Experimental Method And Statistical Analysis To Fit Tumor Growth Model Using Spect/Ct Imaging: A Preclinical Study, Ivan Hidrovo, Joyoni Dey, Megan E. Chesal, Dmytro Shumilov, Narayan Bhusal, J. Michael Mathis

Faculty Publications

Background: Over the last decade, several theoretical tumor-models have been developed to describe tumor growth. Oncology imaging is performed using various modalities including computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography (FDG-PET). Our goal is to extract useful, otherwise hidden, quantitative biophysical parameters (such as growth-rate, tumor-necrotic-factor, etc.) from these serial images of tumors by fitting mathematical models to images. These biophysical features are intrinsic to the tumor types and specific to the study-subject, and expected to add valuable information on the tumor containment or spread and help treatment plans. Thus, fitting …

Stabilization Of Nonlinear Time-Varying Systems Through A New Prediction Based Approach, Frederic Mazenc, Michael Malisoff Jun 2017

Stabilization Of Nonlinear Time-Varying Systems Through A New Prediction Based Approach, Frederic Mazenc, Michael Malisoff

Faculty Publications

We propose a prediction based stabilization approach for a general class of nonlinear time-varying systems with pointwise delay in the input. It is based on a recent new prediction strategy, which makes it possible to circumvent the problem of constructing and estimating distributed terms in the expression for the stabilizing control laws. Our result applies in cases where other recent results do not.

The Characteristics Of Interpersonal Networks In Disaster Response*, Christopher Kenny, Christopher Weber, Kathleen Bratton Jun 2017

The Characteristics Of Interpersonal Networks In Disaster Response*, Christopher Kenny, Christopher Weber, Kathleen Bratton

Faculty Publications

It is well established that discussion networks have meaningful consequences for a variety of sociopolitical attitudes and behavior. In this project, we explore how social structure shapes reactions to disaster; in particular, the 2010 BP oil spill. We address the questions of how networks are relied upon following community-wide disaster, and to what extent these networks mirror social structures in other domains. To examine these questions, we analyze data that experimentally vary the commonly employed discussion “name-generator” questions to see if oil spill discussants are fundamentally different from important matters discussants. Relative to “important matters” discussants, we find strong support …

A General Algorithm For Computing Simultaneous Prediction Intervals For The (Log)-Location-Scale Family Of Distributions, Yimeng Xie, Yili Hong, Luis A. Escobar, William Q. Meeker

Faculty Publications

Making predictions of future realized values of random variables based on currently available data is a frequent task in statistical applications. In some applications, the interest is to obtain a two-sided simultaneous prediction interval (SPI) to contain at least k out of m future observations with a certain confidence level based on n previous observations from the same distribution. A closely related problem is to obtain a one-sided upper (or lower) simultaneous prediction bound (SPB) to exceed (or be exceeded) by at least k out of m future observations. In this paper, we provide a general approach for computing SPIs …

Message from President: Followers of the headlines relish big events, whether mammoth economic downturns or raging battles or colossal storms. Leaders, especially those of the academic kind, most often deal with small events, whether the rotation of Chairs in a tiny department or the bursting of a water main on a satellite campus or declining enrollments in an unfashionable curriculum. Those seeking the reasons for the troubles faced by Louisiana higher education institutions might be well-advised to narrow their inquiries: to consider the role of the incremental in building or dissolving the grand—in, as it were, gradually pushing up or …

Sutured Floer Homology And Invariants Of Legendrian And Transverse Knots, John B. Etnyre, David Shea Vela-Vick, Rumen Zarev

Faculty Publications

Using contact-geometric techniques and sutured Floer homology, we present an alternate formulation of the minus and plus versions of knot Floer homology. We further show how natural constructions in the realm of contact geometry give rise to much of the formal structure relating the various versions of Heegaard Floer homology. In addition, to a Legendrian or transverse knot K ⊂ (Y, ξ) we associate distinguished classes (Formula presented) which are each invariant under Legendrian or transverse isotopies of K. The distinguished class (Formula presented) is shown to agree with the Legendrian/transverse invariant defined by Lisca, Ozsváth, Stipsicz and Szabó despite …

Empirical Model With Excellent Statistical Properties For Describing Temperature-Dependent Developmental Rates Of Insects And Mites, David A. Ratkowsky, Gadi V.P. Reddy May 2017

Empirical Model With Excellent Statistical Properties For Describing Temperature-Dependent Developmental Rates Of Insects And Mites, David A. Ratkowsky, Gadi V.P. Reddy

Faculty Publications

Previous empirical models for describing the temperature-dependent development rates for insects include the Brié re, Lactin, Beta, and Ratkowsky models. Another nonlinear regression model, not previously considered in population entomology, is the Lobry-Rosso-Flandrois model, the shape of which is very close to that of the Ratkowsky model in the suboptimal temperature range, but which has the added advantage that all four of its parameters have biological meaning. A consequence of this is that initial parameter estimates, needed for solving the nonlinear regression equations, are very easy to obtain. In addition, the model has excellent statistical properties, with the estimators of …

Bloch Waves In Crystals And Periodic High Contrast Media, Robert Lipton, Robert Viator May 2017

Bloch Waves In Crystals And Periodic High Contrast Media, Robert Lipton, Robert Viator

Faculty Publications

Analytic representation formulas and power series are developed describing the band structure inside periodic photonic and acoustic crystals made from high contrast inclusions. Central to this approach is the identification and utilization of a resonance spectrum for quasi-periodic source free modes. These modes are used to represent solution operators associated with electromagnetic and acoustic waves inside periodic high contrast media. Convergent power series for the Bloch wave spectrum is recovered from the representation formulas. Explicit conditions on the contrast are found that provide lower bounds on the convergence radius. These conditions are sufficient for the separation of spectral branches of …

Laminar Matroids, Tara Fife, James Oxley May 2017

Laminar Matroids, Tara Fife, James Oxley

Faculty Publications

A laminar family is a collection A of subsets of a set E such that, for any two intersecting sets, one is contained in the other. For a capacity function c on A, let I be {I:|I∩A|≤c(A) for all A∈A}. Then I is the collection of independent sets of a (laminar) matroid on E. We present a method of compacting laminar presentations, characterize the class of laminar matroids by their excluded minors, present a way to construct all laminar matroids using basic operations, and compare the class of laminar matroids to other well-known classes of matroids.

We propose and implement a procedure for enhancing the sensitivity with which one can determine the phase shift experienced by a thermal light beam possessing on average fewer than four photons in passing through an interferometer. Our procedure entails subtracting exactly one (which can be generalized to m) photon from the light field exiting an interferometer containing a phase-shifting element in one of its arms. As a consequence of the process of photon subtraction, the mean photon number and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the resulting light field are increased, leading to an enhancement of the SNR of the interferometric signal …

We describe a directed search for continuous gravitational waves in data from the sixth initial LIGO science run. The target was the nearby globular cluster NGC 6544 at a distance of ≈2.7 kpc. The search covered a broad band of frequencies along with first and second frequency derivatives for a fixed sky position. The search coherently integrated data from the two LIGO interferometers over a time span of 9.2 days using the matched-filtering F-statistic. We found no gravitational-wave signals and set 95% confidence upper limits as stringent as 6.0×10-25 on intrinsic strain and 8.5×10-6 on fiducial ellipticity. These values beat …

We introduce a new relativistic astrophysics code, SpECTRE, that combines a discontinuous Galerkin method with a task-based parallelism model. SpECTRE's goal is to achieve more accurate solutions for challenging relativistic astrophysics problems such as core-collapse supernovae and binary neutron star mergers. The robustness of the discontinuous Galerkin method allows for the use of high-resolution shock capturing methods in regions where (relativistic) shocks are found, while exploiting high-order accuracy in smooth regions. A task-based parallelism model allows efficient use of the largest supercomputers for problems with a heterogeneous workload over disparate spatial and temporal scales. We argue that the locality and …

Parameter estimates of GW150914 were obtained using Bayesian inference, based on three semi-analytic waveform models for binary black hole coalescences. These waveform models differ from each other in their treatment of black hole spins, and all three models make some simplifying assumptions, notably to neglect sub-dominant waveform harmonic modes and orbital eccentricity. Furthermore, while the models are calibrated to agree with waveforms obtained by full numerical solutions of Einstein's equations, any such calibration is accurate only to some non-zero tolerance and is limited by the accuracy of the underlying phenomenology, availability, quality, and parameter-space coverage of numerical simulations. This paper …

T2K reports its first results in the search for CP violation in neutrino oscillations using appearance and disappearance channels for neutrino- and antineutrino-mode beams. The data include all runs from January 2010 to May 2016 and comprise 7.482×1020 protons on target in neutrino mode, which yielded in the far detector 32 e-like and 135 μ-like events, and 7.471×1020 protons on target in antineutrino mode, which yielded 4 e-like and 66 μ-like events. Reactor measurements of sin22θ13 have been used as an additional constraint. The one-dimensional confidence interval at 90% for the phase δCP spans the range (-3.13, -0.39) for normal …

We present the result of searches for gravitational waves from 200 pulsars using data from the first observing run of the Advanced LIGO detectors. We find no significant evidence for a gravitational-wave signal from any of these pulsars, but we are able to set the most constraining upper limits yet on their gravitational-wave amplitudes and ellipticities. For eight of these pulsars, our upper limits give bounds that are improvements over the indirect spin-down limit values. For another 32, we are within a factor of 10 of the spin-down limit, and it is likely that some of these will be reachable …

Estimating A Parametric Component Lifetime Distribution From A Collection Of Superimposed Renewal Processes, Wei Zhang, Ye Tian, Luis A. Escobar, William Q. Meeker

Maintenance data can be used to make inferences about the lifetime distribution of system components. Typically, a fleet contains multiple systems. Within each system, there is a set of nominally identical replaceable components of particular interest (e.g., 2 automobile headlights, 8 dual in-line memory module (DIMM) modules in a computing server, 16 cylinders in a locomotive engine). For each component replacement event, there is system-level information that a component was replaced, but no information on which particular component was replaced. Thus, the observed data are a collection of superpositions of renewal processes (SRP), one for each system in the fleet. …
