The Twiggs Clay is an upper Eocene claystone found as discontinuous deposits downdip of the Fall Line in the Coastal Plain Province of eastern and central Georgia. A distinctive facies of the Twiggs is found in two lenses near the town of Wrens. The nature, origin, and potential commercial application of this resource are examined. Four strata and two mineralogic assemblages are recognized in the Wrens deposit. The lower three strata are near white in color and very low in density. These strata are mineralogically similar and are composed predominantly of disordered silica and smectite. The smectite is dioctahedral, and …

Sulfur And Oxygen Isotope Characterization Of An Eocene Playa Deposit, Northern High Plains, And Rainwater Sulfate, Baton Rouge, Usa, Kathryn Ann Jenkins Jan 2005

Sulfur And Oxygen Isotope Characterization Of An Eocene Playa Deposit, Northern High Plains, And Rainwater Sulfate, Baton Rouge, Usa, Kathryn Ann Jenkins

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis is composed of two independent chapters which are linked through the application of multiple stable isotope measurements of sulfate. Chapter 1 compares two Cenozoic playa deposits in the northern High Plains. Anomalous playa sulfate was discovered at Scotts Bluff which is speculated to have originated via the oxidation of volcanically emitted reduced sulfur gases. A question arises, then, is a volcanic origin of sulfate common for other Cenozoic playa deposits in the region. A complete stable isotope characterization was performed on the gypsum sulfate collected at Wolf Butte (nearby apparent playa setting) to determine if the sulfate has …

Environmental Benefits Realized From Eradication Of The Non-Indigenous Insect Anthonomus Grandis Boheman, The Cotton Boll Weevil, Marc Stephen Bordelon Jan 2005

Environmental Benefits Realized From Eradication Of The Non-Indigenous Insect Anthonomus Grandis Boheman, The Cotton Boll Weevil, Marc Stephen Bordelon

LSU Master's Theses

At least one third of the insecticide used in agriculture has been used to control the boll weevil in cotton. Historically, these insecticides have been toxic to humans and harsh on the environment. In addition, the intensive use of chemical insecticides to control the boll weevil results in the disruption of naturally occurring biological control factors that regulate other insect pest populations causing a chain reaction of secondary pest populations that require treatment followed by resurgence and repeat treatment. This situation has resulted in the development of resistance to insecticides, high control costs and unacceptable levels of chemical insecticide contamination …

Diagenesis Of Mudstones, Offshore Texas And Southwestern Louisiana, Maria Antonieta Pacheco Jan 2005

Diagenesis Of Mudstones, Offshore Texas And Southwestern Louisiana, Maria Antonieta Pacheco

LSU Master's Theses

Predicting the effects of mudstone diagenesis on reservoir quality is an important component of successful petroleum exploration and production programs. A regional study using chemical analyses from mudstone core cuttings and SP logs from 15 wells from the western Gulf of Mexico, including the Matagorda, Brazos, Mustang offshore areas, indicates that chemical changes with depth such as overall depletion of quartz and calcite; the illite-smectite conversion; and K2O enrichment occur in the mudstone Miocene interval of the study area. Mixing of depositional sources has been suggested to be the cause of similar chemical and mineralogical changes observed in Paleocene-Eocene and …

Quasicontinuous Derivatives And Viscosity Functions, Rodica Cazacu Jan 2005

Quasicontinuous Derivatives And Viscosity Functions, Rodica Cazacu

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this work we demonstrate how the continuous domain theory can be applied to the theory of nonlinear optimization, particularly to the theory of viscosity solutions. We consider finding the viscosity solution for the Hamilton-Jacobi equation H(x, y) = g(x), with continuous hamiltonian, but with possibly discontinuous right-hand side. We begin by finding a new function space Q(X,L), the space of equivalence classes of quasicontinuous functions from a locally compact set X to a bicontinuous lattice L and we will define on Q(X,L) the qo-topology, which is a variant of classical order topology defined on complete lattices. On this …

Interference Suppression And Parameter Estimation In Wireless Communication Systems Over Time-Varing Multipath Fading Channels, Jianqiang He

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on providing solutions to two of the most important problems in wireless communication systems design, namely, 1) the interference suppression, and 2) the channel parameter estimation in wireless communication systems over time-varying multipath fading channels. We first study the interference suppression problem in various communication systems under a unified multirate transmultiplexer model. A state-space approach that achieves the optimal realizable equalization (suppression of inter-symbol interference) is proposed, where the Kalman filter is applied to obtain the minimum mean squared error estimate of the transmitted symbols. The properties of the optimal realizable equalizer are analyzed. Its relations with …

Molecular Recognition And Its Underlying Mechanisms In Molecularly Imprinted Polymers, Ryan Simon Jan 2005

Molecular Recognition And Its Underlying Mechanisms In Molecularly Imprinted Polymers, Ryan Simon

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Molecular recognition in molecularly imprinting polymers (MIPs) is governed by two mechanisms: pre-organization of functional groups and shape specificity of the binding site. While pre-organization of functional groups has been studied extensively, shape specificity of the binding site has not been rigorously explored. The goal of this research is to determine the influence of shape specificity on molecular recognition in MIPs (Chapter 2). Once shape selectivity was proven to play a vital role in molecular recognition, it was important to determine if pre-organization of functional groups or shape specificity was the dominating factor in determining molecular recognition in the binding …

Characterization Of A Modified Poly(Propylene Imine) Dendrimer Host System, Amy D. Morara

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The research in this dissertation focuses on the design of a novel redox-responsive host system that has the ability to encapsulate guest molecules. The host at hand is a tri(ethylene oxide), TEO, pyrrole-terminated PPI dendrimer that possesses water-solubility as a result of the presence of the TEO chains on the pyrrole groups and redox-responsive activity from the pyrrole groups after their oligomerization. The pyrrole moieties at the periphery of the dendrimer exhibit the ability to be oligomerized by oxidation chemistry, and this is shown to aid in the retention and egress of guest molecules located within the dendrimer interior. These …

Hydrodynamic Analysis Of Compliant Journal Bearings, Amith Hanumappa Reddy Jan 2005

Hydrodynamic Analysis Of Compliant Journal Bearings, Amith Hanumappa Reddy

LSU Master's Theses

Compliant journal bearings are commonly used to support radial loads at extreme operating speeds and conditions where conventional bearings cannot operate. The journal and bearing system are supported by a thin lubricant film (gas) due to the hydrodynamic pressure distribution. To predict the bearing performance parameters, the compressible Reynolds equation is solved based on Infinitely Long Approximation (ILA), Finite Analysis (FA) and a new Modified Parabolic Approximation (MPA). The MPA method reduces the classical Reynolds equation to an ordinary differential equation. Appropriate equations and numerical solution are developed for treating a compressible Reynolds equation using MPA. A series of parametric …

Linear Versus Cyclic Inorganic/Organic Hybrid Oligomeric Molecules, Christopher Roland Sparrow Jan 2005

Linear Versus Cyclic Inorganic/Organic Hybrid Oligomeric Molecules, Christopher Roland Sparrow

LSU Master's Theses

The synthesis of the new aryl bis(β-diketone) ligand m-phenylenebis(acetylacetone) (m-pbaH2) allowed for complexation with copper(II) to form a 4-membered ring Cu4(m-pba)4. An alternate route, via a phospholene adduct, was implemented after difficulties in preparing the ligand via an azo sulfide conversion from m-phenylenediamine. The connection of two m-pba ligands coordinated to a Cu(II) metal ion causes a distortion along the axial position of the metal center. The pore has a diameter of (Cu-----Cu = 14.317 Å) when viewing opposite metal centers. An open coordination site along Cu(II) axial position may facilitate host-guest binding interactions. The concave shape of the host …
