Let C be an open cone in a Banach space equipped with the Thompson metric with closure a normal cone. The main result gives sufficient conditions for Borel probability measures μ,ν on C with finite first moment for which μ≤ν in the stochastic order induced by the cone to be order approximated by sequences {μn}, {νn} of uniform finitely supported measures in the sense that μn≤νn for each n and μn→μ, νn→ν in the Wasserstein metric. This result is the crucial tool in developing a pathway for extending various inequalities on operator and matrix means, which include the harmonic, geometric, …

Three-Dimensional Quasi-Periodic Shifted Green Function Throughout The Spectrum, Including Wood Anomalies, Oscar P. Bruno, Stephen P. Shipman, Catalin Turc, Stephanos Venakides
Faculty Publications
This work, part II in a series, presents an efficient method for evaluation of wave scattering by doubly periodic diffraction gratings at or near what are commonly called ‘Wood anomaly frequencies’. At these frequencies, there is a grazing Rayleigh wave, and the quasi-periodic Green function ceases to exist. We present a modification of the Green function by adding two types of terms to its lattice sum. The first type are transversely shifted Green functions with coefficients that annihilate the growth in the original lattice sum and yield algebraic convergence. The second type are quasi-periodic plane wave solutions of the Helmholtz …

Semi-Discrete Error Estimates And Implementation Of A Mixed Method For The Stefan Problem, Ch B. Davis, Sh W. Walker
Faculty Publications
We analyze a dual formulation and finite element method for simulating the Stefan problem with surface tension (originally presented in [C.B. Davis and S.W. Walker, Int. Free Bound. 17 (2015) 427-464]). The method uses a mixed form of the heat equation in the solid and liquid (bulk) domains, and imposes a weak formulation of the interface motion law (on the solid-liquid interface) as a constraint. The computational method uses a conforming mesh approach to accurately capture the jump conditions across the interface. Preliminary error estimates are derived, under reduced regularity assumptions, for the difference between the time semi-discrete solution and …

Assessing Morphodynamics Of The Lower Mississippi River From 1985 To 2015 With Remote Sensing And Gis Techniques, Bo Wang
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The Lower Mississippi River is one of the most highly engineered rivers in the world. The river is now completely regulated by a combination of levees, artificial cutoffs, bank revetments, and dike fields; however, the river engineering has also complicated the geomorphological response to the sediment brought in the river. This dissertation research examined morphodynamics of the middle portion of the Lower Mississippi River from Vicksburg, Mississippi (river kilometer: 737) to Red River Landing, Louisiana (river kilometer: 486) to elucidate river engineering effects on sediment transport, storage, and distribution. The Old River Control Structure (ORCS) diverts approximately 25% of the …

Statistical And Technical Methodologies For Duplicated Multiple-Samples Preference And Attribute Intensity Sensory Ranking Test, Kennet Mariano Carabante Ordonez
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Ranking tests are important preference and attribute difference tools for sensory evaluation. Replicated testing is used widely to reduce the number of panelists required in other sensory methods such as discrimination. The information regarding replications sensory ranking is limited. This research evaluated important statistical and technical aspects for the development of the foundation for duplicated sensory ranking tests. Three studies were accomplished: 1) A study of nonparametric analyses on real preference ranked data; 2) a sensitivity study of two samples serving protocols for duplicated visual ranking, and 3) protocols comparison in taste. In study 1, 125 panelists ranked in duplicates …

Overbank Deposition Of Sand And Mud Within Two Point Bars Bound By The Mississippi River Levee System: Implications For Coastal Restoration Sediment Budgets, Christopher Magliolo
LSU Master's Theses
As ongoing Mississippi River sediment diversion projects are being developed and planned, the availability of sand and mud for use in the lower Mississippi River Delta is being calculated and budgeted. This project attempts to quantify the amount of sand and mud being lost from the lower Mississippi River past the Old River Control Structure in the remaining unleveed floodplains, an area that encompasses 270 km2. Two land masses were chosen along each bank of this reach of the Mississippi River: Raccourci Island (west bank) and the Cat Island National Wildlife Refuge (east bank). Seventeen sediment cores were …
Application Of Surface Treatments To Improve Fuel Efficiency Of Internal Combustion Engines, Amirabbas Akbarzadeh
Application Of Surface Treatments To Improve Fuel Efficiency Of Internal Combustion Engines, Amirabbas Akbarzadeh
LSU Master's Theses
To improve the tribological performance of contacting surfaces, different surface modification methods can be employed. Surface texturing and surface coating are examples of viable techniques developed for this purpose. Surface texturing involves creating micropatterns on the contacting surfaces while surface coating requires depositing a thin layer of a suitable material on the surface(s) to improve the component’s friction and wear characteristics. The performance of textured surfaces is affected by the geometric characteristic of textures. When dealing with surface coating parameters, the parameters of interests are the type of coating materials and their thicknesses.
The current study aims to experimentally study the …

This dissertation focuses on two main projects, global chlorination and enamide functionalization, which both encompass in cationic intermediates. Inspired by the desires to find a new chlorination method, global chlorination project is emphasized in chapter one and chapter two, in which chapter one details various known chlorine-containing natural products, including alkyl chlorides and vinyl chlorides. This chapter also describes the previously known protocols to synthesize alkyl chlorides in the attempts of chlorosulfolipids total syntheses, as well as several known reactions to synthesize vinyl chlorides that are both important functional groups in organic synthesis. Chapter two depicts our novel synthetic reaction …
Assessing The Impact Of White Noise On Cognition In Individuals With And Without Adhd, Scott Roye
Assessing The Impact Of White Noise On Cognition In Individuals With And Without Adhd, Scott Roye
LSU Master's Theses
Although originally viewed only as a childhood disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is now recognized to persist into adulthood in many individuals. Adults with ADHD often demonstrate academic, cognitive, and general functioning deficits as a result of their symptoms. Theorists have suggested that features typically associated with ADHD, such as distractibility, excessive motor activity, and executive dysfunction, may stem from being under stimulated at a physiological level. This lack of arousal potentially causes individuals to seek out stimulation, making them more susceptible to background noise and other environmental stimuli. However, previous research primarily focuses on children and adolescents with …
Relative Entropy Of Steering: On Its Definition And Properties, Eneet Kaur, Mark M. Wilde
Relative Entropy Of Steering: On Its Definition And Properties, Eneet Kaur, Mark M. Wilde
Faculty Publications
In Gallego and Aolita (2015 Phys. Rev. X 5 041008), the authors proposed a definition for the relative entropy of steering and showed that the resulting quantity is a convex steering monotone. Here we advocate for a different definition for relative entropy of steering, based on well grounded concerns coming from quantum Shannon theory. We prove that this modified relative entropy of steering is a convex steering monotone. Furthermore, we establish that it is uniformly continuous and faithful, in both cases giving quantitative bounds that should be useful in applications. We also consider a restricted relative entropy of steering which …

Studying The Reaction 34ar(Alpha,P)37k And Its Impact On Xrb Nucleosynthesis And Observables, Amber C. Lauer
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Type I X-Ray bursts (XRB’s) are a site of nucleosynthesis for some proton-rich elements up to A=100. These stellar explosions occur on the surface of a neutron star in a Low- Mass X-ray Binary accreting H- and He-rich material. During accretion nuclear burning occurs through stable processes such as the hot CNO (HCNO) cycles, but at some critical accretion condition the the HCNO cycles are bypassed through a breakout reaction. This triggers the thermonuclear runaway of the XRB. During the burst, nucleosynthesis on certain proton-rich nuclei, called (α, p) waiting points, can stall which could stall the energy generation and …

Common Core State Standards And Text Complexity: An Invitation To Learn Language In Stem Disciplines Using A Range Of Quality Literature, Rebecca M. Giles, Leah Kinniburgh
The Journal of Balanced Literacy Research and Instruction
The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) emphasize literacy learning within history/social studies, science, and technical subjects making students’ reading, writing, and language development every teacher’s concern, regardless of the discipline being taught. Books related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) can enhance students’ knowledge of key terms and concepts as they are revealed in authentic contexts. Students who often struggle harder to understand advanced vocabulary embedded in stories or in difficult, yet interestingly presented nonfiction gain an increased print vocabulary by reading quality STEM-aligned literature selections that exhibit the characteristics of complexity and richness of language advocated by CCSS. …

Hierarchical Fusion Based Deep Learning Framework For Lung Nodule Classification, Kazim Sekeroglu
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Lung cancer is the leading cancer type that causes the mortality in both men and women. Computer aided detection (CAD) and diagnosis systems can play a very important role for helping the physicians in cancer treatments. This dissertation proposes a CAD framework that utilizes a hierarchical fusion based deep learning model for detection of nodules from the stacks of 2D images. In the proposed hierarchical approach, a decision is made at each level individually employing the decisions from the previous level. Further, individual decisions are computed for several perspectives of a volume of interest (VOI). This study explores three different …

Unconstrained Capacities Of Quantum Key Distribution And Entanglement Distillation For Pure-Loss Bosonic Broadcast Channels, Masahiro Takeoka, Kaushik P. Seshadreesan, Mark M. Wilde
Faculty Publications
We consider quantum key distribution (QKD) and entanglement distribution using a single-sender multiple-receiver pure-loss bosonic broadcast channel. We determine the unconstrained capacity region for the distillation of bipartite entanglement and secret key between the sender and each receiver, whenever they are allowed arbitrary public classical communication. A practical implication of our result is that the capacity region demonstrated drastically improves upon rates achievable using a naive time-sharing strategy, which has been employed in previously demonstrated network QKD systems. We show a simple example of a broadcast QKD protocol overcoming the limit of the point-to-point strategy. Our result is thus an …
Non-Centrosymmetric Superconductivity And Magnetism In The Presence Of Broken Symmetries, Mojammel Alam Khan
Non-Centrosymmetric Superconductivity And Magnetism In The Presence Of Broken Symmetries, Mojammel Alam Khan
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Non-centrosymmetric (NC) superconducting and magnetic compounds have been synthesized and investigated using magnetic, specific heat, and transport measurements, as well as by neutron scattering and quantum oscillations. The crystal structures of NC compounds are defined by the lack of an inversion center. In NC superconductors, a finite antisymmetric spin orbit coupling originating from broken inversion symmetry results in unconventional Cooper pairing. Instead of a single spin channel, the order parameter is a mixture of spin-singlet and spin-triplet states. For NC magnetic compounds, the antisymmetric and isotropic spin interactions compete, leading to a helical ground state.
We have studied the NC …
Hadamard Quantum Broadcast Channels, Qingle Wang, Siddhartha Das, Mark M. Wilde
Hadamard Quantum Broadcast Channels, Qingle Wang, Siddhartha Das, Mark M. Wilde
Faculty Publications
We consider three different communication tasks for quantum broadcast channels, and we determine the capacity region of a Hadamard broadcast channel for these various tasks. We define a Hadamard broadcast channel to be such that the channel from the sender to one of the receivers is entanglement-breaking and the channel from the sender to the other receiver is complementary to this one. As such, this channel is a quantum generalization of a degraded broadcast channel, which is well known in classical information theory. The first communication task we consider is classical communication to both receivers, the second is quantum communication …

An in-situ calibration of a logarithmic periodic dipole antenna with a frequency coverage of 30MHz to 80MHz is performed. Such antennas are part of a radio station system used for detection of cosmic ray induced air showers at the Engineering Radio Array of the Pierre Auger Observatory, the so-called Auger Engineering Radio Array (AERA). The directional and frequency characteristics of the broadband antenna are investigated using a remotely piloted aircraft carrying a small transmitting antenna. The antenna sensitivity is described by the vector effective length relating the measured voltage with the electric-field components perpendicular to the incoming signal direction. The …

We complete the construction of the modular generalized Springer correspondence for an arbitrary connected reductive group, with a uniform proof of the disjointness of induction series that avoids the case-by-case arguments for classical groups used in previous papers in the series. We show that the induction series containing the trivial local system on the regular nilpotent orbit is determined by the Sylow subgroups of the Weyl group. Under some assumptions, we give an algorithm for determining the induction series associated to the minimal cuspidal datum with a given central character. We also provide tables and other information on the modular …

The dimming rate for the entire period reported is 22.1 ±9.7 mmag yr-1 in the Swift wavebands, with amounts of 21.0 ±4.5 mmag in the ground-based B measurements, 14.0 ±4.5 mmag in V, and 13.0 ±4.5 in R, and a rate of …
The Effect Of A Crosslinking Chemical Reaction On Pattern Formation In Viscous Fingering Of Miscible Fluids In A Hele-Shaw Cell, Patrick H. Bunton, Michael P. Tullier, Eckart Meiburg, John A. Pojman
The Effect Of A Crosslinking Chemical Reaction On Pattern Formation In Viscous Fingering Of Miscible Fluids In A Hele-Shaw Cell, Patrick H. Bunton, Michael P. Tullier, Eckart Meiburg, John A. Pojman
Faculty Publications
Viscous fingering can occur in fluid motion whenever a high mobility fluid displaces a low mobility fluid in a Darcy type flow. When the mobility difference is primarily attributable to viscosity (e.g., flow between the two horizontal plates of a Hele-Shaw cell), viscous fingering (VF) occurs, which is sometimes termed the Saffman-Taylor instability. Alternatively, in the presence of differences in density in a gravity field, buoyancy-driven convection can occur. These instabilities have been studied for decades, in part because of their many applications in pollutant dispersal, ocean currents, enhanced petroleum recovery, and so on. More recent interest has emerged regarding …

Energy-Constrained Quantum Communication And Digital Dynamical Decoupling, Haoyu Qi
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This is a two-part thesis glued together by an everlasting theme in Quantum Information Science \-- to save the quantum state, or the information stored in it, from unavoidably environment-induced noise. The first part of this thesis studies the ultimate rate of reliably transmitting information, stored in quantum systems, through a noisy evolution. Specifically, we consider communication over optical links, upon which future inter-city quantum communication networks will be built. We show how to treat the infinite-dimensional bosonic system rigorously and establish the theory of energy-constrained private and quantum communication over quantum channels. Our result represents important progress in the …
