Preparing Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Students To Work With Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Populations: A Program Design And Student Outcomes Study, Alliete R. Alfano, Angela M. Medina, Stefanie Moore

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

Adequate service provision for culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) clients has been an issue the field of speech-language pathology (SLP) has been grappling with. At the root of this issue is a lack of professional CLD training in SLP programs and a lack of diversity among the students enrolled in these programs. The current study described the MS-SLP bilingual emphasis curriculum and recruitment practices at Florida International University (FIU). Outcomes for the MS-SLP graduates were also explored. The FIU MS-SLP program entails three dedicated courses on bilingual clientele with communication disorders across the lifespan, infusion of CLD concepts across all …

Creating A Culture Change: Sector Trainings For Dementia Friendly Communities For East Central Illinois Area Agency On Aging, Genesis Marie Buendia Aug 2021

Creating A Culture Change: Sector Trainings For Dementia Friendly Communities For East Central Illinois Area Agency On Aging, Genesis Marie Buendia

Student Research – Stevenson Center

Regarding dementia, the public usually does not have a clear understanding of what it is and what it entails. People use it interchangeably with Alzheimer’s, which is not the same; and people fear it as it is part of the aging process, which is understandable but not true. Both of these misconceptions and more can be countered by implementing a dementia-friendly community (DFC). DFCs are cities that bring together different sectors (banks, hospitals, libraries, etc.) to create a cohesive network of resources, with their employees trained to interact with and bring awareness to persons with dementia (PWDs). During my practicum …

Hearing Health Care For Individuals With Hearing Loss And Cognitive Decline: A Literature Review, Kimberly Nicholson Jul 2021

Hearing Health Care For Individuals With Hearing Loss And Cognitive Decline: A Literature Review, Kimberly Nicholson

AuD Capstone Projects - Communication Sciences and Disorders

While recent research has suggested that hearing loss is associated with cognitive decline, a direct connection between the two is not clear. With the steady increase of dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease in older adults, it is important to note that there are precautions that may be taken in order to slow the process of cognitive decline. Despite the fact that the causality between hearing loss and cognitive decline remains unclear, research in the area of treating the hearing loss has shown a positive impact on people with dementia. The aim of this literature review is to collect research regarding hearing …

A Study Of Covid-19 Mortality Under Varying Patient Frailty, Alison Sifuentes, Olcay Akman, Daniel Hrozencik Apr 2021

A Study Of Covid-19 Mortality Under Varying Patient Frailty, Alison Sifuentes, Olcay Akman, Daniel Hrozencik

Spora: A Journal of Biomathematics

For this study, we modeled the spread and mortality of COVID-19 throughout the city of Chicago. By incorporating group frailty into a classic SEIR infectious disease model, we were able to differentiate the population of Chicago by their response to COVID-19. Three age groups with different COVID-19-induced death rates were examined, and the model sought to showcase the multiplicative deviation of each age group death rate from the average disease-induced death rate. This adjustment for different death rates among age groups accounted for heterogeneity within the population, and sought to introduce a more accurate manner for modeling the spread of …

The Effect Of Dietary Fiber On Epigenetic Regulation Of Gene Expression In Hemodialysis Patients, Isabelle Strack

Theses and Dissertations

Objective: More than 2/3 of those with kidney failure use hemodialysis as a treatment option. The purpose of this pilot study is to increase the understanding of the epigenetic changes that occur in hemodialysis patients through dietary fiber intake. Design and Methods: Gene expression through epigenetic changes of dietary fiber intake and soluble fiber intake were analyzed in this cross-sectional study. Data was collected from questionnaires and blood samples (n=20). Block Dialysis Food Frequency Questionnaire was used to calculate dietary fiber intake. Blood analysis counted the top 100 most prevalent microRNAs (miRNA). Pearson r correlation was used to determine level …

Negotiating Informal And Formal Supportive Services Among Older Adults: An Analysis Of A Caring Culture At Hope Meadows, Derek Ruszkowski

Student Research – Stevenson Center

This case study examines discourses of living and volunteering at an intentional and intergenerational neighborhood in Rantoul, IL managed by a non-profit called Hope Meadows. This is accomplished through participant and non-participant observations and nine resident interviews. The research contributes to literature on community-level efforts serving to strengthen supportive relationships among neighbors by examining a population that is engaged in providing services to their fellow community residents and the non-profit organization in exchange for below-market rent. Additionally, the outcome contributes to literature on aging-in-place, sustaining volunteer programs dependent on committed residents, and challenges of an increasingly disproportionate aging population. Due …

Assistive Devices For Communication Use With The Elderly, Corrine Koepsell, Antony Joseph Jan 2019

Assistive Devices For Communication Use With The Elderly, Corrine Koepsell, Antony Joseph

AuD Capstone Projects - Communication Sciences and Disorders

Hearing loss is one of the prevalent medical conditions in older adults. Although it has been documented that hearing loss is associated with various aspects of social and physical health, hearing assistive technologies and audiologic rehabilitation have been infrequently tapped clinical solutions. Cost and user problems in background noise are two common reasons why hearing aids are underutilized by seniors, and by younger age groups as well. Alternative tools, such as assistive listening devices, may be helpful for older listeners, even though they are used less frequently than hearing aids. To identify if assistive listening devices are satisfactory, a pilot …

Effects Of Hearing Loss On General Cognitive Health And Social Auditory Lifestyle Within The Older Population, Sawyer Milam, Scott Seeman Oct 2018

Effects Of Hearing Loss On General Cognitive Health And Social Auditory Lifestyle Within The Older Population, Sawyer Milam, Scott Seeman

AuD Capstone Projects - Communication Sciences and Disorders

Hearing loss is a common medical condition associated with the elderly. Its impact on general cognitive health has been extensively studied, along with its association with social auditory lifestyle. Hearing loss has been associated with a decline in both aspects (Lin, 2011a; Wu and Bentler, 2012), however, studies involving all three of these factors have yet to be performed. Further research is needed to encompass how these three facets, when combined, affect the elderly population. A literature review of 21 articles was conducted in order to reveal how hearing loss is associated with general cognitive health and social auditory lifestyle.

Management of immunity is crucial for survival in all living organisms. While there is a large amount of research for established model organisms, such as the mouse model, much less is known about reptiles. When compared to immunity in mammals, we discover many differences such as susceptibility to certain pathogens, alteration of immune processes due to environmental temperature, the total absence of certain lymphoid organs contained in mammals, among many others. Despite this, the reptile has shown in many studies that they are worthy systems to study immunity in an evolutionary perspective and recent studies may show that they may …
