Evaluation Of Fitting And Adjustment Methods For Taper And Volume Prediction Of Black Pine In Turkey, Ramazan Özçelik, Quang V. Cao
Evaluation Of Fitting And Adjustment Methods For Taper And Volume Prediction Of Black Pine In Turkey, Ramazan Özçelik, Quang V. Cao
Faculty Publications
A modified form (Cao, Q.V. South. J. Appl. For. 33[2]:58–61, 2009) of the taper model of T.A. Max and H.E. Burkhart (For. Sci. 22[3]:283–289, 1976) was used in this study to predict taper and volume of black pine. A total of 16 methods were evaluated, including 4 fitting methods (optimized for taper, cumulative volume, taper and cumulative volume, and taper and total volume) and 4 adjustment strategies (unadjusted, adjusted to match dbh, predicted total volume, and dbh and predicted total volume). Results showed that adjustment did not improve the performance of the taper model. Also for this data set, the …
Hybrid Recommender Systems With Deep Learning, Fei Li
Hybrid Recommender Systems With Deep Learning, Fei Li
LSU Master's Theses
As one of the most popular recommendation algorithms, collaborative filtering (CF) suggests items favored by like-minded based on user ratings. However, CF performs worse for users and items with fewer ratings, which is known as the cold-start problem. On the other hand, the auxiliary information of items such as images and reviews can be helpful for relieving the cold-start issue and improving recommendation accuracy. How to effectively extract features from heterogeneous auxiliary information and integrate them with collaborative filtering remains a big challenge. In this thesis, we propose a tightly-coupled hybrid recommender system named Fusion-MF-Mix via a deep fusion framework, …

We study the vertical and adiabatic ionization potentials and electron affinities of bare and hydroxylated TiO2 nanoclusters, as well as their fundamental gap and exciton binding energy values, to understand how the clusters' electronic properties change as a function of size and hydroxylation. In addition, we have employed a range of many-body methods; including G0W0, qsGW, EA/IP-EOM-CCSD, and DFT (B3LYP, PBE), to compare the performance and predictions of the different classes of methods. We demonstrate that, for bare clusters, all many-body methods predict the same trend with cluster size. The highest occupied and lowest unoccupied DFT orbitals follow the same …
Earthquake Risks In Haiti: An Analysis Of Response And Preparedness Strategies For The Design Of A New Mitigation Approach, Patrick Alteus
Earthquake Risks In Haiti: An Analysis Of Response And Preparedness Strategies For The Design Of A New Mitigation Approach, Patrick Alteus
LSU Master's Theses
Earthquakes can have enormous consequences on affected countries. To minimize these harsh consequences, an effective disaster management plan is necessary and a reasonable strategy is necessary to recover and get back to a normal life when they happen. Studies from scientists show that it is difficult to predict when an earthquake will occur. Because of this unpredictability, high-risk countries need to act continuously in order to deal with any sudden strike that may occur by stressing on the mitigation and preparedness activities and by designing appropriate response plans. In Haiti, a well-known earthquake-prone country, the preparedness and mitigation plans have …
Nanoparticle-Based Drug-Delivery Systems Studied By Second Harmonic Generation, Raju Ram Kumal
Nanoparticle-Based Drug-Delivery Systems Studied By Second Harmonic Generation, Raju Ram Kumal
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Second harmonic generation (SHG) is used to study different types of colloidal nanoparticle drug-delivery systems. The surface charge density, electrostatic surface potentials, and ion adsorptions of 50 nm colloidal gold nanoparticle samples coated with mercaptosuccinic acid are determined using SHG measurements under varying NaCl and MgCl2 concentrations in water. Numerical solutions to the spherical Poisson-Boltzmann equation are fit to the SHG results to account for the nanoparticle surface curvature and ion adsorption to the Stern layer interface, showing excellent agreement with electrophoretic mobility measurements. In another study, nanoparticles of gold, silver and polystyrene are functionalized with microRNA using a …

Conical Representations For Direct Limits Of Symmetric Spaces, Matthew Dawson, Gestur Ólafsson
Conical Representations For Direct Limits Of Symmetric Spaces, Matthew Dawson, Gestur Ólafsson
Faculty Publications
We extend the definition of conical representations for Riemannian symmetric spaces to a certain class of infinite-dimensional Riemannian symmetric spaces. Using a certain infinite-dimensional version of Weyl’s Unitary Trick, we show that there is a correspondence between smooth representations of infinite-dimensional noncompact-type Riemannian symmetric spaces and smooth representations of infinite-dimensional compact-type symmetric spaces. We classify all smooth conical representations which are unitary on the compact-type side. Finally, a new class of non-smooth unitary conical representations appears on the compact-type side which has no analogue in the finite-dimensional case. We classify these representations and show how to decompose them into direct …
Stabilization And Robustness Analysis For Time-Varying Systems With Time-Varying Delays Using A Sequential Subpredictors Approach, Frédéric Mazenc, Michael Malisoff
Stabilization And Robustness Analysis For Time-Varying Systems With Time-Varying Delays Using A Sequential Subpredictors Approach, Frédéric Mazenc, Michael Malisoff
Faculty Publications
We provide a new sequential predictors approach for the exponential stabilization of linear time-varying systems. Our method circumvents the problem of constructing and estimating distributed terms in the control laws, and allows arbitrarily large input delay bounds, pointwise time-varying input delays, and uncertainties. Instead of using distributed terms, our approach to handling longer delays is to increase the number of predictors. We obtain explicit formulas to find lower bounds for the number of required predictors. The formulas involve bounds on the delays and on the derivatives of the delays. We illustrate our method in three examples.

© 2017 John Wiley & Sons Ltd/CNRS Population cycling is a widespread phenomenon, observed across a multitude of taxa in both laboratory and natural conditions. Historically, the theory associated with population cycles was tightly linked to pairwise consumer–resource interactions and studied via deterministic models, but current empirical and theoretical research reveals a much richer basis for ecological cycles. Stochasticity and seasonality can modulate or create cyclic behaviour in non-intuitive ways, the high-dimensionality in ecological systems can profoundly influence cycling, and so can demographic structure and eco-evolutionary dynamics. An inclusive theory for population cycles, ranging from ecosystem-level to demographic modelling, grounded …

During their first observational run, the two Advanced LIGO detectors attained an unprecedented sensitivity, resulting in the first direct detections of gravitational-wave signals produced by stellar-mass binary black hole systems. This paper reports on an all-sky search for gravitational waves (GWs) from merging intermediate mass black hole binaries (IMBHBs). The combined results from two independent search techniques were used in this study: the first employs a matched-filter algorithm that uses a bank of filters covering the GW signal parameter space, while the second is a generic search for GW transients (bursts). No GWs from IMBHBs were detected; therefore, we constrain …

Information-Theoretic Limitations On Approximate Quantum Cloning And Broadcasting, Marius Lemm, Mark M. Wilde
Faculty Publications
We prove quantitative limitations on any approximate simultaneous cloning or broadcasting of mixed states. The results are based on information-theoretic (entropic) considerations and generalize the well-known no-cloning and no-broadcasting theorems. We also observe and exploit the fact that the universal cloning machine on the symmetric subspace of n qudits and symmetrized partial trace channels are dual to each other. This duality manifests itself both in the algebraic sense of adjointness of quantum channels and in the operational sense that a universal cloning machine can be used as an approximate recovery channel for a symmetrized partial trace channel and vice versa. …

We report on recent developments within the framework of the no-core symplectic shell model (NCSpM) that complements the no-core shell model (Navrátil, Vary, and Barrett) by exploiting the algebraic features of the symplectic shell model (Rowe and Rosensteel) while also allowing for high-performance computing applications, but in highly truncated, physically relevant subspaces of the complete space. The leading symplectic symmetry typically accounts for 70% to 90% of the structure of the low-lying states, a result that is only moderately dependent on the details of the selected inter-nucleon interaction. Examples for6Li,12C,16O, and20Ne are shown to illustrate the efficacy the NCSpM, and …

Dilated Deep Residual Network For Image Denoising, Tianyang Wang, Mingxuan Sun, Kaoning Hu

Variations of deep neural networks such as convolutional neural network (CNN) have been successfully applied to image denoising. The goal is to automatically learn a mapping from a noisy image to a clean image given training data consisting of pairs of noisy and clean images. Most existing CNN models for image denoising have many layers. In such cases, the models involve a large amount of parameters and are computationally expensive to train. In this paper, we develop a dilated residual CNN for Gaussian image denoising. Compared with the recently proposed residual denoiser, our method can achieve comparable performance with less …

We report measurements by the T2K experiment of the parameters θ23 and Δm322 governing the disappearance of muon neutrinos and antineutrinos in the three-flavor neutrino oscillation model. Utilizing the ability of the experiment to run with either a mainly neutrino or a mainly antineutrino beam, the parameters are measured separately for neutrinos and antineutrinos. Using 7.482×1020 POT in neutrino running mode and 7.471×1020 POT in antineutrino mode, T2K obtained sin2(θ23)=0.51-0.07+0.08 and Δm322=2.53-0.13+0.15×10-3 eV2/c4 for neutrinos, and sin2(θ-23)=0.42-0.07+0.25 and Δm-232=2.55-0.27+0.33×10-3 eV2/c4 for antineutrinos (assuming normal mass ordering). No significant differences between the values of the parameters describing the disappearance of muon …

© 2017 John Wiley & Sons Ltd The Ediacaran Doushantuo Formation in South China is a prime target for geobiological investigation because it offers opportunities to integrate chemostratigraphic and paleobiological data. Previous studies were mostly focused on successions in shallow-water shelf facies, but data from deep-water successions are needed to fully understand basinal redox structures. Here, we report δ13Ccarb, δ13Corg, δ34Spyr, δ34SCAS, and δ15Nsed data from a drill core of the fossiliferous Lantian Formation, which is a deep-water equivalent of the Doushantuo Formation. Our data confirm a large (>10‰) spatial gradient in δ13Ccarb in the lower Doushantuo/Lantian formations, but …

Lotka's Inverse Square Law Of Scientific Productivity: Its Methods And Statistics, Stephen J. Bensman, Lawrence J. Smolinsky
Faculty Publications
This brief communication analyzes the statistics and methods Lotka used to derive his inverse square law of scientific productivity from the standpoint of modern theory. It finds that he violated the norms of this theory by extremely truncating his data on the right. It also proves that Lotka himself played an important role in establishing the commonly used method of identifying power-law behavior by the R2 fit to a regression line on a log-log plot that modern theory considers unreliable by basing the derivation of his law on this very method.

Discrete Power Law With Exponential Cutoff And Lotka's Law, Lawrence Smolinsky
Faculty Publications
One of the first bibliometric laws appeared in Alfred J. Lotka's 1926 examination of author productivity in chemistry and physics. The result was a productivity distribution described by a power law. In this paper, Lotka's original data on author productivity in chemistry are reconsidered. We define a discrete power law with exponential cutoff, test Lotka's data, and compare the fit to the discrete power law.

In order to reconstruct environments associated with Plio-Pleistocene hominins in southern Africa, researchers frequently rely upon the animals associated with the hominins, in particular, animals in the Family Bovidae. Bovids in southern Africa are typically identified by their teeth. However, identifying the taxon of a bovid tooth is challenging due to various biasing factors. Furthermore, inaccurate identification of fossil bovids can have significant consequences on the reconstructed paleoenvironment. Recent research on the classification of bovid fossil teeth has relied on using elliptical Fourier analysis to summarize the shape of the outline of the occlusal surface of the tooth and the …

Stability And Robustness Analysis For A Multi-Species Chemostat Model With Uncertainties, Frederic Mazenc, Michael Malisoff, Gonzalo Robledo

We prove stability and robustness results for chemostat models with one substrate, an arbitrary number of species, a constant dilution rate, and constant inputs of the species. Unlike all previous works, we prove input-to-state stability under uncertainties in important cases where the controls are the input nutrient concentration and the species inputs. Our assumptions ensure global asymptotic stability for an equilibrium, which can allow persistence of multiple species, when the uncertainties are zero. We allow arbitrarily large bounds on the uncertainties in the species dynamics, and equilibria that can be in the boundary of the state space.

Dielectric microstructures have generated much interest in recent years as a means of accelerating charged particles when powered by solid state lasers. The acceleration gradient (or particle energy gain per unit length) is an important figure of merit. To design structures with high acceleration gradients, we explore the adjoint variable method, a highly efficient technique used to compute the sensitivity of an objective with respect to a large number of parameters. With this formalism, the sensitivity of the acceleration gradient of a dielectric structure with respect to its entire spatial permittivity distribution is calculated by the use of only two …

Results are presented from a semicoherent search for continuous gravitational waves from the brightest low-mass X-ray binary, Scorpius X-1, using data collected during the first Advanced LIGO observing run. The search combines a frequency domain matched filter (Bessel-weighted F-statistic) with a hidden Markov model to track wandering of the neutron star spin frequency. No evidence of gravitational waves is found in the frequency range 60-650 Hz. Frequentist 95% confidence strain upper limits, h095%=4.0×10-25, 8.3×10-25, and 3.0×10-25 for electromagnetically restricted source orientation, unknown polarization, and circular polarization, respectively, are reported at 106 Hz. They are ≤10 times higher than the theoretical …

Phenology reflects the interplay of climate and biological development. Early spring phenological phenomena are particularly important because the end of diapause or dormancy is related not only to heat accumulation in the early spring but also probably to winter low temperatures. Although a warmer winter can reduce overwintering mortality in many insects and plants, it also reduces the accumulation of chilling time that often triggers the end of diapause or dormancy. We examined a continuous 67-year time series of the first flowering date of cherry trees and compared three phenological models based on the temperature-dependent developmental rate: (i) the accumulated …

We report a multi-resolution search for anisotropies in the arrival directions of cosmic rays detected at the Pierre Auger Observatory with local zenith angles up to 80° and energies in excess of 4 EeV (4 × 1018 eV). This search is conducted by measuring the angular power spectrum and performing a needlet wavelet analysis in two independent energy ranges. Both analyses are complementary since the angular power spectrum achieves a better performance in identifying large-scale patterns while the needlet wavelet analysis, considering the parameters used in this work, presents a higher efficiency in detecting smaller-scale anisotropies, potentially providing directional information …

A class of extensions of the Standard Model allows Lorentz and CPT violations, which can be identified by the observation of sidereal modulations in the neutrino interaction rate. A search for such modulations was performed using the T2K on-axis near detector. Two complementary methods were used in this study, both of which resulted in no evidence of a signal. Limits on associated Lorentz and CPT-violating terms from the Standard Model extension have been derived by taking into account their correlations in this model for the first time. These results imply such symmetry violations are suppressed by a factor of more …

We present the results of the search for gravitational waves (GWs) associated with γ-ray bursts detected during the first observing run of the Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO). We find no evidence of a GW signal for any of the 41 γ-ray bursts for which LIGO data are available with sufficient duration. For all γ-ray bursts, we place lower bounds on the distance to the source using the optimistic assumption that GWs with an energy of were emitted within the-Hz band, and we find a median 90% confidence limit of 71 Mpc at 150 Hz. For the subset of …
