Process Improvement To Reduce Route Of Medication Administration Errors In Patients With Enteral Feeding Tubes, Elizabeth Scott Jan 2020

Process Improvement To Reduce Route Of Medication Administration Errors In Patients With Enteral Feeding Tubes, Elizabeth Scott

Doctoral Projects

Advances in health information management in the form electronic health records, computerized provider order entry systems, and clinical decision support systems and tools have enhanced the productivity, effectiveness, and efficiency of healthcare. However, the cost of these positive effects does come at the expense of other factors. Along with the introduction of Clinical Provider Order Entry (CPOE) systems, organizations have experienced new possibilities for medication errors and risks to patient safety. Factors associated with these errors should be evaluated in detail in order to mitigate the causes of these types of errors and to plan strategies for prevention. Continued research …

Truffaut’S L’Enfant Sauvage (The Wild Child, 1970): Evoking Autism And The Nascent “Eugenic Atlantic”, Joy C. Schaefer

Ought: The Journal of Autistic Culture

This essay analyzes François Truffaut’s L’Enfant sauvage (The Wild Child, 1970) as an early representation of autism that metaphorizes the neurodiverse child as the colonial subject. The film takes place in 1798, only a decade after the French Revolution, and depicts the true events of the “wild boy of Aveyron,” a feral child found in the Southern French forest when he was twelve years old. Before the film’s production, Truffaut—who also plays the boy’s teacher, Dr. Jean-Marc Itard—collected articles and books on autism and viewed videos of autistic children to create his main character’s behavioral patterns. The film …

Were They Spat On? Understanding The Homecoming Experience Of Vietnam Veterans, Heather Vlieg Sep 2019

Were They Spat On? Understanding The Homecoming Experience Of Vietnam Veterans, Heather Vlieg

Grand Valley Journal of History

This project investigates the contentious question of how American Vietnam veterans were received by family, friends, and society in general upon their return home from the Vietnam War. The goal is to discover how accurately published literature has portrayed the veterans' individual experiences. This has been done by comparing a large number of Vietnam veteran oral history interviews gathered by, and archived with, the Grand Valley State University Veterans History Project to that which has been written on the subject. This comparison clearly reveals that although there is a fair amount of published material on this topic, the majority of …

Grandfathers And Fathers In Ukraine And Across Cultures, David W. Shwalb, Oleh Vasylenko

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

This article begins with a review of international research on how cultures and contexts influence the roles of grandfathers and fathers (for book-length reviews, see Shwalb & Hossain, 2018; Shwalb, Shwalb, & Lamb, 2013). Subsequently, this article describes the historical and contemporary background of Ukrainian society, provides a review of the extremely limited existing literature on families in Ukraine, and describes the results of exploratory open-ended interviews with 20 fathers and 20 grandfathers in Lviv City and three nearby villages in western Ukraine. The main finding of the interviews was a confirmation of several contextual influences on grandfathers and fathers, …

Scaling Programs With Research Evidence And Effectiveness (Spree), Nan Maxwell, Scott Richman

The Foundation Review

Foundations can serve more people by identifying and supporting effective interventions that are ready to be scaled. This article describes a process called SPREE — Scaling Programs with Research Evidence and Effectiveness — that can help funders and their grantees scale successfully. Implementing this process can assist foundations in using evaluation research as a tool to determine which interventions are likely to produce desired outcomes, and to identify which organizations are ready to scale them. The SPREE process is grounded in evaluation and implementation science frameworks and has been applied since 2016 by the Corporation for National and Community Service. …

Occupational Therapy In Prisons, Amber Carmean, Amanda Boman, Katie Kowalski, Joselyn Walsworth Jul 2019

Occupational Therapy In Prisons, Amber Carmean, Amanda Boman, Katie Kowalski, Joselyn Walsworth

Community Based

This study investigates the needs of incarcerated individuals upon reintegration into the community. In this article, we use thematic analysis to dissect two prison documentaries in order to best assess the needs of these individuals to inform occupational therapy intervention. Occupational therapy seeks to empower individuals while analyzing needs and how the individuals can be best supported. Our analysis shows that there are many needs that go unaddressed prior to community reintegration leading to a higher chance of recidivism recurring. Through better understanding the needs of individuals, occupational therapy can become better informed on how intervention can benefit this specific …

Advocacy-Related Occupations Among People With Disabilities: Assessing Program Outcomes Of An Advocacy Workshop, Audrey Tarbutton, Stefanie Austin, Rachel Bendewald, Hayley Monforte

Community Based

An emerging area of occupational therapy (OT) practice includes program development for persons with disabilities (PWD). These programs are designed to train PWD how to identify issues and advocate for inclusion and accessibility (Umeda et al., 2017). Among the available literature on community-based advocacy programs, results show positive social outcomes including increased self-advocacy knowledge and related behaviors (i.e. Kramer, 2015; Mishna et al., 2011). Regarding the present study, an advocacy training program titled “Community Organizing Advocacy Skills Training” (COAST) was developed using the Midwest Academy Training Manual for the Advocate. The purpose of this study was to pilot a tool …

Women & Adhd Functional Impairments: Beyond The Obvious, Noelle Marita Lynn Apr 2019

Women & Adhd Functional Impairments: Beyond The Obvious, Noelle Marita Lynn

Masters Theses

Women with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder are an understudied and underserved population. Research on women with ADHD has shown that they are significantly impaired by ADHD and its functional impairments. It also shows that women often internalize their symptoms and impairments. However, no research was found that explores what this internalization does to the women. The researcher chose to begin to address this gap in the literature through this qualitative phenomenological study. The purpose of this study is to explore the impact of functional impairments caused by ADHD on the internal lived experiences of women.

The researcher conducted fourteen interviews …

Adoptees Revisiting China, Kelly Hancox Apr 2019

Adoptees Revisiting China, Kelly Hancox

Honors Projects

Since 1991, more than 80,000 children from China have been adopted to the United States. This thesis describes the circumstances that led to those adoptions and focuses on 17 Chinese adult adoptees’ return trip reculturation experiences. In doing so, this study reveals the impact of these trips on the transracial adoptees’ identities. Return trips significantly impacted adoptees with factors such as age during return trip, length of trip, linguistic fluency, and prior cultural knowledge greatly affecting trip experiences. Because of the ages of this cohort of adoptees, return trips may become more popular in the coming years as they enter …

Improving Heart Failure Care Plan Coordination Across The Health Care Continuum, Amy Veltkamp Apr 2019

Improving Heart Failure Care Plan Coordination Across The Health Care Continuum, Amy Veltkamp

Doctoral Projects

Heart failure costs the United States 31 billion dollars each year, with much of those costs attributed to hospital admissions. Coordinating care across the health care continuum is a critical factor in improving heart failure care and reducing readmissions. An organizational assessment was conducted using the Burke and Litwin Causal Model of Organizational Performance and Change. The quality improvement project implemented a longitudinal plan of care (LPOC) across 10 hospitals and numerous ambulatory care sites at a large Midwestern health organization. Nurse care managers (NCMs) were the focus of this project due to their high-level of involvement in care coordination. …
