Reports and White Papers - Milner Library

Archival and manuscript materials record human experience; they document how people have lived, worked, interacted, and thought about the world. These unique or rare materials make visible the experience and impact of individuals and organizations within their respective cultural, geographical, historical, local, and educational milieu. By exploring such documents and objects, patrons can see and investigate these relationships firsthand. Primary sources form the bedrock of humanistic research, personal inquiry, and engaged teaching. With this volume, we invite you to explore the unique and rare materials housed in Milner Library’s Special Collections and Dr. Jo Ann Rayfield University Archives as well …

Exploring Faculty Perspectives On Open Access At A Medium-Sized, American Doctoral University, Rachel E. Scott, Julie Murphy, Cassie Thayer-Styes, Chad E. Buckley, Anne Shelley

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

Faculty hold widely varying perspectives on the benefits and challenges afforded by open access (OA) publishing. In the United States, conversations on OA models and strategy have been dominated by scholars affiliated with Carnegie R1 institutions. This article reports findings from interviews conducted with faculty at a Carnegie R2 institution, highlighting disciplinary and individual perspectives on the high costs and rich rewards afforded by OA. The results reiterate the persistence of a high degree of skepticism regarding the quality of peer review and business models associated with OA publishing. By exploring scholars’ perceptions of and experiences with OA publishing and …

AfriArch is an archaeological and paleoenvironmental data community designed to integrate datasets related to human-environmental interactions in Holocene Africa. Here we present a dataset of bioarchaeological stable isotope (C/N/O) and radiocarbon measurements from African archaeological sites spanning the Holocene. Modern measurements, when reported together with archaeological data in original publications, are also included. The dataset consists of 5568 entries and covers the entirety of Africa, though most isotopic research has been concentrated in southern Africa. The AfriArch isotopic dataset can be used in paleodietary, paleodemography, paleoclimatic, and paleoenvironmental studies. It can also be employed to highlight data gaps across space …

Cultural Exchange: Defining The Native American And African Slave Interaction At Rich Neck Plantation, Theartis R. Butler Oct 2022

Cultural Exchange: Defining The Native American And African Slave Interaction At Rich Neck Plantation, Theartis R. Butler

Theses and Dissertations

Surprisingly few studies of the history of American slavery have investigated the interconnectedness of Native Americans and Africans and African Americans. We now know Native Americans were instrumental in helping the first trans-Atlantic colonizers settle in the Americas. However, history shows that this alliance did not last, and settlers took Native American lands. While settlers dispossessed Indigenous peoples, they also shifted the sources of labor for their new plantations on unceded land. Native Americans were the first source of cheap, coerced labor. American slavery eventually brought Africans from their homes to the early American colonies. Africans had to learn and …

Steps Towards Liberation For Low-Income Black Residents Through Anti-Racist And Counter-Racial Capitalist Community Development Practices, Natasha Moodie Oct 2022

Steps Towards Liberation For Low-Income Black Residents Through Anti-Racist And Counter-Racial Capitalist Community Development Practices, Natasha Moodie

Theses and Dissertations

Racial capitalism has historically and systematically disenfranchised Black residents in the United States of America. Racial capitalism perpetuates the racial wealth gap and continues to inhibit Black residents from accumulating wealth. I argue that the community development field must implement practices that address the disenfranchisement of Black residents by the systems of racial capitalism. This research aims to highlight community development processes and practices that counter the effects of racial capitalism on low-income Black residents. I conducted a case study on the City and County of San Francisco due to their anti-racist approach to housing and community development, specifically focusing …

Digital Archival Literacy In The Classroom, Rebecca Fitzsimmons, Elliott Kuecker Aug 2022

Digital Archival Literacy In The Classroom, Rebecca Fitzsimmons, Elliott Kuecker

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

Archival literacy has become a popular mode of literacy in the last ten years, given that archival research is not the exclusive purview of historians. Given the amount of open collections and exhibits, the possibility of teaching archival literacy skills is more accessible than ever. Importantly, archival literacy asks us to critically read against the common narrative that archival objects are pure evidence and archivists are neutral agents. Our presentation describes the importance of digital archival literacy and provides examples of implementation in classes, ad hoc workshops, and community engagement. We emphasize that all knowledge is a synthesis of various …

This study investigates how Latinx undergraduate college students at Illinois State University who were enrolled in the spring 2020 semester experienced the transition to online learning after the onset of the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic. It explores how they were affected by the pandemic and how they coped with it in the aftermath of college closures and movement to online learning. Qualitative data and methods were utilized through a series of 10 interviews collected in a snowball sample with various starting points. Broadly, it was found that the pandemic affected the students’ learning and college experiences greatly. There is much already …

Freedom With Contingencies: Obstacles To Life After Prison, Megan Lowe Apr 2022

Freedom With Contingencies: Obstacles To Life After Prison, Megan Lowe

University Research Symposium Posters and Abstracts

We all have conceptions of life in prison, but what do inmates experience when they return to society after serving their sentence? Former prisoners face a myriad of obstacles which stand between them and truly returning to life outside of prison. They lack what they had before incarceration. Familial relations, social networks, job security, and the guarantee of shelter are all liable to have changed in nature or be completely nonexistent after the duration of a prison sentence (Jones, 2021). They can no longer rely on things they had become accustomed to in prison. The structure of prison life can …

How We See Ourselves: Self-Esteem, Perceived Physical Attractiveness And Perceptions Of Being Overweight, Yasmin Odeh Apr 2022

How We See Ourselves: Self-Esteem, Perceived Physical Attractiveness And Perceptions Of Being Overweight, Yasmin Odeh

University Research Symposium Posters and Abstracts

We are a nation that emphasizes healthy self-esteem, and research indicates that there are many benefits of having a high self-esteem, including confidence, good physical and mental health, and better relationships (Seok & Park, 2021). Not everyone, however, has high self-esteem. There are many factors that contribute to having a high self-esteem, including early family experiences, acceptance from peers, and accomplishments (Cast & Burke, 2002; Schwalbe & Staples, 1991). While some of these factors contributing to self-esteem may be under people’s control, other factors that affect self-esteem are not. Research has shown that one’s physical attractiveness (which can be argued …

Online Sex Work In The Time Of Covid-19, Courtney Ebersole Apr 2022

Online Sex Work In The Time Of Covid-19, Courtney Ebersole

University Research Symposium Posters and Abstracts

Young college-age women have been increasingly using online sex work as a popular avenue to raise capital. This study explores the experiences of women (both cis and trans) undergraduate students who engage in self-produced sex work using the mainstream online adult entertainment platform, Onlyfans. Posting explicit content such as pictures and videos on the Onlyfans platform has allowed many college women to earn an income and fund their university costs, especially during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. This study aims to identify interpretative narratives used by undergraduate women in the U.S. to make sense of their labor as sex workers within …
