The Effects Of Teaching Two Syllable Types And One Syllabication Rule On The Spelling Achievement Of Students With Learning Disabilities, Tracey Ellen Taylor
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine whether teaching two syllable types and one syllabication rule in a reading program would affect the spelling achievement of students with learning disabilities. Seven fifth-grade students with learning disabilities from western-lower Michigan participated in this study. The intervention involved teaching the closed syllable and silent-e syllable in conjunction with the VC/CV syllabication rule. During the closed syllable phase and the silent-e phase, the students were given a ten word spelling test on Monday of each week. To determine spelling achievement, the students were evaluated for both word accuracy and syllable accuracy. The …

An Extended Year Program For At-Risk Middle School Children, Karen Patrice Flanigan
An Extended Year Program For At-Risk Middle School Children, Karen Patrice Flanigan
Masters Theses
At the beginning of this century only 6% of the American population even received a high school diploma. Now that diploma is so necessary that our society can no longer support or afford any undereducated citizens. Every year there is less and less room for them in the work force.; The states and school districts are reacting to this by trying to identify these at-risk children and to pose interventions to keep them in school. This is one account of an extended year program that was implemented for at-risk middle school children. The research focuses on the characteristics of these …

A Gifted Child’S Education Requires Real Dialogue: The Use Of Interactive Writing For Collaborative Education, Dorothy Ciner Armstrong
Peer Reviewed Articles
This paper reports the findings of two studies which compared the responses to using dialogue journals by teachers of the gifted and talented and their students. The purpose of this research was to learn more about the ways that such interactive writing can enable GT students to collaborate effectively in their own education. Study 1 sought to determine the types of discourse functions teachers used in the journals they kept with their instructor in a graduate practicum and with the GT students they taught in that practicum. They interacted differently with their instructor than with their students in ways consistent …

School Sexism And Its Educational Implications, Michelle Ann Frantz
School Sexism And Its Educational Implications, Michelle Ann Frantz
Masters Theses
Despite American education's claim that it is an equalizing force, a body of research documents that females do not receive equitable experiences in school when compared to the same experiences of boys. This study investigates many of the forces that have contributed to the persistence of gender inequity.; This study then examines feminist theory, the history of female education, and current research on school sexism. Next, the results of surveys given to a group of secondary educators and another given to a random sampling of high school students do show that gender inequities still occur even though claims to the …

Choosing And Using Children's Literature: The Rationales And Instructional Designs Of Preservice Teachers, Nancy J. Gooden
Choosing And Using Children's Literature: The Rationales And Instructional Designs Of Preservice Teachers, Nancy J. Gooden
Masters Theses
This study examined the extent to which preservice teachers were aware of gender related issues in their selection and use of children's literature. The review of research provided background information on the subject of gender equity in children's literature and explored the effects of stereotyped attitudes on students' academic performance, self-esteem, and career choices. The application project used three instruments of study: a gender attitude survey, an analysis of preservice teachers' rationales for literature selection, and an examination of preservice teachers' instructional designs. The results of this study indicated that preservice teachers may benefit from additional exposure to gender issues …

Multicultural Literature: The Need For Inclusion, Barbara Gripton
Masters Theses
Since Muskegon Public Schools serves a multicultural population, and since the canon of the textbooks used in the secondary language arts classes reflects neither this diverse population nor the current publications of the diverse cultures of the society, this study, in the form of a survey will show the need for the district to include literature contributed by ethnic minority writers from the American literature scene. The study shows the increasing need for such inclusion as well as offering rationale for doing so.; Finally, this paper will propose a three year pilot class, minority literature, similar to the minority history …
