Bridging The Gap: An Integrated Approach To Facilitating Foundational Learning Of Neuroanatomy And Neurophysiology In Graduate-Level Speech-Language Pathology Coursework, Lisa A. Vinney, Jennine M.T. Harvey
Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders
The current study examined whether the integration of foundational neuroanatomy and neurophysiology content, across a pair of medically-based, disorder-specific courses (motor speech disorders and aphasia), promoted students’ abilities to describe common neurological constructs and apply them to clinical cases. Specifically, student responses to case questions were rubric-scored following their completion of five neuroanatomy and neurophysiology online modules independently and after in-class instructional augmentation of each module’s content. Students’ own perceptions of this integrated curriculum were also surveyed and coded into themes. Rubric scores, evaluating content knowledge of the brainstem, spinal cord, and the neuron, significantly improved from post-module to after …

Family engagement can take many different formats, including community events. In this study, the researchers designed an event to encourage multigenerational family involvement using STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) and DAT (developmentally appropriate theater). The study was also designed in an outside environment to encourage interactions with nature and outdoor physical activity. The researchers found that families enjoyed the event and understood the academic and social benefits of nature and arts based education. Overall, this study continues a conversation focused on the importance of engaging families in nature and art based activities.
Integrating Feminist Theory Into Myocardial Infarction Symptom Research, John R. Blakeman
Integrating Feminist Theory Into Myocardial Infarction Symptom Research, John R. Blakeman
Faculty Publications - Mennonite College of Nursing
Heart disease remains the number one killer of men and women globally, yet women have traditionally received less research attention in the cardiovascular literature, and an androcentric bias has persisted. Specifically, symptoms of myocardial infarction (MI) have been shown to be varied between men and women. Feminist standpoint theory is one perspective that researchers can use to explore the situated knowledge that women possess, given their unique experiences. This project incorporates a substantial body of literature, reviews feminist standpoint theory, and proposes three critical steps for MI symptom researchers to use as guides when conducting research. To advance the perspectives …

A Formative Evaluation Of Select Evidence-Based, Healthy Aging Programs For Seniors In East Central Illinois, Kathleen Raynor
A Formative Evaluation Of Select Evidence-Based, Healthy Aging Programs For Seniors In East Central Illinois, Kathleen Raynor
Student Research – Stevenson Center
This study serves as a formative evaluation of two evidence-based, healthy aging programs that are funded by the East Central Illinois Area Agency on Aging (ECIAAA). The first, the Chronic Disease Self-Management Program, is a six-session course designed to alleviate symptoms of chronic health issues in older adults and encourage participants to act as self-advocates in regard to their health. The second program, A Matter of Balance, attempts to reduce fear and risk factors related to falls in older adults over the course of eight sessions. The methodology of this study involves focus groups with former participants of these programs …
Does Simulation Improve Nursing Student Knowledge, Skills, And Attitudes In Identifying Delirium Superimposed On Dementia?, Sheryl A. Kelly
Does Simulation Improve Nursing Student Knowledge, Skills, And Attitudes In Identifying Delirium Superimposed On Dementia?, Sheryl A. Kelly
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is comprised of three manuscripts, to be submitted for publication, exploring the use of simulation in geriatric nursing education. The first manuscript is a literature review. Although, a number of articles exist on the use of simulation in nursing education, there is a paucity of research using simulation emphasizing the care of patients with dementia and delirium as a pedagogical strategy or those using a stringent research design.
The second manuscript provides an overview of two conceptual frameworks (National League for Nursing (NLN)/Jeffries Simulation Framework and situated cognition learning framework) and recommends merging them to guide researchers as …

Effects Of The Developmental Environment On Oxidative Damage And Antioxidants In Red-Eared Slider Turtle ( Trachemys Scripta Elegans ) Hatchlings, Lisa Allison Treidel
Effects Of The Developmental Environment On Oxidative Damage And Antioxidants In Red-Eared Slider Turtle ( Trachemys Scripta Elegans ) Hatchlings, Lisa Allison Treidel
Theses and Dissertations
Developmental environments influence many individual phenotypes. However, currently we have a limited understanding of how the developmental environment influences oxidative stress resistance phenotypes. Oxidative stress is defined as a physiological state during which the production of harmful free radicals exceeds the protective capabilities of antioxidants. Variations among adults in susceptibility to oxidative stress can have important consequences for life history strategies and fitness related traits. Our work was aimed at providing insight in to the role that the developmental environment plays on oxidative stress phenotypes in the model oviparous reptile the red-eared slider turtle (Trachemys scripta elegans). Here, we conducted …

A Qualitative Assessment Of Eating Behaviors In Adults With Autism, Samantha Barbier
A Qualitative Assessment Of Eating Behaviors In Adults With Autism, Samantha Barbier
Theses and Dissertations
Rationale: Diagnosis of autism has increased ten-fold in the last 40 years, and adults with autism remain an underrepresented population in research. Purpose: To qualitatively explore the relationship between eating behaviors and autism using a questionnaire and interviews with adults diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Methods: Four males aged 22-27 were interviewed with their mothers present and completed the Swedish Eating Assessment for Autism Spectrum Disorders (SWEAA). Interviews were analyzed through the process of open coding, and the questionnaires were analyzed to determine consistent findings between the interview and the SWEAA questionnaire. Major Findings: Participants generally recognized hunger and satiety …

Bilingual Language Assessment: Contemporary Practice Versus Recommended Practice, Graciela Arias
Bilingual Language Assessment: Contemporary Practice Versus Recommended Practice, Graciela Arias
Theses and Dissertations
Due to the increasing number of culturally and linguistically diverse students within American school systems, speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in school settings must be prepared to distinguish between typically developing bilingual students and those with language impairments. The purpose of this study was to identify current practices of school-based SLPs for bilingual language assessment and compare them to both American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) best practice guidelines, and mandates of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The study was modeled to replicate Caesar and Kohler's (2007) study to include a nationally representative sample. While the survey was opened over 400 times, …
