Developing An Evidence-Based Supportive Services Program For Cancer Survivors In A Private Oncology Practice, Joseph Ellul

Doctoral Projects

Improvements in cancer treatment have led to a rapidly increasing survivor population. In response, multiple side effects of cancer and cancer treatment as well as the various wellness needs of survivors have been recognized. Survivorship programs have been developed to care for survivors with residual effects of cancer and the side effects of treatment; however, additional support is needed. Development Of A Depression Screening Protocol For At Risk Patients Based On The Adverse Childhood Experience Questionnaire, Brittany J. Taylor

Doctoral Projects

Background: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with increased risk for adult depression. Utilization of the Patient Health Questionnaire Nine (PHQ-9), in combination with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition (DSMV) criteria, aids in the diagnosis of comorbid depression and assessment of severity.

Objectives: To standardize the process of screening new adult patients at a specialty care clinic for ACEs. Then, implement a depression screening protocol based on ACE criteria to identify adult patients with comorbid depression.

Methods: Demographic, ACE score, PHQ-9 score, and protocol implementation data collected and analyzed by the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) …

Identifying Gaps In Care In The Geriatric Trauma Patient With Rib Fractures, Kathy A. Crystal Mar 2019

Identifying Gaps In Care In The Geriatric Trauma Patient With Rib Fractures, Kathy A. Crystal

Doctoral Projects

Introduction: Rib fractures in the geriatric patient can be life altering. Across the country trauma centers are caring for an increased volume of geriatric patients aged 65 years and older (Ali-Osman et al., 2018). The geriatric patient with thoracic injury has the second highest mortality rate among the trauma population in the United States (Mentzer et al., 2017). The assessment of the patient is key to identify critical changes due to high risk of adverse events from rib fractures. Despite efforts to standardize the assessment and care provided to the patient with rib fractures, a lot of variation occurs. Research …

Reflective Practice For Learning From Experience: Navigating The Back Roads At Work, Jan Jaffe

The Foundation Review

What are the roadblocks that limit reflective practice in the field of philanthropy? Between the desire to move the needle on social change and the pressure to be productive, philanthropy as a field is understandably driven to focus on doing and resistant to taking time to reflect on practice. This article is designed to help foundations encourage leadership and staff to put their expertise into play as a learning strategy.

This article defines reflective practice and traces roots and research that can inform its use. It also reports on interviews with philanthropy practitioners about how they use various reflective practice …

Guns On College Campuses: A Clash Of Perspectives, Jennifer Torreano, H. Bart Merkle

Other Scholarly Publications

Campus safety is an ongoing concern at colleges and universities nationwide. The escalation of gun violence in society has prompted many politicians to propose concealed carry legislation that would permit guns on campuses. The academy is grappling with this contentious issue as constituents both on and off campus advocate either for gun bans or for concealed carry policies in the name of campus safety. This paper explores the second amendment context of this issue, reviews the pros and cons of permitting guns on campus, and discusses several violence prevention strategies that higher education institutions can utilize.

Evaluation Of Short Term Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Intervention In A Primary Care Setting, Kevin Hengeveld

Doctoral Projects

Introduction: Depression and anxiety are chronic recurring medical conditions that impact all aspects of health. When depression and anxiety are present with other comorbid diseases, mortality and health care costs are higher. Children and young adults are particularly vulnerable to mental health issues. Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for this demographic. Depression is common in adolescents with an incidence of 8 to 20 percent. Primary care provides 70 percent of mental health care in the United States, and the primary intervention offered is pharmacological. Evidence suggests that a combination of medication and psychotherapy provide superior relief of …

Community Navigation As A Field Of Practice: Reframing Service Delivery To Meet The Needs Of Communities’ Marginalized Populations, Joby Schaffer, M. Julie Patiño, P. Barclay Jones, Ladawn Sullivan Dec 2018

Community Navigation As A Field Of Practice: Reframing Service Delivery To Meet The Needs Of Communities’ Marginalized Populations, Joby Schaffer, M. Julie Patiño, P. Barclay Jones, Ladawn Sullivan

The Foundation Review

Community navigators help individuals and families access local services and assistance through a combination of referrals and interpersonal support. The Denver Foundation launched the Basic Human Needs Navigator Learning Community in February 2014 to help navigators working with local organizations and community members practicing navigation independently improve their practice and identify similarities and differences in their approaches.

This article discusses the multiyear, peer-learning project, including the general lessons the foundation learned about both navigation and the use of a learning-community approach to reach its field-building goals.

Reports from participating organizations and community members over four years suggest the efficacy of …

University Libraries Equity & Inclusion Committee White Paper, Janelle Yahne, Samantha Minnis, Annie Bélanger, Jacklyn Rander, Matthew Reidsma, Gayle Schaub, Jennifer Torreano

Library Reports and Communication

By Fall 2017, ULEIC, and the task force before it, had been successful in bringing training opportunities to the attention of Libraries faculty and staff. However, the committee was struggling with defining its scope in relation to the work of Faculty Development and Support Committee (FDSC) and Department Heads. Collaborating with the Dean, it was decided to move forward with a co-creation facilitation, which would engage all members of ULEIC, to define:

  • The vision/purpose for the committee
  • It's relationships and partnerships with other library and campus groups
  • The desired outcomes
  • A new charge
  • A workplan

This report summarizes the findings …

Leadership: Self-Awareness Of Leadership Styles In Occupational Therapy, Katrina Greathouse, Joseph Gritter, Alexandra Imhoff

Successful organizations and professions depend on quality leadership. However, the literature on leadership in the field of occupational therapy, particularly understanding the effects of self-awareness, is limited. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews, four weeks after the completion of two self-awareness assessments. There were a total of four participants. All participants were occupational therapists and currently held a formal leadership title in the Midwest United States. The data was transcribed verbatim …

The purpose of the study was to test the effectiveness of an interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) education program on clinicians' and students' knowledge and attitudes toward IPCP and to determine the effectiveness of an IPCP weight loss program in two nurse-managed centers. The study team used the Midwest Interprofessional Practice, Education, and Research Center (MIPERC) collaborative practice education program that consists of online learning modules followed by daily huddles and collaborative care planning. The obesity intervention program was implemented by faculty and staff practitioners and students in two clinics with very different patient populations (community residents and college students). Staff/faculty …
