The Impact Of The American Presence On Germans And German-American Grass Roots Relations In Germany, 1950-1960., Dewey Arthur Browder Jan 1987

The Impact Of The American Presence On Germans And German-American Grass Roots Relations In Germany, 1950-1960., Dewey Arthur Browder

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study is primarily concerned with the years 1950-1960, but the period 1945-1949 is also addressed, because many of the policies and institutions introduced to democratize Germany immediately after World War II were carried forward. The official position on both sides during the 1950s was that cooperation was of the essence. In the beginning, the Americans believed that the virtues of democracy could best be cultivated in the German consciousness if the Germans themselves implemented democratic programs under broad, philosophical guidelines, while simultaneously observing Americans and American ideas in practice. This study points out that the Germans accepted the guidelines …

Applications Of Syntax And Pragmatics To Research In Writing., Kathryn Louise Riley Jan 1987

Applications Of Syntax And Pragmatics To Research In Writing., Kathryn Louise Riley

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Researchers in writing have expressed disillusionment with transformational-generative syntax over the past decade. Such disillusionment is caused partly by the different research goals and assumptions about language held by researchers in syntax and those in writing, and partly by unrealistic expectations about the pedagogical usefulness of syntactic theory. However, rather than abandoning the study of linguistics, writing specialists may benefit by reexamining the relation between their field and that of linguistics. First, researchers in writing should distinguish more clearly between applied research and pedagogy. Syntactic theory can be used to explain and analyze certain structural phenomena in student writing, even …

The Management Of Dying: Tasks And Social Relationships In Patient Care., Jeffrey Michael Clair Jan 1987

The Management Of Dying: Tasks And Social Relationships In Patient Care., Jeffrey Michael Clair

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A grounded theory approach guides the interpretation of observational, semi-structured interviews, content analysis, and taped discourse data collected from a 48 bed oncology unit with 288 study patients. Data are presented to explicate generated concepts of regressive intervention and the dying role. Data indicate that when physicians no longer perceive their goals of cure achievable, they distance themselves from patients. Physicians use certain devices to facilitate this gradual or abrupt, but purposeful, withdrawal from patients' curative regimens. These devices are specified in discourse transcripts as use of the medical record, silence, and alternative interactions (family members). Physician-authority, cautious optimistic conversational …

A Study Of Experiences Provided In The Home Environment Associated With Accelerated Reading Abilities As Reported By Parents Of Intellectually Superior Preschoolers., Jeanne Marie Laporte Burns Jan 1986

A Study Of Experiences Provided In The Home Environment Associated With Accelerated Reading Abilities As Reported By Parents Of Intellectually Superior Preschoolers., Jeanne Marie Laporte Burns

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to look beyond the general effect that intelligence and environment have upon the development of reading and investigate (a) differences in how accelerated readers and nonreaders perform on written language tasks and (b) differences in written language experiences provided in the home environment, as reported by parents, associated with the development of accelerated reading abilities. Due to the broadness of the term written language, only four aspects of written language were examined (i.e., awareness of concepts about print, awareness of print in the environment, awareness of letter/sound correspondences in words--invented spelling, and awareness during …

Effects Of Prereading Vocabulary Strategies On Vocabulary And Comprehension Of Basal Stories By Primary Children., Dana G. Thames Jan 1986

Effects Of Prereading Vocabulary Strategies On Vocabulary And Comprehension Of Basal Stories By Primary Children., Dana G. Thames

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study focused on the instructional use of three prereading vocabulary strategies, Directed Reading Activity, Reconciled Reading Lesson and List-Group-Label, as a means for improving vocabulary and comprehension of basal reader stories. Subjects were 66 average and above-average second-grade students. Data were collected over a seven-day period with instruction and post-testing occurring on alternating days. Data were analyzed in three ways. First, a repeated measures analysis of variance on the pre- and post-test vocabulary scores indicated that statistically significant amounts of learning took place within each instructional group. Second, an analysis of variance was used to assess the effects of …

Stories And Storytelling In The "Libro De Buen Amor": Juan Ruiz's Use Of Folktales To Admonish, Persuade And Deceive (Spain)., Cynthia Powell Jayne Jan 1986

Stories And Storytelling In The "Libro De Buen Amor": Juan Ruiz's Use Of Folktales To Admonish, Persuade And Deceive (Spain)., Cynthia Powell Jayne

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Libro de buen amor, a fourteenth century Spanish text by Juan Ruiz, is an extensive and complex poem rich in partially hidden messages. Thirty-five popular medieval tales form an integral part of the body of the work, and convey important information to the reader through the text of the tales and through the storytelling context created by the author. Scholars have studied the tales most often from an historical perspective, and analyzed them separately from the central narrative; or have studied the textual materials with little emphasis on the function of the tales. Although such studies provide valuable information, …

The Christian Preacher As Poet: A Method For Exposition Of Narrative Portions Of Scripture Based On Aristotle's "Poetics"., William Sherman Phillips Jr Jan 1986

The Christian Preacher As Poet: A Method For Exposition Of Narrative Portions Of Scripture Based On Aristotle's "Poetics"., William Sherman Phillips Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

It is the thesis of this study that Aristotle's Poetics provides the basis for a method of exposition that is "distinctively appropriate" for preaching upon the narrative portions of Scripture. The relationship between Aristotelian poetics and narrative exposition of Scripture is examined in terms of the following two questions: (1) How does Aristotelian poetics meet the expository or interpretive need for narrative exposition of Scripture? (2) How does Aristotelian poetics meet the exhortatory or applicative need for narrative exposition of Scripture? The following arguments are made: (1) Aristotelian poetics provides the basis for a method of narrative exposition that unifies …

Evaluation Of Foreign Accent Using Synthetic Speech (Perception)., Deborah Marie Rekart Jan 1985

Evaluation Of Foreign Accent Using Synthetic Speech (Perception)., Deborah Marie Rekart

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A meaningful sentence loaded with appropriate phonemic and syllabic forms was synthesized as a "standard" stimulus, and 60 "accented" versions of the sentence were made to stimulate varying degrees of a moderate and a strong Spanish accent by manipulating the following Spanish cues singly and in combination: (1) fundamental frequency, (2) voice onset time for syllable-initial voiceless stops, (3) Duration of medial stressed vowels, (4) F1, F2 and F3 for full vowels, and (5) F1, F2, and F3 for reduced vowels. Two tapes for each level of accent were prepared on which 30 accented stimulus sentences were each paired with …

In 1923 Lowrey became Chairman of the Department of Public Discourse at Baylor. A fledgling program, the department grew and matured into a respected organization under her able leadership. She instituted programs of study in oral interpretation, radio, and speech correction, spearheaded a radio project …

Literature As Phenomenon: Attribution Theory And The Act Of Performance (Oral, Interpretation, Pre-Formance, Newcomb, Bakhtin)., John Walthall Creagh Iii Jan 1985

Literature As Phenomenon: Attribution Theory And The Act Of Performance (Oral, Interpretation, Pre-Formance, Newcomb, Bakhtin)., John Walthall Creagh Iii

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Attribution theory seeks to explain the ways in which humans ascribe causes to everyday events, especially the observed behavior of other human beings. This study seeks to apply the basic patterns of social attribution to the act of "pre-formance"--the aesthetic act in which a performer engages the voice of a literary text and, through rehearsals involving attribuiton, embodies that voice for some audience. Theodore Newcomb's "symmetry theory," a model that contains the essential features of human attribution, is discussed within the philosophical perspective of phenomenology, and the transformed model is used as the basis for a new theory of the …

The Effects Of Listening And Writing Skills Training On Writing Performances Of Business Communications Students., Frances Waguespack Norwood Jan 1984

The Effects Of Listening And Writing Skills Training On Writing Performances Of Business Communications Students., Frances Waguespack Norwood

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study is to design, implement, and evaluate the listening and writing effects of training modules on the learning of grammar skills by higher education business communications students. The specific curriculum focus of this study is business communications in higher education. The literature reflects the need for effective listening in both classroom and business settings. In addition strong support for teaching writing can be found in the literature. Also, the literature reveals a moderate to strong relationship existing between listening skills and writing skills. However, the literature reflects little concern with the methods needed to develop these …

Manipur In Transition: Differentials Of Development In A Polyethnic Area Of India., Kiran Banga Chhokar Jan 1984

Manipur In Transition: Differentials Of Development In A Polyethnic Area Of India., Kiran Banga Chhokar

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The present study seeks to investigate the processes of socio-economic change that have affected the major ethnic groups in Manipur, mainly the subsistence level tribals and the Meitei peasantry; the strategies adopted by these groups, and individuals within the groups, to cope with the changed environment; and the spatial expression of these processes of change in varying patterns of development. Manipur, a polyethnic state in northeastern India, is currently the scene of hostilities among the different ethnic groups. The study tests the hypothesis that the underlying cause of these conflicts is the difference in the levels of development of the …

Studies In The Relationship Between Distinctive Features And Acoustic Cues (Phonetics, Phonology)., Thomas F. Walsh Jan 1984

Studies In The Relationship Between Distinctive Features And Acoustic Cues (Phonetics, Phonology)., Thomas F. Walsh

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The relationship between the Distinctive Feature (DF) (+OR-)Voice and its acoustic manifestation has generated a great deal of discussion in recent years. Although it is well known that the phonological voicing contrast is often not manifested in terms of actual glottal pulsation, the exact acoustic manifestation has been debated. The collection of papers presented herein considers perceptual evidence for the acoustic manifestation of (+OR-)Voice in English stops in utterance-final position, produced without release and with no glottal pulsation during closure. It is concluded that in such cases, the primary acoustic cue to (+OR-)Voice is the preceding vocalic transition. That is …

Where Did The Bayogoula Dance; Why Do They Sing No More: A Reexamination Of The Archaeology Of The Bayou Goula Area, Iberville Parish, Louisiana, Glen G. Fredlund Aug 1983

Where Did The Bayogoula Dance; Why Do They Sing No More: A Reexamination Of The Archaeology Of The Bayou Goula Area, Iberville Parish, Louisiana, Glen G. Fredlund

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Two objectives are undertaken. The first is the identity of the two 18th century archaeological sites at Bayou Goula. A reexamination of the ethnohistorical and -archaeological records of the area reveals that the Bayou Goula site traditionally accepted as an aboriginal village is actually the site of an early French settlement. A second archaeological site recently discovered is hypothesized to be the 1699 village of the Bayogoula and Mugulasha.

The second objective was a methodological study of aboriginal ceramics from this recently discovered site. The type-variety system is rejected in favor of an attribute or "modal" analysis in evaluating competing …

The Impact Of Sompa Elp Scores On Special Education Evaluation And Placement., Alan Lesley Taylor Jan 1983

The Impact Of Sompa Elp Scores On Special Education Evaluation And Placement., Alan Lesley Taylor

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The impact of the use of SOMPA Estimated Learning Potential (ELP) scores as a substitute for traditional IQ scores was examined as it affected students evaluated for special education in a large metropolitan school system. SOMPA is the System of Multicultural Pluralistic Assessment, an evaluation package developed by Jane Mercer (1979) to address concerns about bias in assessment of minority students and particularly to remove "unfair" labels of mental retardation. ELP scores represent IQ scores adjusted for the effects of sociocultural background and compared only to ethnic peer norms, with the general effect being to raise estimates of intellectual potential …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

One hundred ninety-seven Solitary Sandpipers, Tringa solitaria, and 213 Pectoral Sandpipers, Calidris melanotos, were examined for trematodes. Specimens were taken from the hosts' winter range in Ecuador, South America, during the fall and spring migrations from Louisiana and South Dakota in the United States, and from the breeding grounds of the Solitary Sandpiper in Ontario, Canada. The 13 species of trematodes recorded from the shorebirds included 5 that were common to both species of shorebirds: Tanaisia fedtschnkoi, Cyclocoelum obscurum, Paramonostomum sp., Leucochloridium variae, and Zonorchis microrochis. Of the remaining 8 species, Cyclocoelum brasilianum, Plagiorchis maculosus, Stephanoprora denticulata, and Eurytrema lubens …

"New Literary History" And The Postmodern Paradigm: Implications For Theatre History., Robert Gerard Staggenborg Jan 1983

"New Literary History" And The Postmodern Paradigm: Implications For Theatre History., Robert Gerard Staggenborg

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Thomas S. Kuhn writes of disciplinary paradigms, presuppositions tactily setting the epistemological boundaries of a particular field or of the vision of a particular epoch. In the past decade, a paradigmatic revolution has deeply altered the western world's sense of reality. A new postmodern paradigm has emerged and evidenced itself in such critical approaches to art as semiotics, phenomenology, poststructuralism, and hermeneutics. The aim of the present study is to identify the central theoretical perspective offered by the new paradigm, to examine and define the central critico-historical principles stemming from such a perspective, and to relate these principles to the …

Testing Standard Modern Paragraph Theories (Becker, Christensen, Rodgers)., Thomas Haskell Utley Jan 1983

Testing Standard Modern Paragraph Theories (Becker, Christensen, Rodgers)., Thomas Haskell Utley

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study tests the relative effectiveness of the standard modern paragraph theories of A. L. Becker, Francis Christensen, and Paul C. Rodgers, Jr., three major theorists contributing more sophisiticated explanations of the form of paragraphs than that of Alexander Bain, whose theory as summarized in the familiar principles of unity, coherence, and emphasis has dominated textbook explanations of paragraphing since the late nineteenth century. In this test the three theories have been applied to fourteen selected professional essays appearing in six of the best-selling composition readers. Of these essays, seven, designated as classical, are written by the most frequently anthologized …

A Study Of The Reading And Speaking Fundamental Vocal Frequency Of Aging Black Adults., Charlotte Anne Ducote Jan 1983

A Study Of The Reading And Speaking Fundamental Vocal Frequency Of Aging Black Adults., Charlotte Anne Ducote

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The present study explored the relationships between fundamental frequency means and range extents for black adults in three decade intervals from 50-79 years of age during two speaking tasks. One hundred thirty-three males and 144 females participated in a spontaneous speaking task. Only 28 males and 65 females were able to participate in the reading activity. The results of the reading central tendencies for males suggested that the mean fundamental frequency increases with age for each decade interval (107.14 Hz, 111.00 Hz, and 129.09 Hz, respectively). The males in the 50- and 60-year decades had significantly lower means than the …

The Social Construction Of Reality In A Total Institution: An Ethnography Of A State Residential School For The Deaf., Abbie Donald Evans Jan 1982

The Social Construction Of Reality In A Total Institution: An Ethnography Of A State Residential School For The Deaf., Abbie Donald Evans

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Above all deafness constitutes a language and communication problem. A child born deaf experiences a form of double deprivation: symbolic deprivation and social interactional deprivation. Both the development of self and the construction of a world (human culture) are impeded by the lack of language. This first ethnography of a state residential school for the deaf (SSD) follows Glaser and Strauss (1967) by developing a theory from "data" systematically obtained on the field. The formulations of Goffman, Berger and Luckmann, Mead and Bernstein guided this inquiry and provided it a sense of reference. The central problem investigated in question form …

The treatment text, Kleg and Rice: Race, Caste and Prejudice (1970), was accompanied by its achievement test, the Kleg-Puglisi: Cognitive Measuring Instrument which was used to measure cognitive change. A modified Bogardus Social Distance Scale, and a modified Kelly, Ferson, and Holtzman Desegregation Scale were the attitude change measuring instruments. Statistically significant differences were sought between experimental and control groups in cognition and attitudes, and attitude and cognition …

Schizophrenia And Creative Archetypes As Shown In Works By Thomas Bernhard., Karen Appaline Moseley Jan 1982

Schizophrenia And Creative Archetypes As Shown In Works By Thomas Bernhard., Karen Appaline Moseley

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Thomas Bernhard's work remains controversial after more than twenty years of critical acclaim. Attempts to interpret his work according to traditional literary standards have generated as many questions as answers. Anneliese Botond believes Bernhard's work cannot be understood only through literary analysis, and Gudrun Mauch proposes that Jungian archetypes are present in his autobiographical novels. Critics agree, however, that Bernhard portrays mad protagonists in a seemingly insane world. The present study analyzes schizophrenia, myth, and the creative process in Bernhard's work to propose purpose for his descriptions of madness. This study also addresses questions posed by J. de Cort, who …

The findings were tested statistically at the .05 level. In academic achievement, there were significant differences between the two groups only in mathematics computation, favoring bilingually educated students at the third-grade level and traditionally …

Second-Language Acquisition And The Development Of Pragmatic Code Selection Skills., Rebecca Ann Marcon Jan 1981

Second-Language Acquisition And The Development Of Pragmatic Code Selection Skills., Rebecca Ann Marcon

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Language samples and nonverbal behavior of 50 children attending bilingual Kindergarten programs were recorded from children's conversations with a puppet on three separate occasions. In order to determine the influence of the listener's language on children's code selection, the puppet spoke a different language on each occasion. Of particular interest was the extent to which children would make pragmatic adjustments in their verbal and nonverbal language codes in response to different listener needs. Differences in code selection which could be attributed to variation in second language proficiency were explored by contrasting the behavior of children classified as monolingual, limited second …

The Austrian Problem Of Language And Peter Handke: A Documentation., Donald Russell Bailey Jan 1981

The Austrian Problem Of Language And Peter Handke: A Documentation., Donald Russell Bailey

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Linguistic skepticism and the resultant awareness of the limits of language can be traced back to Hamann, Herder, and Humboldt, through Romanticism and French Symbolism, up to modern times. What has come to be called the crisis of language (Sprachkrise) can be viewed as one segment of a broader, multi-media phenomenon. The intensity of this crisis is concentrated in Austro-Hungary in the waning days of the Habsburg Monarchy. From this time forward supersensitivity to language remains a strongly Austrian phenomenon and can be followed through the European, German-language, and Austrian movements of this century, up to the founding of the …
