Sperm Quality Assessments For Endangered Razorback Suckers Xyrauchen Texanus, Jill A. Jenkins, Bruce E. Eilts, Amy M. Guitreau, Chester R. Figiel, Rassa O. Draugelis-Dale, Terrence R. Tiersch

Faculty Publications

Flow cytometry (FCM) and computer-assisted sperm motion analysis (CASA) methods were developed and validated for use with endangered razorback suckers Xyrauchen texanus collected (nZ64) during the 2006 spawning season. Sperm motility could be activated within osmolality ranges noted during milt collections (here 167-343 mOsm/kg). We hypothesized that sperm quality of milt collected into isoosmotic (302 mOsm/kg) or hyperosmotic (500 mOsm/kg) Hanks' balanced salt solution would not differ. Pre-freeze viabilities were similar between osmolalities (79%G6 (S.E.M.) and 76%G7); however, post-thaw values were greater in hyperosmotic buffer (27%G3 and 12%G2; PZ0.0065), as was mitochondrial membrane potential (33%G4 and 13%G2; PZ0.0048). Visual estimates …

Habitat Use Does Not Reflect Habitat Quality For Henslow's Sparrows (Ammodramus Henslowii) Wintering In Fire-Managed Longleaf Pine Savannas, Erik I. Johnson, Jennifer K. Dimiceli, Philip C. Stouffer, Matthew E. Brooks Jan 2011

Habitat Use Does Not Reflect Habitat Quality For Henslow's Sparrows (Ammodramus Henslowii) Wintering In Fire-Managed Longleaf Pine Savannas, Erik I. Johnson, Jennifer K. Dimiceli, Philip C. Stouffer, Matthew E. Brooks

Faculty Publications

Interpreting habitat quality requires an understanding of the consequences of habitat use because bird density alone may not reflect habitat quality. Although habitat use can be readily quantified, subsequent effects remain elusive for most species, especially for migrants on the wintering grounds. Wintering Henslow's Sparrow (Ammodramus henslowii) densities in Longleaf Pine (Pinus palustris) savannas are fire-dependent, with highest bird densities in the first winter after a fire, but reduced density in subsequent winters without fire. We determined habitat characteristics associated with variation in bird density in the first and second winters following fire and then followed birds' diet, condition, and …

The Difference Between Breeding For Nutrient Use Efficiency And For Nutrient Stress Tolerance, Ciro Maia, Júlio César Dovale, Roberto Fritsche-Neto, Paulo Cezar Cavatte, Glauco Vieira Miranda

Faculty Publications

This study aimed to verify the relationship between breeding for tolerance to low levels of soil nutrients and for nutrient use efficiency in tropical maize. Fifteen inbred lines were evaluated in two greenhouse experiments under contrasting levels of N and P. The relationship between nutritional efficiency and tolerance to nutritional stress was estimated by the Spearman ranking correlation between the genotypes for the traits related to N and P use efficiency and phenotypic plasticity indices. The lack of relationship between the traits, in magnitude as well as significance, indicates that these characters are controlled by different gene groups. Consequently, simultaneous …

The present study evaluated selected East African (EA) sweetpotato varieties for storage root dry matter and nutrient content and obtained information on the potential contributions of the varieties to alleviate vitamin A and mineral deficiencies. Roots obtained from 89 farmer (white- and orange-fleshed) varieties and one introduced variety ('Resisto') were analyzed for storage root quality using near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy technology. Location differences were only significant for starch content. The σ2G variance was significant (P < 0.01) for all the traits except sucrose content. Overall, the farmer varieties had higher dry matter, higher starch, and lower sucrose contents than the control clone, 'Resisto'. It is these qualities that make sweetpotato attractive as a starchy staple in EA. A low population's mean β-carotene content (19.0 ppm)was observed. However, deep orange-fleshed farmer varieties, 'Carrot_C', 'Ejumula', 'Carrot Dar', 'Mayai', and 'Zambezi', had β-carotene content that can meet 350% or greater of recommended daily allowance (RDA) with 250-g serving to a 5- to 8-year-old child. More but light orange-fleshed farmer varieties 'K-118', 'K-134', 'K-46', 'KMI61', 'MLE162 Nakahi', 'PAL161', 'Sowola6', 'Sponge', 'SRT34 Abuket2', 'SRT35 Anyumel', 'SRT52', and 'Sudan' can provide 50% to 90% RDA of pro-vitamin A for the child. The root minerals' content was generally low except for magnesium whose content can meet 50% or greater RDA in many farmer varieties. However, in areas with high sweetpotato consumption, varieties 'Carrot_C', 'Carrot Dar', 'KRE nylon', 'MLE163 Kyebandula', and 'SRT49 Sanyuzameza' can make good intakes of iron, zinc, calcium, and magnesium. In conclusion, some EA farmer varieties can contribute greatly to alleviation of vitamin A deficiency and substantial mineral intakes.

Influence Of Sand Topdressing On Bermudagrass Thatch Decomposition, Dustin S. Parker

LSU Master's Theses

Methods to control thatch layers in mature turfgrasses have relied on sand-topdressing and/or mechanical removal. Mechanical removal of thatch through vertical mowing and aerification is effective but disruptive to playing surfaces compared to sand topdressing. As a result, many turf managers have opted to implement sand-topdressing regiments as their primary method for reducing thatch buildup. This research was conducted to 1) determine the effect of cultivar on thatch decomposition and 2) examine the effect of sand topdressing on thatch microenvironment and decomposition. Sand topdressing treatments consisting of sterilized or non-sterilized sand applied at 0.4 cm 14 d-1 or as a …

It is imperative that methods to successfully cryopreserve large equine embryos or develop reliable methods to determine embryo size before collection. Therefore the objectives for this study were to quantify the amount of tritiated glycerol that would permeate various sizes of equine embryos and to determine if circulating progesterone concentration was correlated with in utero embryo size. Mean embryo diameter (± SEM) across treatments (1.4M and 3.4M tritiated glycerol) was 696.5µm ± 108.6µm and 925.9 µm ± 214.1µm, respectively and were not different (P=0.44). The percent permeation for …

Sources Of Self-Efficacy In Distance Runners, Ashley Ann Samson Jan 2011

Sources Of Self-Efficacy In Distance Runners, Ashley Ann Samson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Self-efficacy theory (Bandura, 1997) asserts that people will be more likely to engage in behaviors that they believe they can successfully perform and avoid behaviors in which they feel that they will be unsuccessful. Researchers have concluded that individuals with high levels of self-efficacy are more likely to pursue challenging goals, cope with pain, and persevere through setbacks, while those with low self-efficacy avoid challenges and tend to give up when confronted with obstacles (Llewellyn, Sanchez, Asghar, & Jones, 2008). Endurance sport, particularly distance running, is a domain in which being able to cope with pain and persevere through setbacks …

Optimization Of Adult Multipotent Stromal Cell-Bioscaffold Interactions For Tissue Regeneration With Bioreactors, Lin Xie

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Adult multipotent stromal cells (MSCs) in combination with biocompatible scaffolds may augment well-established medical and surgical techniques. Pre-implantation cell loading and viability on scaffold carriers followed by in vitro differentiation and extracellular matrix (ECM) formation contribute to the efficacy of in vivo tissue formation. Given the specificity of the parameters for each cell-scaffold construct, it is vital to assess the relative potential of various combinations to select the best option for various clinical needs. High demand for equine and human bone regeneration especially non-union fracture repair is still largely unaddressed. Therefore osteogenesis potential of both equine and human MSCs engrafted …

Comorbid Psychopathology In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders - Cut-Off Scores For The Autism Specturm Disorders-Comorbidity For Children (Asd-Cc), Ryan Thomas Thorson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Once considered rare, Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are increasingly becoming viewed as common disorders. Prevalence rates of ASD have increased drastically in recent years. Recent studies suggest comorbid psychopathology within ASD to be more common than previously thought. Though these deficits exist, specific instruments to diagnose psychopathology in this population do not yet exist. This highlights the underlying need for instruments to identify psychopathology in individuals with ASD. The aim of this study was to establish cut-off scores for the Autism Spectrum Disorder – Comorbidity for Children, an instrument designed to assess for comorbid psychopathology within individuals with ASD.
