, what has not been recognized is Eliot's use of figures of war to represent the intimate yet antagonistic relations between the poet's writing of modernity and the text that is history. Beginning with a tropological analysis of Eliot's "A Note on War Poetry," relative to both the genre of war poetry and aesthetic modernity, this study examines the figural interpenetration of war and literary …
The Effects Of Exercise Stress On Equine Immune Function., Tammie Lee Keadle
The Effects Of Exercise Stress On Equine Immune Function., Tammie Lee Keadle
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The physiologic demands of exercise constitute a form of stress which is accompanied by modulation of immune responses. However, numerous studies in many different model systems have failed to clearly define the effects of exercise on immunity. Furthermore, the role of the neuroendocrine system in exercise-induced immunomodulation has been largely unexplored. To address these issues, we evaluated the effect of acute exercise stress on 3 indices of immune function in horses, before and after completion of a 12 week treadmill-based physical conditioning program. In addition, we determined the effects of corticosteroids, catecholamines, beta endorphin, and adrenocorticotropic hormone on these same …
Severe Chronic Pain Across The Lifespan: Is Age Related To Response To Treatment?, Susan Jacqueline Kotler-Cope
Severe Chronic Pain Across The Lifespan: Is Age Related To Response To Treatment?, Susan Jacqueline Kotler-Cope
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study evaluated the relationship of age to various aspects of the chronic pain syndrome before and after participation in a multidisciplinary 21-day inpatient treatment program for chronic pain at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Long Beach, California. Subjects were 135 male servicemen and veterans, ranging in age from 23 to 71 years. Age was significantly related to number of medical problems and duration of pain, but not number of pain sites, surgeries, or medications. While age was negatively, but weakly associated with cognitive aspects of depression on admission, it was not significantly related to either total score on …
Using Independence Training To Teach Independent Living Skills To Visually Impaired Children And Youth., Marie E. Taras
Using Independence Training To Teach Independent Living Skills To Visually Impaired Children And Youth., Marie E. Taras
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Two groups of students with visual impairments were taught various independent living skills. Five of the seven students also had a diagnosis of mental retardation. One group (three first graders) was taught the tasks of folding a shirt, making an emergency telephone call, and spreading soft foods with a knife. The other group (four young men) was taught to increase leisure skills through three different leatherwork tasks. Independence training was conducted in a group format, and included social learning components (e.g., self-evaluation, peer evaluation and reinforcement) in addition to traditional operant procedures (e.g., modeling, prompting). However, due to the presence …
"Mademoiselle De Maupin": A Close Reading And Study Of The Process Of Subjectivity In Theophile Gautier's Early Nineteenth Century Novel., Rebecca Lucille Tebeau
"Mademoiselle De Maupin": A Close Reading And Study Of The Process Of Subjectivity In Theophile Gautier's Early Nineteenth Century Novel., Rebecca Lucille Tebeau
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation proposes a close reading of Theophile Gautiers's Mademoiselle de Maupin. The purpose of this reading is to explore subjectivity by first assuming that it is a process, enacted by the protagonist's explorations of their own identities, but not an object contained in their elaborations. This view of subjectivity implies both the representational strategies of the protagonists, as well as the narrative strategies of the text. Since Mademoiselle de Maupin's narrative structure is so inconsistent and self-conscious, the explorations of self within the text draw attention to both the fiction of identity and the "identity" of fiction as a …

Bibl. Nat. Ms. Fr. 379: A Study In Word And Image. (Volumes I And Ii)., Adelaide Stuart Frazier
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The Bibl. Nat. ms. fr. 379 offers a religious, social, literary and artistic comment on the implications of the early sixteenth century world. The cult of the Virgin is considered as it supported and directed the poetry contests or puy at Rouen and Dieppe in their particular emphases on the Immaculate Conception and the Assumption of the Virgin, both ideas more dogmatic than scriptural. The conduct of the puy controlled the literary and artistic expressions on the subject. A detailed discussion submits the evidence that the poets reflected the secular world in their poems and the artists' illustrations often rejected …
Leader-Member Exchange Quality: The Relationship Of Similarity, Competence, And Selected Personality Variables., Antoinette S. Phillips
Leader-Member Exchange Quality: The Relationship Of Similarity, Competence, And Selected Personality Variables., Antoinette S. Phillips
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The Leader-Member Exchange (LMX) model (e.g., Cashman, Dansereau, Graen, & Haga, 1976; Dansereau, Cashman, & Graen, 1973) contends that leaders react differently with individual followers, rather than treating them homogeneously. Specifically, it assumes that leader behavior depends on relationships with individual work unit members. It further contends that followers vary in their perceptions of and reactions to leader behaviors. Followers, based on their interpersonal relationships (exchanges) with a leader, tend to form two qualitatively different groups, an in-group (higher quality) and an out-group (lower quality). Previous research has documented that insiders and outsiders may experience very different work outcomes. Factors …
Assessing The Process Of Therapeutic Change In The Eating Disorders., Erich George Duchmann
Assessing The Process Of Therapeutic Change In The Eating Disorders., Erich George Duchmann
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Comparative outcome and process research approaches have not yielded a complete understanding of the beneficial processes of psychotherapy. A recent approach to studying psychotherapy has involved the study of general stages of change that occur during all types of psychotherapy which are positively related to treatment outcome. The purpose of the present investigation was to test a stage of change model for the treatment of the eating disorders anorexia and bulimia nervosa. A review of the literature suggested that there were four general symptom domains that may be related to positive outcome in the treatment of eating disorders. Based on …

Investigating The Informational Nature Of A Modeled Visual Demonstration., Britta Gertrud Schoenfelder-Zohdi
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study investigated the informational nature of a modeled visual demonstration of slalom-ski type movements performed on a ski simulator. Hypotheses exist suggesting that a model may convey information primarily about movement coordination (Newell, 1985), or movement form (Whiting, 1988), but there is no empirical evidence that this information is used by the learner so that skill acquisition is facilitated. To investigate this information question, three experiments were conducted that replicated and extended a study by Whiting, Bijlard, and den Brinker (1987) by analyzing movement kinematics of subjects in addition to movement outcome. In the first experiment, the expert model's …

Attitudes Toward International Harmonization Efforts: A Cross-Cultural Study., M. Aileen Smith
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The last two decades have seen a significant increase in the number and size of multinational corporations and a growing global investment environment. Linked to that growth has been a call for standards that produce accounting information that is capable of crossing national boundaries. One of the groups of professional elites that have addressed the call for harmonized international accounting standards is the International Accounting Standards Committee (IASC). The IASC objective (IASC 1988, 1) states that it will "work generally for the improvement and harmonization of regulations, accounting standards and procedures ... " To address such a goal, the IASC …
