The congregational meeting on this Thanksgiving Day opened with the singing of Psalm 86, verse 6 after which the pastor, Rev. Albertus C. Van Raalte, prayed and then "presented the needs of the congregation..." A report was made on the income given for the poor, the Academy, congregational school, and other causes. The congregational school was $1,128.12 in debt. There were still twenty-one unpaid bills on the church building. Many members owed money on their pews. The General Synod minutes of that year indicate the congregation had 168 families and 334 members. Forty infants were baptized, there were 150 catechumens, …

A meeting of the Board of Regents of the Holland Academy was held on this date. Those in attendance were Rev. John Van Vleck, Rev. Giles Vande Wall, Rev. Albertus C. Van Raalte, Rev. Cornelius Vander Meulen, Rev. Adrian Zwemer, Rev. G. J. Nykerk, and Rev. Pieter J. Oggel. Vande Wall was elected president and Van Raalte, treasurer. The by-laws were set forth. It was resolved that the minutes would be kept in English. The all-day and evening sessions dealt with many issues.

Roost has been sent by the Holland Harbor Board to canvass the eastern RCA churches and friends to raise money for the harbor project.

The Board of Foreign Missions (later, World Missions) was organized by the General Synod in 1832. The board was under the direction of the RCA but was also under the authority of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. David Abeel led the first mission of the RCA to the island of Borneo in the Dutch East Indies in 1836. Missions also sprouted in four primary target areas: Japan, India, China, and Arabia. The "Traveling & Begging Guide" of Rev. Albertus C. Van Raalte when he went on fund-raising trips to New York and New Jersey to raise money for the academy building, later known as Van Vleck Hall. He is given clear directions as to where he must travel and whom he should visit. The writer of instructions in the guide is not identified. However, judging from a 1 September 1856 letter of John Van Vleck to Van Raalte, the handwriting of Van Vleck is similar to the handwriting in this document. Piljzer, have been barred from the Lord's table because of their bitter spirit. They have requested transfer of membership to the Scottish church. Geisje Vander Haar Visscher's diary contains an entry on page 13, in which she made a reference to both Albertus C. Van Raalte and to Mrs. Christina Van Raalte. An entry for 1849 on p. 10 said that the Van Raaltes often came to visit the Vander Haars. The 1856 reference is about the "High School" and bringing it into a better condition. He indicates that several students do not have good study habits. His funds are very low and he has debts of $50. Other students from the Colony at Rutgers are Jacob Vander Meulen, son of the Rev. Cornelius Vander Meulen, and Christiaan Vander Veen.
