The Stability Of The Dniester Moldovan Republic: A Post-Election Analysis, Oazu Nantoi, Stephen R. Bowers, Valeria Ciobanu, Marion T. Doss, Jr.

Faculty Publications and Presentations

The communists' electoral victory and the elevation of Voronin to the Presidency drew Moldova closer to the Russian Federation and raised new questions about the stability of the Dniester Moldovan Republic.

The existence of the DMR no longer serves Russian interests as it did in the past.

The prospects for confrontation between the DMR and Moldova are greater today as a result of the Communist Party victory.

While President Voronin has privately expressed his disdain for the DMR leadership, he seems willing to accept the existence of the DMR.

By the latter part of the past decade, the DMR existed …

The Moldovan Confederation Conundrum, Stephen R. Bowers, Valeria Ciobanu, Marion T. Doss, Jr.

Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Gagauz leadership has advanced several basic demands. The first category of demands relates to economic concerns and these appear to be the most fundamental. The situation that they insist be addressed in that there is an economic disparity between Gagauzia and the rest of the Moldovan Republic.

If one looks beyond the rhetoric of Comrat, Gagauz political demands are secondary to the economic ones. They demand political parties that would operate in local elections. They want more seats in the Moldovan Parliament and believe that all laws should be published in the Gagauz language as well as in Russian …

Religious Brotherhoods In Chechnya, Yavus Akhmadov, Stephen R. Bowers, Marion T. Doss, Jr.

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Sufism is one of the most important religious movements in Chechnya. It is significant because it is a popular rallying point and, to the external world, it is not obvious who is or is not a member of these clandestine brotherhoods. Sufism gives its adherents an organizational basis that is somewhat like that of the early communist party. There are twenty-seven religious movements operating in Chechnya today. Kunta Hadji is one of the most important of these and is associated with the Qadiriya brotherhood, generally regarded as the second most important of the Soviet-era brotherhoods.

Following the first Chechen war, …

Religious Brotherhoods In Chechnya, Yavus Z. Akhmadov, Stephen R. Bowers, Marion T. Doss, Jr., Valeria Ciobanu

Faculty Publications and Presentations

In 1997, Professors Stephen R. Bowers and Marion T. Doss, Jr., began an effort to promote the systematic study of the problems of political violence and eventually opened an office in the Former Soviet Union to develop research on this topic. Their operating philosophy governing was that such a base would enable them to involve local scholars in research, thus producing internationally based studies that would reflect both the U.S. and the non-U.S. perspectives. This document is the first produced by this method and is a study of the Chechen Sufi brotherhoods in Chechnya and their role in that conflict.

The War In Heaven: Michael And Messiah In Revelation 12, Leo R. Percer Dec 1999

The War In Heaven: Michael And Messiah In Revelation 12, Leo R. Percer

Faculty Dissertations

The book of Revelation is notorious for an almost chaotic diversity of interpretations, no doubt as a result of the surprising symbols like those found in other apocalypses. The book is saturated in apocalyptic symbolism, and many of the characters are not so much named as caricatured. Revelation 12, a central chapter both in location and theology, contains characters whose importance and background have been thoroughly investigated: (1) the celestial woman, (2) the dragon (Satan), and (3) the Messianic child. John throws an unexpected name into this mix of characters--the angel Michael.

This study examines the role of Michael in …

To All Nations: An Exegetical Analysis Of The Parables Of The Lord In Luke, James A. Mann Sep 1999

To All Nations: An Exegetical Analysis Of The Parables Of The Lord In Luke, James A. Mann

Faculty Dissertations

This dissertation provides students of the New Testament and missions a biblical foundation for missions as revealed in the Gospel of Luke, and especially that foundation revealed in the parables found in this gospel. The study first examines the Gospel of Luke and the theme of universal missions found within it. Next, the history and theory of parable research and interpretation are examined. From this point the parables of the double and triple traditions are compared and contrasted in order to determine if Luke reveals his theme of universal missions in these parables.

Ultimately, this study focuses on an exegetical …

Evangelical Christianity And The Philosophy Of Interreligious Dialogue, Michael S. Jones Jul 1999

Evangelical Christianity And The Philosophy Of Interreligious Dialogue, Michael S. Jones

SOR Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this essay, the author, an evangelical Christian, seeks to analyze the arguments for and against evangelical participation in interreligious dialogue. He finds that, while the arguments against evangelical participation in dialogue suggest some important boundaries for dialogue, they do not completely militate against it. Conversely, the arguments for dialogue form a persuasive case for evangelical participation

Orality In Writing: Its Cultural And Political Function In Anglophone African, African-Caribbean, And African-Canadian Poetry, Yaw Adu-Gyamfi Apr 1999

Orality In Writing: Its Cultural And Political Function In Anglophone African, African-Caribbean, And African-Canadian Poetry, Yaw Adu-Gyamfi

Faculty Dissertations

For years, critics have used Black writers' interweaving of African-derived oral textual features and European written forms to reject the concept of the Great Divide between orality and writing in literacy studies. These critics primarily see the hybridized texts of writers of African descent as a model that assists in the complex union of writing and orality. My argument is that the integrationist model is not the only way, perhaps not even the most fruitful way, to read the hybridized texts of writers of African descent. I develop a reading of Anglophone African, African-Caribbean, and African-Canadian literature that sees the …

Scripture As Word Of God: Evangelical Assumption Or Evangelical Question?, John D. Morrison Jan 1999

Scripture As Word Of God: Evangelical Assumption Or Evangelical Question?, John D. Morrison

Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)

Examines the views of D. Bloesch, G. Fackre, and C. Pinnock. Indicates their disjunctive positions introduce ontological and epistemological dualism into the doctrine of revelation. Takes Packer's view of the Bible as the Word of God written, affirming that the human languages used to reflect God's person and work are competent to do so. Finds Wolterstorff's answer to Barth and John Baillie insightful, but we must move past his views to the full-orbed acceptance of the Word of God as written to avoid negating propositional revelation.

"Through The Eye Of A Needle": The Role Of Pietistic And Mystical Thought Among The Anglican Elite In The Eighteenth Century Lowcountry South, Samuel C. Smith Jan 1999

"Through The Eye Of A Needle": The Role Of Pietistic And Mystical Thought Among The Anglican Elite In The Eighteenth Century Lowcountry South, Samuel C. Smith

Faculty Dissertations

This dissertation examines the transmission and eventual manifestation of Christian pietistic and mystical thought into the Colonial and Revolutionary lowcountry South. The facilitators of this transmission include the Continental Pietists, who were themselves heavily influenced by the mystics, and British Evangelicals such as John Wesley and George Whitefield, who, even in their public denials of mysticism, nevertheless demonstrated its strong influence in their ministries. Mystical and pietistic expressions impacted the religious, social, and political life of the lowcountry more than has been previously recognized. Evangelical Pietism's mid-eighteenth century infusion prompted some to correctly recognize its subjective (i.e. inwardly focused and …

This study seeks to contribute to the growing trend of reading the book of Jeremiah as a literary entity that possesses an editorial unity in spite of the complex compositional history that appears to stand behind the book. This study will focus primarily on the overarching plot and structure that emerge from the reading of Jeremiah 26-45. The thesis is that this section of the book of Jeremiah consists of …
