An Initial Psychometric Evaluation Of The Korean Version Of The Matson Evaluation Of Social Skills With Youngsters-Ii (K-Messy-Ii), Jina Jang Aug 2017

An Initial Psychometric Evaluation Of The Korean Version Of The Matson Evaluation Of Social Skills With Youngsters-Ii (K-Messy-Ii), Jina Jang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Social skills impairment in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is often considered a hallmark of the disorder. Impairments in social skills impede the development of meaningful social relationships in individuals with ASD. As children get older, social relationships and environments become more complex, further increasing social skills impairments and distress. Although social skill training has received a lot of attention in the last decade, more reliable and valid social skills measures that are adapted to use in the ASD population are needed. Given that social norms and expectations differ across cultures, more culturally valid measures are needed. The Matson Evaluation of …

Educating The "Miseducated": A Case Study Of Middle School Teachers’ Experiences Providing Culturally Responsive Practices For Black Male Adolescents, Latrisha Yvette Dean

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This case study explored eight middle school teachers’ experiences working with Black adolescent males at different Louisiana schools. The selected participants represented various identities and shared their perceptions of their teaching and management practices. This case study also examined the teachers’ mindsets and beliefs about teaching Black male students. Finally, the teachers discussed how they perceive their own racial identity, gender, socioeconomic class, and other identities when working with Black males. I explored their experiences by conducting face-to-face semi-structured interviews. A comparative within-case and cross-case analysis was used to review the data and connect it to the research questions that …

Determination Of Recovery Time For A Simple Lifting Task Based On Weight, Frequency, And Duration Of The Lift, Milad Amini

LSU Master's Theses

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are a leading cause of injury in American workplaces which cost the economy billions of dollars each year. Extensive research has shown that job fatigue is one of the causes of MSDs. Allocating frequent and adequate rest break is suggested to be an effective method in mitigating the work overload and fatigue prevention. The objective of this research was to determine rest periods for lifting tasks based on the activity heart rate and by using a set of task variables. Twenty-four university male students took part in this study. The two response variables were perceived level of …

Low-Income Childless Young Adults' Marriage And Fertility Frameworks, Heather M. Rackin, Christina M. Gibson-Davis Aug 2017

Low-Income Childless Young Adults' Marriage And Fertility Frameworks, Heather M. Rackin, Christina M. Gibson-Davis

Faculty Publications

The authors investigated how low-income young adults without children understand marriage and fertility. Data come from the Becoming Partners and Parents Study (N = 69), a qualitative study of African American adults aged 18 to 22 in a mid-size southern city. This is the first study to analyze young, low-income, childless, and unmarried Black respondents' frameworks (i.e., internal understandings of the world) of marriage and fertility. In contrast to research conducted on parents, this research on childless adults indicated a narrative in which there were close connections between marriage and fertility and an economic bar adhered to both marriage and …

As the application of genomic data in phylogenetics has become routine, a number of cases have arisen where alternative data sets strongly support conflicting conclusions. This sensitivity to analytical decisions has prevented firm resolution of some of the most recalcitrant nodes in the tree of life. To better understand the causes and nature of this sensitivity,we analyzed several phylogenomic data sets using an alternativemeasure of topological support (the Bayes factor) that both demonstrates and averts several limitations of more frequently …

Kefir is a fermented milk product that is a good source of protein and health-promoting bacteria. It has the potential to improve recovery from exercise and the health and well-being of cancer survivors. The purpose of this study was to explore cancer survivor attitudes about and acceptance of a kefir recovery beverage made from cultured milk, whole fruit, natural sweeteners, and other natural ingredients. Kefir was made by inoculating and fermenting milk with kefir grains. The kefir was then mixed with a fruit base and given to cancer survivors (n = 52) following a bout of exercise. Participants evaluated the …

The Characteristics Of Interpersonal Networks In Disaster Response*, Christopher Kenny, Christopher Weber, Kathleen Bratton Jun 2017

The Characteristics Of Interpersonal Networks In Disaster Response*, Christopher Kenny, Christopher Weber, Kathleen Bratton

Faculty Publications

It is well established that discussion networks have meaningful consequences for a variety of sociopolitical attitudes and behavior. In this project, we explore how social structure shapes reactions to disaster; in particular, the 2010 BP oil spill. We address the questions of how networks are relied upon following community-wide disaster, and to what extent these networks mirror social structures in other domains. To examine these questions, we analyze data that experimentally vary the commonly employed discussion “name-generator” questions to see if oil spill discussants are fundamentally different from important matters discussants. Relative to “important matters” discussants, we find strong support …

Characterization Of Graphomotor Functions In Individuals With Parkinson’S Disease And Essential Tremor, Nan Ying Yu, Arend W.A. Van Gemmert, Shao Hsia Chang

Faculty Publications

In this study, we explored the relationship between the clinical features and motor impairments related to the graphomotor function of individuals with Parkinson’s disease (PD) and essential tremor (ET). We recruited 46 participants: 12 with PD, 13 with ET, and 21 controls. All participants were asked to perform six graphomotor tasks on a digitizer tablet: drawing straight lines, cursive-connected loops, discrete circles, and continuous circles, and making goal-aimed movements with a stylus in two different directions with three different accuracy constraints. The results showed that although participants with PD were able to draw straight lines slightly faster than controls, they …

Faculty Publications

This study focuses on librarian-led classes within an introductory seminar course for first-year undergraduates and whether the length of information literacy sessions affects student learning. The authors question how much library interaction is actually beneficial for students? At what point do the returns plateau? With limited resources, what is the most efficient means of reaching students in-person?

Breeding Behavior Of Female White-Tailed Deer Relative To Conception: Evidence For Female Mate Choice, Jeffery D. Sullivan, Stephen S. Ditchkoff, Bret A. Collier, Charles R. Ruth, Joshua B. Raglin Apr 2017

Breeding Behavior Of Female White-Tailed Deer Relative To Conception: Evidence For Female Mate Choice, Jeffery D. Sullivan, Stephen S. Ditchkoff, Bret A. Collier, Charles R. Ruth, Joshua B. Raglin

Faculty Publications

Female white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) are thought to choose between two behavioral strategies to maximize the quality of potential mates: sit and wait, characterized by concentrating activity within a restricted area, and excursive behavior, characterized by increased activity and excursions outside the home range. As movement patterns may influence conception, our goal was to examine the patterns of female white-tailed deer movements to evaluate which breeding strategy was employed. We equipped 36 female white-tailed deer with GPS collars from August 2013 to December 2015. We found that movement rate and probability of activity were greatest near the peak of the …

Stability And Robustness Analysis For Human Pointing Motions With Acceleration Under Feedback Delays, Paul Varnell, Michael Malisoff, Fumin Zhang Mar 2017

Stability And Robustness Analysis For Human Pointing Motions With Acceleration Under Feedback Delays, Paul Varnell, Michael Malisoff, Fumin Zhang

Faculty Publications

Pointer acceleration is often used in computer mice and other interfaces to increase the range and speed of pointing motions without sacrificing precision during slow movements. However, the effects of pointer acceleration are not yet well understood. We use a system perspective and feedback control to analyze the effects of pointer acceleration. We use a new pointer acceleration model connected in feedback with the vector integration to endpoint model for pointing motions. When there are no feedback delays, we prove global asymptotic stability of the closed loop system for a general class of acceleration profiles. We also prove robustness under …

Message from President: Readers of the now old-fashioned novels of Dorothy Sayers and Evelyn Waugh remember an era of academic elegance: a time when colleges and universities reveled in custom, costume, character, and social complexity. True, the jottings of the aforementioned writers caricatured an academic establishment that hovered on the thin line between comedy (per academic satire) and criminality (per detective novels), yet they also portrayed a cultural elite that occasionally fell into absurdity or even lawlessness owing to its willingness to stand apart from the norm. Rank-and-file citizens might puzzle over the singing of the Mallard Song at All …
