High-Risk Fertility Behaviors: Impact On Child And Risks Of Maternal Mortality In Kenya, Mercy Chepkosgei Kiprop
High-Risk Fertility Behaviors: Impact On Child And Risks Of Maternal Mortality In Kenya, Mercy Chepkosgei Kiprop
Theses and Dissertations
Rapid population increase in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) over the last several decades and limited healthcare interventions have exacerbated child and maternal mortality. The maternal mortality ratio (deaths per 100,000 live births) in Sub-Saharan Africa accounts for at least 50 percent of maternal deaths globally. In 2020 alone, 5 million children under 5 years died in Kenya. Research also points out that, tragically, many of the mothers and children died of preventable or treatable conditions. Previous research has focused on biological or socioeconomic determinants of child mortality rather than their joint influences. In this study, we investigate the premise that all …
Identifying Handsaws From Cut Marks On Bone: A Microscopic Trait Analysis, Sarah Elizabeth Patterson
Identifying Handsaws From Cut Marks On Bone: A Microscopic Trait Analysis, Sarah Elizabeth Patterson
Theses and Dissertations
A naturalistic approach in applied forensic research is paramount to reliable expert testimony. Less controlled, or natural, methods in forensic toolmark research are meant to mimic the conditions under which criminal dismemberment would occur; ensuring that the outcomes of such research are applicable in criminal cases. In a monumental study, Steve Symes (1992, Morphology of Saw Marks in Human Bone: Identification of Class Characteristics, University of Tennessee) made experimental cuts into defleshed, degreased human bone with serrated blades and found that blade set width was indicative of kerf width, although kerf width alone could not indicate blade or set type. …

Developing Qualitative Research Questions For Illinois Post-Release Prison Analysis, Kiera Eckhardt
Developing Qualitative Research Questions For Illinois Post-Release Prison Analysis, Kiera Eckhardt
Student Research – Stevenson Center
The Illinois Sentencing Policy Advisory Council (SPAC) partnered with Dr. Kathryn Bocanegra of the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) to conduct a two part research study examining the impact of long term prison sentences in Illinois state facilities. This study is unique, in that it incorporates both quantitative and qualitative methodologies in its data collection and analysis. The purpose of this report is to exemplify the process used to develop the qualitative research interview questions for the UIC study. Components of this process, including relational meetings, and recommendations provided by stakeholders in the criminal legal system for conducting post-release …

Chop Suey Habits: The State Of The American Chinese Restaurant During Covid Times, Rebecca Ma
Chop Suey Habits: The State Of The American Chinese Restaurant During Covid Times, Rebecca Ma
Theses and Dissertations
With the outbreak of COVID-19 in Spring 2020, the yellow peril has come back from its clandestine hiding spot with attention directed towards East and Southeast Asian citizens. In the ongoing debate of cleanliness and sanitization during a pandemic, the yellow peril scare has once again American Chinese restaurants. American Chinese restaurants found themselves to be the target of online abuse and loss of patronage in these uncertain times. While over half of American Chinese restaurants took the loss and shut down in March/April 2020, they still reopened to partial to full capacity sometime in 2020. American Chinese restaurant owners …
Monsters Can Do More: Teaching With Monster Studies, Colleen Karn
Monsters Can Do More: Teaching With Monster Studies, Colleen Karn
Theses and Dissertations
Monster texts have been studied through a variety of lenses—postcolonial, feminist, etc.—but I argue the most effective way to study monster texts is through a monster studies lens. This lens, which includes both monster culture and monster theory, allows for a more robust understanding of the text, notably how and why cultures and cultural texts produce and employ monsters and how those monsters and monster texts affect the cultures who consume them. Using a monster studies approach to monster texts enables monsters to do more, especially when teaching. Teaching with monster studies can foster, in students, empathy and even advocacy …
Let’S Talk About Sex ( Work ), Baby: Women College Students And Their Experiences Producing Online Sex Work, Courtney Lynn Ebersole
Let’S Talk About Sex ( Work ), Baby: Women College Students And Their Experiences Producing Online Sex Work, Courtney Lynn Ebersole
Theses and Dissertations
Young college-age women have increasingly been using online sex work as a popular avenue to raise capital. I explored the experiences of women undergraduate students who engage in self-produced sex work online. In particular, this study examines the experiences of college women who turned to the online platform, OnlyFans, a mainstream adult entertainment platform that has allowed many college women to earn an income and fund their university costs, especially during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, by posting explicit pictures and videos onto the OnlyFans platform. This study identifies interpretative narratives used by undergraduate women in the U.S. to make sense …

Class, Politics And Family Life: A Study Of Progressive Working-Class Parenting, Elise Danielle West
Class, Politics And Family Life: A Study Of Progressive Working-Class Parenting, Elise Danielle West
Theses and Dissertations
Parenting is entwined with political and social class realities, but rarely is this intersection explored. Seminal research in social reproduction theory finds that working-class parents pass on to their kids a “sense of constraint,” while middle-class parents successfully transmit class advantages that reproduce inequality (Lareau, 2011, p. 3). This research could be enriched by a political analysis that considers parents’ political ideology. On the other hand, research addressing ideological reproduction describes a model of progressive parenting that takes a stand against inequality, but it is not known how this model applies to working-class parents (Lakoff 2002). In this exploratory project, …
Omnipotence And The Psyche: On A New Psychoanalysis, Dani Park
Omnipotence And The Psyche: On A New Psychoanalysis, Dani Park
Theses and Dissertations
In the first chapter, I propose a new psychoanalytical framework in which the subject is driven by a need for omnipotence. Omnipotence, which is redefined in my framework, propels the subject to overcome the Father, or the awareness of self that arises due to psychological maturation and sophistication. I also introduce a psychological development that is defined by the entrance of the subject into different stages (Womb, Eden, Wandering), which are punctuated by events (In-the-Beginning, Fall, Death) which transition the subject into the next stage. Lastly, I introduce my own topographical model of the self in which the subject is …
Burned Beauty: Stories Of How Black Women Burn Survivors Manage Their Trauma & Recovery, Bree Mccall
Burned Beauty: Stories Of How Black Women Burn Survivors Manage Their Trauma & Recovery, Bree Mccall
Theses and Dissertations
This study focuses on an under-researched segment of the burn-survivor community, Black-women burn survivors, who tend to go unrecognized beyond the initial observation of physical scarring or disfigurement. Recent data indicates that burn survivors of color, post-injury, report less satisfaction with their appearance and lower levels of community integration when compared to white burn survivors (Mata-Greve et al. 2022). Likewise, men burn survivors fare better than women during the post-injury recovery period when it comes to navigating romantic relationships, social interactions, and work and employment opportunities (Levi et al. 2018). This topic of burn survivors at the race-gender nexus is …

Student Research - Sociology and Anthropology
This project was part of a collaborative effort between Illinois State University (via the Center for Civic Engagement) and BN Welcoming (BNW), a local non-profit organization working to make Bloomington-Normal a safe and supporting community for immigrants and refugees (BN Welcoming). Conversations between BNW and an interdisciplinary group of faculty began in Spring 2023. As part of the collaboration, Dr. Gina Hunter proposed to involve students in her Fall 2023 Anthropology 302/402 (Ethnography/Advanced Ethnographic Methods) course in a community-engaged research project to document the stories of recent immigrants to our community. In conversation with BNW, they began with the guiding …
The Interpretive And Relational Work Of Financial Innovation: A Resemblance Of Assurance In Islamic Finance, Aaron Z. Pitluck
The Interpretive And Relational Work Of Financial Innovation: A Resemblance Of Assurance In Islamic Finance, Aaron Z. Pitluck
Faculty Publications – Sociology and Anthropology
What social forces shape the trajectory of novel, moralized forms of finance such as social finance, green finance, or Islamic banking and finance? More broadly, how do agents mobilize arguments and organize each other to create any form of financial innovation? This article addresses both questions by contributing an ethnography of a novel financial innovation pseudonymously named Sukuk Illumination, an internationally traded moral alternative to a corporate bond. This article’s findings both elaborate and subsume existing functionalist and critical explanations of financial innovation. The central argument is that we can better understand what causes financial innovation and the trajectory that …
Stoic Indulgence, Gratuitous Restraint: White Feelings And Campus Art, Bert Stabler
Stoic Indulgence, Gratuitous Restraint: White Feelings And Campus Art, Bert Stabler
Faculty Publications – Art
The 2010s saw a revival of reactionary politics on college campuses, which now appear to have paved the way for contemporary right-wing culture-war talking points regarding K–12 education. Revanchist attitudes around race, as well as gender and sexuality, can be linked to White Americans’ affective attachments to ideas of historical entitlement, which can be seen both in campus responses to university art programming and in acts of student vandalism. I describe a campus gallery exhibition I organized in 2016 around the theme of White affect, and I make connections between expressions of rage, anguish, and reasonableness on the part of …
Art Evading Confinement: Abolition As Universal Design, Albert Stabler
Art Evading Confinement: Abolition As Universal Design, Albert Stabler
Faculty Publications – Art
Universal Design, initially an approach to designing barrier-free architectural spaces for disabled people, has primarily been adapted to schooling through the Universal Design for Learning framework. Contemporary abolitionism is a visionary grassroots movement to make prisons and jails obsolete, which has been brought into education discourse primarily through considering urban public schools as institutions of policing and punishment. By considering these strategies for reforming and ending confinement, respectively, this essay argues for a more expansive understanding of access in education. The argument for their compatibility in arts education is articulated first through reviewing shared aspects of these two approaches, then …

Bladelets, Blood, And Bones: Integrating Protein Residue, Lithic Use-Wear, And Faunal Data From The Moorehead Circle, Fort Ancient, Robert V. Riordan, Logan Miller, Abigail Chipps Stone
Faculty Publications – Sociology and Anthropology
Modified teeth and jaws have long been recognized as important ceremonial objects during the Middle Woodland period of eastern North America. Direct evidence for the manufacture of the objects is exceedingly rare because they are typically recovered from mortuary contexts or ceremonial caches. Here, we present multiple lines of evidence pointing to the manufacture of modified teeth and jaws at the Moorehead Circle post enclosure within the Fort Ancient Earthworks. The convergence of protein residue, lithic use-wear, and faunal data indicate that bear and likely canid bones were modified by artisans working within the Moorehead Circle. These findings add an …
Living In Ilopango’S Shadow: Using A Figurative Analysis Of Grave Goods Excavated From Ciudad Nuevo Cuscatlán In El Salvador To Investigate The Community’S Relationship To The Ilopango Volcano, Kari O'Doran
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis is to determine what can be learned about the people living near the Ilopango Volcano during the Classic period of Mesoamerican history by conducting a figurative analysis of the living subjects depicted on the ceramics and figurines excavated from the area, to determine what, if any, relationship the people there had with the volcano. I examine the frontier Mesoamerican village of Ciudad Nuevo Cuscatlán by analyzing grave goods found in the mortuary burials located in the area and determining the meaning of the figural subjects on each using established diagnostic elements from experts in the …
Scaling And Scalar Analysis As A Framework For Research On Teacher Learning, Lara J. Handsfield
Scaling And Scalar Analysis As A Framework For Research On Teacher Learning, Lara J. Handsfield
Faculty Publications - College of Education
This paper argues for scalar analysis as a framework for understanding negotiations of competing ideological demands and power relationships in teacher learning. Two illustrative examples are presented, including video data of a student teacher (Camille) attempting to integrate multimodal and digital literacy practices into their instruction, and a research interview between Lara and Camille. Drawing on research in both literacy studies and applied linguistics, the illustrative scalar analyses move beyond linguistic understandings of discourse to also include embodied discourse and materiality as central to understanding complexities of teaching and teacher learning. Implications are presented for research and practice.
Idle Hands Are The Devil's Workshop? Exploring The Connections Between Prison-Work Release Programming, Post-Release Employment And Recidivism, Ryan Maranville
Idle Hands Are The Devil's Workshop? Exploring The Connections Between Prison-Work Release Programming, Post-Release Employment And Recidivism, Ryan Maranville
Student Research – Stevenson Center
This paper focuses on evaluations of employment-based reentry programs. It begins with an overview of recidivism, touching on the both theory and empirical research framing employment as a pivotal factor in the reentry process. Next, it reviews the limited assessments of work-release programming and their findings. The final sections examine the structural factors which complicate reentry, specifically low wages and community disorganization. And identifies the benefits of incorporating qualitative methods in criminological research as it relates to evaluating programs, their impact, and tying findings to program adaptations and future implementation.

How do school leaders make sense of the mess of the regimes of the normal (Warner, 1993) when they themselves are beyond the norm? While we may be beyond the normal, we are also “awash in the flow of the everyday” (Manalansan, 2018, p. 2). Though we may resist and see ourselves as beyond the norm (Weiser et al., 2019), we are never “in a position of exteriority in relation” (Foucault, 1978, p. 95) to the norms of power. Using data from several different projects collected over the past several years, we conceptualize a new way to consider not only …
