Soil- And Water-Based Management Strategies For Revegetation And Productivity Improvement Of Brackish Marsh Soil., Gilbert C. Sigua Jan 1990

Soil- And Water-Based Management Strategies For Revegetation And Productivity Improvement Of Brackish Marsh Soil., Gilbert C. Sigua

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Laboratory, greenhouse, and field experiments were conducted on brackish marsh soil of Hackberry, Louisiana (LA). This study was aimed to obtain detailed information on some soil- and water-based management factors that were applicable to the revegetation and productivity improvement of the area. This area was inundated by brackish-saline water, and is now open water, almost totally void of vegetation. The deteriorating productivity and continuous loss of vegetation in the study area can be related to the seasonal and temporal biochemical transformations. These transformations were significantly correlated to precipitation and minimum and maximum temperature in the area. Stochastic regression models were …

Historic Changes In Channel Morphology Of Mississippi River Tributaries: Southwestern Mississippi., Elaine Grace Yodis Jan 1990

Historic Changes In Channel Morphology Of Mississippi River Tributaries: Southwestern Mississippi., Elaine Grace Yodis

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study assesses the geomorphological changes to the fluvial systems of two rivers in southwestern Mississippi that have been foreshortened. Channel foreshortening in the lower reaches of these rivers is similar to a lowering of base level and causes a steepening of the channel gradient which leads to channel incision, bank erosion and increased sediment load. Analysis of historical and modern data and a comparison with three unmodified rivers in the same physiographic region, provide an estimate of the magnitude and rate that such disturbances are transmitted through the fluvial system. Degradation and channel instability of the Homochitto River and …

Discharge-Suspended Sediment Relationships In The Mississippi-Atchafalaya Rivers System, Louisiana., Joann Mossa Jan 1990

Discharge-Suspended Sediment Relationships In The Mississippi-Atchafalaya Rivers System, Louisiana., Joann Mossa

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Although suspension is the dominant mode of material transport in rivers world-wide, concepts of suspended sediment transport have come mostly from studies of small rivers. This study describes relationships between discharge and suspended sediment in a large river system, the Mississippi-Atchafalaya in south Louisiana. The primary objectives are: (1) to determine whether the suspended silt-clay and sand follow different relationships with discharge because the silt-clay is supplied largely from the basin whereas the sand is supplied largely from the channel perimeter; and (2) to determine whether hysteresis effects differ in high as compared to low discharge years because of conditions …

Narrative And Everyday Experience: Performance Process In The Storytelling Of The Swiss Volhynian Mennonites. (Volumes I And Ii)., John Elmer Mccabe-Juhnke Jan 1990

Narrative And Everyday Experience: Performance Process In The Storytelling Of The Swiss Volhynian Mennonites. (Volumes I And Ii)., John Elmer Mccabe-Juhnke

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examines oral narrative performance within the cultural context of the Swiss Volhynian Mennonites in Moundridge, Kansas, whose forebears were members of a congregational group that migrated from the Russian Province of Volhynia in 1874. These immigrants strove to maintain Gemeinde--a mutually supportive community of believers separated from the world. A Swiss Volhynian Mennonite himself, the author tape-recorded interviews with second and third generation descendants of the Russian immigrants. Using the interview transcriptions and personal observation in the Moundridge community as primary data, the author demonstrates how the formative elements of everyday narrative performance both sustain and are shaped …

A Geographical Perspective On United States Capital Punishment, 1801-1960., Eliza Husband Jan 1990

A Geographical Perspective On United States Capital Punishment, 1801-1960., Eliza Husband

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Geographical anomalies in American capital punishment are a key to interpreting this social practice. A nationwide change occurred after the 1830s from public execution to sequestered penitentiary execution. A regional contrast began developing during the same period that has lasted until now, with some states holding 20 or more executions annually, while others abolished the death penalty 75-125 years ago. The United States furnishes historical geographical conditions for persistence of capital punishment whose aftereffects are unlikely to be overcome. Popular support for the death penalty is efficacious in a democratized, decentralized decision-making process. Popular support has been particularly strong when …

Reality And Knowledge In Voegelin's Political Philosophy. (Volumes I & Ii)., Seung-Hyun Baek Jan 1989

Reality And Knowledge In Voegelin's Political Philosophy. (Volumes I & Ii)., Seung-Hyun Baek

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

It is the primary aim of this dissertation to draw attention to Voegelin's political philosophy and to place it at the center of the conduct of political inquiry, by criticizing positivistic political epistemology. Though scientism had become a dominant commitment, it does not provide an appropriate approach to political knowledge. Making reality dependent on methodology, it neglects important political existence, and fails to ask deeper questions about the truth-content political reality. However, there is an extra-spatio-temporal reality, that we can know, albeit imperfectly, and not discovered by the modern scientific methods. By means of the restoration and "retheoretization" of the …

The Proposal In An Engineering Context: A Field Study Of Document Development., Terry Martin Mcconathy Jan 1989

The Proposal In An Engineering Context: A Field Study Of Document Development., Terry Martin Mcconathy

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The specific goal of this field study was to develop an empirically-based description of engineering proposals as they are developed and used in their natural context; this goal was designed to provide a data base for further study addressing the general research interest of why the descriptions of proposals in technical writing textbooks vary so significantly from the types of proposals produced and used in an nonacacemic environment, specifically engineering. Using strategies borrowed and adapted from sociological and anthropological research methodologies, the study focused on collecting field-based data through interviews, field notes, questionnaires, and artifacts about the form, content, structure, …

The Effectiveness Of The Food And Nutrition 4-H Project In Improving Dietary Practices And Food Consumption Patterns Of High School Students In Louisiana., Saralene Brandon Seals Jan 1989

The Effectiveness Of The Food And Nutrition 4-H Project In Improving Dietary Practices And Food Consumption Patterns Of High School Students In Louisiana., Saralene Brandon Seals

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The primary purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the 4-H Foods and Nutrition project in Louisiana. The Foods and Nutrition project traditionally enrolls about one-fourth of the total membership. A second purpose of the study was to identify personal and household demographic characteristics that may influence dietary practices and food consumption patterns. Telephone interviews were conducted by extension home economists with a random sample of 277 4-H Foods and Nutrition project members ages 14-19 and 278 non-4-H members. The 4-H Foods and Nutrition program appears to be making a positive impact on 4-H project members' dietary …

Visual Arts Teacher Education: A Study Of Current Practices In Louisiana Universities., Eloise Mcclendon Murchison

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In this study, the researcher investigated visual arts teacher preparation programs at universities in Louisiana with particular emphasis on the curriculum component. The research was designed to survey teacher training programs and to compare the findings with delineated National Art Education Association standards. This study included only public institutions of higher education in Louisiana with visual arts education teacher preparation programs. The researcher conducted interviews at each of the 13 universities. Two of the universities worked together in a joint art education program. An interview guide was prepared and used to facilitate the interviewing process. Records and documents were also …

An Instructional Sequence In Music Education Using Vocal And Instrumental Music Of Five World Cultures., Sophronia Lois Thomas Jan 1989

An Instructional Sequence In Music Education Using Vocal And Instrumental Music Of Five World Cultures., Sophronia Lois Thomas

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The music of five non-Western cultures was incorporated in an instructional sequence for elementary grades (K)1-6. Traditional music of the Australian Aborigines and the Akan and Ewe tribes of Ghana, classical music of India, the music of the Indonesian gamelan, and Gagaku music of Japan were examined for the presence of musical concepts, the way each culture handles the concepts that are present, and the interrelationships that exist among the concepts. The music is described in terms of the musical concepts of dynamics, timbre, texture, rhythm, melody, harmony, and form. All of the concepts and their related percepts are organized …

Toward An Eschatological Curriculum Theory., George Patrick Slattery Jr Jan 1989

Toward An Eschatological Curriculum Theory., George Patrick Slattery Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study explores the relationship between eschatology and curriculum theory. Themes such as liberation, emancipatory knowledge, transformative pedagogy, concepts of time, impact of the future on present experience, and learning landscapes are traced in the emerging literature of theology and of curriculum theory. The mutual interest in these themes in both fields of study provides the basis for moving toward an eschatological curriculum theory. The reconceptualization which has occurred in curriculum theory and the new emphasis on eschatology in twentieth century theology both provide a foundation for this curriculum theory rooted in hope. In contemporary theology there is a movement …

From Forest, Stream, And Sea: Aspects Of Self-Sufficiency In The Nineteenth Century Louisiana Diet. (Volumes I And Ii)., James Patrick Whelan Jr Jan 1989

From Forest, Stream, And Sea: Aspects Of Self-Sufficiency In The Nineteenth Century Louisiana Diet. (Volumes I And Ii)., James Patrick Whelan Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Studies of foodstuff self-sufficiency in the antebellum South have shown that during the middle third of the nineteenth century, as represented by the census years 1840, 1850 and 1860, certain regions of Louisiana suffered from meat production deficits. It has been assumed by most interested scholars that these deficits were overcome by importing pork and beef from the midwest or Upper South. Other possible sources of meat supplements that have not been generally considered are the wild game and fishery resources of the state. Hunting and fishing have long traditions as important activities in the South in general and in …

The Dark Side Of Paradise: Race And Ethnicity In The Novels Of F. Scott Fitzgerald., Felipe Smith Jan 1988

The Dark Side Of Paradise: Race And Ethnicity In The Novels Of F. Scott Fitzgerald., Felipe Smith

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

According to author and scholar Ralph Ellison, the writers of the early twentieth century (with the exception of Faulkner) adopted Mark Twain's stylistic innovations in pursuit of their personal myth instead of "recreating and extending the national myth" by continuing Twain's development of "the Negro as the symbol of man." To Ellison, these writers had capitulated to a strong current prevalent in American thought: American self-definition in racially exclusive terms. They presented as reality stereotyped portrayals of blacks and other ethnic minorities which served as "key figure (s) in a magic rite by which the white American seeks to resolve …

Arguing Affect: The Rhetoric Of Peripheral Persuasion., Lewis Blaine Hershey Ii Jan 1988

Arguing Affect: The Rhetoric Of Peripheral Persuasion., Lewis Blaine Hershey Ii

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study explores the theoretical parameters of peripheral persuasion. Chapter one reviews social scientific approaches to the study of persuasion from researchers in communication theory, psychology, and marketing. This review reveals a bifurcation of the persuasion concept into cognitive and affective dimensions. After demonstrating a bias in social scientific research for the cognitive dimensions of persuasion, chapter one links the affective dimensions of persuasion with the concept of peripheral persuasion and emerging trends in rhetorical theory that emphasize narrative models of communication. Chapter two scrutinizes the distinction between cognitive or central routes to persuasion and affective or peripheral routes to …

The Legacy Of The Hawaiian Cultivator In Windward Valleys Of Hawaii. (Volumes I And Ii)., Ronald Norman Terry Jan 1988

The Legacy Of The Hawaiian Cultivator In Windward Valleys Of Hawaii. (Volumes I And Ii)., Ronald Norman Terry

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The composition of a forest of relicts of cultivation in four uninhabited valleys in Kohala, Hawaii, is documented. A general hypothesis is made that arboreal distribution patterns are a function of both historical land use and ecological interaction since abandonment. The physical and historical geography of the valleys was investigated. Climate varies little, but distinct geomorphic zones offer differing biological environments. Prehistoric land use consisted of taro patches with intercropped banks. Talus slope gardens supported the Polynesian tree crops 'ohi'a 'ai (Eugenia malaccensis), kukui (Aleurites moluccana), 'ulu, (Artocarpus incisus), ti (Cordyline terminalis), and noni (Morinda citrifolia), important in today's flora. …

An Analysis Of Industrial And Occupational Stratification In Rural Labor Market Areas., Ann Ziebarth Dellenbarger Jan 1988

An Analysis Of Industrial And Occupational Stratification In Rural Labor Market Areas., Ann Ziebarth Dellenbarger

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The geographic area where workers reside and work defines the labor market area. The opportunities available in labor market areas vary considerably. For workers, these differences represent opportunity boundaries. The employment profile of rural labor market areas and the resulting impact on workers' earnings are the foci of this research. Three research phases are reported. First, a descriptive analysis of labor market area differences is provided. Second, factors contributing to earnings differences are discussed. Third, results of exploratory analysis for farm couples' off-farm earnings are reported. The data used in analysis is the U.S. Census PUMS-D individual level data which …

Landscape Changes On The Mescalero Apache Reservation: Eastern Apache Adaptation To Federal Indian Policy., Martha L. Henderson Jan 1988

Landscape Changes On The Mescalero Apache Reservation: Eastern Apache Adaptation To Federal Indian Policy., Martha L. Henderson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Eastern Apache, once a hunter and gatherer culture group of Native Americans, now reside as a tribe formally recognized by the United States government on the Mescalero Apache Reservation in south central New Mexico. Since Eastern Apache were assigned to the reservation by executive order in 1883, the group has adopted aspects of American culture while maintaining Eastern Apache landscape patterns. This dissertation examines Eastern Apache landscape patterns prior to and after reservation assignment with the use of geographical, historical, ethnographic, and economic data. While United States Indian policy has emphasized culture change, Eastern Apache landscape patterns of land …

The Historical Geography Of Rice Culture In The American South., Jeon Lee Jan 1988

The Historical Geography Of Rice Culture In The American South., Jeon Lee

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The South Atlantic Hearth was the dominant rice producer during the colonial and antebellum periods. Rice production in the region declined after the outbreak of the Civil War, but the region kept the leading position until the 1880s. Along the Lower Mississippi River in southern Louisiana a remarkable amount of rice was produced from the antebellum period, reaching a peak in the 1890s. A major regional shift occurred when rice culture on a large-scale, commercial basis developed in southwestern Louisiana during the 1880s by transplanted Midwesterners. From there it spread into southeastern Texas during the last decade of the nineteenth …

Predicting The Past: The Geography Of Settlement In Louisiana, 1699-1890, And Its Application To Historic Preservation., Peter Bingham Mires Jan 1988

Predicting The Past: The Geography Of Settlement In Louisiana, 1699-1890, And Its Application To Historic Preservation., Peter Bingham Mires

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Historical geographers, because of their ability to place cultural phenomena in the appropriate spatial and temporal dimensions often conduct research that significantly parallels the interests of the preservationist. Now that the initial focus within historic preservation has shifted from the individual specimen to the cultural and historical milieu of which it was a part, a thorough understanding of the forces that were responsible for the creation of what confronts us as a relict cultural landscape is indispensable. The preservation of cultural resources, specifically historic sites and structures has, in the past, normally been conducted on a case-by-case basis. In this …

"Can You Tell Me Who My People Are?" Ethnic Identity Among The Hispanic-Indian People Of Sabine Parish, Louisiana, Mary B. Van Rheenen Aug 1987

"Can You Tell Me Who My People Are?" Ethnic Identity Among The Hispanic-Indian People Of Sabine Parish, Louisiana, Mary B. Van Rheenen

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This thesis explores the puzzle of ethnic identity for the Hispanic-Indian people of Sabine Parish. Because their unique history precludes the clear-cut ethnic identification available to immigrant American groups, the community shares the awkward social position of both the remnant Native American groups and mixed-blood communities collectively known as American Isolates. The issue of group identity for members of the Zwolle-Ebarb community has been further confounded by the internal and external stigmas attached to aspects of the group's origins as well as the negative image associated with the group's home territory. After the people have been identified historically and genealogically, …

The Cemetery As A Cultural Manifestation: Louisiana Necrogeography., Tadashi Nakagawa Jan 1987

The Cemetery As A Cultural Manifestation: Louisiana Necrogeography., Tadashi Nakagawa

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Cultural geography, in order to advance as a science, must stand on a deductive theory which is subject to empirical tests. This study establishes a scientific theory for geographical interpretation of cultural landscape by using Louisiana cemeteries as empirical objects. Based upon the assumption that, ultimately, only individual men can play a causative role in the creation of the cemetery landscape, a theory is constructed by examining man's action modeled on the practical syllogism. Operationally defined, culture is the expression of the individual's voluntary group identity that can be identified by comparing groups. A variety of group identities which are …

The Danish Cadastral Survey Of St. Croix, 1733-1754 (Virgin Islands)., Daniel Price Hopkins Jan 1987

The Danish Cadastral Survey Of St. Croix, 1733-1754 (Virgin Islands)., Daniel Price Hopkins

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation presents the history of the original cadastral survey of St. Croix by the Danish West India and Guinea Company in the early eighteenth century. St. Croix, the largest of the United States Virgin Islands, is distinguished by a remarkably regular and rectangular pattern of roads and properties, which appears to have had no parallel in the Lesser Antilles or Denmark. This is a case study of how colonial administrators approached the problem of the orderly alienation and demarcation of previously undivided land. The study is based mainly on original manuscript Company records in the Danish State Archive in …

Occupational Ethos Of Executive Directors Of State Councils On Vocational Education., Michael B. Moon Jan 1987

Occupational Ethos Of Executive Directors Of State Councils On Vocational Education., Michael B. Moon

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The fundamental purpose of this study was to describe the occupational ethos of Executive Directors of State Councils on Vocational Education. As the literature concerning education-related occupational ethos is sparse, the study was an effort to contribute to the literature and to provide an understanding of the occupation of Executive Director of State Councils on Vocational Education. The description of the ethos was derived from two significant viewpoints--orientations and sentiments exhibited by the executive directors. Collection of data for this study was accomplished through two means. The first method involved elite interviewing of a sample of 15 current executive directors …

The Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service: A Descriptive History Of Its Origin And Development. (Volumes I And Ii)., Edwin Clark Forrest Jr Jan 1987

The Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service: A Descriptive History Of Its Origin And Development. (Volumes I And Ii)., Edwin Clark Forrest Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation studies the conditions which brought the Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service (LCES) into existence in 1914 and which have sustained it for over 70 years. The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that 40 percent of Russia's population consists of farmers and that approximately 70 percent of China's population are farmers. The significance of these figures in relation to productivity is apparent when contrasted with the United States farm population of 2 percent. The current high level of production in American agriculture, sustained by such a small percentage of the population, is not an accident, as Professor Roy V. Scott, …

The Management Of Dying: Tasks And Social Relationships In Patient Care., Jeffrey Michael Clair Jan 1987

The Management Of Dying: Tasks And Social Relationships In Patient Care., Jeffrey Michael Clair

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A grounded theory approach guides the interpretation of observational, semi-structured interviews, content analysis, and taped discourse data collected from a 48 bed oncology unit with 288 study patients. Data are presented to explicate generated concepts of regressive intervention and the dying role. Data indicate that when physicians no longer perceive their goals of cure achievable, they distance themselves from patients. Physicians use certain devices to facilitate this gradual or abrupt, but purposeful, withdrawal from patients' curative regimens. These devices are specified in discourse transcripts as use of the medical record, silence, and alternative interactions (family members). Physician-authority, cautious optimistic conversational …
