An Investigation Of College Students’ Learning Styles In The Us And China, G. Q. Zhan, D. Moodie, Yanmin Sun, Bailing Wang

Faculty Articles

This research project explores learning styles of college students in the US and China. The Grasha-Reichmann Student Learning Style Scale, designed to measure how college students view their learning, was used as the main instrument for the current study. A total of 511 college students, 274 from the US and 237 from China, participated in this study. Results indicate that there are significant differences between the Chinese and American students in their reported learning styles, but not necessarily in the direction of conventional prediction. For example, the Chinese participants scored higher on the independent and competitive subscales than the American …

Reversal Of Gender In Ancient Egyptian Mythology: Discovering The Secrets Of Androgyny, Ashley N. Dawson Ms. Jan 2013

Reversal Of Gender In Ancient Egyptian Mythology: Discovering The Secrets Of Androgyny, Ashley N. Dawson Ms.

Oglethorpe Journal of Undergraduate Research

Historically, the Egyptian view of life after death has been examined based on its spiritual and religious merit. There are other aspects of Egyptian culture, however, that lead us to believe that gender and sexual androgyny played a massive role in their religious practices. Ancient creation myths, such as the stories of Atum’s phallic creation and the separation of Nut and Geb, hint towards a more sexually ambiguous Egypt, created by gender switching gods. In addition, the astronomy of the time pointed towards the center of the universe as being both a masculine and feminine entity; this is embodied in …

Is Smart Growth Fair Growth: Do Urban Growth Boundaries Keep Out Racial Minorities?, Elizabeth P. Ruddiman

The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology

Objective: I investigate whether urban growth boundaries (UGBs) contribute to the exclusion of racial minorities and/or have an effect on levels of racial residential segregation. Methods: I study 43 pairs of places throughout the U.S. (each pair is comprised of a place with a UGB and a place without a UGB but is otherwise similar to its partner). I use Census data and a residential segregation index from 1990 and 2000 for blacks, Hispanics, and whites. I compare changes in the number of in-migrating blacks and Hispanics to these pairs of cities as well as the amount of …

Assessing Ghana's Contemporary Tourism Development Experience, Kwaku Adutwum Boakye, Ferdinand Otibo, Foster Frempong

Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective

The re-emerging acceptance of tourism as a pathway to development has culminated in widespread adoption of the trade by many poor countries. Ghana is one such country and, over the past three decades, has sought to use tourism as means of diversifying its econ-omy. The substantial amounts invested in tourism by the government make it imperative to continually evaluate tourism performance and outcomes as a tool for socio-economic development. Yet, to date, very few studies have placed Ghana’s tourism experience un-der the spotlight. This paper focuses on how the trade has evolved into a major economic activity. It assesses the …

"Now I Know The Law": Empowerment Of Mining Communities By An Environmental Non-Government Organisation (Engo), Yaw Asamoah, Kwabena Barima Antwi, Oheneba Akyeampong, Paul Baidoo, Daniel Owusu-Koranteng

Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective

Environmental non-governmental organizations (ENGOs) became very prominent after the Rio Earth Summit in 1992 as vibrant social movements. Since then, ENGOs operat-ing at the local, regional, or global levels have been instrumental in environmental man-agement in both developed and developing countries. This study sought to investigate the performance of the Wassa Association of Communities Affected by Mining (WACAM), a local ENGO, in some selected mining communities in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipali-ty, in the Western Region of Ghana. Situated in the intepretivist research philosophy, the study employed in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and observations to collect data from some staff of WACAM, …

Rural Women's Role In The Socio-Economic Growth And Well-Being Of Ghana: A Case Study Of Women Operating Within The Informal Sector, Raphael Avornyo Jan 2013

Rural Women's Role In The Socio-Economic Growth And Well-Being Of Ghana: A Case Study Of Women Operating Within The Informal Sector, Raphael Avornyo

Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective

This paper examines women’s contributions to Ghana’s economic growth and well-being. Data for the study were collected using interviews and focus group discussions (FGDs) with women operating in the informal sector of the Twifo-Hemang-Lower Denkyira District. The main findings of the study showed that even though women con-tribute to socio-economic growth and well-being, most of them do not have adequate ac-cess to the resources needed to expand their impact. The paper recommends policies aimed at addressing women’s issues regarding the socio-economic system, so that they can create wealth and improve well-being for themselves, their children, and society at large.

Paper Moon, Teresa Bramlette Reeves, Kirstie Tepper, Jessica Stephenson Jan 2013

Paper Moon, Teresa Bramlette Reeves, Kirstie Tepper, Jessica Stephenson

Exhibition Publications

Paper Moon focused on work that, in one way or another, served as a substitute for the real thing. The emphasis of this exchange was not on artifice but rather on a sincere effort to imitate an ideal, the desire for which may be motivated by limited circumstances, need, adoration, and longing, rather than greed or irony. The show examined how these substitutes were intended to function, the nature of their appeal, and what role authenticity and our ability to “make believe” played in the proffered illusion.

The idea for this exhibition began with a documentary about teenage magicians and …

Reducing Regional Disparities With Integrated Peripheral Zones: Northern Argentina And Zicosur, Carola B. Ramon Berjano Dr Nov 2012

Reducing Regional Disparities With Integrated Peripheral Zones: Northern Argentina And Zicosur, Carola B. Ramon Berjano Dr

Journal of Emerging Knowledge on Emerging Markets

Globalisation has produced different outcomes regarding the convergence of disparities between countries and regions within integrated areas. Automatic convergence mechanisms postulated by classical economics have not always worked as predicted, as seen in the European Union (EU) experience. Further, regional policies within large integrated areas are difficult to manage given their complex planning and management. This article introduces the concept of Integrated Peripheral Zones (IPZ), defined as sub-regional integration schemes of neighbouring - and similar - economies belonging to different political units; and argues that the integration of the peripheries is crucial for successfully reducing disparities within larger areas, as …

A Case Study: Impact Of International Liberalization On The Indian Economy, Kishore G. Kulkarni, Shreesh Bhattarai

Journal of Emerging Knowledge on Emerging Markets

This paper, using the Solow growth model looks at the impact of liberalization on India’s economic growth. Additionally, using empirical data, it analyzes the patterns, processes, and characteristics of India’s economic growth. The Solow model explains the long run economic growth via the change in the Solow residuals. This paper defines the Solow residual as International trade. This paper will show that International trade and fewer regulations on exports and imports have ignited high economic growth in India. After the late 1980s, India saw an immense increase in international trade. Led by low tariff rates, India saw a hike in …

Dilemmas Of Diversification: Regional Economic Development And Business-Industrial Clusters In China And Kazakhstan, Hilda C. Eitzen Nov 2012

Dilemmas Of Diversification: Regional Economic Development And Business-Industrial Clusters In China And Kazakhstan, Hilda C. Eitzen

Journal of Emerging Knowledge on Emerging Markets

Both China and Kazakhstan have established sovereign wealth funds and financial state holding companies, where diversified asset management can move beyond Western financial markets to take multiple stakes in other emerging market businesses, including international private equity, commodities, and real estate. Faced with uncertain returns in the West, China and Kazakhstan are increasingly poised to evolve separate yet mutually cooperative investment projects to further diversify their own state portfolios away from Western capital markets. For instance, China’s financial conglomerate CITIC (China International Trust and Investment Corporation) acquired shares of Kazakhstan’s sovereign wealth fund Samruk-Kazyna. As similar projects emerge in the …

Clandestine Partnerships?: The Link Between Human Trafficking And Organized Crime In Metropolitan Atlanta, Tara M. Tripp Oct 2012

Clandestine Partnerships?: The Link Between Human Trafficking And Organized Crime In Metropolitan Atlanta, Tara M. Tripp

Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)

Since the enactment of the Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000, which directly criminalized human trafficking, research on human trafficking has significantly increased. While recent studies have analyzed trafficking legislation, characteristics of offenders and victims, and types of human trafficking rings, little data has been collected on human trafficking ties to organized crime. Therefore, this research explores human trafficking and its relationship to organized crime through an analysis of public court records. Specifically, the study includes the 20 federal human trafficking cases in metropolitan Atlanta indicted between 2000 and 2012. It was found that 80% of the 20 human trafficking …

Helicobacter Pylori Hydrogenase Accessory Protein Hypa And Urease Accessory Protein Ureg Compete With Each Other For Uree Recognition, Stéphane L. Benoit, Jonathan L. Mcmurry, Stephanie A. Hill, Robert J. Maier

Faculty Articles

Background: The gastric pathogen Helicobacter pylori relies on nickel-containing urease and hydrogenase enzymes in order to colonize the host. Incorporation of Ni2+ into urease is essential for the function of the enzyme and requires the action of several accessory proteins, including the hydrogenase accessory proteins HypA and HypB and the urease accessory proteins UreE, UreF, UreG and UreH. Methods: Optical biosensing methods (biolayer interferometry and plasmon surface resonance) were used to screen for interactions between HypA, HypB, UreE and UreG. Results: Using both methods, affinity constants were found to be 5nM and 13nM for HypA–UreE and 8μM and 14μM for …

From The Margins To The Middle: Making Room For Visual Rhetoric In The Composition Classroom, Montyne H. Morris Jul 2012

From The Margins To The Middle: Making Room For Visual Rhetoric In The Composition Classroom, Montyne H. Morris

Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)

This study examines the potential role of visuals in a first-year composition classroom. Essential theoretical questions include whether visual images have rhetorical power, and specifically, whether they can sustain an argument. If we suppose that visual images, like verbal texts, can be arranged to create or extend an argument, then the inclusion of visuals in a writing classroom becomes a question not of if but of how. Study findings and recommendations are relevant for first-year writing instructors, administrators, and others involved in the design and delivery of first-year writing programs.

Racial Disparities In Sentencing In The U.S. And Georgia, Kamal Rattray, Nicole Lee

Georgia Journal of Public Policy

Incarceration represents the ultimate use of coercive power, and in the state of Georgia, that power is being disproportionately levied upon people of color, particularly African Americans.1 According to 2011 statistics from the Georgia Department of Corrections, the total prison population statewide was approximately 53,341 inmates. The majority of that number were Blacks (33,069 inmates), followed by Whites (17,752 inmates), Hispanics (2,306 inmates) and other ethnic groups.

Technology In The Aid Of Delivering Economic Content To Teachers: Virtual Economics V. 3, John R. Swinton, Benjamin Scafidi

Faculty Articles

We examine the impact on student achievement of a face-to-face teacher workshop that also provides economics instructors with access to an electronic library of instructional and reference material for their economics classroom—Virtual Economics v. 3 (VE3), offered by the Council for Economic Education. Based on evidence using student and teacher-level administrative data from the Georgia Department of Education and controlling for students’ prior achievement in mathematics, we find evidence that the VE3 workshop experience increases student achievement in high school economics. Our difference-in-differences estimates suggest that teacher participation in the VE3 workshop increases student achievement by 0.061 standard deviations on …

Does Online Cross-Border Shopping Affect State Use Tax Liabilities?, Mikhail I. Melnik, James Alms

Faculty Articles

How does online cross-border shopping affect state use tax liabilities? We collect our own data on actual online cross-border shopping transactions from eBay.com, focusing upon a “representative” commodity classification and a “typical” day. These data allow us to examine the extent of actual online crossborder shopping by buyers, and the subsequent potential impact on state use tax liabilities of buyers. Our results indicate that online cross-border shopping is highly prevalent on eBay, with out-of-state purchases accounting for on average 94 percent of the volume of a state’s online purchase transactions. Even so, given the limited volume of eBay-based transactions relative …

Manipulation And Counter-Framing: A Content Analysis Of Media's Response To The Anti-Communist Movements In 1990 Romania, Adrian Popan

Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective

The purpose of the present article is to demonstrate the importance of counter-framing for the outcome of social movements. To do so, I focus on a particular case, namely Romanian society during the first half of 1990. The research identifies some strategies of the ruling group to create and impose their own framework and to align it with the interests of the people. It is based on content analysis of a Romanian daily newspaper faithful to the government, employing grounded theory as the method of research. The analysis highlights several relevant categories, grouped under two main subsections: creating an unfavorable …

Working with departments on campus to foster and support learning is a fundamental component of the University of Tennessee (UT) Libraries’ service philosophy. Academic libraries that have a broader view of the traditional liaison model and seek to develop unique and non-departmental relationships can raise their profile on campus (Dahl 2007, 3). An example of such a relationship, one that has provided a real life collaborative learning experience for students, is the partnership between the UT Libraries and the University of Tennessee Outdoor Progr am (UTOP) to teach orienteering.
