The Impact Of Tobacco Use On Covid-19 Outcomes: A Systematic Review, Jessica Baker, Nandita Krishnan, Lorien C. Abroms, Carla J. Berg
GW Authored Works
Introduction. Tobacco use increases risks for numerous diseases, including respiratory illnesses. We examined the literature to determine whether a history of tobacco use increases risks for adverse outcomes among COVID-19 patients. Methods. We conducted a systematic search of PubMed, LitCovid, Scopus, and Europe PMC (for preprints) using COVID-19 and tobacco-related terms. We included studies of human subjects with lab-confirmed COVID-19 infections that examined tobacco use history as an exposure and used multivariable analyses. The data was collected between March 31st, 2020, and February 20th, 2021. Outcomes included mortality, hospitalization, ICU admission, mechanical ventilation, and illness severity. Results. Among the 39 …

OBJECTIVE: Despite evidence of acute and long-term consequences of suboptimal experiences of care, standardized measurements across countries remain limited, particularly for postabortion care. We aimed to determine the proportion of women reporting negative experiences of care for abortion complications, identify risk factors, and assess the potential association with complication severity.
METHODS: Data were sourced from the WHO Multi-Country Survey on Abortion for women who received facility-based care for abortion complications in 11 African countries. We measured women's experiences of care with eight questions from an audio computer-assisted self-interview related to respect, communication, and support. Multivariable generalized estimating equations were used …

Medical Institutional Repositories in Libraries (MIRL)
When the University of Louisville Libraries launched the ThinkIR institutional repository on the bepress Digital Commons platform in 2015, we anticipated offering open access journal publishing several years in the future. However, the Division of Infectious Diseases’ eagerness to find a venue to facilitate the equitable movement of research and information into the larger global community resulted in a partnership beginning in 2016 to publish two open access journals on the platform, which then served as a model for other health sciences journals, including one from the Emergency Medicine Department. The benefits, including the opportunity to provide free open access …

Shifts In Unaids Ethics Guidance And Implications For Ethics Review Of Preventive Hiv Vaccine Trials., Catherine Slack, Paul Ndebele, Mary Allen, Jessica Salzwedel
Global Health Faculty Publications
INTRODUCTION: A major change in the ethics framework for preventive HIV vaccine trials worldwide is the release of the UNAIDS 2021 ethical considerations in HIV prevention trials. This new guidance comes at an exciting time when there are multiple HIV vaccine efficacy trials in the field. Research Ethics Committees (RECs) or Institutional Review Boards are a most likely audience for these guidelines. Our objective is to highlight shifts in ethics recommendations from the earlier 2012 UNAIDS guidance.
DISCUSSION: We review recommendations related to four key issues, namely standard of prevention, post-trial access to safe and effective vaccines, enrolment of adolescents …

Background: Characterization of allergic responses to cockroach (CR), a common aeroallergen associated with asthma, has focused mainly on IgE reactivity, but little is known about T cell responses, particularly in children. We conducted a functional evaluation of CR allergen-specific T cell reactivity in a cohort of CR allergic children with asthma.
Methods: Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were obtained from 71 children, with mild-to-moderate asthma who were enrolled in a CR immunotherapy (IT) clinical trial, prior to treatment initiation. PBMC were stimulated with peptide pools derived from 11 CR allergens, and CD4+ T cell responses assessed by intracellular cytokine staining. …
Addressing Occupational Therapy Practitioners’ Knowledge And Attitudes About Older Adult Sexual Health And Sexual Activity Through Continuing Education, Robin Lynn Chilton
Addressing Occupational Therapy Practitioners’ Knowledge And Attitudes About Older Adult Sexual Health And Sexual Activity Through Continuing Education, Robin Lynn Chilton
Doctor of Occupational Therapy Capstone Projects
Background: There is very little research examining how specific education about older adult sexual health and sexual activity may improve occupational therapy practitioners’ knowledge and attitudes towards geriatric sexuality. Research is also limited as to how knowledge about older adult sexual health and sexual activity is applied in clinical practice. Therefore, it is important to investigate to what extent education in older adult sexual matters impacts occupational therapy practitioners’ knowledge, attitudes, and clinical practice.
Objective: To examine and explore occupational therapy practitioners’ knowledge, attitudes, and clinical practice in the areas of older adult sexual health and sexual activity. Study Design: …

A Program Development And Evaluation Project For Provider Use Of Buprenorphine Maintenance, Kyle Olson, Aprn
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Background: Buprenorphine (BNX) is used in Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) deterrence. Optimal long-term duration with BNX is unclear, but evidence shows that there is a high risk for relapse when medicine is discontinued even if maintenance has been stable for some time.
Outcomes: The purpose of this project was to decrease barriers for providers implementing BNX therapy for individuals diagnosed with OUD. Outcomes measured included: (1) knowledge of and barriers to implementing current guidelines, (2) factors preventing use of guidelines, (3) recommendations for BNX maintenance as per guidelines.
Methods: Using a pre-post intervention design, participant knowledge on BNX guidelines, factors …

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Background: The nation’s HIV infection rate is alarming, yet only a small percentage of eligible individuals are prescribed pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). This sluggish PrEP uptake may be related to lack of knowledge among non-HIV specialist providers. Thus, interventions toexpand providers’ use of PrEP as an HIV prevention strategy are needed.
Objectives: The project aim was to develop an intervention to improve retail nurse practitioners’ (NP) knowledge for PrEP clinical practice, comfort screening for “at-risk HIV” patients, confidence prescribing PrEP, and likeliness to prescribe PrEP in the next six months.
Methodology: An online PrEP tutorial was implemented for retail clinic NPs. …

This report from the study, Strengthening Missouri’s Capacity to Respond to Public Health Crises, summarizes key findings that are relevant to strengthening the state’s and local public health agencies’ (LPHAs) capacity to respond to future public health crises. With funding from Missouri Foundation for Health, a George Washington University study team conducted 138 stakeholder interviews within public health and other sectors involved in the COVID-19 response, revealing several key opportunities for the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS). Missouri, like many other states, faced great challenges in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. Missouri now has a singular opportunity …
