Mimesis And Poiesis In The Novel: William Faulkner's "Go Down, Moses" And The Mythopoeic Turn In The American Imagination., Paul Richard Connell Jan 1993

Mimesis And Poiesis In The Novel: William Faulkner's "Go Down, Moses" And The Mythopoeic Turn In The American Imagination., Paul Richard Connell

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In the course of its development as a genre, the novel shifted in the mid-twentieth century from a mimetic model grounded in imitation and colored with pessimism, to a poietic one based on discovery and novelty and foregrounded in hope. Precipitated by a crisis in representation after Joyce, the novel found in its own history, through the recuperation of older literary forms, new possibilities of representation, and shifted away from assumptions based on fact and history, to one grounded in miracle and myth. This shift was anticipated by the theories of the German Romantics Schlegel and Novalis and is adumbrated …

The Development Of An Inventory To Measure Bereavement., David Nicholas Hayes Jan 1993

The Development Of An Inventory To Measure Bereavement., David Nicholas Hayes

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study describes the development of a self-report inventory to measure bereavement. The inventory was called the Hayes Bereavement Inventory (HBI). Items for the inventory were provided by four grief therapists with at least three years of experience in bereavement counseling. Items were written in a format similar to the Beck Depression Inventory. Four hundred and forty adults bereaved in the past five years completed the bereavement inventory, three widely used self-report measures of depression, anxiety, and anger, and the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire. Respondents lost loved ones to death from a variety of causes which included medical diseases, car accidents, …

Attentional Bias And Subjective Risk In Hypochondriacal Concern., Polly Beth Hitchcock Jan 1993

Attentional Bias And Subjective Risk In Hypochondriacal Concern., Polly Beth Hitchcock

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Although cognitive theories suggest that attentional bias to illness stimuli and inflation of subjective risk of future negative health events are etiologically related to hypochondriacal concern, little empirical research has been conducted on these cognitive distortions. The present study investigated attentional bias, as inferred from RTs on an attentional search information processing paradigm, and subjective risk, as measured by probability judgments of future health events, in 200 medical outpatients differing in level of hypochondriacal concern. It was hypothesized that hypochondriacal concern would be associated with specific cognitive biases for illness-related, as opposed to socially threatening, stimuli. It was also hypothesized …

Differential Comparison Standards And Their Subsequent Effects On The Agreement Between Self- And Supervisor Performance Appraisal Ratings., Brian Wayne Schrader Jan 1993

Differential Comparison Standards And Their Subsequent Effects On The Agreement Between Self- And Supervisor Performance Appraisal Ratings., Brian Wayne Schrader

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examined differential comparison standards (i.e., comparative bases for performance evaluation) and their effects on the level of agreement between supervisory and self-raters (i.e., subordinates) within the context of a performance appraisal system. The purpose of the research was to determine whether differential comparison standards represented an underlying mechanism in the traditionally poor correlational relationship between self-supervisor performance ratings. Supervisor and subordinate rater dyads (N = 106 dyads) evaluated job performance across three dimensions using five different comparison standards (ambiguous, internal, absolute, relative, and multiple) in addition to providing preference, availability, and relevancy ratings. Results supported the hypotheses indicating …

Psychosocial Co-Factors And Hiv Disease Status., Bradley Thomas Thomason Jan 1993

Psychosocial Co-Factors And Hiv Disease Status., Bradley Thomas Thomason

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Concern over the devastating effects of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) has been met with rigorous research efforts by allied health professions. Identifying variables, or co-factors, that contribute to the progression of HIV has been of increased interest to health professionals in recent years. Social scientists as well as medical professionals have begun to offer evidence that certain psychosocial co-factors are important in predicting the health status of HIV-positive individuals. A few models have been offered to illustrate the interrelations among psychosocial co-factors and HIV disease. Stress, social support, coping, and mood states constitute the most frequently researched variables in …

The Antecedents And Consequences Of Transformational Leadership., Andrew J. Meibaum Iii Jan 1993

The Antecedents And Consequences Of Transformational Leadership., Andrew J. Meibaum Iii

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The present study examined the relations among theoretical antecedents and consequences of transformational leadership style. Thirty hospital CEOs completed questionnaires measuring self-esteem, autonomy, need for achievement, dominance, and hospital strategy. In addition, 214 subordinates rated the leadership style of the 30 CEOs. The hypothesized links between CEO personality and transformational leadership style were not supported. Also, the hypothesized relation between transformational leadership style and organizational effectiveness was not supported. Supplemental analyses revealed a direct relation between CEO self-esteem and organizational effectiveness and between organizational strategy and organizational effectiveness. Specifically, CEO self-esteem was positively related to organizational effectiveness, and a domain-offensive …

Recognition And Production Of Facial Emotion By Autistic Children., Steven R. Love Jan 1993

Recognition And Production Of Facial Emotion By Autistic Children., Steven R. Love

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Autistic males ages 8 to 16 made significantly more errors than did chronologically and intellectually age-matched nonautistic normal and mentally retarded males on emotion recognition tasks using audiotaped and videotaped emotion sequences. The audiotape and videotape included "happy" "sad," "scared," "angry," and "no emotion" sequences. Emotional sequences included emotionally relevant verbal content and the length of verbalized material in the emotional sequences was limited to between 4 and 10 words. Videotaped sequences showed actors portraying facial expressions and verbal content consistent with the five emotion states. Both tapes were rated by normal adults and children as containing "socially valid" representations …

Development And Evaluation Of An Expert System Approach To Uneven-Aged Management Of Loblolly-Shortleaf Pine Stands In The West Gulf Region., Alfredo Baptista Lorenzo

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Forest managers expend significant time and effort seeking, organizing, and synthesizing information relevant to making effective forestry decisions. Oftentimes, they must rely on the knowledge and experience of human experts, a resource that is in short supply, requires many years to acquire, and is concentrated in a few individuals. This research task suggests expert systems as one viable solution to the problems of technology transfer and automating and maintaining expertise in consistent and usable form. Expert systems are practical computer programs which solve problems that were previously considered only solvable by human expertise. The expert system developed in this research, …

Use Of The History Of Science In A Nonscience Majors Course: Does It Affect Students' Understanding Of The Nature Of Science?, Linda Easley Roach Jan 1993

Use Of The History Of Science In A Nonscience Majors Course: Does It Affect Students' Understanding Of The Nature Of Science?, Linda Easley Roach

In response to a call for more research into using the history of science to teach the nature of science, a call for curriculum materials for inclusion of the nature of science in undergraduate nonscience majors courses, and in keeping with the nature of science described in the literature, interactive nature-of-science historical vignettes were utilized in a quantitative and qualitative investigation. Interactive nature-of-science historical vignettes employ the interrupted story form and binary opposites involving conflict to generate student participation and spark discussion about the nature of science. They were utilized as an experimental technique in a university level, introductory nonscience …

Mathematics And Gender: A General History Of Recent Research And Common Perceptions., Mary E. Reeves Jan 1993

Mathematics And Gender: A General History Of Recent Research And Common Perceptions., Mary E. Reeves

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In the last two decades a tremendous volume of research data has been collected about differences between female and male students in mathematics. But although the amount of data collected has been large, there have been few conscious attempts to understand this data in social, economic, technological, and political terms. This history of academic research on gender differences connects the explosion of academic interest in the 1970s and 1980s with the launch of Sputnik in 1957 and the sense of technological crisis that pervades mathematics education and popular consciousness. The emergence of "Women's Lib" and interest in gender equity in …

Nietzsche And Heraclitus, Virginia Lyle Jennings Howard Apr 1992

Nietzsche And Heraclitus, Virginia Lyle Jennings Howard

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Nietzshe's philosophical ideas are closely based upon his early studies of Greek thought. Unless his philosophy is approached from the standpoint of its foundation in the ancient Greeks, Heraclitus in particular, then it can be difficult to gain a coherent picture of Nietzsche's thought. In Heraclitus he found an affirmation of precisely what he loved about the ancient Greek way of life, its most fundamental concept: the contest. The Greeks embrace their apparently terrible characteristics and control them with a rule-governed contest. In the same way Heraclitus's universe consists of opposites which strive for dominion, not through wars of annihilation, …

The Relation Between Stress And Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus: Physiologic Arousal Or Disruption Of Compliance?, Virginia Diane Garrett

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The relations between minor life events, compliance, urinary free cortisol, and blood glucose in 40 adults with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus was examined. Specifically, this study explored whether naturally-occurring minor stressful events had disruptive effects on metabolic control through: (a) an arousal mechanism mediated by cortisol, (b) disruption of the individual's adherence to prescribed treatment, (c) a combination of arousal and disruption of compliance, or (d) a third, unspecified mechanism. Stress did not influence metabolic control, either independently or via a stress-compliance or stress-arousal mechanism although stress was related to cortisol activity. Neither the direct effects of cortisol nor a cortisol …

The Effects Of Organoclay Adsorption On The Solidification Of Organic Wastes., Adam Faschan Jan 1992

The Effects Of Organoclay Adsorption On The Solidification Of Organic Wastes., Adam Faschan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The effects of organoclay adsorption on the leaching performance of solidified organic wastes was researched. Adsorption isotherms were developed for the adsorption of 1,2-dichlorobenzene (DCB), nitrobenzene (NB), and phenol by five different organoclays. Simulated liquid wastes containing DCB, NB, and phenol were solidified utilizing various combinations of Type I Portland cement and the five organoclays. The ratio of cement/clay utilized in each solidification matrix varied from 3/2 to 13/2. Linear and Langmuir adsorption isotherm models were utilized to predict the leaching performance of samples cured for 7, 28, and 90 days. The ratio of the actual leachate concentrations compared to …

The Rhetoric Of Science: A Case Study Of The Cold Fusion Controversy., David Lee Hatfield Jan 1992

The Rhetoric Of Science: A Case Study Of The Cold Fusion Controversy., David Lee Hatfield

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examines the circumstances surrounding and the rhetoric involved in the cold fusion controversy begun on March 23, 1989, when two University of Utah electrochemists, Martin Fleischmann and Stanley Pons, announced by press conference the discovery of room-temperature nuclear fusion. The dissertation seeks to determine to what extent a rhetorical analysis of cold fusion discourse may increase understanding of the controversy; the success of Fleischmann and Pons as scientific rhetors; the ways in which scientists' attitudes, values, and assumptions manifest themselves in the discourse; and finally, what may be learned about scientific discourse in general by examining the cold …

Community Versus The Imperial Mind: Images Of Civil Strife In Hawthorne's "The Marble Faun"., Henry Michael W Russell Jan 1992

Community Versus The Imperial Mind: Images Of Civil Strife In Hawthorne's "The Marble Faun"., Henry Michael W Russell

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Marble Faun allegorically represents the crisis of civil order in the American Republic in the 1850s foreshadowing the Civil War that erupted a year after the novel's publication. Hawthorne's last completed romance, set in Rome, suggests Americans must judge themselves against the community and continuity embodied in the European culture they had recently cast off. Challenging Emerson's doctrine that man may have an original relationship to history and the Creator, Hawthorne undermines the Founders' great idea: that an assembly of men could discover and formulate--in an act of the human mind--self-evident, inalienable rights that govern political and …

Echoes Of The Past In Flaubert's "L'Education Sentimentale", "Bouvard Et Pecuchet" And "Salammbo"., Deborah Lee Trott Pierce Jan 1992

Echoes Of The Past In Flaubert's "L'Education Sentimentale", "Bouvard Et Pecuchet" And "Salammbo"., Deborah Lee Trott Pierce

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Flaubert's novels demonstrate how the nineteenth-century's self-conception was defined by a disciplined obsession with the past. By looking at History, past and present, Flaubert's novels attempt to comprehend the individual and his evolving social reality. As evidenced in L'Education sentimentale, Bouvard et Pecuchet and Salammbo, one of Flaubert's main concerns is that of man's personal connection with history. The historian and the novelist both work within the constraints imposed upon them by language. Both take from the world around them to construct a narrative that in many ways is similar. By the fusion of the familiar in his work the …

The Effects Of Politically Biased Performance Appraisal On Ratee Job Attitudes And Desire To Respond To Feedback., Al Charles Schnur Jan 1992

The Effects Of Politically Biased Performance Appraisal On Ratee Job Attitudes And Desire To Respond To Feedback., Al Charles Schnur

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The present study examined the relationships of politics in appraisal and political use of appraisal to ratee attitudes and desire to respond to appraisal feedback. Hypotheses were developed from research on politics in appraisal, the feedback process model of Ilgen, Fisher, and Taylor, 1979, and equity theory (Adams, 1965). Negative relationships between politics and dependent variables were predicted. Two studies were conducted. Study 1 used 97 professionals in two organizations to test the effects of hypothetical political use of appraisal on their attitudes and desire to respond to appraisal feedback. Study 2 used 98 professionals in an insurance company to …
