As library budgets are cut or remain flat, librarians asked to do more with less are considering diverse data to investigate how best to invest limited funds. The data available to librarians are extensive but they may also be contradictory. In this presentation, we contextualize findings from interviews conducted with Illinois State University faculty with institutional and collections data. Using the words of faculty members across disciplines, we highlight some of the tensions around discovery and access to scholarly literature, perceptions of urgency, and engagement with open access. The interview results--triangulated with institutional usage and cost data—suggest a variety of …

Examination Of Nursing Staffs’ Perceptions Of The Covid-19 Vaccine Using The Health Belief Model, Aidan Cossio, Wilson Cobb, Addison Fugitt, Sandra Nielsen, Matthew Hesson-Mcinnis, Marilyn Prasun
Faculty Publications - Mennonite College of Nursing
Background:
The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic profoundly impacted patient care across the United States.
Objective:
To examine nursing staffs’ perceptions of the COVID-19 vaccine using the Health Belief Model (HBM) as a theoretical framework.
Methods:
A cross-sectional, anonymous, web-based survey was completed by practicing nursing staffs throughout the United States. Analyses involved descriptive and comparative statistics.
Results:
Of the 294 nursing staff who completed surveys, 50% were between 18 and 37 years of age, and 73.1% were registered nurses, with 49.3% employed in a hospital setting. Nursing staff reported their primary reason for vaccination was concern for others (mean: 84.44; SD: …
A Bioarchaeological Overview Of The Late Woodland Period Gooden Mound Group, Fulton County, Illinois, Aaron M. Durchholz
A Bioarchaeological Overview Of The Late Woodland Period Gooden Mound Group, Fulton County, Illinois, Aaron M. Durchholz
Theses and Dissertations
Extensive research in paleopathology has documented adverse effects accompanying a shift in subsistence strategy from largely nomadic, hunting and gathering lifestyles to those of more sedentary, agrarian systems. Comparative assessment of the human skeletal remains of early foragers and later farmers recovered from archaeological sites around the world have consistently demonstrated a decrease in average age at death in the latter.
Across the pre-Columbian North American Midwest, the transitional period between the Late Woodland and Mississippian periods, sometimes referred to as the terminal or Mississippian Acculturated Late Woodland, portended establishment of semi-permanent to permanent hamlets, increasingly reliant upon the adoption …

An Exploration Of Menopause: Young People's Perceptions Of Women In Menopause (Study 1) And Menopausal Women's Self-Reports Of Their Experiences (Study 2), Fiona Therese Fleming
Theses and Dissertations
Menopause is a transitional phase in a woman’s life, and society is filled with negative stereotypes of women in menopause. Menopause is a difficult period for many women due to hormonal fluctuations, changes in their bodies, and various other health effects. The negative stereotypes of menopause in the media can cause the general public to hold negative perceptions regarding menopausal women (Gannon and Stevens 1998). The purpose of my two-part study was to extend prior research surrounding perceptions of menopause and look specifically at young people’s perceptions of women in menopause, as well as women’s experiences with menopause.

The Community Opportunity Alliance is a national nonprofit organization that serves as a field builder for the wider community development field. They are laser-focused on building strong communities through shared resources, collaboration, and a network of stakeholders working together to improve the lives of people and the communities where they live. This capstone project intends to demonstrate how program development that incorporates a trauma-informed approach using anthropological methodology leads to improved outcomes for individuals served by nonprofits at the state and local levels. The work outlined reflects the experiences of an intern in the Stevenson Center’s Applied Community and Economic …
Female Genital Cutting In Elgeyo-Marakwet County, Kenya: A Qualitative Interview Study, Melon Jepchumba Tanui
Female Genital Cutting In Elgeyo-Marakwet County, Kenya: A Qualitative Interview Study, Melon Jepchumba Tanui
Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative case study focuses on women from Elgeyo-Marakwet county in Kenya, several of whom have undergone what has come to be referred to by the Western world as “female genital mutilation” (FGM). This procedure “involves the partial or total removal of the external female genitalia” or inflicting any other damaging injury on “the female genital organs for non-medical reasons” (WHO 2022: para. 1). The residents of this county are Kalenjin speakers of Keiyo and Marakwet sub-dialects. The ceremonial process, which lasts from days to a month, is called Tumdop Tibiik, meaning the initiation of girls. (For definitions of Kalenjin …

Created Stepping-Stone Configurations Depend On Task Constraints, Jeffrey B. Wagman, Maisha Tahsin Orthy, Amy M. Jeschke, Tyler Duffrin
Faculty Publications – Psychology
Previous studies have shown that choices about how to configure stepping-stones to be used as playground or exercise equipment reflect a person’s action capabilities. In two experiments, we investigated whether choices about how to configure stepping-stones to be used as a path for locomotion additionally reflect the goals for which or the constraints under which the path is to be used. In Experiment 1, participants created stepping-stone configurations (with rubber mats) that would allow them to cross a given space quickly, comfortably, or carefully. Configurations in the “Quickly” condition consisted of fewer mats, and longer mean (linear) distances between mats, …
Expanded Transference: A Humanities Perspective On The Generative Core Of Ernest Becker's Theory Of Human Nature, Daniel Liechty, Jerry Piven
Expanded Transference: A Humanities Perspective On The Generative Core Of Ernest Becker's Theory Of Human Nature, Daniel Liechty, Jerry Piven
Faculty Publications - Social Work
The death anxiety thesis is widely considered to be Ernest Becker’s primary contribution to social theory and is associated with his most widely read book, The Denial of Death (1973). This essay suggests Becker is understood in a more sophisticated and nuanced way when his death anxiety thesis is situated in the context of his earlier work in the humanities and social sciences. The death anxiety thesis itself is one component of a much broader theoretical conceptualization of expanded transference, a constant thread through all of Becker’s writings from his doctoral dissertation through his final posthumously published works. Furthermore, the …

Loosely Defined: Neoliberalism, Democracy, And Discursive Contestation In Post-Brown Education Reform, Laura E. Kalmes
Loosely Defined: Neoliberalism, Democracy, And Discursive Contestation In Post-Brown Education Reform, Laura E. Kalmes
Faculty Publications - College of Education
This critical policy analysis examines how U.S. education reform in the post-Brown v.Board of Education era co-opted civil rights language to advance neoliberal and White supremacist agendas. By tracing the evolution of key terms like equality, freedom, and choice in influential policy texts from 1954 to 1965, the paper illuminates discursive strategies used to naturalize market-based reforms and deflect attention from structural racism. While focused on the U.S. context, the analysis has broad international relevance, as similar processes of rearticulating civil rights language to serve neoliberal ends can be observed in education reforms globally. The analytical framework developed here can …
Uplifting The Voices Of Asian American Parents Through An Online Family Book Club: Elicited And Silenced Cultural Knowledge, Ling Hao
Faculty Publications - College of Education
This ethnographic case study explores how parents participating in reading experiences influenced children's responses to culturally relevant texts. I focus on six Chinese American families who participated in an online family book club. The children were between the ages of four and six and spoke both English and Chinese Mandarin. In each session, the families listened to an interactive read-aloud, participated in a family book discussion after reading, and shared a question/connection with the group. The data included transcribed video-recordings, transcripts of the family's book discussions, and transcripts of interviews conducted with the families. These data were analyzed using Nexus …

A Case For The Negotiation Of Agency By Disenfranchised Subjects In Contemporary Nigerian Literature, Chinelo Eneh
A Case For The Negotiation Of Agency By Disenfranchised Subjects In Contemporary Nigerian Literature, Chinelo Eneh
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis diverges from conventional narratives that predominantly focus on the challenges faced by women and children in Nigeria, particularly in the aftermath of colonial rule. While existing scholarship tends to underscore the myriad difficulties and constraints experienced by these individuals, this study takes a departure from such well-trodden paths. Instead, it endeavors to bring to the forefront the endeavors undertaken by these subjects to assert a measure of agency and autonomy, specifically during two tumultuous periods in Nigeria's history. Through a focused examination of Chimamanda Adichie's "Half of A Yellow Sun" and Adaobi Nwaubani's "Buried Beneath the Baobab Tree," …

Student Learning And Literacy Practices When Video Games Are Incorporated Into A Secondary Classroom, Amy Smith
Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative study explored high school students’ engagement with a unit where video games and video game materials were incorporated into an English Language Arts classroom. Over several weeks, students engaged with video game content and composed their own video games using the free online platform, Scratch. The purpose of the study was to examine students’ learning during the unit, focusing on students’ products, individual interviews, and whole class and small group discussions. The research questions were: 1. What can be learned about secondary students' learning and literacy practices when video games as a text are incorporated into the secondary …
Asian Americans, Latinos, And The Hana Center: Solidarity Through Community Organization In Northeastern Chicago, Janeth Montenegro Marquez
Asian Americans, Latinos, And The Hana Center: Solidarity Through Community Organization In Northeastern Chicago, Janeth Montenegro Marquez
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines how the history of exclusionary immigration laws against Chinese immigrants affected later immigration laws aimed at both new Asian and Latin Americans immigrants, with a focus on undocumented individuals from both geographic areas in the United States. The HANA Center, a Korean American nonprofit and immigration welcome center, located in Chicago, brings undocumented Asian Americans and Latinos together by creating an environment where the two can work together in their shared fight for immigration reform. Undocumented Latino voices are prominent in discourse around undocumentation in the United States, but undocumented Asian Americans are an equally important and …

The Social Construction Of Sex Trafficking Among Three Agencies Seeking To Address The Problem, Alexis Lange
The Social Construction Of Sex Trafficking Among Three Agencies Seeking To Address The Problem, Alexis Lange
Theses and Dissertations
Since 2000, there has been a growing interest in human trafficking by researchers, governments, organizations, law enforcement, and the general public. One form of human trafficking that has captured the most interest and awareness is sex trafficking. However, despite the growing research and understanding of the problem, there is no shared, collective understanding and definition of sex trafficking. Various constructions and approaches have made it challenging to prevent sex trafficking, protect victims, and prosecute traffickers. For this research, I will take a social constructionist/social problems perspective by interviewing three agencies about how they identify, define, frame, and approach to the …
The Purpose Of Education: Dewey And Maritain Re-Visited, Tony Shannon
The Purpose Of Education: Dewey And Maritain Re-Visited, Tony Shannon
International Journal for Business Education
This paper touches on the views of John Dewey and Jacques Maritain on the purpose of the process of formal education, particularly its social dimension in relation to the environment, which for Dewey means “those conditions that promote or hinder, stimulate or inhibit, the characteristic activities of a living being”. Dewey is concerned with communication and the conditions of growth of the child from every point of view. He was very opposed to those who see education as preparation for something else: he focused on what he saw as the existential needs of the student. Some of Dewey’s views are …
All That Is Cyber Melts Into Control: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Cybernetic Metaphors, Cem İsmail Addemir
All That Is Cyber Melts Into Control: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Cybernetic Metaphors, Cem İsmail Addemir
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis historicizes and interprets the logic of cybernetics as a communication technology and how it shaped notions of control in the mid-20th century. To situate my analysis, I focus on cybernetics, the tradition within communication studies that focuses on controlling communication through the application of feedback loops to a particular system. Since the discovery and popularization of cybernetics by the late 1950s, its central logic has been widely applied to computational technology and influenced future systems theories. Specifically, my thesis employs a rhetorical examination of cybernetic metaphors through metaphor criticism to trace the genealogy of cybernetic discourses that I …
You Ca N’T Police Your Way Out Of These Problems: Disregarding The Structural Components Of Community Problems, Kian Spencer Gaines
You Ca N’T Police Your Way Out Of These Problems: Disregarding The Structural Components Of Community Problems, Kian Spencer Gaines
Theses and Dissertations
Community-Oriented Policing Services (COPS) emerged in response to longstanding criticisms revolving around police accountability and effectiveness. It emphasizes civilian participation in crime-prevention and problem-solving efforts to build trust between the police and minoritized communities with whom they have had an antagonistic relationship. Traditional policing is reactive in nature, with officers acting only after crime has been committed or a call for service has been made; it enforces the law; “legitimizes” use of violence; and emulates military structure and tactics. In this study I describe it as “enforcement” or “crime-fighting policing.” COPS programs are embedded within this structure. Unlike traditional policing, …
Illustrating Postcolonial Margins: Locating Experimental, Collaborative, Indian Graphic Narratives In The Twenty-First Century, Sayanti Mondal
Illustrating Postcolonial Margins: Locating Experimental, Collaborative, Indian Graphic Narratives In The Twenty-First Century, Sayanti Mondal
Theses and Dissertations
This interdisciplinary research project reassesses the genre of postcolonial Indian graphic narratives through a case study of an independent publisher in South India, Tara Books. Following a sociocultural and materialist approach to literary and cultural studies and drawing from scholarship in postcolonial studies, graphic narrative studies, and museology, the study analyzes the important contributions of postcolonial Anglophone graphic narratives in the twenty-first century. Specifically, through this project, I examine the unique ways subaltern subjects construct and take charge of their narratives to create and curate an alternate space for binary cultures to interact, partner, co-construct, and share histories and stories. …
Non-Zero Sum Sport: Pickleball And The Theory Of Coopetition, Max Arthur Manthou
Non-Zero Sum Sport: Pickleball And The Theory Of Coopetition, Max Arthur Manthou
Theses and Dissertations
An ethnography of the sport of pickleball was conducted over a span of 7 months in the United States. Findings are partly the result of the author’s journey from playing in the park to playing in the Pros—presented in autoethnographic terms—and partly the result of 11 semi-structured interviews with 13 avid pickleball players. The main contention of this study is that sport is non-zero sum, despite a tendency for sport to be considered in zero sum terms. The non-zero sum aspect of sport is argued to be the result of two main causes: one, sport is coopetive, in that it …
