Effect Of Isolated Soy Protein On The Bioavailability Of Copper In Ground Beef., James L. Smith
Effect Of Isolated Soy Protein On The Bioavailability Of Copper In Ground Beef., James L. Smith
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Test diets containing ground beef extended with 0, 10, 20 and 30% ISP were fed to Single Comb White Leghorn chicks and 28 days to determine the effect of isolated soy protein (ISP) on the availability of copper naturally present in meat. Copper content of the test diets decreased with increasing levels of ISP, ranging from 6.89 (+OR-) 0.17 ppm to 2.09 (+OR-) 0.12 ppm. Mean feed consumption per diet also decreased with increasing ISP levels as did the amount of copper consumed per bird. Although the mg copper consumed per bird decreased from diet I to diet IV, the …

The Justices Of The Peace Of Surrey In National And County Politics, 1483-1570. (Volumes I And Ii)., William Baxter Robison Iii
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Surrey provides an excellent case study of the role of justices of the peace in national and county politics in England during the years 1473-1570. Ample documentation exists in the central government records and a rich local collection, the Loseley MSS., and the availability of similar studies for the bordering counties of Hampshire, Kent, and Sussex allows fruitful comparisons. Moreover, though the shire was pulled in many directions by overlapping political and ecclesiastical jurisdictions (e.g., shrievalty, lieutenancy, diocese) and by various regional affinities, there was in Surrey a distinct political county community, the integrity of which all of the Tudors …
Sodium Ion Transport Regulation By A Serotonin Stimulated Adenylate Cyclase System In Freshwater Mussels., John Iver Scheide
Sodium Ion Transport Regulation By A Serotonin Stimulated Adenylate Cyclase System In Freshwater Mussels., John Iver Scheide
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Freshwater bivalves increase Na influx when the mussels were injected with dibutyryl cAMP, serotonin (5-HT), or 5-HT (10('-4) M/l) was added to the bath; a response similar to a sodium depleted mussel. Serotonin stimulated Na influx kinetics (K(,m) = 0.09 mM/l and J(,max) = 4.33 (mu)eq (g dry tissue (.) hr)('-1) were similar to Na depleted mussels. Stimulated Na influx (by dibutyryl cAMP or 5-HT) was inhibited by amiloride (5 x 10('-4) M/l) and the amiloride inhibition was reversible. Serotonin also changes water balance; the 5-HT stimulated mussels gain 0.36 ml H(,2)O (g dry tissue (.) hr)('-1) above controls. Serotonin …

Relationship Between Gene Frequencies And Indices Of Physiological Stress In The Estuarine Gastropod, Thais Haemastoma., David Wendell Garton
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The relationship between individual energy budgets and genetic variability was examined in Thais haemastoma acclimated to 7.5, 20 and 35('o)/oo S at 21(DEGREES)C. Energy budgets, after the equations of Crisp (1971), were determined by measuring rates of caloric ingestion, absorption efficiencies, oxygen consumption and ammonia and primary amine excretion. Genotypes at six polymorphic loci coding for soluble enzymes, of 25 total loci assayed, were determined using starch gel electrophoresis. The polymorphic loci examined were those encoding for (alpha)-L-amino peptidase (LAP), phosphoglucomutase (PGM), glucose-6-phosophate dehydrogenase (G6PDH), a non-specific esterase (Est) and two dipeptidases (L-leucyl-L-proline and L-phenylalanyl-L-proline dipeptidases). The genetic variability observed …

Nitrification At The Rice Root., Chayong Nammuang
Nitrification At The Rice Root., Chayong Nammuang
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Nitrification at the rice root was investigated. Nitrifiers were found in the rice rhizoplane, rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere soils under flooded conditions. They were greater in the rhizoplane than in the rhizosphere soil and greatest at the heading stage of rice growth. Ammonium-sulfate or NaNO(,2) injected into the flooded soils with growing rice plants did not increase the activities of nitrifiers in the rice rhizoplane. Incubation of the flooded soil with (NH(,4))(,2)SO(,4) or NaNO(,2) did not increase the activities of NH(,4)('+)- or NO(,2)('-)-oxidizers in soils without rice. The (NH(,4))(,2)SO(,4) did not increase denitrifiers, but incubation with NaNO(,2) caused an early increase …
"New Literary History" And The Postmodern Paradigm: Implications For Theatre History., Robert Gerard Staggenborg
"New Literary History" And The Postmodern Paradigm: Implications For Theatre History., Robert Gerard Staggenborg
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Thomas S. Kuhn writes of disciplinary paradigms, presuppositions tactily setting the epistemological boundaries of a particular field or of the vision of a particular epoch. In the past decade, a paradigmatic revolution has deeply altered the western world's sense of reality. A new postmodern paradigm has emerged and evidenced itself in such critical approaches to art as semiotics, phenomenology, poststructuralism, and hermeneutics. The aim of the present study is to identify the central theoretical perspective offered by the new paradigm, to examine and define the central critico-historical principles stemming from such a perspective, and to relate these principles to the …

The Methodological Foundations Of Law And Economics., Will Carrington Heath
The Methodological Foundations Of Law And Economics., Will Carrington Heath
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Today there is a burgeoning "new" law and economics literature which extends the application of economic principles virtually across the board. The essence of the "new" law and economics is value (or wealth) maximization, which means exploiting economic resources in such a way that value--human satisfaction as measured by willingness and ability to pay--is maximized. Value maximization has become essential in both explanative and reformative analyses of the law. This new science of law is not without its critics. They include economists, especially those of the Austrian and American Institutionalist schools, as well as various legal theorists and practitioners not …
The Effects Of Acute Dehydration On The Anaerobic Threshold During Incremental Cycle Ergometer Exercise., Penelope England
The Effects Of Acute Dehydration On The Anaerobic Threshold During Incremental Cycle Ergometer Exercise., Penelope England
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Much of the previous research concerning dehydration and performance has centered around prolonged submaximal work while seemingly little attention has been focused upon short term incremental exercise. Numerous investigators have suggested that dehydration may alter carbohydrate metabolism in muscle. Theoretically, altered glycolytic flux in exercising muscle could result in a change in the rate of blood lactate (La) accumulation, and thus shift the anaerobic threshold. Anaerobic threshold (AT(,La)) has been formally defined as the oxygen uptake (V(,O(,2))) at which there is a systematic increase in blood La. Additionally, the AT(,La) has been estimated from a nonlinear increase in expired ventilation …

In oyster homogenates, the D values in minutes were 4.7 at 49(DEGREES)C, < 0.35 at 54(DEGREES)C, < 0.35 at 60(DEGREES)C, < 0.33 at 66(DEGREES)C, < 0.30 at 71(DEGREES)C, < 0.29 at 77(DEGREES)C, and < 0.24 at 82(DEGREES)C. In shrimp homogenates, the D values in minutes were 9.17 at 49(DEGREES)C, < 0.43 at 54(DEGREES)C, < 0.39 at 60(DEGREES)C, < 0.32 at 66(DEGREES)C, < 0.31 at 71(DEGREES)C, < 0.30 at 77(DEGREES), and < 0.28 at 82(DEGREES)C. Whole oysters, inoculated with 10('6) V. cholerae/gram, were cooked in boiling water (100(DEGREES)C) or in hot oil (191(DEGREES)C) for one minute. Whole shrimp, inoculated with 10('6) V. cholerae were cooked in boiling water (100(DEGREES)C) or in steam (100(DEGREES)C) for 10 minutes. Vibrio cholerae was not isolated from the cooked oysters or shrimp. Sterile and unsterile shrimp, oyster, crab, and crayfish meat homogenates were inoculated with 10('7) V. cholerae/g. The homogenates were treated with 0, 25, 50, or 100 krad and stored at 4(DEGREES), 0(DEGREES), or -8(DEGREES)C for 21 days. No V. cholerae were isolated from any of the homogenates treated with 100 krad. Vibrio cholerae was able to survive longer in the sterile oyster, crab and crayfish homogenates stored at 4(DEGREES) and 0(DEGREES)C than in the unsterile homogenates stored at the same temperatures. The organism was able to survive longer in the unsterile shrimp homogenates stored at 4(DEGREES) and 0(DEGREES)C than in the sterile homogenates stored at the same temperature. At -8(DEGREES)C, survival time was usually longer in the unsterile seafood homogenates than in the sterile seafood homogenates stored at -8(DEGREES)C. Due to the retardation of competitive inhibition the organism was usually able to survive longer in the unsterile homogenates stored at -8(DEGREES)C than in the unsterile homogenates stored at 4(DEGREES) or 0(DEGREES)C.

Metabolic control was evaluated by measurement of hemoglobin A1 (HbA1) using a minicolumn chromatographic technique. Fasting glucose (GLU), cholesterol …
Structural And Regulatory Studies On Rabbit Muscle Phosphofructokinase., Ella Lee Kelley
Structural And Regulatory Studies On Rabbit Muscle Phosphofructokinase., Ella Lee Kelley
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Rabbit muscle phosphofructokinase (EC 2.7.1.11; PFK) undergoes a time dependent lag in activity before attaining maximal catalytic velocity. This phenomenon, termed hysteresis, is evident when the enzymatic reaction is initiated with one of the substrates, fructose 6-phosphate (F 6-P). The lag is not manifested with initiation of the reaction by the other substrate, ATP, or with the enzyme. The length of the lag was found to be dependent upon enzyme concentration, pH, concentration of F 6-P, and the presence of inhibitors or activators in the incubation medium. A model is proposed which ascribes this phenomenon to a bisphosphate induced conformational …

Inflammation And Leukocyte Responses Induced By Subcutaneous Turpentine Inoculation Of Young Alligator Mississippiensis., Margarita Rosa Mateo
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Turpentine-induced skin reactions in young Alligator mississippiensis kept at 25(DEGREES)C were employed to study reptile inflammatory response. Skin lesions, harvested at intervals from 4 hours to 30 days post-inoculation exhibited no gross changes until day 24-26, when superficial skin necrosis and sloughing occurred. Early responses of congestion and dermal edema (4-8 hours) were seen by light microscopy, followed by necrosis and granulocyte migration (1-3 days). There was later predominance of monocytic cells, including vacuolated macrophages (7 days - 30 days). At 30 days post-inoculation, central dermal zones of necrotic debris were surrounded by palisades of vacuolated multinucleated giant cells and …

Equine Infectious Anemia Virus: Characterization Of Virion Polypeptides And The Biochemical Nature Of Antigenic Variation., Bharat Savailal Parekh
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The polypeptide composition of purified radioactively labeled equine infectious anemia virus (EIAV) was investigated using high-resolution sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and guanidine hydrochloride gel filtration (GHCl-GF) to catalog key biochemical properties including molecular weights, stoichiometry, isoelectric points and modifications (glycosylation or phosphorylation). The results of these studies indicate that EIAV contains four major nonglycosylated proteins (p26, pp15, p11, and p9) and two glycoproteins (gp90 and gp45), which together account for greater than 95% of the total virion protein. Four minor polypeptides (p70, p61, p30, and p23) of unknown significance were also detected reproducibly. Comparisons of the major purified …

Occupational safety continues to be a major social concern in spite of the attention which it has received over the years. While unsafe acts and behaviors have been major contributors to accidents, the attention paid to increasing safety by changing human behavior has only been sporadic. This study used an applied behavior analysis package of training, goal setting, and feedback as a behavioral approach to improving safety in an industrial setting. In addition, the effects of changing the frequency of feedback on safe behavior performance were investigated. All the employees in a plant engaged in the manufacture and repair of …
The Effect Of Zinc Nutriture On Prostaglandin Synthesis And Fatty Acid Composition In Rat Testes., Prithiva Chanmugam
The Effect Of Zinc Nutriture On Prostaglandin Synthesis And Fatty Acid Composition In Rat Testes., Prithiva Chanmugam
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
To determine if zinc affects prostaglandin synthesis in the rat testis, one group of rats was fed a zinc deficient (< 1 ppm) diet and two control groups were pair fed and ad lib fed a zinc sufficient (100 ppm) diet. The diets of half the zinc deficient and pair fed rats were supplemented with docosapentaenoic acid to determine if low levels of this acid, observed in the testes of zinc deficient rats, was responsible for some of the symptoms of zinc deficiency in the testis. In the tunica, 6-keto-PGF(,1(alpha)) and PGE(,2) levels (ng/gm) were lower in zinc deficient rats compared to controls, but there was no difference when PG concentration was expressed as ng/mg protein. In the testis parenchyma, zinc deficient rats had higher levels of PGs, probably due to increased levels of the precursor, arachidonic acid. PG synthesis was greater in tunica compared to parenchyma and in both tissues 6-keto-PGF(,1(alpha)) levels were much higher than those of PGE(,2). Decosapentaenoic acid supplementation had no effect on testis weight, PGs or sperm counts. It also had no effect on 22:5(omega)6 concentration in testes lipids implying that the level of supplementation was too low to have an effect, if any, on the testes. It was concluded that zinc affects PG levels in the testes, but only indirectly, through an effect on protein and fatty acid levels. It was also concluded that PGI(,2) was the major PG produced by the testis and that PG synthesis was an important function of the tunica.

The Use Of The Grotesque In The Plays Of Edward Bond., Ann Marie Demling
The Use Of The Grotesque In The Plays Of Edward Bond., Ann Marie Demling
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A contemporary English dramatist, Edward Bond writes plays that have often been controversial because of their use of cruelty, violence, and other forms of bizarre behavior which can be considered grotesque. The grotesque is a concept originating in the fifteenth century as a term referring to primitive artwork combining various forms to create a fanciful design. The term broadened in the eighteenth century to include literature and drama. Possessing a negative connotation, it referred to elements which were ridiculous, incongruous, absurd, or deformed. The Romanticists of the nineteenth century favored the grotesque as a valid aesthetic element which acted as …

Studies of six 8-9-month-old rams showed that the specific activities of myoinositol-1-phosphate synthase (EC 5.5.1.4) were highest in epididymal spermatozoa, intermediate in testis and lowest in epididymal tissue. The activity per spermatozoon decreased from caput to cauda. The levels of activity of myo-inositol-1-phosphate synthase in ejaculated spermatozoa from four 3-year-old rams and the seminal vesicles of two 3-year-old rams were insignificant, but in pooled Sertoli cells from the testes of young lambs, the specific activity was much lower than in epididymal spermatozoa although activity per cell was of the same order of magnitude. We conclude that epididymal spermatozoa contain a …
