From Homer To The 21st Century: Charting The Emergence Of The Structure Of Interpersonal Meaning, John Adamopoulos

During the last quarter of the 20th century, cross-cultural research established that the meaning of interpersonal behavior can be described in terms of a universal structure that includes, among others, the notions of association (affiliation), superordination (dominance), and intimacy. While researchers generally agree on most of these universal dimensions, little is known about their origins –the whys and the wherefores of these structures. An approach designed to explain the emergence of the meaning of interpersonal behavior is the focus of this chapter. Current theory and research in culture and psychology produced multiple definitions and conceptualizations of culture. This paper reviews several approaches to understanding culture and introduces an integrative model of Culture as Unfolding Process (CUP) as a way of integrating insights from several perspectives. The model highlights mechanisms of cultural change and stability, and provides a versatile framework for understanding culture on multiple levels.

For service learning pedagogy to live up to its fullest and most authentic potential, educators must address the pitfalls of privilege that often go unexamined in relationships between groups of affluent university students and underprivileged populations that service learning programs traditionally seek to “serve.” In order to address dynamics of power and privilege inherent in any relationship between those who “give service” and those who are “served”, a relationship of honesty, reciprocity and mutuality must be established and promoted between those two groups. The wedding is one of the only rituals or events that many cultures of the world consistently have in common. Weddings are found in almost every society. A wedding can feed consumer appetites and the industry that supports it. Costs for the average United States wedding can range from $26,000 to $35,530 or more (“Cost of Weddings” 2006). The costs of Indian wedding ceremonies vary from $34,000 up to $2 million (Das 2005). Motivations And The Intent To Study Abroad Among Us, French And Chinese Students, Carol M. Sanchez, Marianela Fornerino, Mengxia Zhang

This paper analyzes the relationship between students’ motivations and their intention to participate in study abroad programs using a model based on expectancy theory. We surveyed US, Chinese and French business students who studied in their home countries. Results suggest that certain motivations are common among students from the three countries. We found that the direction of the relationship between motivations and the intent to study abroad varied among the three countries, that nationality moderates all of the relationships, and that different levels of the barriers moderate the relationship between motivations and the intention to study abroad.

This article examines methodological issues related to the measurement of implicit motives in culturally divergent samples. Implicit motives are seen as basic needs shared by all human beings. However, cross-cultural comparisons are very restricted because many cross-cultural studies on implicit motives with non- Western cultures developed and discussed culture-inherent stimuli. The aim of the study here was to search for a culture-independent set of picture stimuli measuring two basic motives (affiliation and power motive) in three different cultures.
