Alcohol-Induced Risky Sexual Behavior Among Socially Anxious Drinkers, Meredith A. Terlecki, Ashley A. Richter, Clayton Neighbors, Chelsie M. Young, Julia D. Buckner
Alcohol-Induced Risky Sexual Behavior Among Socially Anxious Drinkers, Meredith A. Terlecki, Ashley A. Richter, Clayton Neighbors, Chelsie M. Young, Julia D. Buckner
Faculty Publications
Heavy college drinking is associated with risky sexual behavior. It is therefore important to identify groups that are especially vulnerable to alcohol-influenced sexual risk (e.g., unplanned/unexpected sex). Undergraduates with elevated social anxiety represent one such vulnerable group given that social anxiety is associated with fear of intimacy and heavier drinking in intimate situations and situations with expected negative affect. Drinking to cope with negative affect induced by fear of intimacy might render socially anxious undergraduates vulnerable to risky sexual behavior, yet no known studies have examined this relationship. The current study tested whether social anxiety was related to alcohol-related sexual …

Pragmatic Comprehension Of English Refusals By Spanish-English Bilinguals, Clevia Josefina Perez
Pragmatic Comprehension Of English Refusals By Spanish-English Bilinguals, Clevia Josefina Perez
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This study investigated the pragmatic comprehension and production of the speech act of refusals in English by a group of Spanish-English bilinguals (SEB) in comparison with native English speakers (NES), taking into account variables such as length of residency in the L2 environment, type of refusals and level of politeness. Other variables explored included speed of lexical access and working memory. SEB who learned English as adults were divided into two groups (short, long) according to their length of residency in an English language environment. All participants performed a Pragmatic Listening Task (PLT) and an oral production task both involving …
Perceived Teacher Preparation For Managing Parental Involvement In Parochial High Schools In A South Louisiana Catholic Diocese, Susan T. Crochet
Perceived Teacher Preparation For Managing Parental Involvement In Parochial High Schools In A South Louisiana Catholic Diocese, Susan T. Crochet
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The primary purpose of this exploratory study was to determine the perceived level of preparedness for managing parental involvement and the source of that preparation among secondary teachers in parochial high schools in a south Louisiana Catholic diocese. The target population of the study was secondary parochial school teachers in Louisiana. The accessible population was secondary parochial high school teachers in one Catholic Diocese in south Louisiana. Data were collected using a survey design. Key findings indicate that most of the participants held a bachelor’s degree and that most obtained their preparation for dealing with parental involvement on their own …
Becoming Engineers: Exploring Gender, Choice And Intersectional Identities Among Women In Undergraduate Engineering, Emily Gwen Blosser
Becoming Engineers: Exploring Gender, Choice And Intersectional Identities Among Women In Undergraduate Engineering, Emily Gwen Blosser
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Women’s participation in engineering remains one of the areas in American higher education in which gender inequality remains particularly pronounced. Much has been written about the chilly climate, unwelcoming occupational practices, and significant social barriers in engineering, which cause women to exit the field. Yet recent literature also suggests that woman’s minority status results not only from their attrition, but also from their relatively slow movement into engineering majors. In this sense, it is important that we begin to ask not only why women leave engineering, but also what reasons those women who actually pursue engineering as a college major, …
Executive Dysfunction Or State Regulation: A Dimensional Comparison Of Two Neuropsychological Theories Of Attention Disorder Symptoms Using Rdoc Paradigms, Justin Hull Ory
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Two leading theories regarding the neurocognitive basis of attentional disorders are the executive dysfunction theory and the state regulation theory. The executive dysfunction theory takes a top-down approach, explaining the symptoms of ADHD as a byproduct of general deficits in executive functioning—particularly disinhibition. The state regulation theory takes a bottom-up approach, explaining the symptoms of ADHD as a failure to be sufficiently aroused by, and subsequently engage with, less stimulating or rewarding tasks. These two theories predict different patterns of performance on tasks of executive functioning and attention, and research has demonstrated mixed support for both theories. The present study …
