Critical Pedagogy And Language Acquisition: Benefiting From A Country’S Crisis To Improve Second Language Instruction, Jamile Forcelini

Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective

Education has the power to influence learners to either accept reality or critically deliberate and change it. Critical thinking is vital to empower learners and society as a whole to move from a practice of inertia to Freire’s practice of freedom as well as humanization. Change, however is only attainable if pursued with one of the most powerful social tools: Language; the most perceptible manifestation of culture and culture is our connection to the world, what unites us in society, identifies us communally, and serves us as guidance for civic conduct (Larson and Smalley, 1972). The present article aims to …

Time And Nationhood: The United States And Indigenous Nations, Frederick W. Tillman Ii

Master of Arts in American Studies Capstones

This study examines the temporal rhetoric and discourse in documents of the Indian Removal debate of the late 1820s and early 1830s. The national narratives of both the United States and Cherokee nation are found to be inherently temporal. This study analyzes four key documents of the Removal debate in the form of memorials, speeches before congress, addresses to the people of the United States, and court cases.Time is found not only to help build nations in the minds of its members, but in the case of the United States, it is also found to help maintain the colonial-nation-state and …

Hidden Black And Brown Bridges: The Mutual Influences Of Dr. Martin Luther King And Hispanic Theologian Dr. Justo González, Gabriel A. Greaves

Master of Arts in American Studies Capstones

This study discusses the significance of “grounding” social activism in religious and cross cultural dialogue using the understudied relationship between Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Latino theologian Justo González. Dr. González was the translator for King during his visit to Puerto Rico in 1965 with FOR (Fellowship of Reconciliation). González is a Cuban American Methodist who has written more than 50 books and 300 articles in the field of Hispanic theology. Additionally, González founded the first academic journal dedicated to the impact of Latino theology, known as Apuntes. This resulted in him being considered among the prominent voices …

Investigating The Ichthus (Fish) Christianity Symbol On Perceived Source Credibility Of Service Providers Under Different Service Evaluation Contexts, Jeri L. Jones, Mahmood Shandiz

Atlantic Marketing Journal

ABSTRACT

This study investigated potential consumer responses to the display of the Christian fish symbol (Ichthus) used in mock advertisements of services high in credence, experience and search attributes. Discussions from earlier research propose consumers may exhibit different reactions to Christian symbolism displayed in the marketplace and that purchase intentions and consumer perceptions of the seller may be influenced by the strength of the consumer’s religious beliefs. This study adds to previous research proposing consumers display different purchase intentions due to differing perceptions of the seller’s credibility, trustworthiness and expertise influenced by the consumers own religious beliefs which is influenced …

The Legends Of Bigfoot: Or How I Regained My Manhood, Blaine Mccarty Dec 2015

The Legends Of Bigfoot: Or How I Regained My Manhood, Blaine Mccarty

Master of Arts in American Studies Capstones

Masculinity is a culturally defined identity that exists with no single way to express it. However, the cultural politics police masculinity to appear natural and non-changing, but masculinity changes over history influenced by events and the culture from which it gets its definition. Because of this twofold influence on the identity, there is a constant struggle of the appropriate ways to express masculinity in its attempt to normalize itself by defining what is and is not masculine. This work examines how Bigfoot, the hairy fabled monster, embodies conversations about masculinity during a shift in the masculine identity in a constantly …

Support For The Inclusion Of Personal Value Preferences In Decision Support Systems, Donald L. Ariail, Janine Elyse Aronson, Richard Aukerman, Amine Khayati

Faculty Articles

We consider the important issue of including personal value preferences in decision support systems (DSS). Various personal differences have been shown to affect the acceptance, use, and effectiveness of DSS. Decision-making models offer a theoretical basis for the inclusion of various personal differences (including personal value preferences) in decision-making. Research in the field of psychology has long recognized the importance of values in both motivation and choice behavior. Other research has also found personal values to be relevant in decision-making. We posit that since personal values are important in the decision-making process, they should also be important in the support …

There are several advantages with m-banking. Several related studies have shown that m-banking and indeed SMS-based mobile banking applications have become popular in many countries in Europe and America. The phenomenon remains not widely used in many others such as Nigeria. This study identified and investigated the factors that influence academics in Nigeria to use m- banking with focus on the evaluation of SMS-based mobile banking. The research model was adopted from the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology model (UTAUT). A survey questionnaire was administered to collect data from 150 academic staff and 350 university students of …

Investigating The Ichthus (Fish) Christianity Symbol On Perceived Source Credibility Of Service Providers Under Different Service Evaluation Contexts, Jeri L. Jones, Mahmood T. Shandiz

Atlantic Marketing Association Proceedings

Combining religious practices with commercial pursuits for profit is neither a novel nor an insignificant trend (Belk, Wallendorf, and Sherry 1989; McDannell 1995). Today, marketplace use of Christian symbols in secular advertising is becoming more common, especially in certain geographic locations within the United States. Christian religion-based messages and symbols regularly appear in a wide range of advertisements. The Christian elements in these ads often include Bible verses, crosses, doves, and often, the Christian fish symbol (Ichthus). Similar Christian messages are often observed in outdoor advertising, retail store signage, product packaging, and even the daily newspaper. These examples illustrate that …

Logistics Service Provider-Client Relationship: Comparing U.S.A And Brazil, Harash Sachdev, G. Russ Merz, Paulo Fernando Pinto Barcellos, Margareth Rodrigues De Carvalho Borella

Atlantic Marketing Journal

This research compares organization structure and market-based capabilities of American and Brazilian Logistics Service Providers in their respective countries. Using the resource based view, the authors propose that a LSP’s organization structure influences its service capabilities, which in turn will influence satisfaction and performance. The results indicate that the individual models hold true in their respective countries. Autonomy enhanced LSP’s capabilities in the areas of information sharing, logistics service, and customer service in both models. Formalization improved logistics and customer services in the Brazilian case, but only logistics services in the U.S. case. Unlike the U.S. model, service capabilities did …

A Journey Of Tears: What They Don't Tell You About America, A Memoir, Nilufer Gokmen

Master of Arts in American Studies Capstones

This capstone project explores different themes ranging from bureaucracy to suburban life, from popularity of guns in the South to suburban life and metal fandom, both borrowing ideas from scholars who have done research on these subjects before as well as employing different experiences of mine as an international student, trying to survive in a country where international students are not much welcomed in practise. Comparing my own experiences with other people's experiences, especially with those who are from other Middle Eastern countries, this project aims to show how life can be hard for foreign students, and how little Americans …

A Taxonomy Of Emerging Markets, Alexander A. Assouad Feb 2015

A Taxonomy Of Emerging Markets, Alexander A. Assouad

Doctor of Business Administration Dissertations

Focusing on emerging markets is now a significant imperative for business professionals as well as strategy, management, and international business (IB) scholars. However, there are no accepted categorizations of these countries. Furthermore, major international organizations, institutions, scholars, and multinational, all approach classifying these countries from a multitude of different perspectives. Using institutional theory as a framework and drawing on research from multiple disciplines such as IB, sociology, economics, and economic geography, this dissertation proposes a framework by which a more nuanced reclassification of emerging markets into eight subgroups is considered appropriate. The application of this multidimensional and multidisciplinary approach shows …

Number 1 - Resistance Is Fruitful: Bijagos Of Guinea-Bissau, Brandon D. Lundy Feb 2015

Number 1 - Resistance Is Fruitful: Bijagos Of Guinea-Bissau, Brandon D. Lundy

Peace and Conflict Management Working Papers Series

Drawing on both ethnographic and historical accounts, this paper describes how ethnic identification patterns of belonging are fashioned out of localized, national, regional, and global processes of both engagement and protectionism. The Bijagos of Guinea-Bissau have maintained a sense of group cohesion during periods of contact, conflict, and resistance. This paper argues that the contemporary local-global interplay is fostering a new moment of rupture in time and space for the Bijagos. The Bijagos, oft footnoted in the accounts of Bissau-Guinean culture and history, are actively contributing to the social dialogue of resistance against the homogenizing effects of globalization. How do …

Knowledge Management And The Nigerian Culture – A Round Peg In A Square Hole?, Adeola Bamgboje-Ayodele, Leonie Ellis Jan 2015

Knowledge Management And The Nigerian Culture – A Round Peg In A Square Hole?, Adeola Bamgboje-Ayodele, Leonie Ellis

The African Journal of Information Systems

Knowledge Management (KM) is a key strategy which many organizations have been leveraging upon because of its potential in achieving competitive advantage. However, factors such as the national culture can impact the efficacy of this strategy. Hence, the aim of this paper is to provide insight into how Nigerian culture influences organizational culture, which in turn influences KM practices in Nigerian organizations. Based on a post-positivist stance, this research employs a descriptive survey approach for the data collection and analysis while also incorporating Hofstede’s cultural dimensions. The findings suggest that the hierarchical nature of the society in Nigeria supports centralized …

Marxist Theory Of The Media Or Theory Of The Media By Marxists? Reconciling Adorno With Other Marxist Media Theorists, Farooq Kperogi Jan 2015

Marxist Theory Of The Media Or Theory Of The Media By Marxists? Reconciling Adorno With Other Marxist Media Theorists, Farooq Kperogi

Faculty Articles

Although Marx himself did not explicitly theorize the media, his postulations and adumbrations about the dialectics of cultural and ideological mediation have provided a robust springboard for a Marxist theory of themedia. In this article, I briefly chronicle the trajectory of scholarship and research on the mass media u,sing the Marxist paradigm and coalesce the disparate corpus of broad research traditions and paradigm shifts thathave occurred within the Marxist critical tradition. I conclude by calling attention to the points of convergence between Theodor Adorno and other Marxist media theorists. I particularly show how Adorno reconciles theculturalist and political economic tendencies …

Reflective Teaching: Improving Library Instruction Through Self-Reflection, Mandi Goodsett Oct 2014

Reflective Teaching: Improving Library Instruction Through Self-Reflection, Mandi Goodsett

The Southeastern Librarian

Increasingly, the role of librarians in higher education is shifting from primarily librarian-as-expert to include librarian-as-educator (Holt, 2002). As a result, academic librarians with a wide variety of job titles are finding themselves contributing to the instructional services of their library (Hall, 2013). Even those librarians who have instruction as a principal responsibility may have little to no training or experience in instruction when they begin teaching students in one-shot or credit-bearing instruction situations. In a recent study of employer’s expectations for library instruction training, nearly 90 percent of respondents found instruction to be important to their library (Hall, 2013). …

The Immersive Medium: Art, Flow, And Video Games, Christopher M. Yalen Sep 2014

The Immersive Medium: Art, Flow, And Video Games, Christopher M. Yalen

Oglethorpe Journal of Undergraduate Research

In this article, the question of whether or not video games could be considered art is explored, as well as what this means for video games as cultural products. Using an interdisciplinary approach, I suggest that there are some games we can consider “art”, and that these games are not only different aesthetically speaking, but are also different from a media-effects standpoint. The article consists of three main sections, an aesthetic review, a content analysis, and a pilot study. In the aesthetic review, I employ different perspectives from aesthetic philosophy in order to come up with criteria for what an …

Sales Incentives And Sales Performance: The Moderating Effect Of Cultural Dimensions, Morten Brante Jun 2014

Sales Incentives And Sales Performance: The Moderating Effect Of Cultural Dimensions, Morten Brante

Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects

An increasingly globalized world requires businesses to operate across countries and cultures. Managing a business in international markets adds complexity and challenges that can lead to strategic mistakes in dealing with customers, employees and suppliers. Culture impacts many aspects of business. Proper management of culture can lead to competitive advantages. Companies use sales incentives to motivate their sales force and customers in an effort to optimize sales performance. Despite a growing interest in international sales research, few studies address the impact of culture on sales performance. This research will contribute by exploring the moderating effect of culture on sales incentives …

An Analysis Of Future Coaches’ Emerging Dispositions On Social Justice: The Wooden Effect, Brian Culp Jun 2014

An Analysis Of Future Coaches’ Emerging Dispositions On Social Justice: The Wooden Effect, Brian Culp

Faculty Articles

This qualitative study explored the extent to which an archetype presented through a non-fiction text could impact aspiring coaches’ (AC’s) dispositions regarding social justice. Forty-three aspiring coaches at a Midwestern university enrolled in a foundations class that presented issues related to inequity were studied. Analysis of student journals indicated changes in AC’s philosophies regarding social justice, an appreciation for the perspectives of underrepresented groups and emergent critical perspectives when examining sport processes. Results of the study imply that a focus on democratic education and constructivism in coaching preparation programs may be of benefit. A means by which praxis of this …

The Meaning Of Money And Possessions: A Cross-University Comparison, David J. Burns, Pola B. Gupta Apr 2014

The Meaning Of Money And Possessions: A Cross-University Comparison, David J. Burns, Pola B. Gupta

Atlantic Marketing Journal

The purpose of the paper is to examine whether students attending state universities and Jesuit universities possess different levels of love of money and materialism. Students attending marketing classes at two universities in the same region of the U.S. (one state and one Jesuit) were asked to complete a survey containing instruments to measure their love of money and their materialism. The results suggest business students attending a Jesuit university have lesser love of money than those attending a state university, but higher materialistic envy.
