Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity, first published a century ago, was described by physicist Max Born as "the greatest feat of human thinking about nature."We report on two major scientific breakthroughs involving key predictions of Einstein's theory: the first direct detection of gravitational waves and the first observation of the collision and merger of a pair of black holes. This cataclysmic event, producing the gravitational-wave signal GW150914, took place in a distant galaxy more than one billion light years from the Earth. It was observed on September 14, 2015 by the two detectors of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory …

Can Functional Traits Account For Phylogenetic Signal In Community Composition?, Daijiang Li, Anthony R. Ives, Donald M. Waller

© 2017 The Authors. New Phytologist © 2017 New Phytologist Trust Phylogenetic and functional trait-based analyses inform our understanding of community composition, yet methods for quantifying the overlap in information derived from functional traits and phylogenies remain underdeveloped. Does adding traits to analyses of community composition reduce the phylogenetic signal in the residual variation? If not, then measured functional traits alone may be insufficient to explain community assembly. We propose a general statistical framework to quantify the proportion of phylogenetic pattern in community composition that remains after including measured functional traits. We then illustrate the framework with applications to two …

Towards A Splitter Theorem For Internally 4-Connected Binary Matroids Viii: Small Matroids, Carolyn Chun, Dillon Mayhew, James Oxley
Faculty Publications
Our splitter theorem studies pairs of the form (M,N), where M and N are internally 4-connected binary matroids, M has a proper N-minor, and if M' is an internally 4-connected matroid such that M has a proper M'-minor and M' has an N-minor, then |E(M)|−|E(M')|>3. The analysis in the splitter theorem requires the constraint |E(M)|≥16. In this article, we complement that analysis by describing all such pairs for which |E(M)|≤15.
A Generalization Of The Banach-Steinhaus Theorem For Finite Part Limits, Ricardo Estrada, Jasson Vindas
A Generalization Of The Banach-Steinhaus Theorem For Finite Part Limits, Ricardo Estrada, Jasson Vindas
Faculty Publications
It is well known, as follows from the Banach-Steinhaus theorem, that if a sequence {yn}n=1∞ of linear continuous functionals in a Fréchet space converges pointwise to a linear functional Y, Y(x) = lim n → ∞〈yn, x〉 for all x, then Y is actually continuous. In this article, we prove that in a Fréchet space the continuity of Y still holds if Y is the finite part of the limit of 〈yn, x〉 as n→ ∞. We also show that the continuity of finite part limits holds for other classes of topological vector spaces, such as LF-spaces, DFS-spaces, and DFS∗-spaces …

Extensions Of Razumikhin's Theorem And Lyapunov–Krasovskii Functional Constructions For Time-Varying Systems With Delay, Frédéric Mazenc, Michael Malisoff
Faculty Publications
We prove extensions of Razumikhin's theorem for time-varying continuous and discrete time nonlinear systems. Our results include a novel ‘strictification’ technique for converting a nonstrict Lyapunov function into a strict one. We also provide new constructions of Lyapunov–Krasovskii functionals that can be used to prove robustness to perturbations. Our examples include a key model from identification theory, and they show how our method can sometimes allow broader classes of delays than the results in the literature.

Stabilization In A Chemostat With Sampled And Delayed Measurements And Uncertain Growth Functions, Frédéric Mazenc, Jérome Harmand, Michael Malisoff
Faculty Publications
We provide a new control design for chemostats, under constant substrate input concentrations, using piecewise constant delayed measurements of the substrate concentration. Our growth functions can be uncertain and are not necessarily monotone. The dilution rate is the control. We use a new Lyapunov approach to derive conditions on the largest sampling interval and on the delay length to ensure asymptotic stabilization properties of a componentwise positive equilibrium point.

Fermionic Modular Categories And The 16-Fold Way, Paul Bruillard, César Galindo, Tobias Hagge, Siu Hung Ng, Julia Yael Plavnik, Eric C. Rowell, Zhenghan Wang

We study spin and super-modular categories systematically as inspired by fermionic topological phases of matter, which are always fermion parity enriched and modelled by spin topological quantum field theories at low energy. We formulate a 16-fold way conjecture for the minimal modular extensions of super-modular categories to spin modular categories, which is a categorical formulation of gauging the fermion parity. We investigate general properties of super-modular categories such as fermions in twisted Drinfeld doubles, Verlinde formulas for naive quotients, and explicit extensions of PSU(2)4m+2 with an eye towards a classification of the low-rank cases.
Cluster Detection Of Spatial Regression Coefficients, Junho Lee, Ronald E. Gangnon, Jun Zhu
Cluster Detection Of Spatial Regression Coefficients, Junho Lee, Ronald E. Gangnon, Jun Zhu
Faculty Publications
Popular approaches to spatial cluster detection, such as the spatial scan statistic, are defined in terms of the responses. Here, we consider a varying-coefficient regression and spatial clusters in the regression coefficients. For varying-coefficient regression, such as the geographically weighted regression, different regression coefficients are obtained for different spatial units. It is often of interest to the practitioners to identify clusters of spatial units with distinct patterns in a regression coefficient, but there is no formal statistical methodology for that. Rather, cluster identification is often ad-hoc such as by eyeballing the map of fitted regression coefficients and discerning patterns. In …

In Advanced LIGO, detection and astrophysical source parameter estimation of the binary black hole merger GW150914 requires a calibrated estimate of the gravitational-wave strain sensed by the detectors. Producing an estimate from each detector's differential arm length control loop readout signals requires applying time domain filters, which are designed from a frequency domain model of the detector's gravitational-wave response. The gravitational-wave response model is determined by the detector's opto-mechanical response and the properties of its feedback control system. The measurements used to validate the model and characterize its uncertainty are derived primarily from a dedicated photon radiation pressure actuator, with …

Stability And Robustness Analysis For Human Pointing Motions With Acceleration Under Feedback Delays, Paul Varnell, Michael Malisoff, Fumin Zhang

Pointer acceleration is often used in computer mice and other interfaces to increase the range and speed of pointing motions without sacrificing precision during slow movements. However, the effects of pointer acceleration are not yet well understood. We use a system perspective and feedback control to analyze the effects of pointer acceleration. We use a new pointer acceleration model connected in feedback with the vector integration to endpoint model for pointing motions. When there are no feedback delays, we prove global asymptotic stability of the closed loop system for a general class of acceleration profiles. We also prove robustness under …

A wide variety of astrophysical and cosmological sources are expected to contribute to a stochastic gravitational-wave background. Following the observations of GW150914 and GW151226, the rate and mass of coalescing binary black holes appear to be greater than many previous expectations. As a result, the stochastic background from unresolved compact binary coalescences is expected to be particularly loud. We perform a search for the isotropic stochastic gravitational-wave background using data from Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory's (aLIGO) first observing run. The data display no evidence of a stochastic gravitational-wave signal. We constrain the dimensionless energy density of gravitational waves …

We employ gravitational-wave radiometry to map the stochastic gravitational wave background expected from a variety of contributing mechanisms and test the assumption of isotropy using data from the Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory's (aLIGO) first observing run. We also search for persistent gravitational waves from point sources with only minimal assumptions over the 20-1726 Hz frequency band. Finding no evidence of gravitational waves from either point sources or a stochastic background, we set limits at 90% confidence. For broadband point sources, we report upper limits on the gravitational wave energy flux per unit frequency in the range Fα,Θ(f)<(0.1-56)×10-8 erg cm-2 s-1 Hz-1(f/25 Hz)α-1 depending on the sky location Θ and the spectral power index α. For extended sources, we report upper limits on the fractional gravitational wave energy density required to close the Universe of Ω(f,Θ)<(0.39-7.6)×10-8 sr-1(f/25 Hz)α depending on Θ and α. Directed searches for narrowband gravitational waves from astrophysically interesting objects (Scorpius X-1, Supernova 1987 A, and the Galactic Center) yield median frequency-dependent limits on strain amplitude of h0<(6.7,5.5, and 7.0)×10-25, respectively, at the most sensitive detector frequencies between 130-175 Hz. This represents a mean improvement of a factor of 2 across the band compared to previous searches of this kind for these sky locations, considering the different quantities of strain constrained in each case.

The source-free Maxwell action is invariant under electric-magnetic duality rotations in arbitrary spacetimes. This leads to a conserved classical Noether charge. We show that this conservation law is broken at the quantum level in the presence of a background classical gravitational field with a nontrivial Chern-Pontryagin invariant, in parallel with the chiral anomaly for massless Dirac fermions. Among the physical consequences, the net polarization of the quantum electromagnetic field is not conserved.
Cosmological Dynamics In Spin-Foam Loop Quantum Cosmology: Challenges And Prospects, David A. Craig, Parampreet Singh
Cosmological Dynamics In Spin-Foam Loop Quantum Cosmology: Challenges And Prospects, David A. Craig, Parampreet Singh

We explore the structure of the spin foam-like vertex expansion in loop quantum cosmology and discuss properties of the corresponding amplitudes, with the aim of elucidating some of the expansion's useful properties and features. We find that the expansion is best suited for consideration of conceptual questions and for investigating short-time, highly quantum behavior. In order to study dynamics at cosmological scales, the expansion must be carried to very high order, limiting its direct utility as a calculational tool for such questions. Conversely, it is unclear that the expansion can be truncated at finite order in a controlled manner.

The goal of this paper is to probe phenomenological implications of large fluctuations of quantum geometry in the Planck era, using cosmology of the early universe. For the background (Friedmann, Lemaître, Robertson, Walker) quantum geometry, we allow 'widely spread' states in which the relative dispersions are as large as in the Planck regime. By introducing suitable methods to overcome the ensuing conceptual and computational issues, we calculate the power spectrum and the spectral index n s(k) of primordial curvature perturbations. These results generalize the previous work in loop quantum cosmology which focused on those states which were known to remain …

AMIGA (Auger Muons and Infill for the Ground Array) is an upgrade of the Pierre Auger Observatory designed to extend its energy range of detection and to directly measure the muon content of the cosmic ray primary particle showers. The array will be formed by an infill of surface water-Cherenkov detectors associated with buried scintillation counters employed for muon counting. Each counter is composed of three scintillation modules, with a 10 m2 detection area per module. In this paper, a new generation of detectors, replacing the current multi-pixel photomultiplier tube (PMT) with silicon photo sensors (aka. SiPMs), is proposed. The …

Proposed models of closed timelike curves (CTCs) have been shown to enable powerful information-processing protocols. We examine the simulation of models of CTCs both by other models of CTCs and by physical systems without access to CTCs. We prove that the recently proposed transition probability CTCs (T-CTCs) are physically equivalent to postselection CTCs (P-CTCs), in the sense that one model can simulate the other with reasonable overhead. As a consequence, their information-processing capabilities are equivalent. We also describe a method for quantum computers to simulate Deutschian CTCs (but with a reasonable overhead only in some cases). In cases for which …

Along with weaving together observations, experiments, and theoretical constructs into a coherent mesh of understanding of the world around us, physics over its past five centuries has continuously refined the base concepts on which the whole framework is built. In quantum physics, first in nonrelativistic mechanics and later in quantum field theories, even familiar concepts of position, momentum, wave, or particle, are derived constructs from the classical limit in which we live but not intrinsic to the underlying physics. Most crucially, the very idea of the individual, whether an object or an event, distinguished only in a mere label of …
