Generalizability Of Multiple Measures Of Treatment Integrity: An Empirical Replication, Elizabeth Wilson Nov 2017

Generalizability Of Multiple Measures Of Treatment Integrity: An Empirical Replication, Elizabeth Wilson

LSU Master's Theses

Treatment integrity is essential for the implementation of interventions in schools as it determines the accuracy or consistency with which different components of a treatment are implemented. There are no current standards regarding the best practices in treatment integrity measurement; however, higher integrity is associated with enhanced student outcomes. At present, there is no database providing information on treatment integrity for practitioners, researchers, and policy-makers to reference for choosing an appropriate level of treatment integrity needed for certain interventions for certain problems. Consequently, there is a need to establish convergent validity among different methods of treatment integrity measurement using multiple …

Folie Et Stratégies D'Évasion Dans Les Romans Postcoloniaux Au Maghreb (Maroc-Algérie) Et À L'Île Maurice, Fouzilla Saady Nov 2017

Folie Et Stratégies D'Évasion Dans Les Romans Postcoloniaux Au Maghreb (Maroc-Algérie) Et À L'Île Maurice, Fouzilla Saady

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

My dissertation " Folie et stratégies d'évasion dans les romans postcoloniaux au Maghreb (Maroc-Algérie) et à l'Île Maurice." argues that madness is a universal theme in the postcolonial context by Maghrebian and Mauritian women authors such as Nadia Chafik, Leïla Marouane, Nina Bouraoui, Ananda Devi, Nathacha Appanah, Marie-Thérèse Humbert. We include Tahar Ben Jelloun, Patrick Chamoiseau and Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio because of their approach to gender, feminine and masculine.

This research is not a question of making a psychoanalytic study of madness, but of a literary analysis of this theme in the texts of our corpus. We focus on …

Francolouisianais In The 21st Century: Redrawing Identity Lines In A Community Experiencing Language Shift, Marguerite L. Perkins Nov 2017

Francolouisianais In The 21st Century: Redrawing Identity Lines In A Community Experiencing Language Shift, Marguerite L. Perkins

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The francophonie of south Louisiana today is characterized by a great deal of diversity - in terms of ethnicity, language practices, cultural practices, geography, and experience. The academic literature does not always reflect this diversity, however. Some ethnic groups are overshadowed by others in academic study, and the lines between them are often uncritically blurred. Discussions of language shift are regularly mired in assumptions of individuals’ complete linguistic and cultural assimilation based solely on their native use of English.

In this dissertation, I seek to problematize traditional accounts of assimilation and collective ethnic identity by highlighting the ways in which …

Disproportionality In Discipline Practices: Assessing The Impact Of Unique Contextual Factors Resulting From School Reforms On Discipline, Stephanie Marie Grant Nov 2017

Disproportionality In Discipline Practices: Assessing The Impact Of Unique Contextual Factors Resulting From School Reforms On Discipline, Stephanie Marie Grant

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

With the implementation of the No Child Left Behind act (NCLB, 2001) sweeping school accountability reforms were instituted across the country. Failure to meet the accountability expectations set forth in the law resulted in punitive measures including school closure, restructuring, and chartering. The impact of the NCLB school reforms on student discipline outcomes at the school level, were assessed. Schools in the state of Louisiana were compared along two dimensions of reform, school type, (Charter vs Traditional) and school governance (Local vs State Run). Analyses indicated differences in student discipline outcomes based on reform variables.

School reforms impacted student outcomes, …

Unfriend Me! Applicant Reactions To The Use Of Social Networking Information During The Hiring Process, Byron Shane Lowery

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In today’s world, it seems everyone has a profile on at least one social networking website. Sites like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn have millions of users. As such, it should come to no surprise that information contained on these sites is being used in various ways. One of the more controversial uses of this information is to screen potential job applicants during the hiring process. Indeed, a growing trend among organizations has been to gather data on applicants in order to identify better employees. However, there is a growing concern about how applicants will react to this practice. Unfavorable reactions …

Teachers' Experience Of A Flood In Their School Community: Their Beliefs, Perceptions, And Thoughts About Practice, Caroline Tolentino Nov 2017

Teachers' Experience Of A Flood In Their School Community: Their Beliefs, Perceptions, And Thoughts About Practice, Caroline Tolentino

LSU Master's Theses

The increasing number of flooding incidences in Louisiana exposes a significant number of children to the possible traumatic effects of this natural disaster. Flooding takes a toll not only on families and children, but on teachers as well. While the effects of other types of disasters on children have been considered in previous studies, research has not thoroughly addressed the effects of flooding on children and on early childhood teachers. Teachers can be very instrumental in helping young children cope and making sure their needs are met after the experience of a traumatic event (Perry & Szalavitz, 2008; Le Brocque, …

Polynomial Regression Analyses Of Parental Desirable Responding, Megan Elizabeth Lilly Nov 2017

Polynomial Regression Analyses Of Parental Desirable Responding, Megan Elizabeth Lilly

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Child assessments have consistently yielded poor agreement between parent-child self-report measures and considerable research has failed to isolate the underlying source of the discrepancies. Validity testing has successfully been used to differentiate credible from non-credible performance, recognize feigned symptoms, and detect underestimates of ability in adults for decades (Sherman, 2015). Despite these potential benefits, attention to the importance of validity testing in the child assessment literature has been largely neglected. Many psychologists believe children are not capable of feigning or exaggerating their symptoms and lack the underlying motivations and incentives for deception found in adult assessments. Whereas, more research is …

Development Of A Mode And Destination Type Joint Choice Model For Hurricane Evacuation, Ruijie Bian Nov 2017

Development Of A Mode And Destination Type Joint Choice Model For Hurricane Evacuation, Ruijie Bian

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Since Hurricane Katrina, transit evacuation service has been seen to serve critical needs in affected cities and an increasing number of hurricanes have struck the east coast where more people rely on public transportation to evacuate. Thus, it is important to model mode choice in evacuation for a better estimation of evacuation transit demand. In this study, a joint mode and destination type choice model was estimated based on multiple post-storm behavioral surveys from the northeastern seaboard to the Gulf coast. A Nested Logit model specification was used to estimate this joint choice model. The estimated model showed significant linkage …

A Political Theory Of The Chinese Stock Market, Liang Kong Nov 2017

A Political Theory Of The Chinese Stock Market, Liang Kong

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The Chinese stock market crash of 2015 attracted much attention from both the media and academia. Yet it was not a unique incident. The Chinese stock market fluctuates more frequently and drastically than most mature stock markets. The purpose of this work is to explain these unusual stock market fluctuations through a political lens. Traditional financial models and behavioral finance cannot sufficiently explain the unusual fluctuations of the Chinese stock market. Traditional financial models find that economic forces cannot explain all fluctuations in China’s stock market. Behavioral finance attributes the fluctuations to investor’s irrational behavior without explaining why investors behave …

Predictors Of Positive Adjustment In A Sample Of Children Impacted By Hurricane Katrina, Jennifer C. Piscitello Nov 2017

Predictors Of Positive Adjustment In A Sample Of Children Impacted By Hurricane Katrina, Jennifer C. Piscitello

LSU Master's Theses

Natural disasters have a profound psychological impact on children and youth (Kelley et al., 2010; Lai et al., 2015; La Greca, et al., 1996; Vernberg et al., 1996). Much of the literature assessing risk and protective factors related to children’s post-disaster recovery has primarily focused on the development of significant clinical symptoms, largely ignoring factors associated with positive adjustment and resilience. The purpose of the current investigation was to examine parenting behaviors and family organization (i.e., child routines) as they relate to children’s self-esteem and self-reliance in a sample of 371 parent-child dyads impacted by Hurricane Katrina. A series of …

Faculty And Staff Knowledge And Perceptions Of African American College Students With Bipolar Disorder Experiences While Attending A Predominantly White Institution, Tiffany Sharell Zachery

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

There are few qualitative studies that document the knowledge and perceptions of faculty and staff about college students that has bipolar disorder. Previous studies of college students with mental health challenges have been found to focus only on a particular race, be outdated, largely quantified (Stein, 2014), or only focused on certain disorders such as: autism spectrum disorder, anxiety, or depression. This qualitative study responded to this gap in the literature by gaining an understanding of university faculty and staff knowledge and perceptions of African American college students with bipolar disorder experiences while attending a Predominantly White Institution, their perceptions …

The primary purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of using simulations as an instructional tool in an introductory doctoral level statistics course. The study focuses on the impacts of simulations on students’ attitudes and understanding of statistical concepts, as well as how the simulations could inspire students’ positive attitudes and improve statistics performance or would fail to help. In addition, since the statistics anxiety has been a primary obstacle to students’ statistics education, and “statistics anxiety” is experienced by as many as 80% of graduate students (Onwuegbuzie, 2004). The researcher is interested to explore the details of …

Weather Communication On Twitter: Identifying Popular Content And Optimal Warning Format Via Case Studies And A Survey Analysis, Joshua D. Eachus Nov 2017

Weather Communication On Twitter: Identifying Popular Content And Optimal Warning Format Via Case Studies And A Survey Analysis, Joshua D. Eachus

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The use of Twitter as a channel for weather information inspires a deeper analysis of key information nodes during episodes of high impact weather, especially local meteorologists. To optimize communication on the channel, it is important to understand what kinds of messages produce exposure and attention among users—which translates to knowledge that could improve the reach of a warning. Literature identifies two key models that well describe the cognitive processing of tweets and warnings. The Protective Action Decision Model (PADM) describes risk perception and the factors that enable or disable one from acting on a warning. Particularly through environmental and …

Statistical And Technical Methodologies For Duplicated Multiple-Samples Preference And Attribute Intensity Sensory Ranking Test, Kennet Mariano Carabante Ordonez

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Ranking tests are important preference and attribute difference tools for sensory evaluation. Replicated testing is used widely to reduce the number of panelists required in other sensory methods such as discrimination. The information regarding replications sensory ranking is limited. This research evaluated important statistical and technical aspects for the development of the foundation for duplicated sensory ranking tests. Three studies were accomplished: 1) A study of nonparametric analyses on real preference ranked data; 2) a sensitivity study of two samples serving protocols for duplicated visual ranking, and 3) protocols comparison in taste. In study 1, 125 panelists ranked in duplicates …

Assessing The Impact Of White Noise On Cognition In Individuals With And Without Adhd, Scott Roye Oct 2017

Assessing The Impact Of White Noise On Cognition In Individuals With And Without Adhd, Scott Roye

LSU Master's Theses

Although originally viewed only as a childhood disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is now recognized to persist into adulthood in many individuals. Adults with ADHD often demonstrate academic, cognitive, and general functioning deficits as a result of their symptoms. Theorists have suggested that features typically associated with ADHD, such as distractibility, excessive motor activity, and executive dysfunction, may stem from being under stimulated at a physiological level. This lack of arousal potentially causes individuals to seek out stimulation, making them more susceptible to background noise and other environmental stimuli. However, previous research primarily focuses on children and adolescents with …

In Praise Of Miscues And The Comprehension Of Complex Texts, Stephen B. Kucer Dr. Oct 2017

In Praise Of Miscues And The Comprehension Of Complex Texts, Stephen B. Kucer Dr.

The Journal of Balanced Literacy Research and Instruction

The reading of complex texts is a critical dimension of the Common Core State Standards. We have little knowledge, however, of the impact of reader miscues on the comprehension of such texts. This issue is explored through a look at fourth graders transactions with literary and scientific texts. The impact of two types of reading behaviors on comprehension are examined: (1) portions of text read with no miscues and (2) portions of text read with meaning maintaining miscues. It was found that readers were significantly more likely to comprehend and recall information that was read with meaning maintaining miscues than …

Using Their Own Stories: A Culturally Relevant Response To Intervention, Maggie Struck, Mark D. Vagle Oct 2017

Using Their Own Stories: A Culturally Relevant Response To Intervention, Maggie Struck, Mark D. Vagle

The Journal of Balanced Literacy Research and Instruction

Driven by sociocultural theories, First Author, Maggie conducted a critical action research study of her attempts to enact culturally relevant practices in a Response to Intervention (RtI) reading group. A grounded theory approach informed the analysis of her data. In this paper, we theorize three themes that were generated from the data analysis. We assert that in order to prevent RtI from becoming another unsuccessful, de-contextualized, large-scale effort, teachers and students would benefit from a culturally relevant response to intervention—a commitment to locate the contextual contingencies in which RtI is being implemented; to pay attention to what happens in the …

English Language Learners: Problems And Solutions Found In The Research Of General Practitioners Of Early Childhood, Douglas Bell, Barry L. Bogan

The Journal of Balanced Literacy Research and Instruction

Increasing numbers of English Language Learners (ELLs) in early childhood classrooms have created challenges for in-service teachers in the general education setting. Traditional teacher preparation programs tend to lack a curriculum that focuses on second language teaching and learning. This paper reviews the problems facing teachers with regard to teaching at the level of research based best practices for ELLs. In addition, a critical examination of the literature has yielded basic solutions for practitioners. These solutions encompass programmatic (classroom) aspects, teacher training, and classroom pedagogy. The authors have concluded that based on the present literature, more research is needed to …

The Evolution Of What’S Hot In Literacy, Jack Cassidy, Evan Ortlieb Oct 2017

The Evolution Of What’S Hot In Literacy, Jack Cassidy, Evan Ortlieb

The Journal of Balanced Literacy Research and Instruction

The annual What’s Hot, What’s Not in Literacy survey has served to highlight topics receiving attention in the field over the last 15 years. What we know as literacy has drastically shifted alongside advances in legislation, policy, and curriculum. As a result, what was once hot may subsequently receive less attention or even fall of the list entirely. So what happens to those topics that were once hot? Are they still valued enough by classroom teachers to warrant attention within their literacy programs? This article examines the context around previously hot topics and characterizes current teacher sentiments towards these topics …

Effect Of Increased Exposure To Informational Text On Teacher Attitude In The Elementary Classroom, Heather D. Kindall, Janet Penner-Williams Oct 2017

Effect Of Increased Exposure To Informational Text On Teacher Attitude In The Elementary Classroom, Heather D. Kindall, Janet Penner-Williams

The Journal of Balanced Literacy Research and Instruction

Common Core State Standards and our changing society requires that informational text, an often neglected genre, receive an equal proportion of time in K-4 classrooms. Research has shown that teacher attitude and belief play a central role in teaching practice, and informational text has historically been viewed in a negative light by elementary teachers. In this study the authors look at pre-service elementary teacher education as an avenue for an attitude change in regards to informational text. Attitudes toward specific genres were analyzed using a pre/post survey with a treatment group receiving focused instruction on using informational text. The results …

Proverbs: Wisdom Of The Ages In Contemporary Literacy Instruction, Bonnie Johnson Oct 2017

Proverbs: Wisdom Of The Ages In Contemporary Literacy Instruction, Bonnie Johnson

The Journal of Balanced Literacy Research and Instruction

Proverbs, sayings that give advice or offer insights about life, are found in all countries and cultures. They are used in societies with writing systems and in those whose communications rely on oral traditions. Proverbs are concise, some rhyme, several use alliteration, and many are metaphorical. They can be found in ancient and contemporary literature. This article discusses the multicultural nature of proverbs and gives examples from various locales. The article also illustrates how proverbs lend themselves to interdisciplinary literacy integration. The use of proverbs in implementing specific grade-level Common Core State Standards is addressed. Resources for proverb study are …

Building On What Children Bring: Cognitive And Sociocultural Approaches To Teaching Literacy, Catherine Compton-Lilly Oct 2017

Building On What Children Bring: Cognitive And Sociocultural Approaches To Teaching Literacy, Catherine Compton-Lilly

The Journal of Balanced Literacy Research and Instruction

This paper examines what is meant by “building on what children bring.” While many educators maintain that teachers need to build on what children bring to classrooms, the field of education has constructed different understandings of what this entails. This paper explores two different conceptions of what children bring: those grounded in cognitive theories about reading and those grounded in sociocultural theories of reading/literacy. I suggest that despite historical splits in the reading/literacy field that educators must balance cognitive and sociocultural considerations in order to access the vast range of knowledges that children bring to literacy learning. After exploring cognitive …

The Impact Of Video Self-Reflection On Teacher Practice, Michelle Grantham-Caston Oct 2017

The Impact Of Video Self-Reflection On Teacher Practice, Michelle Grantham-Caston

LSU Master's Theses

The purpose of this research study was to analyze the teacher’s ability to utilize video self-reflection as a structured learning tool to enhance their teaching practice and CLASS scores. Research has demonstrated that teachers are better able to be self-reflective when provided with a framework (Calandra, Gurvitch, & Lund, 2008). Literature has documented video self-reflection and CLASS as links for growth in children and professional development support for teachers (Pianta, Mashburn, Downer, Hammer, & Justice, 2008). Results from the present study indicated that the teachers became increasingly aware of the CLASS Toddler tool criteria through scoring their own behaviors, which …

Reported Child Sexual Abuse: Impact Of Adaptive Skills And Association With Psychological Adjustment, Seandra Jean Walker Oct 2017

Reported Child Sexual Abuse: Impact Of Adaptive Skills And Association With Psychological Adjustment, Seandra Jean Walker

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The impact of sexual abuse on children’s psychological well-being is well recognized. Considerable research has evaluated the deleterious effects and various protective and risk factors to victimization. Research has shown intense and pervasive psychological symptoms preceding child sexual abuse; however, many studies solely report long-term effects of sexual abuse, or rely on retrospective accounts. Additionally, there is a lack of research on the relationship between psychological adjustment and adaptive skills shortly after child sexual abuse. This study investigated the relationship between psychological problems (i.e. posttraumatic symptomology, internalizing, and externalizing problems) and adaptive skills (i.e. adaptability, social skills, leadership, activities of …
