Detrital Zircon U-Pb Geochronology And Provenance Of The Eocene Claron Formation, Southern Utah, Usa, Kennedy Cull Jan 2025

Detrital Zircon U-Pb Geochronology And Provenance Of The Eocene Claron Formation, Southern Utah, Usa, Kennedy Cull

Theses and Dissertations

Three catastrophic landslides make up the recently discovered Oligocene-Miocene Marysvale Gravity Slide Complex (MGSC), those being the Markagunt (MGS), Sevier (SGS), and Black Mountains (BGS) gravity slides, in south-western Utah. These collapses are hypothesized to have been driven by the igneous inflation of the Marysvale Volcanic Field (MVF). Here I assess the pre-volcanic strata that form the floor and environs of the MVF to constrain the regional paleogeography and sediment sourcing prior to volcanism. Detrital zircon U-Pb analyses (LA-ICPMS) were conducted on sandstones and the matrix of conglomerate beds of the Eocene Claron Formation (STATS) and the overlying Oligocene Conglomerate …

Controls On Longitudinal Stream Profile Evolution In Guadalupe Mountains National Park, Samuel Schoenmann, Lisa Tranel, Eric W. Peterson, Jonathan Boyd Thayn

Faculty Publications - Geography, Geology, and the Environment

Canyons in Guadalupe Mountains National Park are excellent locations to study the discrete boundary conditions that influence longitudinal channel profile evolution including climate, tectonics, hydrology, and lithology. The Guadalupe Mountain landscape records deep earth mantle processes in combination with surficial channel erosion and incision. Knickpoints and convex segments in longitudinal river profiles document impacts of climate change, tectonics, or surface processes. This study combines field observations with an analysis of longitudinal profile slopes and residual errors to evaluate how bedrock strength can be distinguished from features created by climate change, faulting, or subsidence in Pine Springs and McKittrick Canyons within …

Spectrum Of The Lakes: Using Satellite Remote Sensing To Unveil Water Color In Minnesota's Sentinel Lakes For Water Quality Monitoring, Andrew J. Dooley, Wondwosen M. Seyoum, Catherine M. O'Reilly

Faculty Publications - Geography, Geology, and the Environment

Traditional water quality monitoring methods often face limitations of equipment costs and labor demands, requiring innovative approaches to effectively assess the ecological health of inland lakes across vast areas. This research explores the application of free, publicly available water color chromaticity analysis for midcontinent lakes in Minnesota, USA. We examined water color variations in Minnesota’s Sentinel Lakes using Landsat 8 OLI data to analyze surface reflectance samples collected from the deepest area within each lake during the late summer, corresponding to peak annual insolation and trophic activity. The median dominant visible wavelength was used to characterize water color. Results indicate …

Sulfate Sources In Groundwater From An Agricultural Area Central Illinois, Christabel I. Obi Jan 2025

Sulfate Sources In Groundwater From An Agricultural Area Central Illinois, Christabel I. Obi

Theses and Dissertations

Increasing sulfate (SO42-) concentrations in the water environment, corresponding with increases in urbanization and industrialization, are a rising global concern. Over 250 mg/L, sulfate threatens human health and ecosystems. Elevated concentrations influence carbonate rock weathering, contributing to the evolution of the global carbon cycle. Knowledge of sulfate sources, whether natural or anthropogenic, is essential for understanding sulfate transport and fate in groundwater. This study investigates SO42- origin and transport in groundwater in an area dominated by agricultural land use in Mclean County, Illinois. Specifically, we explored these questions: 1) Do sulfate concentrations change with groundwater …

Exploring Blind And Low-Vision Youth’S Digital Access Needs In School: Toward Accessible Instructional Technologies, Natalie L. Shaheen Oct 2024

Exploring Blind And Low-Vision Youth’S Digital Access Needs In School: Toward Accessible Instructional Technologies, Natalie L. Shaheen

Faculty Publications - College of Education

Blind and low-vision (BLV) youth have been excluded from technology-mediated learning in school for two decades due to the systemic inaccessibility of K-12 instructional technologies. Accessibility guidelines that address BLV youth’s needs would help schools address this systemic inequity. But such guidelines do not yet exist nor does the robust knowledgebase required to write them. Herein, I report three key findings from a mixed methods user study of BLV youth’s lived experiences learning with access technologies (AT) and instructional technologies in US schools. First, these youth participants are using a broader range of AT than youth in previous studies. Second, …

Clarifying The Welcoming Certification Process; Contrasting Two Central Illinois Communities, Ian Murphy-Pociask

Theses and Dissertations

The election and subsequent immigration policies of the Trump Administration 2016-2020 had implications for how local governments and communities responded to immigration legislation proposing tighter control of immigration enforcement in the interior United States. Executive Order 13768 authorized the hiring and training of an additional 10,000 Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers to enforce immigration policy in the interior. Among many other responses of local governments to federal immigration policies, a Georgia-based, Tennessee-founded national non-profit, Welcoming America, offers communities and local governments certification as official welcoming cities based on standardized criteria. Since 2017, Welcoming America has recognized local governments and communities …

Understanding Policy On The Move: The Workings Of School Policy And Teachers’ Emergent Positioning Through Narrative, Ryan Kerr Jun 2024

Understanding Policy On The Move: The Workings Of School Policy And Teachers’ Emergent Positioning Through Narrative, Ryan Kerr

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the ways that school policies are understood and taken up by teachers. A review of the relevant literature suggests that much school policy, even that which is explicitly designed to ameliorate inequities that exist within schools and school systems, often have an inverse effect. It is also established that teachers, for many reasons, often subvert school policies in their daily practice. Using a transliteracies framework, this study seeks to explore the intimacies of these disconnects for teachers through a close look at their narratives surrounding school policy and the ways that certain policies affect their identities. This …

From “Life As Lived” To “Life As Text”: Gendered Geographies Of Diaspora And Exile In Clément Baloup’S Vietnamese Memories, Jennifer Howell Jun 2024

From “Life As Lived” To “Life As Text”: Gendered Geographies Of Diaspora And Exile In Clément Baloup’S Vietnamese Memories, Jennifer Howell

Faculty Publications – Languages, Literatures, and Cultures

Baloup’s approach to using personal narratives in graphic novels transcends the specific realm of refugee comics or human rights campaigns, yet it faces challenges when attempting to bridge the gap between the intimate narratives of refugees and a broader commercial audience. Blurring the lines between autobiography, historiography, reportage, testimony, and docufiction, Vietnamese Memories retraces the global dimensions of the Vietnamese diaspora while engaging with the representation of transgenerational trauma in ways that reflect the diversity of the Viet Kieu experience. Transitioning from family history in the first volume to inferred advocacy in the third, Baloup’s exploration and graphic representation of …

Resonance: A Methodology And Pedagogy For Socially Just Storytelling, Helen Plevka-Jones Apr 2024

Resonance: A Methodology And Pedagogy For Socially Just Storytelling, Helen Plevka-Jones

Theses and Dissertations

Through a close analysis of Valeria Luiselli’s Lost Children Archive and a comparative analysis of the intertexts it references, this dissertation argues that literary scholars and literacy pedagogues can learn from sound studies and archival practices together to achieve more socially just reading, writing, and teaching. The novel narrates a family traveling across the United States, not only experiencing their own journey but also learning about past forced migrations upon the same land and present attempted migrations into the country. As they encounter and interact with different print, audio, and visual artifacts, the characters achieve a more inclusive and complex …

The Influence Of Tile Flow On The Transport-Fate Of Nitrate In The Vadose Zone Of A Saturated Riparian Buffer: A Case Study At The T3 Site In Mclean County, Central Illinois, Benedicta Karl Akrofi Mar 2024

The Influence Of Tile Flow On The Transport-Fate Of Nitrate In The Vadose Zone Of A Saturated Riparian Buffer: A Case Study At The T3 Site In Mclean County, Central Illinois, Benedicta Karl Akrofi

Theses and Dissertations

The Midwest states have highly fertile soils representing one of the world's most intense agricultural production areas. The agricultural lands in the Midwest, including Illinois, are drained using tiles to improve the soil conditions for high productivity. However, the discharge of the tile waters directly into streams short-circuits the soil’s role in nutrient cycling (plant uptake, denitrification, microbial immobilization) and contributes to elevated nitrate as nitrogen (NO3--N) concentrations in surface waters, causing algae blooms which impairs surface waters and degrade water quality. Most NO3--N exports from tile-drained watersheds in the Midwest occur from January to June, corresponding to periods of …

Influence Of Tile-Drainage Water On Groundwater Nitrate Concentrations: A Case Study Of A Saturated Riparian Buffer Zone, Tosin Aminat Abdulsalam Mar 2024

Influence Of Tile-Drainage Water On Groundwater Nitrate Concentrations: A Case Study Of A Saturated Riparian Buffer Zone, Tosin Aminat Abdulsalam

Theses and Dissertations

In the U.S. Midwest, where fertile soils with high water retention are prevalent, the installation of tile drainage networks have become a common practice to drain excess soil water, enhancing plant growth and increasing crop productivity. However, tile drainage networks coupled with the use of inorganic fertilizers have significant implications on water quality, contributing to eutrophication, leading to harmful algal blooms, and resulting in hypoxic conditions in surface water bodies. To mitigate excess nutrient exports to surface water bodies, edge-of-field practices have been introduced. One such practice is the saturated riparian buffer (SRB), which utilizes a diversion system to redirect …

Decoding The Past: Evolutionary History Of North American Deer Mouse Populations On The Gulf Islands, Rachel Ann Berg Mar 2024

Decoding The Past: Evolutionary History Of North American Deer Mouse Populations On The Gulf Islands, Rachel Ann Berg

Theses and Dissertations

Anthropogenic habitat fragmentation is increasing the number of small and isolated organismal populations, and the long-term effects of these recent isolations are not well understood. Small populations are at increased risk of extinction thus it is essential to identify populations that have been isolated over long time periods to use as model systems to study consequences of isolation. Besides understanding genetic consequences, isolated populations may also serve as natural systems to study morphological changes in populations that have independent evolutionary trajectories. Investigating island populations may help in the discovery of long-term isolated populations that may be experiencing morphological changes as …

Back In The Ring: A Survey Of The Communist Party Of The United States: 1956-1976, Zachary Carlson Mar 2024

Back In The Ring: A Survey Of The Communist Party Of The United States: 1956-1976, Zachary Carlson

Theses and Dissertations

The Communist Party of the United States (CPUSA) suffered greatly under McCarthyism and by 1956 was no longer considered a viable political party by contemporary historians. Therefore, contemporary historians ignore the efforts of the CPUSA after this date. Failure to engage with the CPUSA post 1956 ignores their activity and contribution to the political and social landscape of the United States during the New Left, Civil Rights Movement, and Anti-War Movement. The CPUSA remained an influential political party and organizing power during the post-McCarty years. This survey exemplifies the methods used and spaces occupied by the CPUSA that allowed them …
