Interrelations Of Prosody, Clause Structure And Discourse Pragmatics In Tarifit Berber, Clive W. Mcclelland Aug 1996

Interrelations Of Prosody, Clause Structure And Discourse Pragmatics In Tarifit Berber, Clive W. Mcclelland

Faculty Dissertations

The interconnections that exist among prosody, clause structure, and discourse pragmatics have been noted by many linguists (e.g., Halliday 1967; Givon 1983; Longacre 1983). These interconnections have included such phenomena as pausing after a paragraph or episode, and other interconnections have concerned characteristics of certain types of discourse such as narrative in which the use of intonation indicates topic and/or focus. Still others pertain to changes in clause structure which characterize certain sections of a discourse, such as peak, where clauses may display unusual word ordering, inflection, and unique intonation (Longacre 1983). However, few of these interconnections have been studied …

An Investigation Into The Linguistic Evidence And Classification Of Dialect Variation In Biblical Hebrew, Douglas K. Wilson Apr 1996

An Investigation Into The Linguistic Evidence And Classification Of Dialect Variation In Biblical Hebrew, Douglas K. Wilson

Faculty Dissertations

The following is a study of dialectal variations in the Masoretic text and classification of selected variations. Introductory material includes discussion of the use of "dialect" for regional, chronological, and stylistic distinctives.

This study is presented in two parts. Part one presents a case for the usage of dialect variation by writers and personalities in the Hebrew Bible. Part two offers analysis of current approaches to the classification of variants into chronological, regional, and stylistic distinctives.

Part one begins with an investigation of the Torah, presenting dialectal evidence from Genesis and Deuteronomy relating to vocabulary, geography, and tribal differences. Evidence …

On Behalf Of The Fool: G.E. Moore And Our Knowledge Of The Existence Of Material Objects, Edward N. Martin Jan 1996

On Behalf Of The Fool: G.E. Moore And Our Knowledge Of The Existence Of Material Objects, Edward N. Martin

SOR Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this paper I argue that G.E. Moore’s naturalism (combined with his sense-data theory) falls prey to the charge, leveled recently by Plantinga, that Moore doesn’t know whether his belief-forming mechanisms are functioning properly when he says he knows a pencil (or his hand) exists. Help from Alston may be sought in response to criticisms, but these are not sufficient to vindicate Moore’s form of naturalism.

Francis Lieber: Émigré Scholar, Steven Alan Samson

Faculty Publications and Presentations

If Francis Lieber (1798-1872) had been a tinkerer, like Thomas Alva Edison or George Westinghouse, he might be remembered today for patenting a great variety of inventions. Yet he was an innovator in several fields. His active concerns as a political economist, scholar, and writer ranged through the industrial as well as the liberal arts. Lieber was an early advocate of an international copyright. He urged Congress to establish an office of statistics to aid scientific research. Later he took a lead in military and legal reform, drafting the first formal code of military conduct, which predated and influenced both …

An Exegetical And Theological Examination Of Matthew 5:17-20, Marc A. Clauson May 1993

An Exegetical And Theological Examination Of Matthew 5:17-20, Marc A. Clauson

Masters Theses

Recent polemics relating to the use and validity of the Mosaic Law make a reexamination of some of the key Biblical passages imperative as well as a rethinking of the basic framework by which the issue of the Law is discussed. Matthew 5:17-20 is a passage often used by all sides in the Law debate and is here analyzed as to its relevance to the Law issue. This periscope is Jesus' programmatic statement about his mission with respect to the Law. The passage clearly states that the Law is not abolished and this truism serves as the broadest interpretational framework …

Theological Implications Of The Divine Title Adonai Yahweh In Ezekiel, Peter C. Hamilton Dec 1990

Theological Implications Of The Divine Title Adonai Yahweh In Ezekiel, Peter C. Hamilton

Faculty Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation was to ascertain the theological implications of Ezekiel's frequent use of the divine title, sk50. He has the most occurrences of the divine epithet, sk25, in the Old Testament (222 out of 439), and the greatest number of sk50 forms (217 out of 301). This title is found almost exclusively in two prophetic formulas in Ezekiel's prophecy, the introductory messenger formula and the formula for a divine saying, which either introduce or highlight his prophetic oracles.

Chapter one contains an overview of the meaning of sk25 in the Old Testament, and a discussion of the …

The Comparison Of The Effects Of Three Prereading Advance Organizers On The Literal Comprehension Of Fifth-Grade Social Studies Materials, Constance L. Pearson

Faculty Dissertations

The goal of this investigation was to determine if one of three prereading advance organizers: a verbal, a graphic, or a problematic situation organizer affected the comprehension of given fifth-grade social studies reading selections. The study attempted to answer the following research questions. 1. Are the post-reading comprehension test scores following a lesson using anyone of the given prereading approaches significantly different from the lesson introduced by the control organizer? 2. Are the post-reading comprehension test scores following a lesson using anyone of the given prereading approaches significantly differently from the other two? In order to answer these questions, subjects …
