The Other In Henry Roth's Call It Sleep, Pauline Bleuse Jan 2013

The Other In Henry Roth's Call It Sleep, Pauline Bleuse

Masters Theses

This thesis project focuses on the notion of the Other in Henry Roth's 1934 novel Call It Sleep. The novel follows David as his family moves to New York and struggles in poor areas. David's inner world is rendered through a style which is reminiscent of a modernist stream of consciousness while retaining the realism of the 1930s proletarian novel. Call It Sleep is a rich text for the study of immigration and multi-culturalism and approaching the novel through the theme of the Other allows for multiple interpretations. The first chapter uses Jacques Lacan's theories on Desire and analyzes …

Geographical, Linguistic, Social, And Experiential Demarcation: The River In Edwidge Danticat’S The Farming Of Bones, April Dawn Best

Masters Theses

This thesis is a reading of the Massacre River in Edwidge Danticat’s The Farming of Bones that takes into account the river’s role as a physical border as well as various social, linguistic, and experiential borders that are at work in the novel. The Massacre River physically divides Haiti from the Dominican Republic; it both unites and separates the two nations. This thesis examines the language and structure of the novel to make sense of the paradoxical opposing representation of the river and examines the various borders Amabelle Désir experiences and her search for belonging upon being exiled from places …

Parents’ Attitudes Toward Their Children’S Heritage Language Maintenance: The Case Of Korean Immigrant Parents In West Michigan, Duckyoung Jung Becker Jan 2013

Parents’ Attitudes Toward Their Children’S Heritage Language Maintenance: The Case Of Korean Immigrant Parents In West Michigan, Duckyoung Jung Becker

Masters Theses

Research shows that many immigrant parents in the United States struggle with heritage language maintenance as their children start school in the dominant society. Many studies also reveal that immigrant parents value heritage language maintenance highly and wish their children to maintain home language. Although heritage language research has increased in the recent years, there is still a dearth of research among immigrants who reside outside of large metropolitan cities in the United States. By taking the case study approach, the present study identifies Korean immigrant parents who reside in West Michigan towns and, through interview and observations, explores their …

Moving From Partnership To Collective Accountability And Sustainable Change: Applying A Systems-Change Model To Foundations’ Evolving Roles, Karen W. Linkins, Lynda E. Frost, Becky Hayes Boober, Jennifer J. Brya Jan 2013

Moving From Partnership To Collective Accountability And Sustainable Change: Applying A Systems-Change Model To Foundations’ Evolving Roles, Karen W. Linkins, Lynda E. Frost, Becky Hayes Boober, Jennifer J. Brya

The Foundation Review

· In a time of scarce resources and significant needs, funders may seek to maximize the impact of their grantmaking through collaboration. While many foundations move well from identifying a problem to building broader awareness and forging key partnerships, they typically flounder in trying to move beyond collaboration to a sense of mutual responsibility or collective accountability for the greater good, which is a precondition for sustainable systems change.

· This article discusses three complex initiatives that made sustainable changes in integrated behavioral health and primary care. Using a conceptual framework based on the Building Blocks of Systems Change model, …

An Overview Of The Schwartz Theory Of Basic Values, Shalom H. Schwartz Dec 2012

An Overview Of The Schwartz Theory Of Basic Values, Shalom H. Schwartz

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

This article presents an overview of the Schwartz theory of basic human values. It discusses the nature of values and spells out the features that are common to all values and what distinguishes one value from another. The theory identifies ten basic personal values that are recognized across cultures and explains where they come from. At the heart of the theory is the idea that values form a circular structure that reflects the motivations each value expresses. This circular structure, that captures the conflicts and compatibility among the ten values is apparently culturally universal. The article elucidates the psychological principles …

Terms For Talking About Information And Communication, Corey Anton Aug 2012

Terms For Talking About Information And Communication, Corey Anton

Peer Reviewed Articles

This paper offers terms for talking about information and how it relates to both matter-energy and communication, by: (1) Identifying three different levels of signs: Index, based in contiguity, icon, based in similarity, and symbol, based in convention; (2) examining three kinds of coding: Analogic differences, which deal with positive quantities having contiguous and continuous values, and digital distinctions, which include “either/or functions”, discrete values, and capacities for negation, decontextualization, and abstract concept-transfer, and finally, iconic coding, which incorporates both analogic differences and digital distinctions; and (3) differentiating between “information theoretic” orientations (which deal …

Meeting English Language Learners’ Academic Needs Through Teacher Training: A Multicultural Approach, Marjorie Ninoska Gomez Talavera Aug 2012

Meeting English Language Learners’ Academic Needs Through Teacher Training: A Multicultural Approach, Marjorie Ninoska Gomez Talavera

Masters Theses

Research has revealed that educators are often ill-prepared to teach culturally and linguistically diverse learners. Research suggests that in order to meet the challenges of working with diverse learners, development of multicultural education must include the promotion of sensitivity towards different aspects of diversity. This study explores K-8 teachers´ knowledge and understanding of their students´ learning needs, specific to language and culture, and teachers´ perception of preparedness to effectively deliver instruction to learners of diverse linguistic and cultural background. In this study, the researcher has hypothesized that teachers are ill-prepared to teach linguistically and culturally diverse learners. The study consists …

Bias And Equivalence In Cross-Cultural Research, Jia He, Fons Van De Vijver Jun 2012

Bias And Equivalence In Cross-Cultural Research, Jia He, Fons Van De Vijver

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

Bias and equivalence are key concepts in the methodology of cross-cultural studies. Bias is a generic term for any challenge of the comparability of cross-cultural data; bias leads to invalid conclusions. The demonstration of equivalence (lack of bias) is a prerequisite for any cross-cultural comparison. we first describe considerations that are relevant when choosing instruments in a cross-cultural study, notably the question of whether an existing or new instrument is to be preferred. We then describe the definition, manifestation, and sources of three types of bias (construct, method, and item bias), and three levels of equivalence (construct, measurement unit, and full …

Introductory Psychology Texts And The Inclusion Of Culture, Walter J. Lonner, Elke Murdock May 2012

Introductory Psychology Texts And The Inclusion Of Culture, Walter J. Lonner, Elke Murdock

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

This subunit and its future extensions are intended for use in courses of study that focus, either partially or completely, on psychology and culture. The content of these contributions are expected to be helpful to both teachers and students because they address the nature and scope of the inclusion of culture in basic psychology instruction – especially as it pertains to the coverage of culture in the ubiquitous (at least in the Western world) introductory psychology texts (IPTs). In this paper we present data that document the extent to which authors of IPTs have dealt with culture over a 20-year …

Understanding Human Abilities In Sub-Saharan African Settings, Elias Mpofu, Kayi Ntinda, Thomas Oakland

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

Cultural communities define and promote human abilities they perceive to give expression to their core values. Indigenous sub-Saharan African communities place a high premium mainly on abilities that promote or give expression to the value of social interests. This article considers human abilities from a cultural psychology perspective, one that reflects the understandings of culturally competent informants of valid and valued abilities in their context together with ways of knowing about such abilities. This article describes the utilization of an appreciative inquiry approach to understand human abilities among sub-Saharan African communities, including increasingly important abilities associated with schooling or modernization …

An Exploratory Study Of Perceptions Of Benefits And Barriers To Study Abroad For Students With Disabilities, Melissa Jean Kutsche Apr 2012

An Exploratory Study Of Perceptions Of Benefits And Barriers To Study Abroad For Students With Disabilities, Melissa Jean Kutsche

Masters Theses

Although roughly 11% of college students identify as students with disabilities, in 2009 only 3.6% of students who studied abroad were students with disabilities. Due to the lack of research on the topic, little is known about the reasons for this underrepresentation. In this exploratory study, qualitative data analysis was used to analyze responses to an open-ended survey distributed to 749 students with disabilities at a Midwestern university. Responses from 28 students indicate that students with disabilities perceive various benefits and barriers to study abroad, and that demographic characteristics such as type of disability, age, and marital status are not …

A History Of Sarcasm: Effects Of Balanced Use Of Sarcasm In A Relationship, Joel Mounts Jan 2012

A History Of Sarcasm: Effects Of Balanced Use Of Sarcasm In A Relationship, Joel Mounts

Honors Projects

We often think of sarcasm as a way to be mean—and it usually is. For instance, sarcasm has been shown to be victimizing, offensive, and anger-provoking to its targets (Toplak & Katz 2000, Bowes & Katz 2011). However, the reported valence (or emotional value) of sarcasm improves dramatically when two members of a conversation share some common ground (knowledge, perceptions & experiences), becoming more appropriate ( Kreuz, Kassler, Coppenrath, & Allen 1999), understandable (Pexman & Zvaigzne 2004), and memorable (Gibbs 1986). To test the hypothesis that the balanced use of sarcasm can similarly improve its valence, we examined differences in …

Does The Importance Of Parent And Peer Relationships For Adolescents’ Life Satisfaction Vary Across Cultures?, Beate Schwarz, Boris Mayer, Gisela Trommsdorff, Asher Ben-Arieh, Mihaela Friedlmeier, Katarzyna Lubiewska, Ramesh Mishra, Karl Peltzer

Peer Reviewed Articles

This study investigated whether the associations between (a) the quality of the parent-child relationship and peer acceptance and (b) early adolescents’ life satisfaction differed depending on the importance of family values in the respective culture. As part of the Value of Children Study, data from a sub-sample of N = 1,034 adolescents (58% female, M age = 13.62 years, SD = 0.60 years) from 11 cultures was analyzed. Multilevel analyses revealed a positive relation between parental admiration and adolescents’ life satisfaction independent of cultural membership. Further, the higher the importance of family values in a culture, the weaker was the …

Transposing The Urban To The Mall: Routes, Relationships, And Resistance In Two Santiago, Chile, Shopping Centers, Joel Stillerman, Rodrigo Salcedo Jan 2012

Transposing The Urban To The Mall: Routes, Relationships, And Resistance In Two Santiago, Chile, Shopping Centers, Joel Stillerman, Rodrigo Salcedo

Peer Reviewed Articles

Scholars understand shopping malls as central commercial and social settings. Some argue that malls’ designs attract and seduce consumers, while others contend that mall authorities exclude vulnerable groups and prohibit free expression. Ethnographic studies, by contrast, document how consumers interpret and shape malls as social settings. Drawing on qualitative research in two Santiago, Chile, malls, we contend that Santiago’s patterns of socioeconomic segregation and ample public transport facilitate cross-class interactions in malls. These characteristics encourage visitors to transpose practices and meanings from other public settings to the mall, drawing on rules for public interaction. Residents adapt mall infrastructures for noncommercial …

The Frequency Of Generic And Nongeneric Praise In The Sports And Academic Settings, Edwin G. Ortiz Jan 2012

The Frequency Of Generic And Nongeneric Praise In The Sports And Academic Settings, Edwin G. Ortiz

McNair Scholars Journal

The link between praise and motivation is well-documented. Generic praise focuses on a child’s traits and abilities and implies that achievement is due to stable factors such as intelligence. Nongeneric praise focuses on the effort the child exerts to achieve a goal and implies that achievement is due to nonstable factors. Generic praise influences goals for achievement by conveying to the child that outperforming others is more important than self-improvement. A performance goal is associated with negative outcomes for children such as the development of helpless responses and attributions of ability to explain success, which lead to decreased motivation in …

From The African American Oral Tradition To Slam Poetry: Rhetoric And Stylistics, Shawnkeisha Stoudamire Jan 2012

From The African American Oral Tradition To Slam Poetry: Rhetoric And Stylistics, Shawnkeisha Stoudamire

McNair Scholars Journal

Slam poetry is one of the most recent cultural innovations of African Americans. As with many cultural innovations, the artistry of slam poetry is undervalued while its entertainment appeal is overvalued. Although slam poetry’s artistry lies in both verbal and non-verbal aspects of performance, this research project focuses mainly on selected verbal features of slam poetry. This research seeks to balance the artistic and entertainment appeal of contemporary slam poetry by demonstrating that its verbal features derive from a linguistic heritage in early forms of Black English vernacular oral storytelling and from new styles of performance poetry produced by African …
