A Study On The Learning Styles Of Limited English Proficiency Students, Linda J. Clay
A Study On The Learning Styles Of Limited English Proficiency Students, Linda J. Clay
Masters Theses
Limited English Proficiency (LEP) students are not attaining academic success in public schools. Enrollment of Hspanic students is increasing, but at the same time assessment of their work shows little achievement. A crucial issue in the education of language minority students is how they learn. This thesis examines their learning style preferences through data gathered from student and teacher surveys and then correlates it to existing research. The conclusion drawn is that Hispanic LEP students are not being taught in their preferred learning styles and that the primary manner of verbal/linguistic instruction used in schools is a deterrent to successful …
Language And Power In The Esl Classroom, Bonnie Jo Bustrum
Language And Power In The Esl Classroom, Bonnie Jo Bustrum
Masters Theses
Because of limited English proficiency and sociocultural knowledge, adult ESL students may be disadvantaged in determining, evaluating, and responding to American cultural demonstrations of power and authority through speech choices and nonverbal cues. As a first step toward a pedagogy that addresses this sociolinguistic need, this ethnography investigates aspects of power and language in the teacher-student relationship in the home countries of twenty-two adult ESL students. Student responses are analyzed and compared, and a pedagogical framework is proposed which may foster ESL students’ linguistic and social development toward greater access to information and a more informed process of enculturation into …

Using Expert Systems For Simulation Modeling Of Patient Scheduling, Charles R. Standridge, Duane Steward
Using Expert Systems For Simulation Modeling Of Patient Scheduling, Charles R. Standridge, Duane Steward
Peer Reviewed Articles
Modeling the scheduling of patient appointments is an important issue in simulating a health care delivery facility. A simulation model must include the control logic of appointment scheduling software and the explicit and implicit decision rules used by the human scheduler in selecting an appointment time. Expert systems provide one way of modeling such control logic and decision rules. We describe a structure for an expert system that models patient appointment scheduling and the integration of such an expert system within a simulation model. An example expert system for a small animal veterinary clinic is presented.
The Effects Of Repeated Reading, Paired Reading, And Demonstration On Reading Fluency, Stephanie Anna Gerdes
The Effects Of Repeated Reading, Paired Reading, And Demonstration On Reading Fluency, Stephanie Anna Gerdes
Masters Theses
Reading curriculum generally contains instruction in two major areas, word identification and comprehension. Reading fluency, however, receives much less attention. It is too often seen more as a by-product of good instruction rather than as a central goal. This paper studies the impact of repeated reading, paired reading, and demonstration on the reading fluency of regular education students. Results suggest that integrating these strategies into the context of the regular education curriculum has a positive effect on students' reading fluency and comprehension. Practical suggestions for integrating these methods into the curriculum are given.
The Relationship Between Motivation And Reading Comprehension, Christopher L. Knoll
The Relationship Between Motivation And Reading Comprehension, Christopher L. Knoll
Masters Theses
This study is an exploration of the relationship between motivation and reading comprehension in tenth grade English/language arts students. The fifty-five voluntary participants were tenth grade students at West Ottawa High School in Holland, Michigan. They were given a short story to read and then a short test for motivation and a reading comprehension quiz were administered. Both assessment tools were then scored and the results analyzed, using the Pearson r to measure the significance of the coefficient. The resulting correlation (0.73) between motivation and reading comprehension indicates that there is indeed a strong relationship between the two variables. This …

Hiv Risk Factors In Migrant Farmworkers, Gina Rosenberg
Hiv Risk Factors In Migrant Farmworkers, Gina Rosenberg
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to examine the HIV/AIDS knowledge level and risk behaviors in Hispanic migrant farm workers in west and southwest Michigan. A secondary data analysis was performed to measure HIV/AIDS-related knowledge and risk behaviors. Overall knowledge level and risk behavior scores were developed for further data analysis. A Pearson R Correlation Coefficient was calculated and showed that the relationship between knowledge level and risk behaviors was not statistically significant.
Coefficients were also calculated for age, educational levels, and number of months spent in Michigan first with the knowledge level index, and then with the risk behavior …

Improving The Writing Skills Of At-Risk Students Through The Use Of Writing Across The Curriculum And Writing Process Instruction, Theresa A. Dean-Rumsey
Improving The Writing Skills Of At-Risk Students Through The Use Of Writing Across The Curriculum And Writing Process Instruction, Theresa A. Dean-Rumsey
Masters Theses
A plan for improving the writing skills of at-risk students was developed and implemented. Subjects were fifteen seventh-grade Title I students who demonstrated weak writing skills. Evidence for the existence of the problem included MEAP test scores and teacher observations. A review of research on writing pointed to the following solutions to the problem: increasing students’ experiences with writing by implementing writing across the curriculum, improving students’ knowledge and use of the writing process, and direct instruction in writing strategies and techniques. Results of the post-test did not indicate a significant improvement in writing had occurred as a result of …
The Effects Of Phonological Awareness Activities On At-Risk First Grade Readers, Kimberly L. Van Belois
The Effects Of Phonological Awareness Activities On At-Risk First Grade Readers, Kimberly L. Van Belois
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to look at a variety of phonological awareness studies and their impact on students with reading difficulties and to implement a program to develop student's reading abilities and look at its impact on student's knowledge of vowel and consonant recognition, vowel sounds, and sight words. Phonological awareness can be defined as one's sensitivity to, or explicit awareness of, the phonological structure of words in one's language. A number of researchers (eg., Libennan, Shankweiler, & Liberman, 1989) have concluded that adequate awareness of the phonological structure of words helps to make learning to read words …
Does A Phonological Intervention Program Using A Modified Auditory Discrimination In Depth Program Make A Difference In Kindergarten Students' Ability To Manipulate Phonemes?, Julie Kay Osbourne
Does A Phonological Intervention Program Using A Modified Auditory Discrimination In Depth Program Make A Difference In Kindergarten Students' Ability To Manipulate Phonemes?, Julie Kay Osbourne
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine if a training program based on the Lindamood Auditory Discrimination in Depth Program made a difference in students' abilities to manipulate phonemes and identify similarities and differences in initial consonants between words. Kindergarten students were pre- and post-tested using the Test of Phonological Awareness (TOPA) and the Test of Auditory Analysis Skills. While students showed substantial improvement in their abilities to manipulate phonemes, their improvement on initial consonant skills, as measured by the TAAS was not as substantial.

How Phonemic Awareness Training And Direct Phonics Instruction Effect The Decoding Ability Of Children With Reading Problems, Lynda Elaine Thatcher
How Phonemic Awareness Training And Direct Phonics Instruction Effect The Decoding Ability Of Children With Reading Problems, Lynda Elaine Thatcher
Masters Theses
The purpose of this thesis was to study how phonemic awareness and direct phonics instruction can effect the decoding abilities of children with reading problems. The importance of having phonics and phonemic awareness in the initial teaching of reading to young children was discussed. A review of the literature indicated that there is causative correlation between phonemic awareness and decoding skills. The research demonstrated that phonemic awareness intervention programs were very effective in increasing reading skills. Finally, the research implied that an effective reading program for young children with reading problems should include both phonological training and phonics instruction. In …
Components Of Perceived Interpersonal Interaction, Travis Sola
Components Of Perceived Interpersonal Interaction, Travis Sola
McNair Scholars Journal
This paper focuses on the perception of different psychological structures which, taken together, constitute social action from the observer's perspective. Thus, action identification is conceptualized as a function of structural components (frame domain) and semantic features (semantic domain). Certain combinations of semantic features are prescriptive schemata for typical behavior. The participants were primed for prescriptive or non-prescriptive schemata, then engaged in a memory task. The memory task consisted of an acquisition phase (participants heard partial action event sentences) and a recognition phase (participants were asked to identify sentences they had heard). A higher false recognition of "new" sentences containing the …

'About Talk': The Category Of Talk-Reflexive Words, Corey Anton
Peer Reviewed Articles
The present exploration examines the everyday capability to talk about talk by considering mainly the use of a particular word-type, what I shall be calling 'about talk' words. As an important note, the reader of this text should observe that almost all the sentences within this paper (except for quotations) embody 'about talk'. But, rather than continue to distract the reader by underlining every instance, I shall highlight (i.e., underline) only within the first two paragraphs of this essay all of these definite references to the verbal order. As for the other sentences, paragraphs, and pages, the reader is strongly …

Chaperon, Pamela A. Staszewski, Heather L. Vavrina
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect that a five-day horseback riding program had on the standing and/or sitting balance of children ages eight to eighteen afflicted with a variety of disabling diagnoses. The stated hypothesis is that after participating in a five-day session of therapeutic riding, subjects will show significant improvement in standing and/or sitting balance as measured by the Functional Reach Test (FRT) and the Modified Functional Reach Test (MFRT). The 15 subjects tested using FRT and the 17 subjects tested using the MFRT were all participants of the Cheff Center riding program. Subjects were …
