Who Believes What? Clearing Up Confusion About Intelligent Design And Young-Earth Creationism, Marcus R. Ross Jan 2005

Who Believes What? Clearing Up Confusion About Intelligent Design And Young-Earth Creationism, Marcus R. Ross

Faculty Publications and Presentations

The question of what differentiates young-Earth creationism (YEC) from Intelligent Design (ID) has resulted in inaccurate and confusing terminology, and hinders both understanding and dialogue. Though both YEC and ID groups have drawn distinctions between themselves, previous attempts to classify design-based positions on origins have been unable to adequately resolve their relationships. The Nested Hierarchy of Design, a multiple-character classification system, categorizes teleological positions according to the strength of claims regarding the reality, detectability, source, method, and timing of design, and results in an accurate and robust classification of numerous positions. This method avoids the philosophical and theological pitfalls of …

Sachu Saharu: Tru Helper. A Melodic Analysis Of Christian Music In Garhwal, North India, Laura Eilders

Masters Theses

This thesis is an ethnomusicological examination of the development of indigenous worship music in Garhwal; a region in Northern India. It focuses on a comparative aspect so as to draw conclusions regarding the elements of music that is identified as Garhwali. It includes a melodic analysis of Garhwali Christian songs written by Rajesh Dongriyal and songs recorded by young women at two Garhwali villages. The theoretical framework is based upon the need of every group of people to have music about Christ in their own language and style of music. The assumption is that this will serve as a powerful …

Intellectual Freedom And The Bible College Library, Gregory A. Smith Jul 2004

Intellectual Freedom And The Bible College Library, Gregory A. Smith

Faculty Publications and Presentations

A number of evangelical Christian authors have grappled with the subject of intellectual freedom--few, though, in the context of Bible college libraries. The secular concept of intellectual freedom is incompatible with Bible colleges in that it is absolutist and shuns any standard of morality. Theological, educational, and pragmatic factors indicate that Bible college libraries should provide access to a broad range of information resources, irrespective of the positions they espouse, except to the extent that such openness poses a serious threat to the fulfillment of their sponsoring institutions’ mission. To this end, Bible college libraries should take positive action to …

Profitability In Heterogeneity: A Comparative Study, Ben Gutierrez Apr 2004

Profitability In Heterogeneity: A Comparative Study, Ben Gutierrez

Faculty Dissertations

This study relates Hambrick and Mason’s (1984) Proposition 21 of the Upper Echelons Theory (UET) to the texts of I and II Timothy. Proposition 21 of the UET states, “In turbulent environments, team heterogeneity will be positively associated with profitability” (p. 203). This study affirms the validity of this proposition within the heterogeneous leadership context of Paul and Timothy as seen in the turbulent environment described in I and II Timothy. After defining three key terms (heterogeneity, turbulent environment, profitability) of the UET, this study provides the definitions and rationale for translating these terms into a ministry context. This study …

An Examination Of The Preaching And Teaching Style Of Jesus In Relation To Current Evangelical Homiletics, Daniel Light Apr 2004

An Examination Of The Preaching And Teaching Style Of Jesus In Relation To Current Evangelical Homiletics, Daniel Light

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Much of current evangelical pulpit ministry has veered away from the style and content demonstrated by Jesus in His preaching and teaching. The purpose of this project is to encourage pastoral preachers and teachers to prepare and practice their preaching and teaching according to the model provided by Jesus as revealed in the Gospels. Based on an examination of available literature concerning Jesus’ ministry as a communicator, and interviews with leading evangelical pastors, the project offers personal perspectives and practical advice concerning greater effectiveness in pastoral preaching and teaching by using Jesus as a model.

Barth, Barthians, And Evangelicals: Reassessing The Question Of The Relation Of Holy Scripture And The Word Of God, John D. Morrison Jan 2004

Barth, Barthians, And Evangelicals: Reassessing The Question Of The Relation Of Holy Scripture And The Word Of God, John D. Morrison

Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)

Karl Barth is often misunderstood regarding his views of Scripture, hence we must survey his "ontology of Holy Scripture" and then discuss various misinterpretations of Barth's understanding of the nature of Scripture. Such men as David Mueller, Otto Weber, Arnold Come and T. F. Torrance and Evangelicals as C. Van Til, G. H. Clark, C. F. H. Henry and Bernard Ramm are shown to be deficient in their analysis of Barth's view of Scripture, especially as regards a bifurcation of the text and the Word of God.

The Divine Council In Late Canonical And Non-Canonical Second Temple Jewish Literature, Michael Heiser Jan 2004

The Divine Council In Late Canonical And Non-Canonical Second Temple Jewish Literature, Michael Heiser

Faculty Dissertations

Biblical scholarship has reached a consensus with respect to the presence of a divine assembly of gods in Israel's faith. Prior to the sixth century B.C.E., Israelite religion underwent an evolution from an initial polytheism to a firm monolatry, where the other gods of the divine council were tolerated but not worshipped. The religious crisis of Israel's early sixth century B.C.E. exile prompted the scribes to obscure the council in the canonical texts and compose new material declaring that Yahweh had punished Israel for her sins, brought her out of bondage, and put the other gods to death. This historical …

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Isaiah 56-66, Curtis W. Fitzgerald Aug 2003

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Isaiah 56-66, Curtis W. Fitzgerald

Faculty Dissertations

This study examines the continuity and cohesiveness of the prophecies comprising Isaiah 56-66, or Third Isaiah (TI). The method used is rhetorical criticism, a discipline set forth by James Muilenburg in his address before the Society of Biblical Literature in 1968. Because of the doubts concerning the authenticity of some of the prophecies in TI, and skepticism from some scholars about an overall theme in TI, the need for studies of TI from a rhetorical perspective are warranted. Using the method initiated by Muilenburg and developed by many able scholars in recent years, this limited examination of TI from a …

Gives an analysis of the views on Scripture by such RC theologians as Karl Rahner, Raymond Brown, Avery Dulles, and Richard Swinburne. Notes the clarifications made in the New Catechism.

Establishing Recording Studios For The Purpose Of Developing Indigenous Worship For Tunisian Believers, Frank Fortunato Dec 2002

Establishing Recording Studios For The Purpose Of Developing Indigenous Worship For Tunisian Believers, Frank Fortunato

Masters Theses

Over several decades churches worldwide have focused on recovering or discovering biblical, vibrant worship. With one brilliant statement John Piper captured the current wave of worship and connected it to missions. In what has become a classic motto of the missions movement Piper reminded the Christian community that “missions exists because worship doesn’t. Missions is not the ultimate goal of the church. Worship is.” While not a new concept, these few words helped forge missions and worship into symbiotic relationship. Each morphed into the other in an ongoing continuum. The establishing of thriving, biblical churches that were also worshiping churches …

Theistic Activism And The Euthyphro Dilemma, David Baggett Jan 2002

Theistic Activism And The Euthyphro Dilemma, David Baggett

Faculty Dissertations

My dissertation focuses on the Euthyphro question, from one of the Socratic dialogues, understood in terms of the following dilemma posed against theistic ethics: (1) Either what is good/right is moral because God commands it, or it is not. (2) If what is good/right is moral because God commands it, then the good/right is arbitrary and vacuous. (3) If what is good/right is moral for reasons other than that God commands it, then God is superfluous from the standpoint of morality. (4) So, either the good/right is arbitrary and vacuous or God is superfluous to morality.

The dilemma is really …

Anatomy Of Adults' Learning Experiences, Frederick Milacci, Ian Baptiste, Kristine Lalley, Honoratha Mushi

Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this study, 4 researchers conduct phenomenological interviews to find out how adults describe their learning experiences and what meanings they attach to those descriptions. The study proposes common structural and functional features of adults' learning experiences, while noting important substantive differences between and among the participants interviewed. The study also raises questions concerning the differences between experiences in general and learning experiences in particular; between learning and performance; and it questions the meaning and validity of the construct, group learning. It also draws several implications regarding the teaching of adults. Lastly, it proposes a way to reconcile he apparent …

The Considerations Of Interpretation Through The Function Of Imagery In The Song Of Songs And Its Application To The Current Believing Community, Sanggeol Lyu May 2001

The Considerations Of Interpretation Through The Function Of Imagery In The Song Of Songs And Its Application To The Current Believing Community, Sanggeol Lyu

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The Song of Songs parallels with the synthetic method of literary criticism. This criticism places value on the text because it is literature for the believing community to maximize the celebration of delight and consummation of love within marriage and it deemphasizes the search for the hidden meaning beyond the text. Literary criticism demonstrates not only the function of the literary message but also the aesthetic effect, and is suitable and adaptable to explain and help determine the identity of today's young adults. The study focuses on the wisdom of others and how it is adapted for today. It also …
