Rates of bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the United States are high and, largely, still soaring. Though chlamydia cases have decreased slightly since 2017, gonorrhea and syphilis have increased by 25% and 68%, respectively, and congenital syphilis has increased by 184%. Bacterial STI can lead to pain, infertility, and even, in the case of syphilis and congenital syphilis, death. With appropriate detection and treatment, all of these STIs are curable. And yet a range of barriers between communities and the healthcare system perpetuate the STI epidemic.
Community health workers (CHWs) could play a key role in helping bridge the …

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that about 290,000 to 650,000 people worldwide are affected annually by the flu (WHO, 2023). Children ages 0–17 are more prone to contracting the flu due to increased contact with other individuals in daycare and grade school as they are more likely to put their hands in their mouths and less likely to practice proper hygiene. Additionally, they have less developed immune systems to fight off infections (CDC, 2020). This leads to an increased likelihood of catching an illness that can spread from person to person compared to adults. According to the Morbidity and …

Characterization And Assessment Of Barriers And Facilitators To The Decision-Making Process For Blood And Blood Donor Safety In The United States: A Collective Case Study, Lauren A. Crowder
Doctor of Philosophy in Translational Health Sciences Dissertations
Background: Over 16 million blood components are transfused to patients in need every year in the United States (Jones et al., 2021). Because of the reliance on human blood donors, the donation and transfusion of blood will always be associated with some level of risk for both donors and recipients; the tolerability of these risks may vary from stakeholder to stakeholder. While the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) concedes that attaining a blood supply with zero risk for transmission of infectious diseases may be unattainable (U.S. Food and Drug Administration, 2019), they continue to strive for the lowest …

Antibiotic Stewardship For Asymptomatic Bacteriuria In Older Adults Residing In Long-Term Care At End-Of-Life, Kimberly Madison Agpcnp-Bc
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Background: Differentiating between asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB) and urinary tract infections (UTIs) in older adults is challenging due to their atypical presentation. There is a critical gap in practice to adhere to clinical guidelines advising against treating ASB with antibiotics.
Objectives: The purpose of this Quality Improvement project was to implement an antibiotic stewardship program at a hospice organization to standardize judicious use of antibiotics at the end-of-life. The outcome measures were designed to evaluate clinician knowledge, prescribing policies and practice changes, the completeness of documentation, the appropriate usage of antibiotics, and clinician antibiotic use attitudes and beliefs.
Methods: Hospice clinicians …

Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia Bundle Compliance: A Quality Improvement Project, Keesha L. Holmes Msn, Fnp, Ne-Bc
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Background: In many hospitals, patients requiring mechanical ventilation are managed in an intensive care unit (ICU) or a unit that requires a higher level of care compared to a medical-surgical unit. Patients on mechanical ventilation are susceptible to acquiring ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) if precautionary measures are not taken.
Aims/Objectives: The purpose of this quality improvement project was to assess if after an identified group of critical care registered nurses (RN) participated in an education session on ventilator-associated pneumonia and ventilator-care bundle (VCB) interventions, would their knowledge be enhanced, would the RNs implement the knowledge learned into their practice, and if …

BACKGROUND: Opisthorchiasis is caused by an infection with fish-borne liver flukes of the genus Opisthorchis. Opisthorchiasis frequently leads to chronic inflammation in the biliary tract and is classified as a group 1 biological carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer: a definitive risk for cholangiocarcinoma (CCA).
METHODS: We used the rapid immunochromatographic test (ICT) to detect anti-Opisthorchis viverrini IgG and IgG4 subclass antibodies in sera of patients with CCA. The ICT kits were developed based on soluble antigens excreted and secreted by O. viverrini adult worms.
RESULTS: ICT indicated sera was positive for IgG and IgG4 antibodies, respectively, …

Noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) defy the central dogma by representing a family of RNA molecules that are not translated into protein but can convey information encoded in their DNA. Elucidating the exact function of ncRNA has been a focus of discovery in the last decade and remains challenging. Nevertheless, the importance of understanding ncRNA is apparent since these molecules regulate gene expression at the transcriptional and post-transcriptional level exerting pleiotropic effects critical in development, oncogenesis, and immunity. NcRNAs have been referred to as "the dark matter of the nucleus", and unraveling their role in physiologic and pathologic processes will provide vast …

BACKGROUND: Communities of color have been disproportionately impacted by COVID-19. We explored barriers and facilitators to COVID-19 vaccine uptake among African American, Latinx, and African immigrant communities in Washington, DC.
METHODS: A total of 76 individuals participated in qualitative interviews and focus groups, and 208 individuals from communities of color participated in an online crowdsourcing contest.
RESULTS: Findings documented a lack of sufficient, accurate information about COVID-19 vaccines and questions about the science. African American and African immigrant participants spoke about the deeply rooted historical underpinnings to their community's vaccine hesitancy, citing the prior and ongoing mistreatment of people of …

Urogenital schistosomiasis remains a major public health concern worldwide. In response to egg deposition, the host bladder undergoes gross and molecular morphological changes relevant for disease manifestation. However, limited mechanistic studies to date imply that the molecular mechanisms underlying pathology are not well-defined. We leveraged a mouse model of urogenital schistosomiasis to perform for the first time, proteome profiling of the early molecular events that occur in the bladder after exposure to S. haematobium eggs, and to elucidate the protein pathways involved in urogenital schistosomiasis-induced pathology. Purified S. haematobium eggs or control vehicle were microinjected into the bladder walls of …
