Janssen, clerk, of the Classis of Wisconsin, reported to the General Synod of the Reformed Protestant Dutch Church that the Reformed churches in the state have "banded together to form a Classis."The classis now seeks recognition from the synod. Rev. Martin A. Ypma and Elder G. Brand were elected as delegates to the meeting of the General Synod.

Post has done many good things for our Settlement and has always been of great assistance to our non-English speaking Dutch when they had to deal with court cases and other issues."

It was reported in De Hollander on this date that although the Whig party campaigned "tirelessly," the Democratic majority was maintained by 46 because the pastors, elders, and deacons of the First Reformed Church aided the party. But the Republicans had the majority in Zeeland although the editor did not have the precise numbers.

A copy of a letter of A.C.V.R. to Gilman Chase regarding property matters. The letter is difficult to read even though A.C.V.R. wrote in English. Apparently he hastily made a copy of the original letter. Therefore, his handwriting is not in the usual clear style of most of his writings. The letter needs to be "deciphered" in order to be useful for research.

David Demarest, pastor of the Second Reformed Church, New Brunswick, New Jersey, in which he profusely thanks the women of the Second Reformed Church for the two boxes of clothing which they sent. The Consistory of the First Reformed Church met on this date. Rev. Albertus C. Van Raalte, elders H. Broek, Wilterdink, Hekhuis, Broersma, Labots, and deacons de Weerd, Wilterdink, van den Berg, and Keppel were present. The entire meeting was taken up with a discussion about the weekly newspaper, De Hollander, which involved V.R. who was to have control of the contents. The Doesburgs who put out the paper had questions about this.

A call from the Graafschap Consistory was made to the Rev. Helkius de Cock who lived in the Netherlands. The writer of the document said that Rev. Albertus C. Van Raalte did not sign the call for some unknown reason. Elders who signed were H. Strabbing, H. Schrotenboer, J. Rutgers, and Steven Lukas; and deacons, J. F. van Anrooy and M. Naeijghe document also included responses to the seven questions which de Cock had asked about Graafschap, its environs, the state of the parsonage, etc

A draft of a letter by A.C.V.R. to a Mr. Silsbee who is the executor of the estate of Mr. Nathaniel Silsbee. Some parts of the letter were scratched out and rewritten. A.C.V.R. is concerned about paying off the debt he owed Silsbee for land purchased in 1848. Hyma makes reference to this letter on pp. 164-65. A.C.V.R. concludes by saying "excuse my broken English."

V.R. had hoped he would have come to Holland to get the papers V.R. is now sending but he had not come. In the course of the letter, V.R. refers to advice his father gave him: Boy, do well and never look back. The business arrangements with denb. appear to be unraveling. V.R. still hopes that the denbleykers will come to the Colony but V.R. is quite direct in some of his comments about denb.'s business ideas.

A document in A.C.V.R.'s handwriting [7], entitled, "Census of the Colony January 18, 1849, Taken in connection with the circulation of the harbor petition. On that date, there were 464 houses, 1744 acres cleared, 2 churches, 2 mills, and 2,185 "souls." He added, "Persons at Grand & Kalamazoo rivers and other places at work who belong here would prombably swell the population to 2500. Add Indian lands cleared and there would be not less than 2000 acres." Holland village and neighborhood contained 131 houses.

A report on "The Hollanders and the Colony," which appeared in the Grand River Eagle, p. 2., mainly from a Mr. J. Walker, an American school teacher in Zeeland. This gentleman's students are mainly adults learning the English language. There is also a school using the Dutch language. The village of Zeeland contains "50 to 100 houses". The area is "fast becoming a garden of the choicest kind." The colonists are a "reading and writing people."
