Helping Students In The Heartland: Student Affairs At Rural Community Colleges, Gabe Estill
Helping Students In The Heartland: Student Affairs At Rural Community Colleges, Gabe Estill
Theses and Dissertations
In this interview study, I examine how student affairs administration (SAA) works at rural community colleges as well as how rural senior student affairs officers (SSAOs) function in their leadership roles. The study purports to understand student affairs in the context of “rurality,” or what it means to be rural. Two primary research questions guide the study. First, how do rural community colleges serve their students? Second, what qualities are needed to lead student affairs at rural community colleges? I employed a semi-structured interview approach to answer these questions, focusing on the experiences of SSAOs at rural community colleges across …
Cultivating Financial Literacy Through Secondary School Economics Education: Access To Powerful Knowledge, Emanuel Mizzi
Cultivating Financial Literacy Through Secondary School Economics Education: Access To Powerful Knowledge, Emanuel Mizzi
International Journal for Business Education
‘Powerful knowledge’ is disciplinary knowledge that when learned, empowers students to make decisions in a way that will influence their lives in a positive way (Young, 2008). In this paper, the researcher employs this construct to explore the financial literacy education arising from studying secondary school economics. It emerges from the author’s research aimed at exploring teaching and learning in secondary school Maltese economics classrooms. The underlying conceptual framework for this study is critical realism. The study design consisted of interviewing and observing 14 economics teachers, together with four focus groups interviews with students. Data were analyzed by employing thematic …

Using The Cataloguing Code Of Ethics Principles For A Retrospective Project Analysis, Angela Yon, Eric Willey
Using The Cataloguing Code Of Ethics Principles For A Retrospective Project Analysis, Angela Yon, Eric Willey
Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library
This study uses the recently released Cataloguing Code of Ethics to evaluate a project which explored how to ethically, efficiently, and accurately add demographic terms for African American authors to catalog records. By reviewing the project through the lens of these principles the authors were able to examine how their practice was ethical in some ways but could have been improved in others. This helped them identify areas of potential improvement in their current and future research and practice and explore ethical difficulties in cataloging resources with records that are used globally, especially in a linked data environment.
Say Her Name: The Narrative Afterlives Of Breonna Taylor, Tyler S. Smith
Say Her Name: The Narrative Afterlives Of Breonna Taylor, Tyler S. Smith
Theses and Dissertations
Within the growing literature and media coverage of police misconduct and brutality, Black women and girls are functionally invisible. Since the Black Lives Matter movement began the names of only two women have stood out among the Black male victims we know by name: Sandra Bland and Breonna Taylor. Here, I will explore through a Black feminist analytic framework, how the intersectionalities of gender and race contributed to a delay in awareness and accountability for the death of Breonna Taylor. This content analysis looked at the media coverage of Breonna Taylor for the one-year period (3/13/20-3/13/21) to uncover the reasons, …

Identifying Unknown Sources Of Nitrate In Two Central Illinois Watersheds, William Andrews
Identifying Unknown Sources Of Nitrate In Two Central Illinois Watersheds, William Andrews
Theses and Dissertations
Nitrate pollution is a major environment problem facing many agriculturally intensive areas around the world. In the midwestern USA, upstream tributaries to the Mississippi River via the Mackinaw and Illinois rivers, local excess nitrate can create problems with the safety of drinking water. In central Illinois, lakes, which are regulated and designated for use as municipal water supply, can periodically exceed EPA drinking water criteria for nitrogen. Lake Bloomington of the Money Creek watershed is the primary source of water for the City of Bloomington, whereas Evergreen Lake of the Six Mile Creek watershed serves as auxiliary supply. Both watersheds …

This paper analyzes a sample of community-based organizations working within the food system in the United States of America. Drawing upon original data collected through interviews with nine individuals associated with different CBOs working within the food system, this research finds that CBOs are uniquely suited to make change in their local …
Improving Model Performance Through Indirect Integration Of Human Impacts In Data-Driven Hydrologic Models, Dawit Wolday Asfaw
Improving Model Performance Through Indirect Integration Of Human Impacts In Data-Driven Hydrologic Models, Dawit Wolday Asfaw
Theses and Dissertations
Increasing water demand driven by fast-growing global population and climate change impact are threatening the groundwater resources. As a result, major aquifer systems in the world are undergoing depletion, The Central Valley aquifers is an examples. The paucity of hydrologic data, specifically groundwater pimping data contributes to model uncertainty which limits our capacity to better assess terrestrial water storage trends and manage water resources. This study aimed at improving hydrologic model performance by using multi-sourced datasets: in-situ, remote sensing, and model-based data in a highly stressed aquifer system where very limited water use or groundwater pumping data exists. Machine learning-based …

Natural Nitrate Removal In Shallow Subsurface Stream Flows, Abigail Heath
Natural Nitrate Removal In Shallow Subsurface Stream Flows, Abigail Heath
Theses and Dissertations
As agricultural growth increases across the planet, more anthropogenic nitrate from fertilizers and sewage effluent is contributed to the aquatic system, exacerbating both ecosystemand human-health issues. Nitrate is naturally processed and removed within the environment, and those processes have been observed in a segment of substrata and porewater below streams called the hyporheic zone (HZ). The interaction of stream water with groundwater can promote denitrification; however, the rate of nitrate removal within the HZ is unknown. This study determined the extent of surface water-groundwater interactions in a HZ and assessed the nitrate as nitrogen removal in this zone via monthly …

Assessing The Impact Of Regional Climate On The Sudd Wetland, Geno Salvatore Persico
Theses and Dissertations
The Sudd is the largest wetland system in Africa and one of the largest tropical wetlands in the world. Climate and human impact in this region potentially affect the influx to the Sudd and the wetland. The objective of this project was to understand the impact climate could have on the Sudd Wetland. Climate data, temperature and rainfall, were analyzed from regions upstream from the Sudd to observe how the wetland responds to variation in the climate. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) data was used to project the changes in vegetation of the wetland to see its response to …
Total Suspended Sediment And Phosphorus Transport In Response To Storm Events In An Agriculturally Dominated Watershed, Elijah John William Schukow
Total Suspended Sediment And Phosphorus Transport In Response To Storm Events In An Agriculturally Dominated Watershed, Elijah John William Schukow
Theses and Dissertations
Increased sediment introduction and transport in streams negatively impact water quality. Deleterious effects include reservoir filling, water pollution and ecological impairment. Sediment introduction and transport typically takes place during storm events. Phosphorus introduction, generally from loss of agricultural runoff and soil erosion also typically takes place during storm events. When phosphorus is applied for agricultural uses it is preferentially retained by smaller sediments. During storm events, these phosphorus rich sediments are more likely to enter the stream system. A small number of large storms can account for a large percentage of sediment and total phosphorus introduction, leading to elevated levels …
Isolating Locations Of Potential Episodes Of Cave Collapse And Their Relationship To Cave Level Development Through Major River System Incisions, Ethan William Conley
Isolating Locations Of Potential Episodes Of Cave Collapse And Their Relationship To Cave Level Development Through Major River System Incisions, Ethan William Conley
Theses and Dissertations
Karst landscapes, in which dissolution of bedrock is the dominant geomorphic process, make up 10%-20% of Earth’s land surfaces and supply between 20%-25% of the global population with drinking water. Dissolution dominates the genesis of karst systems, creating flow pathways, conduits, and caves. Cave patterns from dissolution can be influenced by regional factors, such as water table base-level fluctuations correlating to major river system incisions. During periods of negligible regional incisions, multiple cave levels may form. Despite the significant role dissolution plays in karstic genesis, physical erosional processes can enhance the formation of these karst systems and should not be …

Microplastic Concentrations In A Central Illinois Urban Stream, Caitlin Noseworthy
Geography, Geology, and the Environment
Microplastics have become an increasingly pervasive problem in many aquatic ecosystems. To date, most microplastic research has focused on marine systems as well as larger lakes and rivers. Studies conducted in the Chicago, Seine, and Danube Rivers found the mean microplastic concentrations to be: 1.94 microplastics per m3 , 30 microplastics per m3 , and 0.32 microplastics per m3 , respectively. We investigated the microplastic concentrations and types in a small urban stream and its tributaries in Bloomington, Illinois. We also considered the relationship between watershed characteristics, such as the size of watersheds, and microplastic concentrations. The area of watersheds …

Terra Nullius Or Terra Incognita? Documenting Land Use Practices In South Kensington, Philadephia, Alexander Olson
Geography, Geology, and the Environment
Greenspaces offer many environmental and social benefits for urban residents. The benefits that urban greenspaces provide improve neighborhood quality of life, and environmental justice concerns arise when they are distributed unevenly across a city’s urban fabric. In this study we analyze the distribution of formal and informal greenspaces (IGS) across the Olde and South Kensington neighborhoods of Philadelphia using high resolution aerial imagery. By using widely accessible tools like Google Earth Pro, we hope to provide a method replicable for community groups and others interested in documenting urban environmental conditions in their neighborhoods. IGS offer increased greenspace access, improving neighborhood …
