This report explores how screen production educators in the ASPERA community are responding to the rapid integration of generative Artificial Intelligence (genAI) in teaching and learning. Framed by Sean Cubitt’s (2020) notion of Common Intelligence, we investigate two guiding questions: How are students engaging with genAI tools in their productions, and what are the implications for educators? Methodologically, we engaged in qualitative professional dialogue with screen practice educators through three mechanisms during the 2024 ASPERA Conference: lightning provocations, an anonymous Mentimeter survey, and a facilitated roundtable discussion. These activities provided a collaborative forum for educators to share practice-based insights, reflect …

Xerostomia, the subjective sensation of dry mouth, is a debilitating consequence of head and neck radiotherapy and autoimmune disorders such as Sjögren’s syndrome. It severely impairs oral health and quality of life by promoting mucosal ulceration, infection, malnutrition, and speech difficulties, yet effective regenerative treatments remain limited. Macrophages have recently emerged as critical regulators of salivary gland repair through their roles in coordinating inflammation, fibrosis, and epithelial regeneration; however, the molecular mechanisms governing macrophage activation and function in the injured salivary gland remain poorly defined. The Wnt/β-catenin signalling pathway is a key regulator of inflammation and tissue homeostasis across multiple …

Ocean Observing System Design: Transatlantic Acoustic Propagation For Acoustic Thermometry, Brian D. Dushaw, Dimitris Menemenlis, John A. Colosi
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Ocean acoustic thermometry is simulated in the North Atlantic using two global ocean state estimates to assess its potential contributions to the Global Ocean Observing System. Acoustic data were simulated for transatlantic acoustic propagation from Cabo Verde to Bermuda, a 4183-km archetypal path across the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Acoustic scattering by internal waves was simulated using a range-dependent, stochastic model added to the ocean state estimates. While the Ridge blocks acoustic propagation traveling deeper than about 3000 m, and internal-wave sound speed scintillations cause prohibitive scattering of later-arriving rays, it is apparent that O(10) acoustic ray arrivals on this path are …

Many heterotroph species perish when faced with severe food limitation; others can persist, adapt, and thrive. Sea urchins are emblematic of this paradox: they can overgraze kelp forests to form barren habitats, but can then survive for decades in these nutritionally depauperate seascapes. Understanding the mechanisms enabling persistence under starvation and rapid recovery when food returns provides insights into how consumer resilience shapes ecosystem dynamics. We quantified how food abundance, quality, deprivation, and reintroduction influence bioenergetic performance in the red sea urchin (Mesocentrotus franciscanus), integrating field observations of kelp forest and barren populations with a controlled feeding experiment. We measured …

In vertebrates, newly synthesized lysosomal enzymes traffic to lysosomes through the mannose-6-phosphate (M6P) pathway. The Golgi membrane protein LYSET was recently discovered to regulate lysosome biogenesis by controlling the level of GlcNAc-1-phosphotransferase (GNPT). However, its working mechanism remained unclear. In this study, we demonstrate that LYSET is a two-transmembrane protein essential for GNPT stability, cleavage by Site-1 Protease (S1P), and enzymatic activity. We reconcile conflicting models by showing that LYSET enhances GNPT cleavage and prevents its mislocalization to lysosomes for degradation. We further establish that LYSET achieves this by interacting with GOLPH3 and retromer complexes to anchor the LYSET-GNPT complex …

Nlp Bias And African American English, Kenya Roy, Faizan Javed
SMU Data Science Review
African American English (AAE), also referred to as African American Vernacular English (AAVE), is widely used on social media, but most sentiment analysis tools are trained only on Standard American English (SAE). This mismatch can cause models to misclassify dialectal expressions—especially by labeling neutral or positive AAE as negative or toxic. These errors matter, since Natural Language Processing (NLP) systems are now central to content moderation and brand monitoring. This research will evaluate the VADER, RoBERTa, GPT-OSS, and Gemma’s handling of AAE in comparison to SAE using the TwitterAAE corpus, a public dataset of tweets with estimated AAVE usage. The …

Antibiotic Resistance For Diarrheagenic Escherichia Coli Isolated From Under 5 Years’ Age Patients In Al-Diwaniyah City, Azhar Ali, Manal M. Kadhim
Al-Qadisiyah Medical Journal
Background: Escherichia coli, a common bacterium, is becoming increasingly resistant to antibiotics, making diarrhea treatment difficult. This is especially concerning for multidrug-resistant (MDR) and extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing strains. These "superbugs" can resist multiple antibiotics and spread easily among bacteria.Traditional treatments like ampicillin and tetracycline are becoming less effective. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends fluoroquinolones, macrolides, and rifaximin for some cases, but these have limitations. Aim of the study The present study aims to explore the antimicrobial resistance of diarrheagenic E. coli pathotypes to determinate the antibiotics resistance pattern. Methodology Twelve isolates of diarrheagenic E. coli isolated …

The clinical presentation of COVID-19 varies greatly from case to another, with host characteristics playing a pivotal role. The immune system is a pivotal function in establishing the course of SARS-COV-2 infection. Severe instances of COVID-19 and the resulting death are caused less by the virus itself than by the destructive unrestrained immune response. Among the host determinants for poor disease prognosis is probably genetic vulnerability to dysregulated immune response. The objective of this work is to examine some of the host genetic variables that are being studied in relation to the severity of COVID-19. The complex relationship between autoimmunity …

Abstract: Background: Human respiratory syncytial virus( RSV) is the major etiological agent of respiratory tract illness particularly in children, and it provokes allergic and asthma exacerbation, so, the respiratory tract epithelial cell are stimulated and produce several chemokines such as MDC and TARC that play a major role in asthma attack. Objective: To identify human genetic groups of RSV from children with respiratory tract infection and establish the relationship between RSV and allergy exaggeration through determination of the host gene expression (TARC and MDC) which are induced by RSV infection. Methods: Patients suffering from respiratory tract illness (RTI), from several …

Background : Zinc has a role in normal growth and development during pregnancy, childhood, and is needed for the proper sense of taste and smell. Studies on animals, adolescents and low birth weight neonates showed that oral zinc salt intake decreased serum bilirubin level, probably through inhibition of the bilirubin enterohepatic circulation. Objective : To study the effect of serum zinc level of the newborn and their mothers on neonatal jaundice. Patient and methods A case control study included a total 130, 65 with jaundice and 65 healthy neonates with their mothers. The study was carried out from May to …

Association Between Antibiotic Resistance And Integron Class2 Among Commonsal Escherichia Coli Genotypic Groups, Manal M. Khadhim, Meraim A. Kazaal
Al-Qadisiyah Medical Journal
Antibiotic therapies can not affect only on the pathogenic bacteria, but also commensal microorganisms in the humans gut, which might serve as a reservoir of antimicrobial resistance genes. fecal Escherichia coli (E. coli) is often considered as a good indicator for selection pressure imposed by antimicrobial use. The goal of this study was to determine genotyping groups of commonsal E. coli and investigate the frequency of integrons class 2 and antibiotic resistance among them. So detect the association of integron class2 with antibiotic resistance (single and multiple drug resistance) that may be transport horizontally in bacterial populations. In this study …
