Scales Of Whiteness And Racial Mixing: Challenging And Confirming Racial Categories, Serin D. Houston

This paper examines personal and public portrayals of the self and family articulated by heterosexual mixed-race households living in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. It argues that an attention to scale sheds light on how mixed-race partnerships and households both reproduce a racial hierarchy and express shifting racial identities. A focus on the work of whiteness – defined here as an evaluative set of practices and processes that implicitly or explicitly legitimate a static racial hierarchy – in the confirmation of and challenges to racial categories further specifies my claims. Fifty Years Of Cultural Cannibalism: Contemporary Attitudes Towards Globalization In Ceará, Ryan Schleeter

This paper focuses on the influence of Tropicália—a Brazilian art and music movement of the 1960s and 1970s—on contemporary attitudes towards cultural globalization in Ceará, Brazil. This paper examines the influence of one Tropicalist ideal in particular, the concept of antropofagia, or cultural cannibalism. Cultural cannibalism promotes the consumption of foreign cultures with the goal of internalizing and synthesizing with local cultures, and subsequently creating something wholly original. The goal of the paper is to assess the impact of antropofagia on modern attitudes towards globalizing processes and globalized phenomena in Ceará, particularly related to music. Brand Engagement Through Branded Mobile Apps Among The “Small-Screen” Gen, Waros Ngamsiriudom, Trang Phuc Tran, Russell K. Lemken

Using the technology acceptance model, this study examines the combined impact of brand and technology on users' intention to continue using the branded app. A Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modelling with data from 454 experienced branded app users reveals two mechanisms: perceived usefulness has a favorable influence on the customer-brand connection, and perceived simplicity of use improves the customer's brand experience. Branded app interactions and experiences increase customer brand engagement, resulting in continued use. He is the author of Popular Culture, Geopolitics, and Identity (Rowman and Littlefield, 2010) and the co-editor of Mapping the End Times: American Evangelical Geopolitics and Apocalyptic Visions (Ashgate, 2010). This paper argues that the proliferation of geographical inquiry into popular culture as a prism for understanding geopolitical processes can benefit from more sustained engagement with psychoanalytic theory, particularly the work of Melanie Klein . Klein’s account of guilt and the urge to make reparation as both central to the development of conscience and profoundly unevenly distributed contributes to a critique of dominant, uneven geographies of guilt and encourages a nuanced approach to guilt’s potential ethical implications . Throughout the United States, there is a fast growing movement centered on locally produced food . Consumers, farmers, and farmers’ markets are central components of this local food movement . In this study, we examine the local food movement in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex (DFW) and use farmers’ markets to understand DFW’s developing local food system and foodsheds . In this paper, by utilizing Self-Determination Theory (SDT), we discuss possible antecedents for Person-Supervisor (PS) fit, which is important in decreasing turnover intentions of salespeople. Specifically, this is the first paper to discuss autonomy, relatedness and competence as social antecedent variables that are influential in predicting the PS fit, which is the congruence of values and goals of salespeople and sales managers, that ultimately decreases turnover intentions of salespeople. Survey results show that autonomy and relatedness are both positively related to salespeople’s perception of PS fit, and have indirect effects on turnover intention through PS fit. In this paper, we bridge fields of English as a Second Language, Bilingual, and World Language teacher education through curricular innovation in methods coursework for future Chinese language teachers. We apply a language curricularization framework to analyze theoretical, ideological, political, and contextual factors underlying connections and distinctions across disciplinary borders and to guide collaboration within a language equity lens. Our work indicates the affordances of translanguaging approaches, a multilingual turn, and critical curricular analysis in preparing critically conscious language educators.

Many cybersecurity problems are caused by human error, which is a worry in the commercial sector. Due to their attitude towards cybersecurity, many employees in the firm do not work in a way that safeguards data. This study seeks to examine employees' cybersecurity attitudes with a focus on their work experience and exposure to cybersecurity threats. Data were gathered through a survey conducted in targeted business firms located in the Klang Valley area, Malaysia. In 1834, new living quarters emerged in the Main Street District of New Iberia for the Weeks family, who were prominent white sugar cane planters that owned a fully operating plantation twenty-five miles away. With their sixteen-room home sited twenty feet above the banks of the bayou, the Weeks family earned the reputation of flamboyant community members whose wealth was accumulated through the exploitation of enslaved African Americans. Focusing on two beginner Italian courses, this study demonstrates participants’ perceptions of and engagement with social justice topics and materials in a semesterlong project. A quantitative and qualitative analysis of surveys, triangulated with interviews and artifacts, such as comments by students during lessons and in their video responses, provide us with a better understanding of students’ previous expectations, perceptions and experiences with learning Italian; their background knowledge on social justice; and their reactions to the activities implemented throughout the course. This capstone investigates how the methodologies of the humanities can inform the creation and analysis of public policy. Since the mid-twentieth century, public policy has increasingly turned away from humanistic questions and toward technical questions. The result has been a public policy regime that focuses too much on manipulable variables and not on the humans that the policies are impacting. By applying humanistic methodologies to public policy, we are more likely to appreciate the inarticulable elements of human social organization and therefore devise public policy that is less harmful and more humble.
