Defending The Humanities: Making A Case For Eighteenth-Century Studies, Katherine Gustafson, Heather King, Scott R. St. Louis, Linda Zionkowski
Peer Reviewed Articles
While the percentage of humanities majors has long been on the decline, the more recent experiences of the Great Recession, its aftermath, and the outbreak of Covid-19 have introduced a variety of daunting and intertwined challenges to scholars in these disciplines. Financial and occupational anxieties surrounding higher education threaten not only to crowd out humanities departments but also to alter the very understanding of what higher education is. While some students attend college to prepare themselves for engaged citizenship or to learn in a community, many also attend as a pathway to employment and expect a prompt return on investment. …
Evaluating Evangelisation In Faith-Based Organisations: A Study Of Catholic Educational Centres, Pedro Filipe Gomes
Evaluating Evangelisation In Faith-Based Organisations: A Study Of Catholic Educational Centres, Pedro Filipe Gomes
SPNHA Review
Whilst many studies have shown the positive impact which faith-based organisations have contributed to global development, a question arises over the effectiveness of these institutions at imparting to their beneficiaries what makes them unique – their faiths. This study seeks to review the literature and interview key members of Catholic faith-based organisations to better understand the role that evangelisation, which is defined as “bringing the Good News of Jesus into every human situation,” plays in their work. The study focuses in particular on Catholic educational organisations and seeks to understand if they have institutionalised measures of success for this component …

Chapter 15: Family Caregiving, Anna Hammersmith
Books and Contributions to Books
The United States’ aging population has led to a greater need for caregivers. This responsibility often falls to family members. Social workers can support family caregivers, but mindfulness about group and individual differences is crucial. Understanding diverse needs of family caregivers and recipients will help social workers effectively implement interventions.

Trauma-Informed Schools: A Strategy For Problem Behaviors In The Classroom, Timothy Hall
Masters Projects
Students that are making poor behavior choices in school generally are performing lower academically. The growing number of students that are coming to school that have experienced trauma is one reason why students are misbehaving in class. Schools have the opportunity to address this issue by implementing a trauma-informed school methodology. Trauma-informed schools work with students to be aware of the trauma that they have faced and teaches them ways to cope with the symptoms of trauma. This project discusses what trauma is and how it affects students and what schools can do to meet the needs of these students. …
Can Civil Society Be Inclusive? Strategies For Endowed Foundations, Irene M. H. Davids, Lucas C. P. M. Meijs
Can Civil Society Be Inclusive? Strategies For Endowed Foundations, Irene M. H. Davids, Lucas C. P. M. Meijs
The Foundation Review
Literature on inclusion and exclusion within civil society distinguishes two broad approaches: the managerial, based on the private sphere, and the democratic, based upon the public sphere. Regardless of the approach, however, the influence of cultural distance or proximity between endowed foundations and grassroots associations has remained understudied. This research aims to address this gap.
This article shares results of a quantitative comparison of the patterns of funding awarded by a regional endowed foundation in the Netherlands to immigrant grassroots associations and to other grassroots organizations. The results reveal differences in funding despite the foundation’s inclusive strategy. An exploration of …

Multinational Bibliography On Acculturation (1808-2020), With Url Links To Abstracts Or Full-Text, Joaquim Castro, Floyd W. Rudmin
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
Acculturation is an ancient topic of scholarship, with ever more interest and importance as migration increases on a global scale. The pace of scholarship has accelerated in the past few decades, with the result that earlier scholarship tends to be lost and recent scholarship is often unfound. The following bibliography is intended to help remedy these kinds of problems. This 2020 revision of Rudmin’s 2011 bibliography has almost 8,300 references, including much of the acculturation literature written in Portuguese, French, and Spanish.
How Diet Affects The Environment, Jessica Riley
How Diet Affects The Environment, Jessica Riley
Student Scholars Day Posters
While climate events result in large scale economic costs for communities, the social impacts are just as devastating. With the community event titled "How Diet Affects the Environment," the aim was to spread awareness about the negative environmental impacts of consuming animal products. From the literature and collaboration, attendees were encouraged to acknowledge how their eating habits affect the environment. Raising animals for food is responsible for 30% of the world's water consumption, occupies 45% of the earth's land, and is responsible for 91% of Amazon destruction. By exposing people to this information, there was a push to catalyze a …

Building Lasting Relationships Among Refugees And The Grand Rapids Police Department, Rachael Bonin, Ezra Odioko
Student Scholars Day Posters
Recent survey results indicated that while the Kentwood and Wyoming Police were welcoming and culturally competent to refugees, Grand Rapids police faired much worse. In addition, studies have shown that the refugees who are coming to Grand Rapids have an existing fear of police from their home country which they have carried with them into the United States. This project brings together the Grand Rapids Police Department with individuals from the refugee population. It will incorporate efforts to build trust among the two groups by bringing the Grand Rapids Police Department into the surrounding refugee communities, along with trusted community …

Participation In An Interprofessional Simulation Event: Impact On Student Learning, Holly Arguelles
Honors Projects
Interprofessional education (IPE) is growing tremendously within numerous health care programs and continues to impact both healthcare professionals and patients. The significance of having IPE simulation events is to provide students with the ability to gain knowledge, awareness, and understanding of other disciplines. Focus groups following an IPE simulation event will allow for a better understanding of how these events potentially impact student learning, future learning outcomes, and knowledge of other professions. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of participation in an IPE simulation event on students' perceptions. To examine this impact, a student focus group …

A Collaborative Approach To Incentivizing Healthy Food Choices Among Uncontrolled Diabetic Patients At A Local Federally Qualified Health Center To Improve Health Outcomes, Briauna J. Taylor
Doctoral Projects
Background: The rate of uncontrolled diabetes among patients at a local Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) is higher than the nation standard, a phenomenon believed to be caused by the effects of social determinants of health (SDOH). SDOH, specifically food insecurity, play a significant role in health outcomes of diabetic patients. Increasing access to healthy foods, thereby reducing food insecurity, has the potential to improve glycemic control and reduce diet related chronic disease.
Objectives: The project aims to determine if partnership with a membership based incentivized grocery store has the potential to positively impact health outcomes among vulnerable patients with …

Creating Opportunities For Personal Empowerment: A Project Evaluation, Ann L. Cudney
Doctoral Projects
Introduction: 66% of individuals in the United States who experienced a major depressive episode in the last year saw a general practitioner or family doctor and not a psychiatrist or psychotherapist (Center for Behavioral Health Statistics and Quality, 2018). Many primary care providers treat with medication, however, a combination of medication and psychotherapy is associated with better results (Anxiety and Depression Association of America, n.d.). A Midwestern faith-based healthcare organization implemented a pilot cognitive behavioral therapy program at a family medicine residency clinic to improve mental health care.
Objectives: The purpose of this project was to evaluate if the implementation …

Increasing Annual Retinal Exams Among Patients With Type 2 Diabetes, Afokoghene H. Odhu
Doctoral Projects
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2017) reports that approximately 30 million people in the United States (US) have diabetes. Approximately 8 million have diabetes retinopathy (DR) (CDC, 2018). DR is the leading cause of vision impairment in type 2 diabetes patients. Left untreated, DR can result in loss of vision and blindness (Hernández, Simó-Servat, Bogdanov, & Simó, 2017). The US spends approximately $500 million dollars annually in the treatment of diabetes-related blindness (CDC, n.d.). Early detection and management of DR through tight glycemic control, aggressive blood pressure and lipid management is essential to preventing complications of the …
