Women's Stories Of Reading And Writing: Three Literacy Life Histories., Mary Annette Duchein
Women's Stories Of Reading And Writing: Three Literacy Life Histories., Mary Annette Duchein
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The stories of three retired women who have shown a lifelong and continuing commitment to learning and literacy were addressed through life history methodology. Three literacy life histories were produced which were then analyzed in light of current research in the field of reading and literacy. All life phases were addressed, but emphasis was placed on the retirement years. Results confirmed prior research in the field of reading across four lifespan phases--preformal schooling, formal schooling, homemaker/workplace, and retirement--and suggested that reading and writing grew in importance during the retirement years and led to an extension or increase in mental awareness. …
The Writing Behaviors Of Five Kindergarteners Writing In Social Context: A Home-School Perspective., Wanda Henderson Handy
The Writing Behaviors Of Five Kindergarteners Writing In Social Context: A Home-School Perspective., Wanda Henderson Handy
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between written language and spoken language and the function of that relationship during the beginning writing development of five kindergarteners from diverse literacy environments. In addition, observable writing behaviors of these five kindergarteners from more literate and less literate home environments were studied at home and in school. Ethnographic methodology was employed. Data collection included interviews, participant observation, field notes, checklists, photographs, audio recordings, video recordings, and writing samples. For 4 months, the case study participants were observed once a week while writing at home and in the school writing …
Concept Circle Diagrams: A Metacognitive Learning Strategy To Enhance Meaningful Learning In The Elementary Science Classroom., Connie Sue Nobles
Concept Circle Diagrams: A Metacognitive Learning Strategy To Enhance Meaningful Learning In The Elementary Science Classroom., Connie Sue Nobles
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to explore the use of concept circle diagrams, a newly developed metacognitive strategy (Wandersee, 1987), for meaningful science learning. Two research questions were: (a) Do concept circle diagrams enhance the identification and learning of science concepts more than traditional learning methods? and (b) Do concept circle diagrams evolve in quality within and across three sequences of direct explanation, guided practice, and independent practice? This study builds upon earlier research on two important metacognitive strategies, Vee diagrams (Gowin, 1981) and concept mapping (Novak & Gowin, 1984), used in science education. Participants were members of two …

A Geoforensic Analysis Of State-Owned Waterbottoms In South Louisiana: Gauging The Geographical Impacts Of Louisiana Court Decisions. (Volumes I And Ii)., George Joseph Castille Iii
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The extent of State-owned waterbottoms in south Louisiana was examined through an analysis of Louisiana State court decisions. This analysis included court cases dating from 1812, the year of statehood, until 1992. Sample court cases were divided into groups representing some of the major issues involved in waterbottoms disputes for both coastal and inland areas. The nature of waterborne commerce was examined with an emphasis on identifying the types and sizes of watercraft used in commerce. The identification of waterborne commerce is important because the State owns the bottoms of all naturally formed navigable waterbodies, and navigability is determined by …
A Performance-Centered Approach To Leslie Marmon Silko's "Ceremony"., Randall Thomas Hill
A Performance-Centered Approach To Leslie Marmon Silko's "Ceremony"., Randall Thomas Hill
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study argues that in Ceremony Leslie Marmon Silko rehearses her Laguna-Keres culture and her culture's interactions with others. She accomplishes this rehearsal by employing representations of performances from the Laguna people as well as other cultures. To establish the context of my argument, first I offer a brief exploration of the current critical interest in Native American arts and cultures, review questions involved in defining the parameters for a study of Native American novels, examine the significance of Native novels for performance scholarship, and review performance studies scholars' responses to Native texts. Second, I review methodologies from a variety …
The Unbearable Heaviness Of Politics: Milan Kundera On Aesthetics, Being And Political Consciousness, Sidney S. Fazio
The Unbearable Heaviness Of Politics: Milan Kundera On Aesthetics, Being And Political Consciousness, Sidney S. Fazio
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The work of Czech novelist Milan Kundera provides some interesting philosophical and aesthetic reflections upon the nature of human existence. Kundera strives to make concrete discoveries about human experiences through his novels. The role of the novel in revealing concrete existence presents one with a unique means to ponder political questions. Kundera's aesthetic and political philosophy arises from his distinct world view and aesthetic theory, based on three overarching premises, which insist that the most important goals for a novelist (or anyone) are: to make discoveries about existence; to ask questions without offering answers; and to express the fundamental ambiguity …

Attitudes Toward International Harmonization Efforts: A Cross-Cultural Study., M. Aileen Smith
Attitudes Toward International Harmonization Efforts: A Cross-Cultural Study., M. Aileen Smith
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The last two decades have seen a significant increase in the number and size of multinational corporations and a growing global investment environment. Linked to that growth has been a call for standards that produce accounting information that is capable of crossing national boundaries. One of the groups of professional elites that have addressed the call for harmonized international accounting standards is the International Accounting Standards Committee (IASC). The IASC objective (IASC 1988, 1) states that it will "work generally for the improvement and harmonization of regulations, accounting standards and procedures ... " To address such a goal, the IASC …
Impact Of The Preservice Field Experience In Foreign Language Teaching: A Study Of The Development Of Preservice Teachers' Perspectives In Foreign Language Teaching. (Volumes I And Ii)., Denise Egea-Kuehne
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Within the broader issue of teacher education, the focus of this study is on one of the most neglected areas of inquiry in the field of foreign languages, the preservice field experience, and the development of student teachers' perspectives of foreign language teaching. The following questions were specifically addressed: (1) What perspectives of foreign language teaching do student teachers hold upon completion of their program of university courses? (2) Is there an alteration of student teachers' perspectives of foreign language teaching during their student teaching semester? (3) What factors appear to influence student teachers' perspectives of foreign language teaching during …
Cultural Studies And The Multicultural Curriculum., Mary Susan Huddleston Edgerton
Cultural Studies And The Multicultural Curriculum., Mary Susan Huddleston Edgerton
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Although some of the most recent work in the field of multicultural education has acknowledged and begun to theorize about what has been called the new cultural politics of difference, problems concerning the very notions of marginality, boundaries, and their accompanying "essentialist" thought remain undertheorized. It is my intention to bring discussions about marginality and essentialism from literary theory, feminist psychoanalytic theory and poststructuralist philosophy more explicitly into the conversation about multicultural curriculum theorizing. In this study I have attempted to further develop this conversation around notions of "translation" as generated by philosophers Michel Serres (1982) and John Rajchmann (1991) …
Making The Secular Sacred: An Analysis Of Linguistic Devices Used To Give Religious Perspective To Ordinary Events., Wayne Porter Gregory
Making The Secular Sacred: An Analysis Of Linguistic Devices Used To Give Religious Perspective To Ordinary Events., Wayne Porter Gregory
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
It has been suggested that human beings do not possess social reality so much as they actively and cooperatively construct it by means of language in interaction with others. The manipulation of symbols, the creation of inferences, the posturing of one's personal identity all work together to enable participants (both speakers and hearers) in a given speech event to create social reality and reaffirm and maintain their social relationships. In religious speech communities, like the one investigated in this study, participants seek to create a different kind of social reality--one that encompasses all of the individual and corporate experiences of …
Detecting The Scale And Resolution Effects In Remote Sensing And Gis., Changyong Cao
Detecting The Scale And Resolution Effects In Remote Sensing And Gis., Changyong Cao
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study examines the relationship between resolution and fractal dimensions of remotely sensed images. Based on the results of testing for the reliability of the algorithms on hypothetical surfaces, the isarithm algorithm is selected for determining the fractal dimensions of remotely sensed images. This algorithm is then applied to simulated fractal Brownian motion images and four calibrated airborne multispectral remotely sensed image data sets with different true and artificial resolutions for Puerto Rico. The results from applying the fractal method to images at different levels of resolution suggest that the higher the resolution of an image, the higher the fractal …
The Theatre Of Religion: Jimmy Swaggart Within American Myth Discourse., Terry Grant Byars
The Theatre Of Religion: Jimmy Swaggart Within American Myth Discourse., Terry Grant Byars
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study explores the myth of the self-made man in American popular culture and how Jimmy Swaggart, the renowned televangelist, manipulates this myth in representing himself as an American hero. Central to such inquiry is Swaggart's use of theatrical device in promoting his heroism. Three fundamental questions provide the focus for investigation: (1) How in general does the creation of myth serve the needs of culture? (2) How specifically does the myth of self-made-ness benefit American culture? and (3) How is Swaggart able to participate in this powerful myth (especially using theatrical modes) in order to gain cultural sanction? In …
Death At The Hands Of Persons Unknown: The Geography Of Lynching In The Deep South, 1882 To 1910., Mary Elizabeth Hines
Death At The Hands Of Persons Unknown: The Geography Of Lynching In The Deep South, 1882 To 1910., Mary Elizabeth Hines
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This research explores the county-level lynching record of four Deep South states--Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Mississippi--to discover the spatial and temporal distribution of lynching within the region and its relationship to social and economic conditions. The period of 1882 to 1910 is selected because lynching reached its highest levels in those decades. Demographic and economic variables from the United States censuses characterize Deep South counties as urban or rural and rich or poor. The physiography and historical attributes of counties are also considered. The research objective is to improve understanding of lynching in the postbellum Deep South through geographic analysis. …

Preservice Teachers' Evolving Perspectives Of Elementary Social Studies., Elizabeth K. Wilson
Preservice Teachers' Evolving Perspectives Of Elementary Social Studies., Elizabeth K. Wilson
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Recent studies which have focused on preservice teachers' perspectives of elementary social studies have attempted to discover the product of the relationships between their conceptions of social studies and their classroom practices. This research, conducted only during the clinical experience, indicated that the beliefs and ideas which teachers express about social studies have little effect on classroom practice. In order to better understand this phenomenon, this study investigated the evolution of preservice teachers' perspectives of social studies through methods instruction as well as the clinical experience. The participants for this study were four preservice teachers who were enrolled in the …
A Reading Of "A Good Man Is Hard To Find" And "A Curtain Of Green": The Influence Of Parable On Flannery O'Connor And Eudora Welty., Allison Carol Chestnut
A Reading Of "A Good Man Is Hard To Find" And "A Curtain Of Green": The Influence Of Parable On Flannery O'Connor And Eudora Welty., Allison Carol Chestnut
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A Good Man is Hard to Find by Flannery O'Connor and A Curtain of Green by Eudora Welty are short story cycles harmonized by their marked imitation of the style and structure of parable. O'Connor added stories after initially sending the collection to the publisher and then rearranged them accordingly; her work represents a completed cycle. Welty's collection, published in an order different from their individual publications and their original placement in an early typescript, is an arranged cycle. Moreover, parabolic style and structure unify each cycle. A parable typically is a brief story told in the past tense, usually …

An Ethnographic Study Of Kindergarten Children's Literacy Skills And Stress-Related Behaviors Before And After Teacher Demonstration., Nancy Crossland Weems
An Ethnographic Study Of Kindergarten Children's Literacy Skills And Stress-Related Behaviors Before And After Teacher Demonstration., Nancy Crossland Weems
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this ethnographic research was to study kindergarten students' literacy skills and stress-related behaviors and a teacher's instructional behavior before and after demonstrations in appropriate bookreading strategies. A lower socio-economic setting, which previously had been identified by Burts, Hart, Charlesworth, and Kirk (1990a) as a developmentally inappropriate instructional environment, was selected for observation as one which might be amenable to change. The demonstrations included bookreading strategies that the kindergarten teacher could implement to promote the acquisition of literacy in ways that do not contribute to stress. Ethnographic data collection consisted of three months of participant observation in one …
School Centralization And Organizational Effectiveness: The Role Of Teacher Alienation., Bobby L. Johnson Jr
School Centralization And Organizational Effectiveness: The Role Of Teacher Alienation., Bobby L. Johnson Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The focus of educational reform in recent years has shifted to the restructuring of schools. Many reformers have defined restructuring in terms of the decentralization of power within schools (Elmore et al., 1990). Yet, there is little research to suggest how such decentralization will affect teachers and improve schools. Given this scarcity, the purpose of this study was to explore the relationships between the degree of centralized decision-making which exists in a school, teachers' cognitive and affective work alienation, and multiple indices of school effectiveness. Such relationships were examined within the context of Seeman's (1972) framework of social change as …
An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Input Type And Output Modification In English As A Second Language., Doris M. V Macdonald
An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Input Type And Output Modification In English As A Second Language., Doris M. V Macdonald
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Proposals regarding the beneficial effects of elements of modified interaction such as clarification requests and confirmation checks on SLA have been taken up by a number of researchers who have found evidence for their existence in discourse involving NNSs. These investigators have assumed that the presence of such interactional features are beneficial to language learning, yet there is little empirical evidence to support a causal relationship between the presence of these discourse features and change in the performance of the learner toward target-language forms. Furthermore, the potential benefits of modified interactions have not been evaluated against other classroom practices. This …
The Federal Writers' Project's Mirror To America: The Florida Reflection., Pamela G. Bordelon
The Federal Writers' Project's Mirror To America: The Florida Reflection., Pamela G. Bordelon
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In the 1930s, the federal writers of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) plowed fertile new ground in American cultural scholarship. The writers were for the most part not professionals but white collar workers who had been dramatically rescued from unemployment by this government relief project. Like other New Deal relief agencies, the Writers' Project had been created more to make work than to do work. But by the end of the program, it had charted a nation and documented American life more comprehensively than any earlier effort had done. In Florida the federal writers produced a state guide, pioneered African-American …
Toward A Phenomenology Of Curriculum: The Work Of Max Van Manen And T. Tetsuo Aoki., Robert Kent Brown
Toward A Phenomenology Of Curriculum: The Work Of Max Van Manen And T. Tetsuo Aoki., Robert Kent Brown
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In this study an attempt was made at understanding contemporary thought and application of phenomenological research to the field of curriculum and instruction. More specifically, it sought to identify a place and need for a methodology in curriculum research that exposes and clarifies the dynamics of pedagogy as a result of investigating the existential/ontological nature of pedagogical activity. In accomplishing this, the works of two major North American phenomenological curriculum theorists, T. Tetsuo Aoki and Max van Manen were examined. The work of these two significant contemporary curriculum theorists was used due to the international recognition their seminal phenomenologically oriented …
The Rhetoric Of Community Ritual: The Blessing Of The Shrimp Fleet At Chauvin, Louisiana., Barbara Elizabeth Gordon
The Rhetoric Of Community Ritual: The Blessing Of The Shrimp Fleet At Chauvin, Louisiana., Barbara Elizabeth Gordon
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study examines the rhetorical functions of a community ritual, the blessing of the shrimp fleet at Chauvin, Louisiana. Chauvin is a Cajun community in south Louisiana. Their annual fleet blessing was instituted in the 1930's and continues today relatively unchanged. The author observed the preparations and performance of the blessing and boat parade and also interviewed community members about the blessing. The observations and interview transcriptions are the primary data used for analysis of the community discourse. Fantasy theme analysis is used to demonstrate the community's use of discourse to develop and maintain group hierarchy. The discourse reveals six …

The Pirates' Wake: A Geography Of Piracy And Pirates As Geographers In Colonial Spanish America, 1536-1718. (Volumes I And Ii)., Peter Reppert Galvin
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This geographical study of piracy in Spanish America spans from 1536, the beginning date of sustained piratical activity there, to the near dispersion of pirate forces by 1718. It identifies and relates the operations of sixteenth-century corsairs such as Francis Drake, seventeenth-century buccaneers such as Henry Morgan, and eighteenth-century freebooters such as 'Blackbeard'. Regional coverage focuses on Middle America with an occasional foray into the South Sea. The principal national agents considered are English, French, Dutch, and Spanish. The study begins by deriving a working definition of pirates and examining precedent spatial approaches by Henry Mainwaring, Ellen Semple, and Derwent …

Barrier Island Evolution, Delta Plain Development, And Chenier Plain Formation In Louisiana., Patrick Shea Penland
Barrier Island Evolution, Delta Plain Development, And Chenier Plain Formation In Louisiana., Patrick Shea Penland
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Coastal Louisiana has long served as a laboratory for delta and chenier plain research due to the presence of North America's largest river, the Mississippi. The development and preservation of transgressive depositional systems in abandoned delta complexes follows the process of transgressive submergence in which the horizontal component of reworking occurs during shoreface retreat, combined with a vertical component of submergence acting to preserve the sequence. The evolution of transgressive depositional systems in each of the abandoned Holocene Mississippi River delta complexes can be summarized in a three-stage model beginning with stage 1, an erosional headland and flanking barriers; stage …

Intrinsic Intertextuality:A Methodology For Analyzing The Seamless Intertext., Karen Sue Mitchell
Intrinsic Intertextuality:A Methodology For Analyzing The Seamless Intertext., Karen Sue Mitchell
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study argues for a methodology that applies contemporary theories of literature and performance to a certain kind of performance script I call a seamless intertext. Working deductively from theory to dramatic text, I explore what selected portions of extant performance and textual theory have to offer in examining, describing, and explaining these seamless intertexts. Working inductively from dramatic text to theory, I extend and offer further clarification and an extension of current theory through a more detailed explanation of the scripting explicit in each dramatic text. In the study I synthesize existing theory in intertextuality and define and describe …
