Building Community Support: A Multi-Scalar Archaeological Analysis Of Sewage Infrastructure In Central Illinois, Anastasia Leigh Ervin Mar 2024

Building Community Support: A Multi-Scalar Archaeological Analysis Of Sewage Infrastructure In Central Illinois, Anastasia Leigh Ervin

Theses and Dissertations

In the 1920s and 1930s in Central Illinois, urban areas implemented sewage infrastructure consisting of underground sewers and sanitation plants. These sanitary districts soon became an essential service provided within the community and the established infrastructure has undergone expansion and technological updates in the decades since. I use methods and concepts of landscape archaeology in combination with 1940 Census socio-economic demographics, GIS viewshed and smellshed (buffer) analysis, and visual spatial analysis to examine the case studies of three sanitary districts in Central Illinois: Bloomington-Normal, Urbana-Champaign, and Sangamon County to evaluate how these infrastructures shaped their landscapes, or sewagescapes. Sewagescapes have …

Reimagining Rural Readiness: Examining The Challenges Of The Rural Working-Class In Education, Todd Dugan

Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACT Rural students comprise nearly half of all students enrolled in public schools in the nation. With increasing amounts of students living in poverty, rural school districts are combatting many issues but with less resources than urban and suburban school districts. In addition, new Federal and state regulations continue to be enacted, sometimes to the detriment of students from rural working-class backgrounds. The research design consisted of a collection of memories from the author, who grew up in a rural working-class family and spent a career teaching and leading schools from this demographic, in an autoethnographic journal narrative format. To …

Exploring The Impacts Of Marketing Structure On Enrollment Yield In Higher Education, Mark D. Gibson Feb 2024

Exploring The Impacts Of Marketing Structure On Enrollment Yield In Higher Education, Mark D. Gibson

Theses and Dissertations

The ever-expanding role of marketing and its increasing influence on being a primary driver for colleges and universities to grow awareness and consideration, invite applications, and deliver enrollment yield is more critical and relied on than ever before. The marketing function’s rise to prominence in higher education is fueled by many external forces, including declining federal and state funding, rapid technological advances, changing student expectations, the precipitous reduction in numbers of potential college-aged students, and what this study refers to as the four C's facing higher education. These include consumerism, commoditization, commercialism, and corporatization, each with its own set of …

Multidimensional Data Visualization And Synchronization For Revealing Hidden Pandemic Information, Qi Zhang, Nikhil Maram Jan 2024

Multidimensional Data Visualization And Synchronization For Revealing Hidden Pandemic Information, Qi Zhang, Nikhil Maram

Faculty Publications - Information Technology

Visualization is integral to uncovering hidden information in data and providing users with intuitive feedback for decision-making. Data visualization is crucial for transforming complex data into actionable insights across various domains. In recent years, coronavirus disease vaccines have become increasingly available to much of the population. However, the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) often fails to consider multidimensional coronavirus pandemic data from a side-by-side perspective, limiting the ability of medical professionals and individuals to compare and interact with comprehensive data visualizations. Effectively displaying coronavirus and vaccination data collected from multiple sources is essential for interpreting pandemic transmission patterns …

Mapping And Spatial Analysis To Expand Rural Broadband Access, John C. Kostelnick, Jonathan B. Thayn, Koushik Sinha

Faculty Publications - Geography, Geology, and the Environment

High-speed broadband internet access is a critically important issue for many aspects of daily life, yet populations in rural areas are often unserved or underserved with reliable internet connectivity. Expanding broadband internet coverage in rural areas may have significant economic potential, especially since it enables precision farming which in turn increases yields, particularly for row crops such as corn and soybeans. This paper introduces methods that utilize GIS spatial analysis and remote sensing to assist in efforts to expand rural broadband access using case study counties in Illinois. Specifically, the methods presented here: (1) quantify current cropland production as well …

Negated Identities In Dominican Art Education, Felix V. Rodriguez Suero Jan 2024

Negated Identities In Dominican Art Education, Felix V. Rodriguez Suero

Faculty Publications – Art

Drawing from decolonial theories, I explore the history of art education in the Dominican Republic in the first half of the 20th century. I examine how racial hierarchies were activated in art classes in school through the romanticization of the countryside and the mystification of children’s material culture. A distorted use of rural imagery served to advance the elite’s narrative of White Dominican identity and to normalize a racial imaginary that negated the country’s African heritage. I analyze how national and global discourses that coupled modernity with Whiteness encouraged aesthetic preferences that permeated children’s visual culture and national art. I …

Considerations For Enhancing Participation And Data Accuracy In Geospatial Research In Rural Areas: Experiences With Pgis In Northern Malawi, Daniel Kpienbaareh, Isaac Luginaah, Rachel Bezner Kerr

Faculty Publications - Geography, Geology, and the Environment

Rural environments are experiencing rapid changes that must be explored to understand, enhance, and facilitate positive changes and adapt to detrimental changes. However, the information researchers can obtain about the environment to identify effective management strategies for rural resources is hindered by several factors. Participatory geospatial research presents an approach that integrates local voices to map the facts and values of rural people and represent environmental changes. Here, we draw on more than six years of participatory geospatial research in rural northern Malawi to identify and present various considerations that participatory geospatial researchers and planners should be mindful of when …

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

As library budgets are cut or remain flat, librarians asked to do more with less are considering diverse data to investigate how best to invest limited funds. The data available to librarians are extensive but they may also be contradictory. In this presentation, we contextualize findings from interviews conducted with Illinois State University faculty with institutional and collections data. Using the words of faculty members across disciplines, we highlight some of the tensions around discovery and access to scholarly literature, perceptions of urgency, and engagement with open access. The interview results--triangulated with institutional usage and cost data—suggest a variety of …

Supporting Dataset For The Influence Of Tile-Water On Groundwater Nitrate Concentrations Within A Saturated Riparian Buffer Zone, Aminat Tosin Abdulsalam, Eric Wade Peterson Jan 2024

Supporting Dataset For The Influence Of Tile-Water On Groundwater Nitrate Concentrations Within A Saturated Riparian Buffer Zone, Aminat Tosin Abdulsalam, Eric Wade Peterson

Faculty Publications - Geography, Geology, and the Environment

In the U.S. Midwest, where fertile soils with high water retention are prevalent, the installation of tile drainage networks have become a common practice to drain excess soil water, which enhances plant growth and increases crop productivity. However, tile drainage networks coupled with the use of inorganic fertilizers have significant implications on water quality, contributing to eutrophication, leading to harmful algal blooms, and resulting in hypoxic conditions in surface water bodies. To mitigate excess nutrient exports to surface water bodies, edge-of-field practices have been introduced. One such practice is the saturated riparian buffer (SRB), which utilizes a diversion system to …

Transport And Fate Of Nitrate In A Saturated Buffer Zone As Assessed With A Chloride Tracer Test, Alhassan Sahad, Eric W. Peterson Jan 2024

Transport And Fate Of Nitrate In A Saturated Buffer Zone As Assessed With A Chloride Tracer Test, Alhassan Sahad, Eric W. Peterson

Faculty Publications - Geography, Geology, and the Environment

The Upper Mississippi Basin, which includes Illinois, has highly fertile soils and experiences intensive agricultural practices. Although fertile, the soils do not drain well, resulting in the installation of tile-drainage systems. The practices of tile systems coupled with the application of nitrogen-rich fertilizers have led to the excessive export of nitrate from the agricultural fields into surface waters, contributing to eutrophication and the development of hypoxic zones in aquatic environments. Saturated riparian buffer zones (SRBs) have been proposed as a means to reduce the amount of nitrate discharged from tile-drained waters into streams. Previous works show a reduction in the …

Maps As Rhetorical Tools Of Colonial Power And Alternative Cartographies: The Americas’ Cartographic Invention, Eda Özyeşilpınar Jan 2024

Maps As Rhetorical Tools Of Colonial Power And Alternative Cartographies: The Americas’ Cartographic Invention, Eda Özyeşilpınar

Faculty Publications – English

This essay focuses on two historical maps as rhetorical artifacts: The Piri Reis Map of 1513 produced by the Turkish admiral Piri Reis in 1513, the Reis map, and the Map of the Island of Cuba and Surrounding Territories produced by the Cuban geographer, historian, and educator José María de la Torre y de la Torre in 1841, the de la Torre map. The Reis map demonstrates the colonial logic of Americas’ cartographic invention while the de la Torre Map is an alternative cartographic artifact disrupting the Reis map’s celebratory discourse and the settler-colonial legacy of the world heritage memory.

Seeking The Masculine With The Feminine: P-6 Pre-Service Teachers’ Views On Teaching About The 2020 Us Presidential Election, Tom Lucey, Xiaoying Zhao

Faculty Publications - College of Education

As democracies have deteriorated worldwide, understanding preservice teachers’ perceptions regarding teaching about the 2020 US presidential election helps teacher educators better guide them to make informed and intentional pedagogical decisions for democratic education. Through a survey study, we found that early childhood and elementary preservice social studies teachers did not express a strong degree of comfort teaching about the presidential election and were most comfortable teaching about matters of literacy and of political agreement.

Carceral Care In Kentucky: The Case Of A School Safety Plan, Kaitlyn Selman, Hannah Carson Baggett, Lakendrick Richardson

Faculty Publications - College of Education

In this case study, we analyze commentary made in school board meetings by both board members and community members over a period of five years in Jefferson County Public Schools, Kentucky, as a school safety reform around school policing took shape. We review meeting minutes, public commentary, and policy documents to illustrate how carceral ideas shaped stakeholders’ views about safety, security, and what should happen in schools regarding police and students. We conclude with abolitionist perspectives about repair and investment in communities.
