Handling Disruptions In A Network With Cross-Docking, Vishal Badyal, Fahim Ahmed, Nikhil Aditya Eti, Nathan Huynh, William Ferrell
16th IMHRC Proceedings (Dresden, Germany- 2023)
Cross-docking (CD) is a commonly used technique to consolidate freight for more efficient delivery to customers; CD is continuing to see increased use by companies. Synchronization of inbound and outbound freight is clearly critical to operations and so is having the cross-dock able to support the freight flow with available doors and material handling equipment. The latter is particularly important when there is a disruption in the inbound freight. One delayed truck can impact several outbound trucks. A methodology is proposed to address explicitly both the scheduling of trucks and material handling within the CD. Two models are proposed – …

Forklift Operator Safety & Productivity: A Review Of Current Research And Future Directions, Jesus Jimenez, Abhimanyu Sharotry, Francis A. Mendez Mediavilla
16th IMHRC Proceedings (Dresden, Germany- 2023)
This paper explores the challenges warehouse operations face in meeting customer demand and managing rapid growth, focusing on the role of forklift operators. Despite their versatility and importance in warehouse operations, forklifts are also a significant safety concern, with thousands of work-related injuries and fatalities recorded annually. The paper presents findings from a literature review on the factors related to forklift operator safety and efficiency, including energy consumption, training, the Internet of Things, ergonomics, and human factors such as worker fatigue. The study aims to develop a methodological framework to enhance the efficiency and safety of forklift operators by integrating …

Decision Rules For The Robotic Mobile Fulfillment System Of A Pcb Assembly Factory Warehouse, Ching-Jung Ting, Hendra Permana, Hsien-Mi Meng
16th IMHRC Proceedings (Dresden, Germany- 2023)
During the COVID-19 pandemic period, global supply chains are disrupted and most of the workers cannot go to the factories to work. Robotic mobile fulfillment system (RMFS) is one of the new types of autonomous, parts-to-picker system, designed especially for e-commerce warehouses. The system can increase the productivity of pickers. However, no research discussed the application of RMFS in manufacturing sector. This research simulates the picking process of a factory warehouse and studies the operational sub-problems which include order line assignment, station selection, pod selection, and pod storage assignment. Different decision rules of each operational problem are proposed and evaluated. …

Positive Effects Of Mindfulness Practices On Academic Performance And Well-Being, Katia G. Karadjova-Kozhuharova, Ruth L. Baker
University Libraries: Faculty Publications
This qualitative study explored potential positive effects of mindfulness practices among university students. The mindfulness practices were provided at an experiential space, the Brain Booth at the university library, meant to learn about the mind-body connection, reduce stress, and optimize learning. The Brain Booth activities were available to students at any time during the library working hours. The findings showed that the Brain Booth was experienced as helping students to 1) Relax and Destress; 2) Calm down; 3) Foster focus and clarity; 4) Actively engage and reenergize. A strong preference was outlined for mindfulness activities without a digital component or …

Use Of Advance Directives In Us Veterans And Non-Veterans: Findings From The Decedents Of The Health And Retirement Study 1992–2014, Ho-Jui Tung, Ming-Chin Yeh
Health Policy & Community Health: Faculty Publications
Evidence shows that older patients with advance directives such as a living will, or durable power of attorney for healthcare, are more likely to receive care consistent with their preferences at the end of life. Less is known about the use of advance directives between veteran and non-veteran older Americans. Using data from the decedents of a longitudinal survey, we explore whether there is a difference in having an established advance directive between the veteran and non-veteran decedents. Data were taken from the Harmonized End of Life data sets, a linked collection of variables derived from the Health and Retirement …
