Resort Evolution Along The Gulf Of Mexico Littoral: Historical, Morphological, And Environmental Aspects., Klaus J. Meyer-Arendt Jan 1987

Resort Evolution Along The Gulf Of Mexico Littoral: Historical, Morphological, And Environmental Aspects., Klaus J. Meyer-Arendt

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The development histories of eight coastal resorts along the Gulf of Mexico littoral (Fort Myers Beach, Pensacola Beach, Dauphin Island, Grand Isle, Galveston Island, South Padre Island, Tecolutia, and Progreso) are documented to evaluate variability of temporal, spatial, and environmental aspects of resort development. Temporally, a modified S-curve model of resort evolution is offered to describe the historical development of seaside resorts, and stages of exploration, infrastructural development, and settlement expansion precede each resort's levelling off stage. The upper level of development, or level of maturation, varies among the sites, primarily as a function of demand. Resorts in high demand …

Historical Geography Of Toledo Settlement, Belize, 1868-1985: A Transition From Confederate To East Indian Landscapes, Michael Anthony Camille May 1986

Historical Geography Of Toledo Settlement, Belize, 1868-1985: A Transition From Confederate To East Indian Landscapes, Michael Anthony Camille

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Toledo Settlement of southeastern Belize, today an East Indian community, was established in 1868 by 66 ex-Confederates. This study, a traditional historical geography, documents the major events that shaped the settlement and reconstructs the former Confederate community at its peak as well as the present East Indian landscape. Such a setting provides a superb opportunity to study the transition of cultural landscapes.

The early settlers cleared land and established 16 estates totaling 400 acres. They eventually prospered with the cultivation of sugar which occurred, in part, because of immigration into the settlement of East Indians to work as indentured …

A Dynamics And Sedimentology Study Of Eastern Atchafalaya Bay, Louisiana (Cluster Analysis, Estuarine)., Chaoyu Wu Jan 1986

A Dynamics And Sedimentology Study Of Eastern Atchafalaya Bay, Louisiana (Cluster Analysis, Estuarine)., Chaoyu Wu

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A new Mississippi River Delta is building in Atchafalaya Bay of southcentral Louisiana as a result of a upstream natural diversion in river course. The present study focuses on several distinct but complementary aspects of the physical processes of the modern Atchafalaya River Delta. Coherence analysis reveals that the subtidal fluctuations of water stage and current velocity in the estuarine area are closely related to atmospheric forcing at different time scales. The water stage fluctuations at Morgan City had significant variance at time scale 2.5-10 days which was driven by local longitudinal (north-south) winds. There were also fluctuations at periods …

The Image Of Walking In Hawthorne's Fiction (Journey Motif, Pilgrimage)., Frances Murphy Zauhar Jan 1986

The Image Of Walking In Hawthorne's Fiction (Journey Motif, Pilgrimage)., Frances Murphy Zauhar

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Various scholars have referred to the metaphorical journey in Hawthorne's work. This is the first comprehensive study of the journey image in Hawthorne's fiction. Inquiring into the relationship between the imagery in Hawthorne's short stories and his longer fiction, the study examines the sources of Hawthorne's fascination with the journey motif. Hawthorne uses the journey in his first published work, Fanshawe. Both contrived and derivative of his reading of travel literature and fiction, especially The Pilgrim's Progress, Fanshawe exhibits all facets of the journey-related imagery that Hawthorne employs in his later fiction. Hawthorne wrote his short stories after he wrote …

Church Buildings Enter The Urban Age: A Louisiana Example Of The Church In Settlement Geography (1885-1930)., Gail L. Schlundt Sechrist Jan 1986

Church Buildings Enter The Urban Age: A Louisiana Example Of The Church In Settlement Geography (1885-1930)., Gail L. Schlundt Sechrist

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The type of church building being erected today is quite different from the traditional white steepled church on the village green. Church buildings and their location in the community have gradually changed as American religion has become more complex. the changes in religion reflect the dramatic transformation of American society from a rural to an urban culture. This process began after the Civil War, but it was not widely acknowledged until the last decades of the nineteenth century. The transformation was not limited to the large urban centers, but can be seen in towns and villages across the nation. Various …

A Comparative Analysis Of Multidimensional Diffusion Models: The Diffusion Of The Prohibition Movement In The United States Of America, 1876-1919., Robert Paul Sechrist Jan 1986

A Comparative Analysis Of Multidimensional Diffusion Models: The Diffusion Of The Prohibition Movement In The United States Of America, 1876-1919., Robert Paul Sechrist

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Geographical study of the spatial spread of innovations has revealed much about the spatial components of innovation diffusion, but innovations diffuse in other dimensions as well. This study compares the ability of the classic spatial diffusion model with diffusion modeled in constructed social-economic dimensions. Each model is compared with its counterpart in its ability to simulate and explain the growth of the prohibition movement during the period 1876 to 1920. The various models indicate that prohibition spread in several dimensions simultaneously. The spatial diffusion model demonstrates that the innovation spread first to the West and then back North from a …

A Cultural Geography Of The Embera And Wounan (Choco) Indians Of Darien, Panama, With Emphasis On Recent Village Formation And Economic Diversification., Peter Harry Herlihy

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Choco Indians of Darien Province, eastern Panama, are one of the least accessible and unacculturated aboriginal groups in Central America. Divided into Embera and Wounan speakers, they number just over 11,000, or about one-fourth of the Choco who live throughout the Pacific lowlands of Colombia and Panama. This study, a traditional cultural geography, documents Choco life in Panama, with emphasis on the process of recent village formation. One village, Lajas Blancas, served as an example for a detailed documentation of agricultural systems and settlement forms. Data were also collected from 42 other communities during August 1981, and from August …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examines the characteristics of all homicide victims in Miami, Florida between 1978 and 1980 (N = 1186). Data was collected from the Medical Examiner's office and local law enforcement agencies. The study relates the distribution of various aspects of homicidal situations to one another and to behavioral, cultural, and structural groupings of victims. Special attention is given to levels of drug market involvement. Inferences are made at an aggregate level relevant to categories of victims. Social groupings of victims were better predictors of homicidal circumstances than socioeconomic status levels. SES was found to be most relevant to the …

Cadastral Surveying In Colonial South Carolina: A Historical Geography., Linda Marie Pett-Conklin Jan 1986

Cadastral Surveying In Colonial South Carolina: A Historical Geography., Linda Marie Pett-Conklin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Colonial South Carolina's cadastral pattern evolved as the product of a variety of factors. Foremost was the ability of settlers to choose the sites of their landholdings. This authority was limited, however, by official policies that prevented settlers from determining the size, shape, and quality of land in their grants. Expressed rules for surveying riparian and inland tracts in rectangular shapes resulted in a more regular pattern of landownership than is generally assumed in a metes and bounds survey. Within the guidelines of these and other policies, colonist nonetheless were permitted to occupy land in non-contiguous tracts resulting in a …

Sociologists And The Vietnam War: A Historical Document Analysis (Commodification, Post-Industrial)., Robert Earl Sanderson Jan 1986

Sociologists And The Vietnam War: A Historical Document Analysis (Commodification, Post-Industrial)., Robert Earl Sanderson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Textbooks are important representative statements of certified and legitimated knowledge within an academic discipline, and the manner in which introductory sociology textbooks assess society reflect the power and sophistication of theories in discerning social patterns and structures. That the pivotal historical event of the Vietnam War and its implications for contemporary American social institutions was virtually omitted in our sample of one hundred-twenty textbooks raises critical issues for sociology. Content analysis of Vietnam War era textbooks (1954-1975) revealed 75% of the sample, divided among four major research orienting paradigms extant in sociology, ignored mention of the war and only the …

Charlotte Perkins Stetson Gilman, A Voice For Progress And Perfection: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Selected Addresses, 1883-1892., Stephen Robert Guempel

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Amidst the social reform impulse of late nineteenth-century America, Charlotte Perkins Stetson--noted writer, lecturer, and social reformer--began her career as a spokeswoman for social justice. As such, she lectured to local religious groups, Nationalist clubs, women's clubs, and literary societies on a variety of subjects that included social ethics, family, motherhood, and art. In these many lectures and sermons, Stetson related her unyielding faith in and fervent expression of humanity's potential for perfectibility. This study analyzes six selected addresses delivered by Stetson between the years 1883 and 1892 in order to identify the rhetorical techniques she used to communicate her …

Symptoms In Relationship To Life Events (Stress, Social Supports, Life Experiences Survey, I-E Locus-Of-Control, Mmpi)., Karen Rinardo Speier Jan 1985

Symptoms In Relationship To Life Events (Stress, Social Supports, Life Experiences Survey, I-E Locus-Of-Control, Mmpi)., Karen Rinardo Speier

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Although there is considerable evidence to support the contributions of life event stress to subsequent psychological and physical symptoms, the correlations reported between obtained stress scores and illness measurements have been low. This study was undertaken to improve prediction of physical and psychological complaints subsequent to life event stress by more comprehensive measurement of life event characteristics and by assessment of locus of control, social supports, and somatization as moderating variables in the life stress-illness process. An overview of psychosomatic medicine was given and the relevant life event research was reviewed. Fifty undergraduate students completed the experimental version of the …

Changes In Hutterite House Types: The Material Expression Of The Contradiction Between "Being-On-The-Colony" And "Being-In-The-World" (Communitarian, Utopias, Marxism, Interactionism)., John Ian Francis Melland Jan 1985

Changes In Hutterite House Types: The Material Expression Of The Contradiction Between "Being-On-The-Colony" And "Being-In-The-World" (Communitarian, Utopias, Marxism, Interactionism)., John Ian Francis Melland

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In Hutterite society, tradition has dictated "what ought to be." This view of reality emphasizes simple living and avoidance of the world and is reflected in ascetic colony housing. However, as more areas of Hutterite life change in response to attempts to increase economic production, it is difficult to maintain avoidance as an ideal. As the gap between "idea and reality" increases, tradition is undermined, and on many colonies, normative validity claims are no longer unquestionable. Consequently, colony leaders are now confronted with demands for participation and collective consumption, especially for modern and more-private housing. This study explains how Hutterite …

Herman Frasch (German Immigrant Chemist, Standard Oil, Petroleum; Ohio, Louisiana)., William Ralph Sutton Jan 1984

Herman Frasch (German Immigrant Chemist, Standard Oil, Petroleum; Ohio, Louisiana)., William Ralph Sutton

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Herman Frasch (1851-1914) invented the hot-water process for mining sulphur that permitted the exploitation of the rich deposits beneath the coastal plain of the Gulf of Mexico. The Frasch process enabled the United States to become self-sufficient in the production of this important industrial mineral and the major supplier to the world. Frasch's new idea was to inject steam into the underground deposit to melt the sulphur and then pump the liquid to the surface. He patented the process in 1891 and first demonstrated its technical success at Sulphur, Louisiana in 1894. Initially plagued with problems due to the high …

Manipur In Transition: Differentials Of Development In A Polyethnic Area Of India., Kiran Banga Chhokar Jan 1984

Manipur In Transition: Differentials Of Development In A Polyethnic Area Of India., Kiran Banga Chhokar

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The present study seeks to investigate the processes of socio-economic change that have affected the major ethnic groups in Manipur, mainly the subsistence level tribals and the Meitei peasantry; the strategies adopted by these groups, and individuals within the groups, to cope with the changed environment; and the spatial expression of these processes of change in varying patterns of development. Manipur, a polyethnic state in northeastern India, is currently the scene of hostilities among the different ethnic groups. The study tests the hypothesis that the underlying cause of these conflicts is the difference in the levels of development of the …

Stratigraphy, Sedimentology, And Geologic Evolution Of Eastern Terraba Trough, Southwestern Costa Rica (Tectonics, Forearc Basin)., Peter B. Yuan Jan 1984

Stratigraphy, Sedimentology, And Geologic Evolution Of Eastern Terraba Trough, Southwestern Costa Rica (Tectonics, Forearc Basin)., Peter B. Yuan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Sedimentary rocks of eastern Terraba Trough, southwestern Costa Rica, were deposited in a fore-arc basin developed at an ocean-ocean convergent boundary. The basin developed in Middle to Late Eocene when the Farallon Plate began its subduction beneath the Caribbean Plate. Shallow-water carbonates of the Brito Formation were deposited on shoals of basement blocks. These were surrounded by deeper-marine areas in which volcaniclastics and carbonate debris accumulated. The Brito Formation consists of algal-foraminiferal packstone to grainstone, rudstone, and rare wackestone formed in force-slope, carbonate buildup, and open platform environments in a warm, tropical sea. The environmental conditions remained unchanged during the …

The Ethno-Archaeology Of The Houma Indians, Bryan L. Guevin Dec 1983

The Ethno-Archaeology Of The Houma Indians, Bryan L. Guevin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The focus of this research is comprised of two objectives. The first attempts to ethno-historically reconstruct the early historic culture of the Houma Indians of Louisiana based upon seventeenth and eighteenth century archival and documentary sources with attention being paid to such ethnographic aspects as Houma subsistence, social organization, and ceremonialism. The second objective, by way of utilizing additional historical documentation such as early cartographic evidence, predicts and locates historic Houma village sites. An archaeological examination and discussion of these sites is presented in terms of an attempt to diagnostically identify broad ethnic markers within the historic Houma material culture.

Where Did The Bayogoula Dance; Why Do They Sing No More: A Reexamination Of The Archaeology Of The Bayou Goula Area, Iberville Parish, Louisiana, Glen G. Fredlund Aug 1983

Where Did The Bayogoula Dance; Why Do They Sing No More: A Reexamination Of The Archaeology Of The Bayou Goula Area, Iberville Parish, Louisiana, Glen G. Fredlund

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Two objectives are undertaken. The first is the identity of the two 18th century archaeological sites at Bayou Goula. A reexamination of the ethnohistorical and -archaeological records of the area reveals that the Bayou Goula site traditionally accepted as an aboriginal village is actually the site of an early French settlement. A second archaeological site recently discovered is hypothesized to be the 1699 village of the Bayogoula and Mugulasha.

The second objective was a methodological study of aboriginal ceramics from this recently discovered site. The type-variety system is rejected in favor of an attribute or "modal" analysis in evaluating competing …

"New Literary History" And The Postmodern Paradigm: Implications For Theatre History., Robert Gerard Staggenborg Jan 1983

"New Literary History" And The Postmodern Paradigm: Implications For Theatre History., Robert Gerard Staggenborg

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Thomas S. Kuhn writes of disciplinary paradigms, presuppositions tactily setting the epistemological boundaries of a particular field or of the vision of a particular epoch. In the past decade, a paradigmatic revolution has deeply altered the western world's sense of reality. A new postmodern paradigm has emerged and evidenced itself in such critical approaches to art as semiotics, phenomenology, poststructuralism, and hermeneutics. The aim of the present study is to identify the central theoretical perspective offered by the new paradigm, to examine and define the central critico-historical principles stemming from such a perspective, and to relate these principles to the …

A Taxonomy For Industrial Salesforce Job Activities., William C. Moncrief Iii Jan 1983

A Taxonomy For Industrial Salesforce Job Activities., William C. Moncrief Iii

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A taxonomy developed of specific selling activities of industrial salespeople was developed to differentiate "types" of salespeople. The taxonomy was developed based on the responses of 1393 salespeople from 51 companies to a survey of the frequency with which they performed activities, and the time spent to perform each activity. The first stage of the research was the compilation of an exhaustive list of sales activities. These activities were collected from a series of focus groups and personal interviews. The questionnaire was formulated based on the 121 sales activities collected from the focus groups. Two scales were designed and implemented …

Use Of Landsat Multispectral Scanner Digital Data For Mapping Suspended Solids And Salinity In The Atchafalaya Bay And Adjacent Waters, Louisiana., Robert Hilton Hughes

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The objective of this study was to use Landsat multispectral scanner (MSS) digital data in combination with concurrently collected in situ data for the assessment and mapping of water quality parameters within Atchafalaya Bay, Louisiana and adjoining estuarine waters. The water quality parameters investigated were suspended solids and salinity. The approach required the collection of water quality samples by helicopter at 33 preselected sample sites within two hours of the overpass of the Landsat spacecraft. Statistical regression models were developed between the Landsat MSS data and each of the water quality parameter measurements. The regression models were extended to the …

From Boom To Bust: Post Gold Rush Patterns Of Adjustment In A California Mining Region. (Volumes I And Ii)., Lary Michael Dilsaver Jan 1982

From Boom To Bust: Post Gold Rush Patterns Of Adjustment In A California Mining Region. (Volumes I And Ii)., Lary Michael Dilsaver

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Mining in Nevada, Placer, El Dorado, and Amador counties in California began with the discovery of gold at Coloma in 1848. Thousands of people flocked to the region, built towns, roads, and an economy dependent on placer gold mining. Declining placer resources, coupled with strikes outside California, signalled the end of the boom period in the region. A long adjustment in the man-land system culminated with the end of mining as a significant economic function during World War I. Three major processes operated to alter the region from one with a mono-functional economy, a mobile population, and spatial homogeneity to …
