Using Cross-Cultural Focus Groups As A Tool For Communication Campaign Design: An Example From Russia’S Forest Project, Eric A. Abbott, Kate Gouverniuk, Ludmila Liamets, Tatyana Ukhanova
Journal of Applied Communications
Focus groups can be a useful tool when working on a cross-cultural communication project in which the communication specialist may have a very different cultural background than that of the target audience. Ten focus groups were used as a part of a large crosscultural project to design a forest fire public awareness campaign for Russia’s Far East and Siberia. Three of the focus groups were used to gain an in-depth understanding of forest behaviors that might pose a risk for forest fires. These groups also probed what members of the target audience believe would be reasonably safe behaviors. The remaining …
An Emerging Model For A Farmer Information And Advisory Service For Russia, I. M. Mikhailenko
An Emerging Model For A Farmer Information And Advisory Service For Russia, I. M. Mikhailenko
Journal of Applied Communications
The breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991 resulted in the collapse of the centralized “command and control” agricultural information system that told farmers what to plant, when to plant it, and where to deliver the harvest. During the 1990s, a new “Farmer Information and Advisory Service” was launched as part of World Bank and other donor projects. This resulted in the creation of a number of different regional services, some connected with universities, some with agricultural administrations, and some with training institutes. These really constitute “fragments” created to suit regional needs rather than potential models for a future national …

We Make Spirit By Walking: An Application Of Kovel’S Spirituality To The Life And Work Of Committed Environmentalists, Barbara Mcdonald
Adult Education Research Conference
This paper employs Kovel’s (1991) five meditations on spirit as an analytical framework for exploring the spirituality of committed environmental activists. These meditations explicitly present spirituality as the making of spirit, that is, as bringing spirit power into one’s life through learning and doing.

Casting A Wider Net: A Critique Of The Boundaries Imposed By White Privilege In Adult Education, Elaine Manglitz, Lisa Merriweather
Casting A Wider Net: A Critique Of The Boundaries Imposed By White Privilege In Adult Education, Elaine Manglitz, Lisa Merriweather
Adult Education Research Conference
In this paper, we review and critique the literature on white privilege to identify ways the Eurocentric culture undergirds our social practices in adult education. Africentrism, an alternative to Eurocentrism, will be used as an example of how the discourse can be expanded. Finally, we will offer recommendations for the field.

Networks: An Online Journal for Teacher Research
This issue of Networks is the last in a year that has seen a tightening of constraints, both political and educational, in response to the increasing violence that has characterized relationships between nations, cultures, religions and economic classes. In education, in almost all the richer countries, there has been a tighter focus on "basic skills" and the memorization of an increasingly large body of "core knowledge", assessed through standardized tests, and a concomitant narrowing of the opportunities for student initiative, choice, and sustained investigation of questions and issues that they find personally significant. Teachers feel harried and hurried, with little …
Learning From Others: Literacy Perspectives Of Middle-School English Teachers, Cynthia A. Lassonde
Learning From Others: Literacy Perspectives Of Middle-School English Teachers, Cynthia A. Lassonde
Networks: An Online Journal for Teacher Research
At the center of this interview-based study, middle-school English teachers talk and write about their literacy development, their teaching philosophies, and their curriculum, as they reflect upon their teaching. Portraits of their perspectives of literacy emerge. Using these portraits to reflect upon teaching practices, the author suggests we can effectively examine our own educational philosophies, contributing to our efforts to become increasingly competent educators.

Neurospora Chronology 1843-2002, D D. Perkins, R H. Davis
Neurospora Chronology 1843-2002, D D. Perkins, R H. Davis
Fungal Genetics Reports
Our recent review included a timeline showing 30 significant events in the history of Neurospora (Davis and Perkins 2002, Nature Reviews Genetics 3:397-403). Many important contributions could not be included in that brief chronology because of space limitations. We present here a somewhat more complete and better documented list of noteworthy developments.
Neurospora Perithecia: The First Sighting, D D. Perkins
Neurospora Perithecia: The First Sighting, D D. Perkins
Fungal Genetics Reports
When Shear and Dodge (1927) observed perithecia in laboratory cultures of Monilia sitophila, they concluded on the basis of ascospore ornamentation that the fungus merited diagnosis as a new genus, Neurospora. Prior to this, there had been reports of perithecia and ascospores formed in nature by orange fungi that must have been Neurospora. Neurospora perithecia were not found again in nature until 1996.

Neurospora Heterokaryons Involving A Thymidine Kinase-Positive "Helper": Use In Storing Poorly Viable Strains Or Crossing Strains Of Limited Fertility, R L. Metzenberg, M Sachs
Fungal Genetics Reports
Many of the most interesting and useful strains encountered in research readily die in storage and/or are semi-sterile. If such strains are Oak Ridge-compatible, they can be carried and even crossed as heterokaryons with the sterile but vigorous strain from the Griffiths lab, am1 ad-3B cyh-1 (FGSC #4564 - Perkins, Neurospora Newsl. 31: 41-42, 1984).
