Oral And Written Linguistic Indices Of Deception During Employment Interviews., Kittie Wells Watson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study was designed to find preliminary information concerning differences between oral and written linguistic indices of deception during employment interviews. It was predicted that: (1) oral messages would be characterized by significantly different linguistic indices than written messages, (2) truthful messages would be characterized by significantly different linguistic indices than deceptive messages, (3) male responses would be characterized by significantly different linguistic indices than female responses, and (4) individual question responses would be characterized by significantly different linguistic indices than other individual question responses. 31 male and 42 female students enrolled in undergraduate business and professional communication courses participated …

A Validity Study Of The Construct "Most Highly Valued Representational System" In Human Auditory And Visual Perceptions., David E. Lange Jan 1980

A Validity Study Of The Construct "Most Highly Valued Representational System" In Human Auditory And Visual Perceptions., David E. Lange

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Bandler and Grinder (1975) proposed the construct "most highly valued representational systems" to describe auditory, visual, and kinesthetic perceptual orientations among individuals. They set forth a predicate method for determining an individual's primary representational system. Contrary to Bandler and Grinder's construct, experimental evidence consistently supports the principle of visual dominance among humans. In order to test the effectiveness of Bandler and Grinder's constructs, 221 volunteers were screened by an alternate predicate method. 22 subjects were selected as "highly auditory" and 19 subjects were selected as "highly visual." These 41 subjects were asked to give their first impressions to 75 simultaneous, …

The …

Sex Typed Language., Margaret Estes Johnson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between psychological sex typing and patterns of language usage. Seventy-nine Louisiana State University undergraduate students were categorized according to the Personal Attributes Questionnaire (Spence, Helmreich and Stapp, 1975). Sex type groups included: psychologically androgynous (High Masculine/High Feminine); masculine (High Masculine/Low Feminine); feminine (Low Masculine/High Feminine); and undifferentiated (Low Masculine/Low Feminine), for both male (n = 40) and female (n = 39). Three written language samples were gathered for each subject. Subjects were asked to spend ten minutes writing in response to each of the three verbal stimuli. Two of the …

A Study Of Reading Achievement In Terms Of Various Background Factors., Dorothy Ellis Carlson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study was designed to evaluate reading achievement in terms of treatment, (direct concept teaching) and non-treatment, controlling for socioeconomic group, preschool attendance and the level of maternal education. The study population was composed of 117 children in six kindergarten classes in six schools in East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana. Two schools were chosen at each socioeconomic level to allow for a treatment school and a control school. One class was used at each school. Schools representing the low, middle and high levels were determined by the percentage of children receiving free lunch at the school. Schools classified as high …

An Empirical Analysis Of Brain Damage And Minimal Brain Dysfunction In School Age Children., Gregory Blaine Sisk Jan 1980

An Empirical Analysis Of Brain Damage And Minimal Brain Dysfunction In School Age Children., Gregory Blaine Sisk

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Minimal brain dysfunction (MBD) in children is described in terms of diagnosis, symptomatology, etiology, prevalence, and prognosis. The MBD area is reviewed with reference to brain damage (BD), non-BD, and empirical models of classfication. A rationale is developed for empirically derived categories of MBD using (a) a comprehensive assessment battery, (b) the administration of this battery to BD, MBD, and normal children, (c) a factor analysis of the children's scores on the test variables, and (d) a cluster analysis of all the children based on the similarity of their factor score profiles. In addition, a canonical correlation between early life-history …

Language Behavior Of Preschool-Age Stutterers: A Longitudinal Study., Thomas Ashley Crowe

Language and fluency measures were performed on the four subjects over five sampling sessions for each subject, for a maximum period of 19 months. Language measures completed at each sampling session included the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT) (Dunn, 1965); the Northwestern Syntax Screening Test (NSST) (Lee, 1969); the Test of Auditory Comprehension of Language (TACL) (Carrow, 1971); the Carrow Elicited Language Inventory (CELI) (Carrow, 1973); and the Developmental Sentence Scoring Techinque (DSS) (Lee, 1974). Speechwriting In Rhetorical Criticism: An Extension Of Theory As Applied To The Johnson Administration., Suzanne Elizabeth Condray Jan 1980

Speechwriting In Rhetorical Criticism: An Extension Of Theory As Applied To The Johnson Administration., Suzanne Elizabeth Condray

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Speechwriting practices have long been associated with rhetorical history. American presidents have employed the speechwriter's assistance since the beginning of this nation. From the dawn of radio, presidential speechwriting practices have grown to the extent that most presidents rely heavily on the writer to prepare the bulk of their messages. While many political speakers have grown to depend on the speechwriter to assist him in preparing the ideas or language of his message, rhetorical critics have largely ignored the writer's influence on the message and his impact on the preparation process. The purpose of this study is fourfold. First of …
